Configuring WPA WiFi in Ubuntu 10.10

Hello, I am trying to configure my wireless network on my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and am having a bit of difficulty. I am a complete Linux newb, but want to learn it, hence the reason I'm trying to set this up. Here's the vitals: It is a Gateway 600 YG2 laptop. It was previously running Windows XP, but I installed Ubuntu 10.10 in place of it (not a dual boot, I removed XP altogether). I have an old wireless card that I'm trying to resurrect. I haven't really used the card in a couple years, but it seems to still work, I just can't connect to my home's wireless network. The card is a Linksys WPC11 v2.5. When I plug it in, Ubuntu recognizes the network, but won't connect to it. My home network uses WPA encryption and the only connection type that Ubuntu's network manager is giving me is WEP and then it asks for a key -- I have no idea what that key should be. So, basically, I'm asking, is there a way I can instead connect through WPA? I've tried creating a new connection in network manager, but that won't work, it keeps falling back to the WEP connection and asking me for a key. I have tried to install the XP driver using ndiswrapper but I don't know if that's working or not. Is there a way to tell if: A) the card is working as it should B) the correct drivers are installed (again, I installed the XP one using ndiswrapper NET8180.INF, but I'm not sure what to do next) Any help would be appreciated. Did Adobe Photoshop just killed my Graphics Card for good?

I was working with Adobe Photoshop, just some regular work, when I came to edit a PSD file and change the text of some layer, when all of a sudden the PC froze. No mouse, screen is frozen, keyboard strokes aren't getting me anything, no Task Manager, nada. So I rebooted my PC, and then something quite terrifying appeared before my eyes. It was not the Checkdisk utility that was launched, that made me terrified (by the way, that reboot damaged the partition table of an external HDD that was connected at the time to my PC, but that's another story). It was the screen itself. Please have a look. So after Checkdisk finished and Windows loaded, I noticed that the resolution was not right. Instead of 1440x900 which I had set, it was 1280x1024. When I went to change it back, I had no option to change back to my old resolution, and has only 3 other general resolution properties, as if my Video Card (GeForce 8800 GTS btw) was not recognized. And what do you know, in the Device Manager it appeared with an exclamation mark. Inside the hardware, it said this: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) Uninstalling the drivers, downloading the newest drivers from NVIDIA and installing them did not work. It always comes back to this. So, do you have any advice before I go out and buy a new graphics card? I thought this was the only option left, but maybe the experts at Super User can help me out. By the way, the dotted screen appears after every reboot, and I see the dots when the ASUS Motherboard screen shows up at boot. Thanks in advance.

Determining how all memory is used in Windows Server 2008

Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 system, which has 12GB of RAM. If I list all processes in the Task Manager, and SUM() the memory of each process (Working Set, Memory (Private Working Set), Commit Size, ...), I never reach more than 4-5GB that should be "in use". However, task manager reports this server has 11GB in use via the "Performance" tab. I'm failing in determining where all that used RAM is going. It doesn't seem to be system cache, but I can not be sure. It might be a memory leak in one of the appliances, but I'm struggling to find out which one. The server's memory keeps filing up, and eventually forces us to reboot the device to clear it. Windows 7 Icons, Buttons, and Tabs corrupted...Professional 32-bit

The other day, about two or three ago, I was simply typing in a Microsoft Word document when my screen froze. After a few moments, it went black...I thought it was my vid hardware (dual nVidia 9800 GTs). Anyway, I did a hard reboot, and chose to Start Normally. The system blue screened telling me there was a failure in the Memory Manager. So then I thought maybe a RAM failure or vid memory failure. I attempted reboot again, this time I got presented with the option to repair windows...so I went with that. The repair app finished and did an auto reboot. This time I got all the way back to my desktop where in a matter of a about 30 seconds, the system blue screened again and pointed to the Memory Manager as the area of cause. Again I rebooted, the repair thingy came up again and I allowed it to do its thing. Deciding if the same failure occured I'd begin pulling hardware to see at what point I may have found the possibly defective party. However, this time it rebooted, I got back to desktop and no crash. All looked well, untill I looked at the baloon messages when hovering over the System Bar icons. Also when I opened any of my browsers, the tabs had no text, and any window that pops up that has regular buttons (OK, Cancel, etc., etc.) looks weird. The buttons are really really long and have no text. So it seems like the system is once again running smoothly, however something has gotten corrupted.. something relating to drawing basic windows user interface objects. Help...all ideas are respected and appreciated. Have a great day everyone!

Windows Update broke Wirless driver - Can't get it working again

I naively installed a driver update incoming from Windows Updates yesterday. That caused my Wifi on my Notebook (HP ELitebook 2740p) to break. The network is working as I tried it with my other mobile devices. When installing said driver, it told me that the installation failed. I tried to do a system restore, which did not help getting wifi connectivity back. The device said it was working, but did not get any wifi connection and did not discover any networks. What I tried next was to uninstall the device from my Device Manager and install either the current drivers found through windows, then I tried the same with the current drivers on the HP driver page. both of those attempts failed. It always tells me that installation failed when I uninstall and reinstall drivers. If I try to update the broken driver via internet, it tells me it is up to date, and in the device manager it still views as broken. Next, I 'played' around a bit and reinstalled drivers, and I managed to install drivers from 2012, and when trying to update drivers manually and picking drivers that match the device, it lets me choose between drivers from 2010 and 2014. 2014 would be the current one, picking the 2010 driver leads to the driver being accepted. However, no wireless network can be found. I'm pretty much out of ideas by now, short of reinstalling. The only option I can still think of was that the device broke at the exact moment I installed the new windows driver, but I find that a bit unlikely. Any help would be appreciated fixing this issue.

Remote Desktop svchost (networkservice) & lsa.exe high cpu usage, hangs on welcome screen

We have deployed an RDS Farm with 12 virtual RDS servers using Hyper V. Currently some users are not able to log on. After passing credentials to the connection broker, the session hangs on the "Welcome" screen. Using resource monitor we've seen that svchost (with the "networkservice" service) has a CPU usage of 50%, when viewing the wait chain on the process it displays that it's waiting for a lsa.exe to finish. We can't kill any of the users processes, even when trying with taskkill /f. Suspending lsa.exe did work but didn't have any effect. The networkservice also couldn't be restarted. Also, if this happens, the current users logged on to the RDS server can't be displayed. Task manager crashes when viewing the users, RDS service manager crashes when viewing the users (even remotely) and the cmd command "query session" doesn't work. No antivirus is installed on the RDS server. The only thing we can do is rebooting the server, which is not an option because of the fact that other users are in active sessions. Does anyone have ANY idea what's going on? We didn't encounter this in our pre-production setup.

Can't upgrade MySQL Server on new Ubuntu 12.04 install

After freshly installing Ubuntu server 12.04, I did the usual apt-get update / apt-get upgrade, which failed for mysql-server-5.5: Setting up mysql-server-5.5 (5.5.31-0ubuntu0.12.04.2) ... start: Job failed to start invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed. dpkg: error processing mysql-server-5.5 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of mysql-server: mysql-server depends on mysql-server-5.5; however: Package mysql-server-5.5 is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing mysql-server (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured I tried a wide variety a approaches suggested by googling, which involved various combinations of apt-get remove/purge/install -f/reinstall, etc., with no luck. I also tried downloading the package directly from launchpad.net and running dpkg -i on it (this had worked for a similar issue with a kernel upgrade), but to no avail. I'm not actually particularly interested in what's going on with mysql, per se (though I will need to figure it out at some time); at this point, my primary concern is that I am unable to apt-get install other packages! What to do?

Can't install flash on Firefox or Chrome (but works fine on IE...)

I'm using a work computer (Lenovo) that I recently got from my IT department to replace an old machine. When I installed Firefox and Chrome, I needed to install Adobe Flash. However, the installation has failed on several occasions. I've taken all the usual steps: closing all programs and windows, installing updates and restarting machine, etc, but still the installation does not work. The download manager and status bars say that installation is complete, but I still can't view flash sites on FF or Chrome. Flash is working fine on IE though. Last thing: when I reboot the first dialog box that comes up is from Adobe Download Manager, and it says "Please shut down Internet Explorer before uninstall can complete". I'm confused since a) I've just rebooted so have yet to start IE and b) why UNinstall? My company does not support non-IE browsers so I'm not getting much help from our IT department. If necessary I can post screenshots of error messages and stuff if it comes to that, but hopefully someone will be able to diagnose the problem before that's necessary as I'm not the most tech savvy (despite being a huge fan of reddit...)

Android Actionbar Tabs + Fragments + Service

So, I have 3 problems with my code: 1) I want that each tab saves its state. So that a TextView shows changed text if it was changed. 2) if I go to Tab2 then to Tab1 I can't see the content of the fragments. Only if I touch on the already selected tab, it shows me the content 3) I can't correctly connect/bind and unbind service to Fragment Text must be changed from Service. Hi, I'm trying to build a chart program using presentation model. Using JGoodies for data binding was relatively easy for simple types like strings or numbers. But I can't figure out how to use it on a hashmap. I'll try to explain how the chart works and what my problem is: A chart consists of DataSeries, a DataSeries consists of DataPoints. I want to have a data model and to be able to use different views on the same model (e.g. bar chart, pie chart,...). Each of them consists of three classes. Need help with workflow in Alfresco

Hello SO community, I haven't had any luck getting help in the Alfresco forums, and I'm hoping for more here. We are building an application based on Alfresco and jBPM and I have defined a workflow, but I have either defined it wrong or am missing something or there are bugs in Alfresco integration with jBPM and I need help figuring out which and fixing it. Here is the problem: I have an advanced workflow and I am trying to launch it from JavaScript. However, when I go looking for the workflow in my task list it is not there, but it is in my completed task list. The default transition (the only transition) from the start node points at a task node which has four transitions. There are 8 tasks and 22 transitions in the workflow. When I use the workflow console to start the workflow and end the start task, it properly follows the default start node transition to the next task. The new task shows up in "show tasks" but does not show up in "show my tasks" (apparently because the task was marked completed for some reason, though it is not in the "end" node). Clearly the assignees are on the task object and not on the workflow object. I added the assignees aspect to the start-state task so that it could hold them (after I had a problem; initially they were not there) and possibly they are still sitting there, but the start-state has ended before I even get control back from the web script (not that it would help if it wasn't ended, I need it to be in "In Editing" as the start-state is only used to log that the workflow was started). It has always confused me that the properties that I need to set on each task need to be requested before the task is entered (when you choose a transition you must provide the data for the next task before you can actually move to the next task as you have to validate that you have all of the required data first and then signal the transition). However, the code to start the workflow is asynchronous and therefore does not return either the started workflow or the current task (which in my case would be "In Editing"). So, either way you cannot set variables such as bpm:assignees and bpm:dueDate. I wonder if this is the problem with the user task list. I'm setting the assignees in the property list, but maybe those assignees are going to the start-state task and are not getting passed to the "In Editing" task? Note that this is my first jBPM workflow, so please don't assume I know what I'm doing. If you see something that looks off, it probably is and I just don't know it. selectOneMenu - java.lang.NullPointerException when adding record to the database (JSF2 and JPA2-OpenJPA)

Good day to all; I'm developing a program using JSF2 and JPA2 (OpenJPA). Im also using IBM Rapid App Dev't v8 with WebSphere App Server v8 test server. I have two simple entities, Employee and Department. Each Department has many Employees and each Employee belongs to a Department (using deptno and workdept). My problem occurs when i tried to add a new employee and selecting a department from a combo box (using selectOneMenu - populated from Department table): when i run the program, the following error messages appeared: An Error Occurred: java.lang.NullPointerException Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException - java.lang.NullPointerException I also tried to make another program using Deptno and Workdept as String instead of integer, still doesn't work. Node.js Adventure - When Node Flying in Wind

In the first post of this series I mentioned some popular modules in the community, such as underscore, async, etc.. I also listed a module named “Wind (zh-CN)”, which is created by one of my friend, Jeff Zhao (zh-CN). Now I would like to use a separated post to introduce this module since I feel it brings a new async programming style in not only Node.js but JavaScript world. If you know or heard about the new feature in C# 5.0 called “async and await”, or you learnt F#, you will find the “Wind” brings the similar async programming experience in JavaScript. By using “Wind”, we can write async code that looks like the sync code. The callbacks, async stats and exceptions will be handled by “Wind” automatically and transparently. What’s the Problem: Dense “Callback” Phobia Let’s firstly back to my second post in this series. As I mentioned in that post, when we wanted to read some records from SQL Server we need to open the database connection, and then execute the query. In Node.js all IO operation are designed as async callback pattern which means when the operation was done, it will invoke a function which was taken from the last parameter. In the real project the logic would be more complicated. This means our application might be messed up and the business process will be fragged by many callback functions. I would like call this “Dense Callback Phobia”. So it’s very hard to understand what on earth this code will do. And since Node.js utilizes non-blocking IO mode, we cannot invoke those operations one by one, as they will be executed concurrently. For example, in this post when I tried to copy the records from Windows Azure SQL Database (a.k.a. WASD) to Windows Azure Table Storage, if I just insert the data into table storage one by one and then print the “Finished” message, I will see the message shown before the data had been copied. This is because all operations were executed at the same time. But it cannot promise that the records will be inserted in sequence. It’s available in NPM so that we can install it through “npm install wind”. Now let’s create a very simple Node.js application as the example. This application will take some website URLs from the command arguments and tried to retrieve the body length and print them in console. Then at the end print “Finish”. I’m going to use “request” module to make the HTTP call simple so I also need to install by the command “npm install request”. As you can see the finish message was printed at the beginning, and the pages’ length retrieved in a different order than we specified. This is because in this code the request command, console logging command are executed asynchronously and concurrently. Now let’s introduce “Wind” to make them executed in order, which means it will request the websites one by one, and print the message at the end. First of all we need to import the “Wind” package and make sure the there’s only one global variant named “Wind”, and ensure it’s “Wind” instead of “wind”. 1: var Wind = require("wind"); Next, we need to tell “Wind” which code will be executed asynchronously so that “Wind” can control the execution process. In this case the “request” operation executed asynchronously so we will create a “Task” by using a build-in helps function in “Wind” named Wind.Async.Task.create. 1: var requestBodyLengthAsync = function(url) { 2: return Wind.Async.Task.create(function(t) { 3: request(url, function(error, response, body) { 4: if(error || response.statusCode != 200) { 5: t.complete("failure", error); 6: } 7: else { 8: var data = 9: { 10: uri: response.request.uri.href, 11: length: body.length 12: }; 13: t.complete("success", data); 14: } 15: }); 16: }); 17: }; The code above created a “Task” from the original request calling code. In “Wind” a “Task” means an operation will be finished in some time in the future. A “Task” can be started by invoke its start() method, but no one knows when it actually will be finished. The Wind.Async.Task.create helped us to create a task. The only parameter is a function where we can put the actual operation in, and then notify the task object it’s finished successfully or failed by using the complete() method. In the code above I invoked the request method. If it retrieved the response successfully I set the status of this task as “success” with the URL and body length. If it failed I set this task as “failure” and pass the error out. Next, we will change the main() function. In “Wind” if we want a function can be controlled by Wind we need to mark it as “async”. This should be done by using the code below. 1: var main = eval(Wind.compile("async", function() { 2: })); When the application is running, Wind will detect “eval(Wind.compile(“async”, function” and generate an anonymous code from the body of this original function. Then the application will run the anonymous code instead of the original one. It tells Wind, the operation next to $await will be executed asynchronously, and the main thread should be paused until it finished (or failed). So in this case, my application will be pause when the first response was received, and then print its body length, then try the next one. At the end, print the finish message. Finally, execute the main function. Someone may assume that Wind utilizes “eval” to execute some code dynamically while “eval” is very low performance. But I would say, Wind does NOT use “eval” to run the code. It only use “eval” as a flag to know which code should be compiled at runtime. When the code was firstly been executed, Wind will check and find “eval(Wind.compile(“async”, function”. So that it knows this function should be compiled. Then it utilized parse-js to analyze the inner JavaScript and generated the anonymous code in memory. Then it rewrite the original code so that when the application was running it will use the anonymous one instead of the original one. Since the code generation was done at the beginning of the application was started, in the future no matter how long our application runs and how many times the async function was invoked, it will use the generated code, no need to generate again. So there’s no significant performance hurt when using Wind. Wind in My Previous Demo Let’s adopt Wind into one of my previous demonstration and to see how it helps us to make our code simple, straightforward and easy to read and understand. In this post when I implemented the functionality that copied the records from my WASD to table storage, the logic would be like this. 1, Open database connection. 2, Execute a query to select all records from the table. 3, Recreate the table in Windows Azure table storage. 4, Create entities from each of the records retrieved previously, and then insert them into table storage. 5, Finally, show message as the HTTP response. But as the image below, since there are so many callbacks and async operations, it’s very hard to understand my logic from the code. Now let’s use Wind to rewrite our code. First of all, of course, we need the Wind package. Then we need to include the package files into project and mark them as “Copy always”. Add the Wind package into the source code. As we can see the functions executed one by one and then finally the response back to me browser. Scaffold Functions in Wind Wind provides not only the async flow control and compile functions, but many scaffold methods as well. We can build our async code more easily by using them. I’m going to introduce some basic scaffold functions here. In the code above I created some functions which wrapped from the original async function such as open database, create table, etc.. All of them are very similar, created a task by using Wind.Async.Task.create, return error or result object through Task.complete function. In fact, Wind provides some functions for us to create task object from the original async functions. If the original async function only has a callback parameter, we can use Wind.Async.Binding.fromCallback method to get the task object directly. For example the code below returned the task object which wrapped the file exist check function. 1: var Wind = require("wind"); 2: var fs = require("fs"); 3: 4: fs.existsAsync = Wind.Async.Binding.fromCallback(fs.exists); In Node.js a very popular async function pattern is that, the first parameter in the callback function represent the error object, and the other parameters is the return values. In this case we can use another build-in function in Wind named Wind.Async.Binding.fromStandard. So I personally suggest writing the wrapped method manually. Another scaffold method in Wind is the parallel tasks coordination. In this example, the steps of open database, retrieve records and recreated table should be invoked one by one, but it can be executed in parallel when copying data from database to table storage. In Wind there’s a scaffold function named Task.whenAll which can be used here. Task.whenAll accepts a list of tasks and creates a new task. It will be returned only when all tasks had been completed, or any errors occurred. It also includes exception solution which means any exceptions will be reported to the caller function. Summary In this post I introduced a Node.js module named Wind, which created by my friend Jeff Zhao. As you can see, different from other async library and framework, adopted the idea from F# and C#, Wind utilizes runtime code generation technology to make it more easily to write async, callback-based functions in a sync-style way. By using Wind there will be almost no callback, and the code will be very easy to understand. Currently Wind is still under developed and improved. Debian apt dependency mismatch (libc6)

Earlier, I tried to install package via apt-get (cython), but it failed with the Errors were encountered while processing: message, and since then, apt is refusing to install anything. apt-get check output below: root@dix:~# apt-get check Reading package lists... Try using -f. Apt/aptitude don't seem to be able to fix this dependency issue, and I don't know what to do. Edit: Running apt-get -f install results in no change, and my sources are all squeeze. Running apt-get update then apt-get dist-upgrade show no change either. Remote Desktop Services Gateway Issue

Alright fellow techies here's the rundown. I have installed Server 2008 r2 Remote Dekstop Services on a VM in my network. I installed the following RD role services: RD Session Host, Licensing, Connection Broker, Gateway, Web Access. When I set things up originally, the gateway server and RDWeb worked as it should locally. After getting things running locally (remoteserver.domainname.local) I wanted to test things externally. From the outside, I couldn't get things running (meaning I could connect to rdweb access externally, but when I tried to run an app I would get the message "can't connect/find computer"). Here's my setup for external access The VM has every RD Services role services installed on it, meaning it acts as gateway, rd web access, session host, licensing, the whole bit. I made a self-signed certificate on the gateway server (gateway.domainname.net is the cert name). Internally, I have a secondary forward-lookup zone called domainname.net with an A record gateway pointing to the local IP of the gateway server. On our public DNS (domainname.net) I have an A record gateway. This is to access the RDWeb externally. In IIS I have the following authentication settings RDWeb: All disabled except for anonymous authentication Rpc: All disabled except for basic and windows RpcWithCert: All disbled except for windows authentication I have the necessary web access config in our sonicwall tz210 (https and rdp, external ip pointing to local ip of rds server) RAP and CAP have the correct user and computer groups, authentication, and allowed devices After all of this, here's what happens accessing externally. I can login correctly to RDWeb Access (I've tried a bogus login, I can't login to it so that's working properly). I see the Apps for use. I click on an app, click connect, the credential window opens, I put in the correct user creds, it tries to connect to the gateway server, but then the cred window comes back in view. I tried to reach a limit of failed logins, but never reached one, haha. So from the same external client machine I try to connect to the gateway through a Remote Desktop connection. I put in the correct gateway settings in the RD window, try to connect and get the same results as I did in RDWeb access. I checked the event logs on the RD Services machine and saw the following event IDs around the time I tried to login externally: ID 6037 with the message "The program svchost.exe, with the assigned process ID 2168, could not authenticate locally by using the target name host/gateway.domainname.net. The target name used is not valid. A target name should refer to one of the local computer names, for example, the DNS host name. Try a different target name." ID 10 RADWebAccess "RD Web Access was unable to access gateway.domainname.net, which is the server that is specified as running the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management service. I don't think the VM has a null SID. The SID of the VM and it's physical host have different SIDS. I can access the blank page for rpc externally using the external gateway name. It seems like authentication is a problem. Also, is it a problem that the external name of the gateway server doesn't match the local name? The external name (which the cert is based on) is gateway.domainname.net and the internal name is remoteserver.domainname.local. That's the only thing I can think of that would be the problem, but the external name has to be different from the local right? Internally, I ping gateway.domainname.net and it gives me the correct local IP of the server. Now, there isn't an actual computer name in AD, but I don't know how I would achieve that? I hope I've been clear....any help would be appreciated. I think I'm close to achieving this. :)
