  Windows died. So, I installed ubuntu, and have had difficulties downloading apps from the internet like skype or realplayer... etc. And It does not recognize my password. I needed to install drivers for my wireless from cd-rom. It does not show where to save new downloaded files and programs, and app and does not show how to install like windows does. So I would like to go back to windows. Window does not not start up anymore and I can not get safe mode with F8. It goes to black screen only and none of other parameters work when press f8! Any help is highly valued.

• wireless not connecting in 12.04 update

  I just updated from 10.04 to 12.04. I am not very knowledgeable at all with Ubuntu since it is still relatively new to me. I went through the whole update today and yesterday and now that it is finished it will not acknowledge that there are any wireless connections around, nor does it give me an option to pick one. it just tells me what ones I've used in the past. is there any way that someone can help me? I have read through and attempted almost every fix that everyone has found and nothing is working and I'm super confused.

  I have a Linksys WUSB600N v1 Dual-Band Wireless-N Network Adapter Ralink RT2870 USB dongle that worked flawlessly in 11.10. Since upgrading, I can't keep a connection for more than five minutes. The wild world of Google was unable to provide a solution, and I would rather not downgrade although that remains a possibility. • Wireless connects but can not connect to internet

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and I'm having trouble connecting to internet via wifi. Ethernet cable works though. So when I log on it auto logs on to my wifi connection at home but after about a minute or so it gives me a popup: network disabled something about .local domain and something about Avahi network (sorry if you need more on what the popup says I will reboot and look at it again). I am using Atheros wireless card. My laptop is Asus G73SW and on the forum at notebookreview.com G73SW Owner's Lounge people said they had no problem with connecting via wifi from install. Please help me because I would love to keep using this beautiful OS.

• System freeze after opening Wi-Fi menu can boot into the machine and use Internet in recovery mode

  So right now sitting in front of my Alienware area 51 desktop. It has a Broadcom Netlink BCM 5784M gigabit ethernet PCI E card. Most of the time able to get through the login screen and to the main screen if I click on the wireless settings on the top right-hand corner the system immediately freezes the cursor does not move at all keyboards are unresponsive. I was doing some quick Google searching and I found a suggestion to boot into recovery mode I did this and did a apt-get Distribution update which ran successfully installed then I rebooted into the regular system same thing I'm pretty sure it's the network card because even if I don't click the settings if a network related dialog opens such as disconnection or connection the system again immediately freezes. I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 ** update 1 ** Just was able to use my system for a little bit however when I went into Firefox and hit the web it again froze so obviously a driver problem but I'm not sure how to get drivers for Broadcom which apparently according to the description on stack-overflow is terrible Any ideas? Sorry for lack of punctuation on an ipad.

• brother MFC-J435W wireless scanning issue

  Thanks for taking the time to read this. I have a brother MFC-J435W and I was able to get the printer set up for wireless printing, but it is not allowing me to scan wirelessly. It gives me the message to "check connection". I'll tell you what I've done so far and maybe someone can help me out. I've installed the scanner driver and scan tool I installed Xsane (to see if it would allow the scanner to communicate with the computer and that didn't help). I've tried restarting the computer. After those things I am now at a loss as to where to go from here. Any help would be great. Thanks. I've also searched for this question in the Brother FAQ as well as on here and I haven't found an answer. Thanks again.

  I recently updated to 12.04 on my sony vaio VGN-N110G. I've had ubuntu on this laptop since 10.04 and haven't had any real problems. so i restarted my computer today and none of the unity desktop background showed up only the desktop with the files on it so i brought up the terminal and entered in unity -replace and restarted it and it came back up fine except that i noticed that my panel only had mail, volume, date/time, and power icons no wireless or bluetooth, i tried a couple of approaches to try and get it working again i tried nm-applet --sm-disable and it brought up a warning message, i'm not very skilled in code even though i've had ubuntu for four years but in the past versions it wasn't too big a problem

• Can't install wireless driver or get ubuntu to recognize ethernet cable

  I'm brand new to Ubuntu and I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to connect to the internet. When I try to activate the Broadcom STA wireless driver, it says "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log." So I try the steps detailed here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1967515&highlight=jockey Problem is, I can't connect to the internet via ethernet cable either. I tested the cable with another laptop and it works just fine. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Atheros AR9285 wireless extremely slow

  I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10, and things were going great.. But suddenly, the wifi connection went extremely slow. I have a 20 M connection and normally download files al 1 MB/s or so.. but today i dont get any faster than 120 KB/s. Also, if i use wired connection, the speed goes normal. Following some advice on the net i changed network-manager with wicd, but the issue hasn't gone away Any clues? PD. my wireless card is Atheros AR9285

  I have a computer running Ubuntu 14.04, it has 2 Ethernet ports. I would like to set up this computer so that the internet comes in on one of the ports and is then shared through the other port with the Trendnet wireless access point that my other devices would connect to and use the internet. I have looked online for information on setting this up but have not been able to find anything.   Okay, so I'm pretty new to the whole Ubuntu thing. I installed it yesterday alongside Windows 8, and it installed fine. Then I started it up and tried to connect to my wireless router. It wouldn't give me the option and the only thing that I could find was Edit Connections thing along the top which I didn't understand at all and just ended up confusing me. Can someone give me a simple explanation as to what I have to do? My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C855-18D. Thanks guys!

• How to set up router with DSL?

  I have a Verizon DSL connection. I am new to being the one who has to maintain the net. We have the Verizon modem and plugged into it is a belkin router. I did not alter the configuration on either of the devices. We get a net connection, though I have issues joining any form of online game. Some refuse to connect, others are slow. I have read that perhaps I need to use the modem in "bridge mode" to the wireless router? Would that fix my issues? Or do I just have to open ports or something similar. I really have no clue what could be the problem. Could someone advice me how to get this working with Ubuntu?

• Wifi works perfectly on Windows, but drops on Ubuntu

  I have a dual-boot computer with Windows XP on one partition and Ubuntu 10.10 on the other. In Windows XP I can connect to a hidden wireless network (WPA-PSK AES) perfectly, and I was finally able to install the driver for the adapter on Ubuntu (RNX-N180UBE, hardware id RTL8191SU). It works fine when I first boot the computer and log in, but then after a few minutes the network suddenly stops working completely. If I try to reconnect it, the network manager claims to have connected, but in actuality it's still down. At some points, I have been able to connect to a public network even while the private network didn't work, but that eventually wouldn't work at all either.

• MacMini (running Ubuntu 14.04) loses wlan connection when uploading larger files (several 100 mb) via ownCloud

  I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on an old MacMini with the intention of running it as a homeserver. Additionally I installed ownCloud and tried to sync some files both from a laptop running elementaryOS and a desktop running windows 7. Syncing smaller files workes like a charm (4000 files at <10mb each) but when it comes to bigger files (1 GB ubuntu iso e.g.) the upload failes after 20-100mb. I can't ping the server anymore and the server can't ping me. It still shows up in our router as connected though. Disconnecting and reconnecting the wlan connection fixes the issue until the next attempt at syncing.   This is the first time I installed ubuntu. I first installed 11.04 then upgraded. When I installed 11.04, the wireless card was detected and the driver was installed instantly. Everything worked so far. The thing is that as soon as I upgraded to 12.04, it stopped working. I've tried several solutions from all of the internet but nothing seems to work. What can I do? I really don't know much about ubuntu.

• Issues running alongside windows and connecting to wireless network

  Okay so I'm trying to get started with ubuntu but I'm encountering a couple problems: When I boot up the CD and try to install, it does not recognize that I have windows 7 installed and just sees it as unallocated space so the only way I've been able to install it is by wiping the drive which was fine, but it'd be nice to be able to boot either. And secondly, I cannot figure out how to get wireless working. When I try to connect on the initial installation process it tells me to connect to my adapter and just asks for a password. I suspect it could be a driver issue but I wouldn't know where to find it. I have an AR9485 atheros adapter and am attempting to run ubuntu 14.04. Thanks

• All wireless networks suddenly disappear every once in a while

  Lately, about every 15-60 minutes, my wireless internet connection disappears. When it does I can't find any other wireless network, though such networks exist. Only after rebooting the system, it goes back to normal and finds wireless networks, but only for a while. 15-60 minutes later it's disconnected again, not finding any wireless network. I'm using Windows 7 on Lenovo Thinkpad X201s. What could it be?

• Broadcom wireless card disappears after restart

  I used 'additional drivers' to install 'Broadcom STA wireless driver' and it returns an error. Within jockey.log it says the following numerous times. 2011-02-14 21:24:06,945 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted After it returns the error the network card will work temporarily until I restart the laptop. When I restart I got to go through the procedure again of trying to activate the driver, returns an error however it works temporarily. The network card is as follows on a Dell Inspiron 1545: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] Rev 01 I have been trying to solve this myself for many hours. • System update and now no wireless connection in Ubuntu 10.04

  I'm running an older version of Ubuntu (10.04), and updated yesterday through the update manager. The system informed me I needed to restart, so I did, then immediately shut down the system and went to work. When I rebooted later in the evening, I couldn't connect to my wireless router. I could find my connection and had the passcode and all that usual business, but could this be a kernel or driver issue caused by the update? If so, how can I fix it? I've attempted to go through the troubleshooter, but to no avail. Additionally, I put off upgrading to the next stage of Ubuntu for so long that I can no longer prompt the system to ask me if I'd like to. Any way to change this?

  Recently, my wireless card shut off on my laptop (System76 Bonp3 running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS). Awhile back, my keyboard had a meeting with a cup of coffee, and my F11 key no longer works. The key binding for turning my card back on happens to be Fn + F11, so I cannot turn my wifi on. The only solution I can think of is to somehow change this to be bound to another key. I'm looking for the script that handles this particular hardware switch so I can bind it elsewhere.

  I use my Thinkpad laptop with a docking station. The docking station is connected to my router via LAN. When I walk around the house I use my laptop with WLAN. Is it possible (and how) to manage these devices with a script or something to work like this: If a LAN-Connection is up, the OS should turn off Wifi and if LAN-Connection gets lost (undocking) Wifi should turn on automatically.
