• Why do browsers have so many possible exploits?

  When browsing I am ocassionally given warnings about pages that host malware "that could damage my computer". I am seriously perplexed as to why, in 2010, browsers still have possible exploits and can be cracked. My question is "Why?". I'm assuming it's because of the quick development that occured in the browser wars which were unsufficiently tested, but I'm unsure. Surely WebKit would have patched all the issues in KHTML, or Gecko sorted out the flaws in Netscape's engine, and the IE coders sorted through their codebase to eliminate possible flaws? • System halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds

  I'm using Windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4250s. The problem I face is that my system halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds. These jerks are not letting me concentrate or work properly. This happens even when I'm just typing in notepad while no other application is running. I tried to install every driver from HP's website and there's no item in device manager marked with yellow icon. • Bash - Program is writing directly to terminal

  Valve's dedicated server for the Source Engine (srcds_run) on Linux writes directly to the terminal, not stdout. I want to run it as an /etc/init.d daemon on Debian 6, and I'd like to redirect/capture the output to a file. How can I do that? And better yet, why would they output directly to the terminal, is there any benefit in doing that? I suppose I could start another bash instance just for srcds_run, but that seems like a dirty solution, and I still don't know how to redirect the output.

• Dell Dimension 2400 problem

  I have a new problem with a Dell Dimension 2400 PC. Until yesterday or the day before, it was working fine, but today when I press the power button the light on the power button turns yellow instead of green, the fan behind the processor increases speed until it sounds like a jet engine, and the computer does not boot up. I cleaned out the dust in the computer so that is not the problem. Also, the fan was blowing cold air. Do any of you know what might be causing this and how I might be able to fix it?

  I installed windows live writer and configured it to connect to my xmlrpc enabled blog engine. After doing so, it threw an unrecoverable error and closed down.   Hello All, I want to ensure I have done all I can to configure a system's disks for serious database use. The three areas I know of (any others?) to be concerned about are: I/O size: the database engine and disk's native size should either match, or the database's native I/O size should be a multiple of the disk's native I/O size. Disks that are capable of Direct Memory Access (eg. IDE) should be configured for it. When a disk says it has written data persistently, it must be so! No keeping it in cache and lying about it. I have been looking for information on how to ensure these are so for CENTOS and Ubuntu, but can't seem to find anything at all! I want to be able to check these things and change them if needed. Any and all input appreciated.

  After reading up on SNMP and some of the questions help here I think understand the agent role as a SNMP service to device (Like SQL, it is an API to storage). When you execute a SQL query the SQL engine does all the work and returns the result - You don't need to be aware of how the storage and where the storage is done. But MIBs are not actual storage , so what is the role of my agent? if the agent only register the MIB like i follow in this tutorial, is it not used as handler at all? Say that I want monitor my application's pending request queue, so I want an agent that all SNMP request for application_pending_request will be fired for it and it will return the queue depth. Why do I need to have an actual MIB when all I need to poll my application queue in order to get result?

• Suddenly blocked from a site

  Suddenly from a time to now I haven't been able to go to a site I used to go frequently for maintenance (Wordpress). I tried different browsers, restarting my laptop, clearing cache, history, cookies. Also did a ping to the site ip, go 4 packets send and 4 lost. This is a problem I think with only my laptop, since I've been able to go into the site from other devices in the same network. I have also tried connecting to the same site from a completely different network with the same problem. I really don't know what to do about this, any advices? PS: site hosted in wp engine if that has anything to do with this problem.

• Move MySQL database while instance is online

  I have a MySQL instance containing a number of databases, one of which is an archive database (although using the INNODB rather than ARCHIVE storage engine) that is not queried or written to in normal operation. The data filesystem is filling up and I'd like to move the archive database's data directory to a different filesystem (and then symlink it back, obviously). If there are no SQL statements attempting to query or update the data during the move, can I safely do this while the MySQL instance and the other databases stay online and in use? I plan to rsync the database directory to the new filesystem, then rename the old one on the original filesystem to something different and create the new symlink. lsof reports that MySQL does have the .ibd files open, so presumably it would have to reopen them.

• Using SQL Server specific code in Access linked to SQL Server database

  Hi, I have an access file that is linked (through an ODBC connection) to a SQL Server 2008 database. I am trying to write some reports against this database. However, Access chokes when I write the select query of the report with SQL syntax specific to SQL Server that doesn't exist in access. Shouldn't this work, since it's the SQL Server engine running the queries and just sending the data back to Access to display? Is there any way to get this to work? Need this to work on any combination of Access 2007 and 2010, and SQL Server 2005 and 2008. Edit Note: I cannot create a SQL Server stored procedure or function, or otherwise modify the original (SQL Server) schema in any way.

• How can I limit CloudFront downloads

  I'm looking to use Amazon's CloudFront to host some content in the near future. Currently, I'm keeping it very simple and I'm just uploading my content to S3 and then making a distribution available via Cloudfront. However, because I have a limited budget, I'd like to be able to limit the number of downloads or the money spent on bandwidth. As far as I can see, I can't set any quotas or budgets like you can in Google's App Engine, so I'm looking for another way of doing this. Has anyone had any experience doing this? One approach I'm thinking of is having to place a webserver with redirects in between, but that kind of defeats the simplicity of CF for me.

• Prevent Firefox from going to first search result

  When I type some terms in the address bar (not the search box!) and hit enter, Firefox searches for those terms on Google, and, depending on some logic either takes me to the search results page or takes me to the first search result. Now, I want it to always take me to the search results page (like Chrome does). Is this possible? And, yes, I am aware that the search box does exactly that, but I'm using it for some other search engine. So, another solution would be to add additional search box, that can also work for me.

• Configure Iptables to allow a PHP-app accessing a port-nr

  I have a php-application which connects to another app called Solr (database search engine). I can via this php app add/remove documents (records) from the Solr index. However, the Solr security is low, and anybody with the right port nr can access Solr and remove documents (records). I wonder, is it possible to ONLY allow my own php-app to have access to Solr somehow? Prefferably via Iptables. I am thinking I can only allow my own servers IP to that port, and it would solve my problem, because PHP is a server-side code. But I am not sure. About the Php-app: The website is a classifieds website, and when users wants to add or remove classifieds, they do so through a php app, which is this one. The app has a function which connects to solr and updates the database (index). I appreciate detailed answers... Thanks

  In an Active Directory domain, if I configure a Windows service on a domain member computer to start with an AD user account (aka "ye olde service account",) and the then the service stays running but I don't restart the service or reboot the machine for a year... does the LastLogonTimestamp of the service account's user object continue to update? Edit: If you say "it depends on the service," then use MS SQL Server as an example. I set MSSQL Engine to run as contoso\sql-service. Then I leave it alone for a year.

  Ever since Google implemented their new look at the beginning of May, I have been having trouble with their search engine changing all of the spaces in my query to plus signs. This behavior occurs when I use the search box in both Firefox and Internet Explorer. I'm pretty sure the server is running (many of the other topics on this subject suggests that the services might not be running, so I kinda looked into it, but they do seem to be running). But when I try to access it through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio it doesn't seem to be able to find them. • MySQL keeps crashing OS server.. Please help adjust my.ini!

  I have MySQL 5.0 installed on a Windows 2008 machine (3GB RAM). My server crashes on a regular basis (almost once a day) with this error: Changed limits: max_open_files: 2048 max_connections: 800 table_cache: 619 I did not use the heavy InnoDB .ini file, although I am rethinking that I should have? I am worried that big configuration changes will make my current sites stop working. What should I do?   I need a database engine that can utilize multiple servers for processing a single SQL query in parallel. So far I know that this is possible with the some engines, though none of them are feasible for me either because of pricing or missing features. The engines currently known to me are: MS SQL (enterprise) DB2 (enterprise) Oracle (enterprise) GridSQL Greenplum Which other engines have this feature? • replacing 3 Cisco Catalyst 4500

  Our network supplier recommends replacing our 3 cisco catalyst 4500's because they are EOL and dont speak OSPF (which we really want) Its not my area of expertise so I cant say for sure if we really need to replace these units but for my company the estimated costs of 250K euro is a huge problem. • MySQL on a laptop for remote workers - MyISAM keeps corrupting

  We have an application that is used by remote, mobile workers. It intalls WAMP (Server2Go) on a laptop and uses MySQL to store data locally. All tables are MyISAM. Once a day, the workers sync the database to our central server via HTTP scripts that query the data and post it to our site. The problem is that many of these laptop database tables are corrupting continually. It appears that MySQL acts like it saves the information (I don't get any query errors), but the table gets corrupt. I have to repair the table constantly (which removes several rows of data in the process). Does anyone have any ideas about how to work around this problem? Would it be wise to switch to InnoDB on the laptops? How about a different database system altogether. I have looked at MySQL Embedded, but it appears to be the same engine as the regular MySQL.

• Screen tearing with GeForce 550 Ti

  Recently I switched to the new monitor and graphic card - DELL U2312HM and GeForce GTX 550 Ti. I have problems with screen tearing (like in this picture from Wikipedia). Usually it is somewhere in upper part of the screen. Mainly happens in videos (in flash videos tearing heavier). In games all fine, except in-game videos (sometimes even videos built on game engine), but gameplay itself is clear, even in very fast actions. Connection with DVI. Problems both in Linux (Debian GNU/Linux, openSUSE 12.1, Linux Mint 13) and Windows (Windows XP, Windows 7), with various driver versions. 1920x1080, 60Mhz. How can I resolve this?

• Mod_rewrite pretty url when domain/foo is a directory

  Starting with something as simple as: RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?page=$1 What if I also want the following to work: RewriteRule ^/foo$ /index.php?page=foo #/foo IS a directory This seem to work ONLY if the R flag is set, but then the full non-pretty url is written. Thus it seems I can REDIRECT existing directory, but not rewrite them... Maybe with an .htaccess inside the directory itself? Or some PHP magic in /foo/index.php like header(/index.php?page=foo)? Will it work? Will it be HTTP standard/search engine optimized? Please help! PS: The oddest idea occurred to me: redirecting /foo to /not-a-dir, and then rewriting /not-a-dir to /index.php?p=foo should theorically work... But... Come on... Really?!?
