  • Why does my LED backlight laptop have a warning sticker about mercury?

    I recently purchased an Asus UL30Vt-X1, which according to the specs has an LED backlight for the screen. It definitely appears to be an LED backlight, but the laptop still has a sticker that the lamp in the display contains mercury. Why is this warning sticker there if it has an LED backlight? Edit: The exact wording from the sticker: "The lamp in this display contains mercury. Recycle or dispose according to local, state and federal law."

  • Apache works on http and https, SVN only on http

    I asked a question about this before, and got most of it fixed. If I switch off https redirect and go to http://mydomain.com/svn/test0, I get the authentication window popping up, and I can enter my AD credentials, and bingo. Switching https redirect back on, if I go to http://mydomain.com I am automatically redirected to https, which is what I want, and the 'CerntOS test page' pops up. Perfect. The problem occurs when I want to go to one of my test repos via https.   • Allow email from a particular sender through spam filter

    We are running exchange 2010 and are using the built in anti-spam feature. We have set up Content Filtering, IP Block List Providers, Sender ID, Sender Reputation and it filters out most of the junk but it also quarantines all emails from one of our customers. It is being quarantined because of the Content Filter agent (Report Below). How can I add an exception for this email address to the Content Filter. I can see how to setup an exception for a delivery address ("Don't filter messages sent TO the following recipients") but I want to add [email protected] to our safe list. I don't want to add the whole domain as it is a very popular ISP in Australia and we often get junk from them.     I'm looking for a tool to monitor custom PHP Error logs/Apache and possibly Java logs on remote development servers. I'm not looking for a full production log system like Splunk, but something that's a little more flexible than an ssh terminal doing a "tail -f". Perhaps something that will: * Monitor multiple log files to my local machine for searching/analysis later * Allow "alerts" when certain strings appear in the log * Provide some kind of tabbed/dashboard view of the multiple logs being monitored (in total less than 10 logs).

    I have a number of small portable apps and utilities. Where does Microsoft recommend we keep these? Lots of installed apps install themselves into \users{username}\appdata\local but it doesn't make much sense for me to put stuff there myself. \program files\ doesn't seem right either because non admin users don't have write access there. Is it recommended to create a \users{username}\applications directory?

    If anyone has had more than a couple of Microsoft tools or products installed (or a local install of the MSDN library) side by side, you might have noticed that opening help (hitting F1) or opening, say, SQL Server Books Online causes the help indexes to be re-indexed - this is usually after installing a new product or tool. This can be a really, really time consuming exercise! Does anyone know a way to prevent or opt out of having combined help indexes? At best, even just preventing the reindexing at all?

I understand that Google Chrome adblock addons currently hide ads, but can't prevent them from downloading. Is there a work around to this problem? Or it's simply a case of it's-not-yet-implemented? It seems relatively easy to create a local buffer in memory that mediates the transfer between two remotes, holding both hashes and data. Conversely, is there other (unix) software that implements this functionality?

    In the past I had installed MySQL as part of XAMPP in /Applications/XAMPP/ and the PHP that the system used (e.g. from command line) used /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/var/mysql/mysql.sock to connect with MySQL. Now I have installed MySQL 5 with macports and I want my system PHP to be able to use that. I think I must set PHP to use /opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock but where do I set this? Is there a php.ini for CLI PHP?

I know that we can use few variables like PKG_CONFIG_PATH and switches like --prefix with configure to get a software installed in a local directory, but sometimes when there are recursive dependencies it is becoming tough for me to install all the packages manually. Is there a better automated way? Update: What i meant by recursive dependencies is: to install package A, i should install package B, which in turn requires package C to be installed

    Is there a way to create a local user account on a Windows 7 Professional machine that stays active only for a certain length of time e.g 12 months? The reason for doing this is we loan out laptops for 12 months to students, however some are less than prompt at bringing them back, if they were locked out of the laptop this would force them to bring the machine back in if they hoped to continue using the laptop. Also a warning would be helpful, although I could do this with a scheduled task.

  • Is my Cisco switch port bad?

    I've been chasing a packet-loss and network stability issue for a handful of end-users on an internal network for the past few days... These issues surfaced last week, however the location was struck by lightning six weeks ago. I was seeing 5-10% packet loss between a stack of four Cisco 2960's and several PC's and phones on the other side of a 77-meter run. The PC's were run inline with the phones over a trunked link (switchport configuration pastebin). We were seeing dropped calls and interruptions in client-server applications and Microsoft Exchange connectivity. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps remotely, having a local technician do the following during breaks in user and production activity: change cables between the wall jack and device. change patch cables between the patch panel and switch port(s). try different switch ports within the 2960 stack. change end-user devices with known-good equipment (new phones, different PC's). clear switch port interface counters and monitor incrementing errors closely. (Pastebin output of sh int) Pored over the device logs and Observium RRD graphs. No link up/down issues from the switch side. change power strips on the end-user side. test cable runs from the Cisco 2960 using test cable-diagnostics tdr int Gi4/0/9 (clean)* test cable runs with a Tripp-Lite cable tester. (clean) run diagnostics on the switch stack members. (clean) In the end, it took three changes of switch ports to find a stable solution. The only logical conclusion is that a few Cisco 2960 switch ports are bad or flaky... Not dead, but not consistent in behavior either. I'm not used to seeing individual ports die in this manner. What else can I test or check to determine if these devices are bad? Is it common for single ports to have problems, rather than a contiguous bank of ports?   • Mercurial browser on Windows 2003 takes several refreshes before displaying repositories

    When attempt to browse my Mercurial repositories it usually takes several refreshes before the repository list is displayed. The configuration is as follows: Windows Server 2003 (Dedicated machine hosted by http://www.server4you.com/. Site has anonymous password protection with self-signed SSL. Mercurial 1.5.3 Python 2.6.5 Python for Windows 32 extensions 214 py2.6 isapi-wsgi 0.4.2 The repositories are being served via ISAPI using the standard hgwebdir_wspi.py file (copy to follow). Other problems with the repository server: Before doing a clone/push/etc I have to browse the repositories first otherwise hg on my local machine can not locate the site. I have one a repository with a large changeset that after a minute or so throw error "abort: error: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host". Will be asking another question for this problem.
