• Consoles in Ubuntu and automatic upgrade

  So I recently discovered that ubuntu is simultaneously running 6 consoles in addition to the GUI that everybody uses, which can be accessed by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 ... +F6 and then the default GUI with Ctrl+Alt+F7. What use can these consoles have when I can just open a terminal in the GUI mode? Also, why is having consoles like this advantageous for computer users; wouldn't a GUI be much more simplistic? Also, running the console told me that I was running a development version of Ubuntu Quantal which is version 12.10. The login screen (correctly?) says that I'm running 12.04 LTS. What does that mean? Thanks everybody!

• Dynamic Terrain Texture

  I've been looking at a 2D physics game called 'Hill Climb Racing' (Android and iOS) and was wondering how they went about texturing the terrain? I've had a think about it and I've come up with nothing and finding a resource on the web has proved impossible. Please help. The game mentioned uses Cocos2d. Would it be just as doable in a different environment? EDIT: I was looking at another question: Drawing large 2D sidescroller level terrain The end result is what I'm looking for, but in my mind I was thinking that there would be some way to add this effect (using small textures) to some terrain specified by vertices rather than making a very large image to match whatever is seen in the level.

• How do I get a Canon MP550 working with Gutenprint?

  My printer canonMP550 doesn't work with i7 x86 64bit under Ubuntu 11.10 with cups+Gutenprint2.5.7. What I found, is: in gutenprint it is translated into ip4000 only, but it belongs to the group ip4700, which is translated into ip4300 (parameter). I tried to correct, read only, what to do? Next is gutenprint uses cups 1.2, but installed is cups 1.5 , so instead system/library/ color sync/ ..... it is usr/share/color/icc/sRGB.icc. So this seem to be real bugs, but Ii am new and need help to correct this staff!

• How to customise window decoration whilst using Compiz on Xubuntu?

  I have installed Compiz on Xubuntu 11.10 with sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz --replace ccp & In the process the XFCE window decoration theme is overridden by that of Compiz (Gtk) which uses the Adwaita theme instead of the Greybird theme. Since Gtk is doing window decoration, I cannot change it back using the XFCE settings. I just need compiz for scale and window switch and I would like to return window decoration to XFCE (Xfwm4) or to be able to change the Gtk window decoration theme. How can I do that? I have found part of the (workaround) answer already: download Greybird Gtk theme install theme (here is where I failed I think) use dconf-editor to change the Gtk theme in org.gnome.desktop.interface The problem really at stage 2 is where do I place the theme? I tried in ~/.themes/ and then changed the value of gtk-theme in the editor to Greybird. But I saw no change.

• Cannot add DataTables.net javascript into Joomla 1.5

  I've been having this problem where i couldn't add Datatables.net javascript into my Joomla article. I have been trying to include it through Jumi. To say that my editor strips of the tag is somewhat not right as I have been able to execute Google Chart API in Joomla which also uses javascript. Any clue why? • Website misclassified by websense

  I received the following email from a user of one of our websites: This morning I tried to log into example.com and I was blocked by websense at work because it is considered a "social networking" site or something. I assume the websense filter is maintained by a central location, so I'm hoping that by letting you guys know you can get it unblocked. per Wikipedia, Websense is web filtering or Internet content-control software. This means one (or more) of our sites is being miscategorized by websense as "social networking" and thus disallowed for access at any workplace that uses websense to control what websites their users can and cannot access during work hours. (I know, they are monsters!) How do we dispute this websense classification error, as our websites should generally be considered "information technology" and never "social networking"? How do we know what category websense has put our sites in, so we can pro-actively make sure they're not wrong?

• Solutions for software using many calls to a server

  I am developing software that uses many calls to a server. On a client side it's a Silverlight application. Almost every time a user clicks on a button in it, it sends 1-5 WCF calls to a server. There can be up to dozen or so users at a time. The server is a database server that serves data to a client. I am an intermediate level developer and am thinking about caching some data and syncing my changes from time to time. Are there any official solutions or technologies for it, like, patterns and such?

  After reading this section you should be able to Explain how nodes exchange wireless signals Identify potential obstacles to successful transmission and their repercussions, such as interference and reflection Understand WLAN architecture Specify the characteristics of popular WLAN transmission methods including 802.11 a/b/g/n Install and configure wireless access points and their clients Describe wireless MAN and WAN technologies, including 802.16 and satellite communications The Wireless Spectrum All wireless signals are carried through the air by electromagnetic waves. The wireless spectrum is a continuum of the electromagnetic waves used for data and voice communication. The wireless spectrum falls between 9KHZ and 300 GHZ. Characteristics of Wireless Transmission Antennas Each type of wireless service requires an antenna specifically designed for that service. The service’s specification determine the antenna’s power output, frequency, and radiation pattern. A directional antenna issues wireless signals along a single direction. An omnidirectional antenna issues and receives wireless signals with equal strength and clarity in all directions The geographical area that an antenna or wireless system can reach is known as its range Signal Propagation LOS (line of sight) uses the least amount of energy and results in the reception of the clearest possible signal. When there is an obstacle in the way, the signal may… pass through the object or be obsrobed by the object or may be subject to reflection, diffraction or scattering. Reflection – waves encounter an object and bounces off it. Diffraction – signal splits into secondary waves when it encounters an obstruction Scattering – is the diffusion or the reflection in multiple different directions of a signal Signal Degradation Fading occurs as a signal hits various objects. Because of fading, the strength of the signal that reaches the receiver is lower than the transmitted signal strength. The further a signal moves from its source, the weaker it gets (this is called attenuation) Signals are also affected by noise – the electromagnetic interference) Interference can distort and weaken a wireless signal in the same way that noise distorts and weakens a wired signal. Frequency Ranges Older wireless devices used the 2.4 GHZ band to send and receive signals. This had 11 communication channels that are unlicensed. Newer wireless devices can also use the 5 GHZ band which has 24 unlicensed bands Narrowband, Broadband, and Spread Spectrum Signals Narrowband – a transmitter concentrates the signal energy at a single frequency or in a very small range of frequencies Broadband – uses a relatively wide band of the wireless spectrum and offers higher throughputs than narrowband technologies The use of multiple frequencies to transmit a signal is known as spread-spectrum technology. In other words a signal never stays continuously within one frequency range during its transmission. One specific implementation of spread spectrum is FHSS (frequency hoping spread spectrum). Another type is known as DSS (direct sequence spread spectrum) Fixed vs. Mobile Each type of wireless communication falls into one of two categories Fixed – the location of the transmitted and receiver do not move (results in energy saved because weaker signal strength is possible with directional antennas) Mobile – the location can change WLAN (Wireless LAN) Architecture There are two main types of arrangements Adhoc – data is sent directly between devices – good for small local devices Infrastructure mode – a wireless access point is placed centrally, that all devices connect with 802.11 WLANs The most popular wireless standards used on contemporary LANs are those developed by IEEE’s 802.11 committee. Over the years several distinct standards related to wireless networking have been released. Four of the best known standards are also referred to as Wi-Fi. They are…. 802.11b 802.11a 802.11g 802.11n These four standards share many characteristics. i.e. All 4 use half duplex signalling Follow the same access method Access Method 802.11 standards specify the use of CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) to access a shared medium. Using CSMA/CA before a station begins to send data on an 802.11 network, it checks for existing wireless transmissions. If the source node detects no transmission activity on the network, it waits a brief period of time and then sends its transmission. If the source does detect activity, it waits a brief period of time before checking again. The destination node receives the transmission and, after verifying its accuracy, issues an acknowledgement (ACT) packet to the source. If the source receives the ACK it assumes the transmission was successful, – if it does not receive an ACK it assumes the transmission failed and sends it again. Association Two types of scanning… Active – station transmits a special frame, known as a prove, on all available channels within its frequency range. When an access point finds the probe frame, it issues a probe response. Passive – wireless station listens on all channels within its frequency range for a special signal, known as a beacon frame, issued from an access point – the beacon frame contains information necessary to connect to the point. Re-association occurs when a mobile user moves out of one access point’s range and into the range of another. In 1998 other manufacturers joined Ericsson in the Special Interest Group (SIG) whose aim was to refine and standardize the technology.   I'm making a game that uses an Entity/Component architecture basically a port of Artemis's framework to c++,the problem arises when I try to make a PlayerControllerComponent, my original idea was this. class PlayerControllerComponent: Component { public: virtual void update() = 0; }; class FpsPlayerControllerComponent: PlayerControllerComponent { public: void update() { //handle input } }; and have a system that updates PlayerControllerComponents, but I found out that the artemis framework does not look at sub-classes the way I thought it would. So all in all my question here is should I make the framework aware of subclasses or should I add a new Component like object that is used for logic.

• Slow gvfs Samba Performance

  if I use/acces a Samba Share using Nautilus or manually using "gvfs-mount smb://SERVER-IP/Share" I get a poor Performance, only about 7 mb/s on my 100 Mbit Network. If I access the same Share on Windows I get Fullspeed 100 Mbit (About 11 mb/s), also if I mount using sudo mount -t cifs //SERVER-IP/Share /mountpount which uses cifs instead of gvfs I get fullspeed too, so can anyone tell me if there is a Performance Problem/Bug in gvfs or how gvfs is using SMB Shares differerently ? I tested read Perfomance (From my Network Samba Share) with multiples files and always, the cifs-Version is fullspeed and the GVFS-Version has some mb/s less. After some research I found some tips to optimize the Samba Settings of my Ubuntu Installation and some network tuning tips, but as the CIFS mounted share gets the full Network Speed I don't believe its that kind of problem.

• Why is there a "new" in Go?

  I'm still puzzled as why we have new in Go. When you want to instantiate a struct, you do t := Thing{} and, obviously, you can get a pointer to a new instance by doing t := &Thing{} But there's also this possibility : t := new(Thing) This last one seems a little alien to me. &Thing{} is as clear and concise as new(Thing) and it uses only constructs you often use elsewhere. It's also more extensible as you might change it to &Thing{3} or &Thing{Feets:7}. In my opinion, having a supplementary keyword is costly, it makes the language more complex and adds to what you must know. And it might mask to newcomers what's behind instantiating a struct. It also makes one more reserved word. So what's the reasoning behind new ? Is it something useful ? Should we use it ?

• Does anyone prefer proportional fonts?

  I was reading the wikipedia article on programming style and noticed something in an argument against vertically aligned code: Reliance on mono-spaced font; tabular formatting assumes that the editor uses a fixed-width font. Most modern code editors support proportional fonts, and the programmer may prefer to use a proportional font for readability. To be honest, I don't think I've ever met a programmer who preferred a proportional font. Nor can I think of any really good reasons for using them. Why would someone prefer a proportional font?

  When pgAdmin III is used to open a PostgreSQL database the following message appears. There does not seem to be any obvious package listed in the Ubuntu Software Center for this. The server lacks instrumentation functions. pgadmin III uses some support functions that are not available by default in all PostgreSQL versions. These enable some tasks that make life easier when dealing with log files and configuration files. The adminpack is installed and activated by default if you are running the one-click installer of PostgreSQL. On Unix, you may have to install the contrib package, either with your package installer tool or by compilation.

  From Lafore's "Data Structures and Algorithms in Java": (about insertion sort (which uses copy + shift instead of swap (used in bubble and selection sort))) However, a copy isn’t as time-consuming as a swap, so for random data this algo- rithm runs twice as fast as the bubble sort and faster than the selectionsort. Also author doesn't mention how time consuming shift is. From my POV copy is the simplest pointer assignment operation. While swap is 3x pointer assignment operations. Which doesn't take much time. Also shift of N elemtns is Nx pointer assignment operations. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Please explain, why what author says is true? I don't understand.

• Connection manager detects network but won't connect

  I've just installed 12.04 on my home desktop. Because of where it's located, in order not to have my children tripping over cat5 cable, I've got a cheap 802.11n USB device plugged in, which uses a Realtek 8192CU chip. The house wifi is protected with WPA2. Ubuntu's Network Manager detects the network, but connecting to it just times out and asks for the password again. I'm sure I'm using the correct password. No other computers on the house network are having any difficulty. This device previously worked correctly with both Windows 7 and OpenBSD in the same machine. The linux-firmware package is installed (from the disc) at version 1.79, and /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin is present. dmesg|grep rtl only shows the "loading firmware" message. I've tried Google, but I apparently can't find the right set of words to plug in, because I haven't found anything related (lots of "doesn't work at all," but nothing matching my circumstances). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Achieving more fluent movement

  I'm working on my first OpenGL 2D game and I've just locked the framerate of my game. However, the way objects move is far from satisfying: they tend to lag, which is shown in this video. I've thought how more fluent animation can be achieved and started getting segmentation faults due to accessing the same object by two different threads. I've tried the following threads' setting: Drawing, creating new objects Moving player, moving objects, deleting objects Currently my application uses this setting: Drawing, creating new objects, moving objects, deleting object Moving player Any ideas would be appreciated. EDIT: I've tried increasing the FPS limit but lags are noticeable even at 200 fps.

• Moving AI in a multiplayer game

  I've been programming a multiplayer game and its coming together very nicely. It uses both TCP and UDP (UDP for movement and TCP for just about everything else). What I was wondering was how I would go about sending multiple moving AI without much lag. At first I used TCP for everything and it was very slow when people moved. I'm currently using a butchered version of this http://corvstudios.com/tutorials/udpMultiplayer.php for my movement system and I'm wondering what the best method of sending AI movements is. By movements I mean the AI chooses left/right/up/down and the player can see this happening. Thanks.

I found a few sites like www.freightCenter.com that provide quotes using webservice. Two drawbacks, its paid service and the other, my site response time is slow if I use the webservice. • Connected to wifi, but quits loading pages after a random amount of time

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10, on a TOSHIBA Satellite L755 laptop, and using a Cradlepoint MBR-1000 wireless router. The wifi supposedly works fine on my sisters' and mom's laptops, and my dad uses a wired connection through the router. Nobody else has the problem. It shows that I'm connected and everything. The network manager GUI shows that everything is going just dandy... but it's not. I'll be able to load a page or two, then I have to disconnect, and reconnect to the router to get it to work again for a couple minutes. I noticed when I was downstairs, close to the router, this problem seemed to go away (at least, I was connected for a couple of hours without running into this problem). When I run ping -n 8.8.8.8 it shows this while the connection is still running fine 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=1187 ttl=47 time=665 ms and whe

• How to make a deb install only when the dependency is installed, or the conflicting packages aren't?

  I'm making a package for Cydia, but since it uses APT/dpkg, I thought I'd ask this question here. I want my package to only install if gsc.wildcat (represents an iPad) is installed, or if gsc.front-facing-camera (represents an iPhone 4/4S) is not installed. This setup would let the package only install on the 3GS or an iPad, but there's no package that represents a 3GS that I know of. It also requires iOS 5 (firmware (>= 5.0)). Here's an excerpt from my control file: Depends: gsc.wildcat, firmware (>= 5.0) Conflicts: gsc.front-facing-camera How can I do this with only Depends/Conflicts? (Please note that this question is about dpkg and not Cydia.)
