  • How can we implement network search for Windows AND OS X clients?

    We have a network with Windows 7 and OS X (10.5 and 10.6) computers. Our servers run on Windows Server 2003 (1 Small Business Server, 2 Standard). We need to be able to search through about 15.000 - 30.000 documents in our archives. The best solution would be if users can search directly from the Windows menu (on Windows 7) or the Spotlight menu (on OS X 10.5 and 10.6). Also good would be if users can search directly from the search bar in their browsers, or by first visiting a site with the search form. In case the users search through the browser, it's important they they are able to open a file in the search results just by clicking on it. I have tested Microsoft Search Server Express, but it doesn't meet the requirements (no OS X support, results in the browser can't be opened by clicking in anything but Internet Explorer). I have looked at Spotlight server, but that only supports OS X. Thanks!

  • Conventions for search result scoring

    I assume this type of question is more on-topic here than on regular SO. I have been working on a search feature for my team's web application and have had a lot of success building a multithreaded, "divide and conquer" processing system to work through a large amount of fulltext. Our problem domain is pretty specific. Users of the app generate posts, and as a general rule, posts that are more recent are considered to be of greater relevance. Some of the data we are trying to extract from search is very specific (user's feelings about specific items or things) and we are using python nltk to do named-entity extraction to find interesting likely query terms. Essentially we look for descriptive adjective-noun pairs and generate a general picture of a user's expressed sentiment as a list of tokens. This search is intended as an internal tool for our team to draw out a local picture of sentiments like "soggy pizza." There's some machine learning in there too to do entity resolution on terms like "soggy" to all manner of adjectives expressing nastiness. My problem is I am at a loss for how to go about scoring these results. The text being searched is split up into tokens in a list, so my initial approach would be to normalize a float score between 0.0-1.0 generated off of how far into the list the terms appear and how often they are repeated (a later mention of the term being worth less, earlier more, greater frequency-greater score, etc.) A certain amount of weight could be given to the timestamp as well, though I am not certain how to calculate this. I am curious if anyone has had to solve a similar problem in a search relevance grading between appreciable metrics (frequency, term location/colocation, recency) and if there are and guidelines for how to weight each. I should mention as well that the final fallback procedure in the search is to pipe the query to Sphinx, which has its own scoring practices. Sphinx operates as the last resort in case our application specific processing can't find any eligible candidates.

  • Google search preview shows content not on the website

    My website google search entry is messed up. In the preview in google search results, I get things like cracks, serials, random ip addresses. I scanned all files and my computer for viruses and malware and could not find anything. I also tried to download and reupload all content from a friend's computer and still that content persists. I also scanned the source code of all files, but the content does not appear in any file. Google also does not detect any malware on the website, as seen in their webmaster tools. I have searched using the same keywords in other search engines such as bing and yahoo and the search results there are fine. I am quite clueless as to what the causes would be for this and what would be a possible remedy.

    I have a situation that I need help with. I backed up my Files on Windows XP using the System BackUp utility/wizard, and then Installed a new operating system on the machine. Now I want to restore my old files via the .bak file but it is not being recognized at all. Did I do this wrong or is there a way to still get back my old files on my new OS ? Thanks in advance!

We are trying to add a Standard 2008 R2 64 bit domain controller to the forest but for some reason during DCPROMO, we receive the following error: "to install a domain controller into this active directory forest,you must first prepare the forest using "adprep/forestprep" etc We went ahead an ran adprep /forestprep on our established domain controller and allowed time to replicate. When attempting to execute dcpromo again, we receive the same error. What gives?

  • Internet connection sharing between Windows XP and Windows 7

    I bought my lil sister's netbooks for Christmas and I've been having a heck of a time trying to get Internet Connection Sharing to work. The host computer is a Windows XP box and it uses a US Cellular 3G modem dongle thingy to set it's Internet access. Additionally I have a hard wire plugged into the LAN1 port of the router described below. (I tried the WAN port out of desperation but things didn't seem happy that way.) Additionally they have a linksys router (can't remember specific model number, I will find this out) that I was using to take advantage of it's wireless capabilities. Originally thought about updating the router to use dd-wrt, but after reading the instructions it looked like to much of a pita (had to downgrade firmware, then install dd-wrt) to set up, eventually I caved, out of desperation, and ended up successfully installing dd-wrt on the router. I have DHCP turned off on the router, actually all I could select was DHCP forwarder. The netbooks both have windows 7 starter installed on them. Initially, I had the networks joined to a homegroup but I dropped that and everyone is able to see everyone in their respective network explorers. When I turn on Internet Connection Sharing on the host, its IP on the LAN changed to 192.168.0.1, so I arbitrarily decided to assign the router to port 192.168.0.100. When I connect the netbooks they get IPs dynamically. As I stated before, everyone can see everyone in the network explorer, and shares can be accessed. The weird thing is that everyone can ping the router but they cannot ping each others IPs. The status on the netbooks says that there is no Internet Connectivity. Another thing I tried was manually setting the DNS servers on the netbooks to the DNS servers that the host computer has. The funny thing is when I ping an outside domain such as google.com the IP address resolves, however I get no responses from the pings. When I tried plugging the host into the WAN port I could ping the router, nor could I access the router's web access admin. Another thing I tried was turning off the firewall on the netbooks and the firewall off on the host computer for the LAN connection, and they still could not ping each other. Also I thought I should be able to start a remote desktop connection but I couldn't do that either, I also checked to make sure that computers would in fact accept a request for remote desktop connections.

    Hi all, I have a strange problem that I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere online. The issue has to do with using Windows RDP to connect to our servers. Here is what works: -XP/Vista client (any SPs) connecting to 32-bit Server 2003 machine -XP (SP2 and lower) client conecting to 64-bit Server 2003 machine Here is what does not work: - XP SP3+/Vista client connecting to 64-bit Server 2003 machine It appears that the issue is that XP SP3 and Vista clients cannot connect to x64 Server 2003 boxes. After entering the username/password, we get an error message saying the below, and the connection drops: To log on to this remote computer, you must have Terminal Server User Access persmissions on this computer. By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users group have these permissions. If you are not a member of the Remote Desktop Users group or another group that has these persmissions, or if the Remote Desktop User group does not have these permissions, you must be granted these permissions manually. The issue is that the user is a member of the Administrators group, which has permission. Also, logging in using the same username, but from an XP SP2 machine, has no problems at all.   • Local Network - Windows 7 and Vista can't see each other

    I've got a strange issue at home that has been bugging me for weeks, but I really need to get it sorted now so I'll detail as much as I can and hopefully someone can spot what might might be wrong. I have a wireless router connected to the internet and 3 devices connected to it. They are: Name OS Network IPv4 PC1 Windows 7 WORKGROUP 192.168.2.2 LAPTOP1 Vista WORKGROUP 192.168.2.3 PS3 192.168.2.4 and they all get their IP addresses dynamically. Both PC1 and LAPTOP1 can ping PS3 and get a response. PC1 and LAPTOP1 are unable to ping each other by ip address unless I ping by their name (which bizarrely shows that it is pinging via the IPv6 address). Also, to confirm this both PC1 and LAPTOP1 can ping each other via the long IPv6 address that they both have so they can obviously see each other just not via IPv4. I've disabled the firewalls on both machines as well to rule that out. I don't really know what IPv6 is used for and I've tried disabling it on both machines but all that happens then is that neither machine can see each other at all then. Does anyone have any idea of what may be stopping them seeing each other, any ways I can look at fixing this, or any network tools that may help identify where it is failing? Thanks, Mark

    In the query the top part is getting all the years that will run in the stored procedure.   • Why does copying an XML file from Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit to Windows XP 32-bit change the file?

    What I do: Copy an xml file (ctrl+C) on a Win Server 2008 machine. Minimize mstsc.exe (remote connection app). Paste the xml file on to my WinXP machine (ctrl+V). The result: All of the original contents are still present but another bit is appended at the end of it. E.g. the proper end of the file looks something like this: <ApplicationName>MyApp</ApplicationName> </ReceivePort> </ReceivePortCollection> <PartyCollection xsi:nil="true" /> </BindingInfo> But, after the copy, it looks like this: <ApplicationName>MyApp</ApplicationName> </ReceivePort> </ReceivePortCollection> <PartyCollection xsi:nil="true" /> </BindingInfo>al, PublicKeyToken=3zzf3xxxadyyy35" Type="1" TrackingOption="ServiceStartEnd MessageSendReceive PipelineEvents" Description="" /> <ReceivePipelineData xsi:nil="true" /> <SendPipeline xsi:nil="true" /> <SendPipelineData xsi:nil="true" /> <Enable>true</Enable> <ReceiveHandler Name="WCF_OracleDB_Rx" HostTrusted="false"> <TransportType Name="WCF OracleDB" Capabilities="779" Configuratio The extra bits it adds are things that come from earlier in the XML file.     I have over 8GB in my "Code Library" that I maintain on a 64GB ScanDisk Ultra Backup USB Device. Windows Search 4.0 (installed on Windows XP) can index removable drives, but Windows 7 (which uses Windows Search 4.0) cannot because the USB device identifies itself as a Removable drive and Windows 7 refuses to index removable drives. How can I mount the USB Thumb Drive as Fixed instead of Removable? All suggestions welcome and greatly appreciated.

  • Uninstall, Disable, or Remove Windows 7 Media Center

    Although Windows 7 Media Center has improved a lot over previous versions of Windows, but you might want to disable it for different reasons. Here we take a look at a couple of methods to get rid of it. There are a variety of reasons you might want to disable Windows 7 Media Center. Maybe you own a business and don’t want it to run on the machines. Or perhaps you don’t use it at all and just don’t want it around. Turn Off WMC Using Programs and Features Probably the easiest way to get rid of it on all versions of Windows 7 is to open Control Panel and select Programs and Features. This method is similar to disabling Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7. On the left hand panel click on Turn Windows Features on or off. Scroll down to Media Features and expand the folder. Then Uncheck Windows Media Center… You’ll get a verification message making sure you want to disable it, click Yes. Then the box next to Windows Media Center will be empty…click OK. Wait while WMC is disabled… To complete the process a reboot is required. After getting back from the restart, the WMC icon will be gone and there won’t be any way to launch it. Re-enable WMC If you want to re-enable it, just go back in and recheck it. Again you’ll need to wait while it’s configured, but when it’s done, a restart is not required.   Disable Media Center Using Group Policy Note: This process uses Group Policy Editor which is not available in Home versions of Windows 7. Click on the Start menu and type gpedit.msc into the Search box and hit Enter. Now navigate to User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Windows Media Center. Double-click on Do not allow Windows Media Center to run. Then select the radio button next to Enabled, click OK and close out of Group Policy Editor. Now if a user tries to launch WMC they will get the following message. Conclusion If you’re not a fan of Windows Media Center or want to disable it for whatever reason, the process is simple and there are a couple of ways you can do it.   • Windows 7/Ubuntu 12 dual boot deleted for Windows 8 installation. How to make grub rescue go away?

    I had a Windows 7/Ubuntu 12 dual boot and I decided to clean install Windows 8 over them. The problem is that after I deleted all partitions and installed windows I was getting an "Operation system not found", however after an "enter" the system will normally boot into Windows 8. I realized that Windows did their trick and put the system (not partition anymore?!?) "tag" (Disk Management) on my media hard drive. After trying to fix the boot/mbr to be able to boot from my main drive the "Operation system not found" changed to the "grub rescue" prompt. I know that I cannot use that because I have killed the grub files. Windows can still boot as long as I choose to boot from the media drive. The question is, is there any way to move the "system", whatever it is now, to the main drive and have the PC boot from there, while making grub disappear? And if that is possible after that, can I just make the Media drive inactive or I will have to somehow remove the "system" tag?
