  • Mac, PDFKit, PDF/X

    I'm in need of generating and viewing PDF/X-1a. After spending quite some time I came to the conclusion that the only way (hopefully someone will prove me wrong) to achieve this is to use Cocoa. More context: I need to generate PDF/X-1a, that is, all the fonts embeded, spot colors, overprint, ... preferably from Python. But the only libraries which support such things are iText and perhaps and Apache FOP. The first one could be used with Jython, which is ok but not optimal. But then, I simply could not find any viable viewer. Poppler, xpdf, Sumatra, mupdf, ghostscirpt - all of them - just cannot handle large CMYK pdfs, lots of text, ... I really would like to use open sourced libraries but unfortuntatelly the only option I see right now is to buy Mac as I saw one could print (Save-as) to built-in PDF printer under PDF/X conformance and I expect Preview to be comparable, if not better, to Acrobat. But I'm not sure if is it even possible to programmatically access the MacOS libraries responsible for generating PDF? I'm asking because I heard not everything from MacOS is available via public API... (And what Python goes, I thought I could use PyObjC..?) Any others ideas are of course very welcomed!

    I'm developing a simple GAE application that crawl some data from a given site and present it formatted in html\css. What i would like to do now is to offer the "Export to PDF feature" trasforming the formatted html\css to PDF. I've imported Reportlab Toolkit and it works good but it's not what i need since it forces me to create PDF manually like: pcanvas.drawString(10, 10, 'This is the title Blah blah blah') What i really need is a library like PISA that trasform Html\Css to PDF. Anyone has managed to succesfully intregrate and use PISA on Google App Engine? Any hints?

  • How to print PDF on default network printer using GhostScript (gswin32c.exe) shell command

    I'd like to print PDF file(s) on windows' network printer via GhostScript. (I dont want to use Adobe Reader) I've read gswin32c.exe which can do the job. I experimented with many commands and coudn't find the way how to force gs to print PDF on my (windows default) network drive. I don't need point exact network printer- default can be used. But if there is no such option I'm happy to pass printer name as well. (I've tried with param -SDevice="\server_IP\printer_name" but this didnt work as well...)   • Looking for a reporting tool that will allow vector graphics in output file (PDF)

    I have been tasked with evaluating our current system that we use for creating and outputing reports. Currently we are using Crystal Reports ver 8, (I know that this is and old version.), which has a custom commandline app that we wrote in C# to execute the report for a given parameter passed through the command line. We like Crystal becuase it's easy to setup and design the report. It's also easy to print and create a PDF file from crystal using our custom commandline program. One of the problems/complaints that we have is that Crystal does does not appear to have a method that will allow us to create a PDF file with a vector images, such as our company logo. Crystal Reports always converts an image into a bitmap. When the PDF is printed, the results are less than flattering, and the PDF file size is increased. Does anyone have any recomendadtions for a reporting product that we should consider?

    Hi Everyone, I have successfully created an email that sends on creation of a Kase, but now I need to attach a PDF that is created on the fly by Prawn and Prawno. Basically when you visit a kase such as application.com/kase/1 you just append the URL with .pdf i.e. application.com/kase/1. I spent ages getting the PDF to work and look how I wanted, but I can't figure out how to add the PDF to an auto sending email - mainly because I cannot work out how to give it a link as it's auto generated. Has anyone ever managed to get this to work? Thanks, Danny

However, after the request is processed, i get to see only 2 pages in the pdf file while my 'data' returns more than 2 records.     Are there any classes, COM objects, command line utilities, or anything else that I can make an API for that can convert a PDF to an HTML document? Obviously the conversion might be a little rough since PDFs can contain a lot more than HTML can describe. I found a utility called pdftohtml on Source Forge, but quite honestly it does a horrible job with the conversion. I don't care if the software is free or commercial, but is there anything out there at all that I can incorporate with my own software to do this sort of conversion at least decently? I know Google's developed their own method of doing this, since you can click "View as HTML" on a PDF attached to an email through Gmail, but I was hoping there was something out available to the public. Remember, PDF to HTML. I'm NOT worried about HTML to PDF.

    I have a process that creates form data in the form of an .fdf file that then has a reference to the .pdf document that is its "parent". is it possible with any .NET process to save that .pdf file (populated with the data that came in from the .fdf)? I need this because I need to email the fully populated .pdf documents out. I've been just sending the .fdfs with fully qualified links to the pdfs, but some people are having problems with it and I'd rather just go full-blown pdf if I can do it. FYI, my server does have a licensed copy of Acrobat installed if that matters....

    We are using PD4ML library to convert HTML to PDF. Is there any way with which I can include a image from the internet in my HTML to convert it into PDF. I am having problem in getting the image into PDF. I tried using base parameter in the PD4ML library but that didn't worked out. May be I am doing something wrong or PD4ML doesn't support including image from the internet. Because when I discussed my problem with other colleagues, found out that when we use the image from local server it gets to the PDF but image from internet don't.     I have a word doc with some ActiveX buttons on it. When one of these buttons is pressed, a UserForm pops up with a corresponding PDF displayed, like so: This is exactly the behavior I want. However, the problem is that for this to work, the user of the word doc needs to have each of the PDFs saved on their machine as well. And I've tried that: But I can't figure out how to access that PDF object in my VBA code, in order to display it on the UserForm. Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

    I am working on an online portal, where researchers can upload their research papers. One requirement is, that all PDFs are stored in PDF/A-format. As I can't rely on the users to generate PDF/A conforming documents, I need a tool to check and convert standard PDFs into PDF/A format. What is the best tool you know of? Price Quality Speed Available APIs Open-source tools would be prefered, but a search revealed none. iText can create PDF/a, but converting isn't easy to do, as you have to read every page and copy it to a new document, losing all bookmarks and annotations in this process. (At least as far as I know, if you know of an easy solution, let me know). APIs should be available for either PHP, Java or a command-line-tool should be provided. Please do not list either GUI-only or Online-only solutions.

One solution that might work is to enforce that they only upload pdf files. My question is two fold: Most importantly, is a pdf document virus proof?     I am looking for a bare-bones pdf viewer example using the QuickLook Monotouch API. I have searched and have found bits and pieces but just can't seem to get it all integrated. I will be reading the pdf from a file pre-saved to the Personal folder on the iPad and would like to show the pdf as a modal view.
