    Consider the following client request “Please create a report for us to list expenses”. Which Oracle EBS tool would you choose? There are plenty of options available: Oracle Reports, or BI Publisher with PDF or Excel layout, or Discoverer, or BI Publisher Stand Alone, or PDF online generation, or Oracle WebADI, or Plain SQL*Plus as Concurrent Program, or Online review option … Assuming, you as development lead have to decide, you may decide by available skill set in your development team. However, is this a good decision? An important question to influence the decision is the “Why” question: why do you need this report, what process is behind, what exactly you like to achieve? We see often data created or printed, although it would be much better to get the data in Excel, and upload changes via WebADI directly. There are more points that should drive your decision: How many of such requirements you have got? Has this technique been used in the project already? Are there related reusable’s you may gain from? How difficult is it to maintain your solution? Can you merge this report with another one, to reduce test and maintenance work? In addition, also your own development standards should guide you a bit to come to a good decision. In one of my own projects, we discussed such topics in our weekly team meeting. By utilizing the team knowledge best, you may come to a better decision, and additionally, your team supports your decision. Unfortunately, I have rarely seen dedicated team trainings or planned knowledge transfer to support such processes. Often the pressure to deliver on time is too high to have discussion and decision time left. But exactly this can help keeping maintenance costs low by limiting the number of alternative solutions for similar requirements. Lastly, design decisions should be documented to allow another person taking this over easily. Decisions shall be reviewed and updated regularly, to reflect related procedures or Oracle products respective product versions. Summary: Oracle EBS offers plenty of alternatives to implement customizations. Create and maintain a decision tree to support the design process. Do not leave the decision just on developer side. Limit the number of alternative solutions as best as possible; choose one which is the most appropriate also from future maintenance perspective.

  • PASS: FY10 Actuals Posted

    Earlier this year we published preliminary fiscal year 2010 financials to the Governance page on the PASS web site.  Please remember that FY10 runs from July 1st, 2009 through June 30th, 2010 and includes the November 2009 Summit.  We do our fiscal year this way so that the Summit falls earlier in the fiscal year.  The financials we had posted were P&L numbers at the portfolio level.  Prior to this we had posted our detailed budget but only posted the auditors report at the end of each year.  Today we updated our published financials to include: Pre-audit actuals from FY10 at the same level as our budget.  The document has both actuals and budget for FY10 side by side.  This is over 20 pages of detailed financial information covering hundreds of line-items. A letter describing key differences between our budget and actuals.  I walked through each line item where the difference was greater than $25,000 and explained what happened and why. We updated the financial graph going back to 2003 to include FY10. This update should “close the loop” on our financials.  You can now start with the published budget and compare it to the finished financials at the same level of detail.  We also plan to publish the auditor’s report when that is completed -- as we do every year. Overall I’m very happy with how FY10 turned out.  Keep in mind that this was the November 2009 Summit so we were still facing economic challenges.  With all that we were roughly break-even showing a $15,000 profit on $3.9 million of revenue.  I didn’t find anything shocking in reviewing our actual vs. budget but there were a few things that needed explanation.  You can see those in the letter on the governance page. Please keep in mind that these are the actuals from our operating financials.  The auditor may have us make adjustments for depreciation or other financial transactions.  We may also account for certain transactions differently for tax purposes than we do for financial reporting purposes.  I feel these financial statements give you the clearest picture of how our organization spends its money. We were late publishing these this year.  We were working through some tax issues and that delayed our ability to file our final tax forms which delayed this process.  In hindsight I should have published these documents as soon as we had them and not waited for the tax issues.  We’ll do this better in the future.   • Taking a Projects Development to the Next Level

    I have been looking for some advice for a while on how to handle a project I am working on, but to no avail. I am pretty much on my fourth iteration of improving an "application" I am working on; the first two times were in Excel, the third Time in Access, and now in Visual Studio. The field is manufacturing. The basic idea is I am taking read-only data from a massive Sybase server, filtering it and creating much smaller tables in Access daily (using delete and append Queries) and then doing a bunch of stuff. More specifically, I use a series of queries to either combine data from multiple tables or group data in specific ways (aggregate functions), and then I place this data into a table (so I can sort and manipulate data using DAO.recordset and run multiple custom algorithms). This process is then repeated multiple times throughout the database until a set of relevant tables are created. Many times I will create a field in a query with a value such as 1.1 so that when I append it to a table I can store information in the field from the algorithms. So as the process continues the number of fields for the tables change. The overall application consists of 4 "back-end" databases linked together on a shared drive, with various output (either front-end access applications or Excel). So my question is is this how many data driven applications that solve problems essentially work? Each backend database is updated with fresh data daily and updating each takes around 10 seconds (for three) and 2 minutes(for 1). Project Objectives. I want/am moving to SQL Server soon. Front End will be a Web Application (I know basic web-development and like the administration flexibility) and visual-studio will be IDE with c#/.NET. Should these algorithms be run "inside the database," or using a series of C# functions on each server request. I know you're not supposed to store data in a database unless it is an actual data point, and in Access I have many columns that just hold calculations from algorithms in vba. The truth is, I have seen multiple professional Access applications, and have never seen one that has the complexity or does even close to what mine does (for better or worse). But I know some professional software applications are 1000 times better then mine. So Please Please Please give me a suggestion of some sort. I have been completely on my own and need some guidance on how to approach this project the right way.

    I'm going on vacation to Paris, France for 10 days. Actually, it's my girlfriend's wish to go there but I'm not very interested in visiting, sightseeing, etc. Recently, I came up with an idea of trying to do something like programming tourism. :) I'd like to do something related to programming in a startup-like company. I do not want a salary or any kind of compensation. I want to overview process, social aspects, environment and "what it feels like" to development software in another country. I'm from Russia. I've been a software developer since 2003. I prefer C#4 but I'm ready to use anything Turing-complete. I have some MS certifications and am familiar with all .NETs since 1.1. Currently I'm finishing PhD in CS. I'm interested in multidimensional indexing and I can turn any piece of data and code to OLAP system. :) But it'd take too much time. What can I do? I have no more than one week. I want a totally complete project in a short amount of time. Implement some features in well-tested project Do a code review Debug memory, performance and concurrency issues Do unit testing So, about the questions: Is it legal? I'm ready to sign NDA if it's necessary. I'll have tourist visa. Is it possible? I'm really sure that bureaucratic companies with lots of HRs and PMs will not allow such experiments. But small companies can afford it. I'm ready to guarantee support on my code after leaving home :) P.S. I still havn't started learning French :) I hope it will not take too much time :) P.P.S. Yes, it's girlfriend-approved. What's in it for me? It's fun. It's fun to see new systems and people who created them. It's fun to complete meaningful things. Quickly. What's in it for them? Feature, debug, review or test. If my short-term colleagues will like this style of working I can invite them to make same trip into my company :) I think in Russia it's even more exciting :)

    I have a Windows 2003 R2 machine that is giving an Event ID 8197 about once an hour and ten minutes. The full error is attached below. The machine is primary used to host IIS webpages and SMTP. There is no known scheduled tasks on the machine. I have read a lot of Google Search and Microsoft docs, but none of the suggestions found there have any impact. What I am curious is if there is any way to convert the SRMVOLMC81 and SRMVOLMC57 into mount point data so I could at least know where the error is sourcing from (there are no related errors in the logs, just the 8197 every hour and ten).     Hi, I have backupassist and I attempt to run a backup, with VSS service running. However, I get this error in Windows Event Log: The backup operation that started at '?2010?-?04?-?30T01:51:15.601000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved. Code: 521. The error in backupassist is: The backup operation stopped before completing. Detailed error: ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x80042336) The writer experienced a partial failure. Check the component level error state for more information.   • Problem with Email Notifications in VisualSVN Server

    Hey guys! I have a dedicated server running windows 2003 server and Visual SVN Server 2.0.8. I'm trying to configure it to send email notifications on commit. So I found this article on Visual SVN site. It says I have to edit the Post-commit hook and set it to the following: "%VISUALSVN_SERVER%\bin\VisualSVNServerHooks.exe" ^ commit-notification "%1" -r %2 ^ --from <from-email> --to <to-email> ^ --smtp-server <smtp-server> Of course I've replaced the variables there. The problem is when someone commits something, the svn client throws the following error: post-commit hook failed (exit code 1) with no output. The commit process runs with no problems, I mean it does commit the files. But it won't send any email notification. If I remove the post-commit hook, then I don't get the error (and of course I don't get any notification). Could you help me out with it? The error doesn't tell too much =S Thank you!

My assumption is that the ASA is using PAP authentication, instead of MS-CHAP v2; the credentials are confirmed, the proper Remote Access Policy is being used, but this policy is set to only allow MS-CHAP2. What do we need to do on the ASA to make it us MS-CHAP v2? In the ADSM GUI The "Microsoft CHAP v2 compatible" tickbox is enabled, but I don't know what this corresponds to in the config.

Here are the specific steps that were followed: Open Administrative Tools - Computer Management: Under Computer Management (Local) Expand Services and Applications, right click WMI Control and select properties. In the Security tab, expand Root, highlight CIMV2, click Security (near bottom of window); add Performance Monitor Users and enable the options : Enable Account and Remote Enable. ­Open Administrative Tools - Component Services: Under Console Root go to Component Services- Computers - Right click My Computer and select properties, select the COM security tab, in “Access Permissions” click "Edit Default" select(or add then select) “Performance Monitor Users” group and allow local access and remote access and click ok.   • Windows Server Backup - Recover only shows the latest backup

    We're having quite some trouble at work using Windows Server Backup. We have a HyperV server (Win 2008) running 8 virtual web servers, these are running a variety of OS'es: Win 2003, Win 2008 and a lone Debian. Each virtual server has a separate partition on the physical HyperV server, so e.g. E: is virtual server #1, F: is #2 and so forth. For backup we use Windows Server Backup, or more exactly we use the commandline tool: wbadmin.exe We need to make the backups without stopping the virtual servers, as we cannot afford the downtime (we've got users online both day and night), and Windows Server Backup offers to use the shadow copy provider to archive this. We run wbadmin like this: wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:\\remotebackuplocation\somefolder -include:E: -quiet We run it once per partition, because we've got a script wrapped around that command, for sending us an email about how it went. Each time we run wbadmin it'll delete the Backup xxxx folder it created in last backup, and just create a new. In order to prevent this from happening, we rename the backup xxx folder after each backup is run, before starting the next one. I realize we must rename it back to its original name prior to recovering, and we obviously do this. Now the issue is as follows: Even though we have all the backed up files, and rename whichever backup we want to use, to its original name, we can only see the latest backup in the Windows Server Backup GUI when we select "Recover". This means we can only recover the last partition we backup up, so e.g. E: can never be recovered. In other words we're screwed :-( My question is: Does anyone know how to use Windows Server Backup for a scenario like this ? Or is it simply not possible due to the simplicity of Windows Server Backup ? If it's not possible, could you recommend some backup software for this purpose ? We've already looked at MS' System Center Data Protection Manager, however it's quite expensive and the boss doesn't like that :-/

  • Failed Backup Job With Backup Exec 12 and AOFO

    I am backing up a Windows 2003 Small Business Server with SP2. We are running Backup Exec 12 with SP4. Recently the backup job started failing on backing up the system state with the following error: V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "System?State". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Snapshot provider error (0xE000FE7D): Access is denied. To back up or restore System State, administrator privileges are required. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details. Upon review of Symantec's website the error indicates a credential problem. However when I test the credentials they come back with no failures. I have found another forum here referencing a similar error and have tried what has been indicated with no succesful results. I have created new jobs based on new selection lists with no succesful results. I suspect a new update possibly from Microsoft may be causing this but I have no idea which one. I am looking for feedback. Thanks.

  • SQL Server 2008 Restore from Backup fails with error 3241 'cannot process this media family'

    I am attempting to backup a database from a SQL Server instance on one machine and restore it to another, and I am encountering the frequently discovered 'SQL Server cannot process this media family' error. Each of my instances are SQL Server 2008, but with different patch levels Restore: 10.0.2531.0 Backup: 10.0.1600.22 ((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414 ) The restore DB is express. Not sure about the backup version. The backup version is on a virtual private server. The restore is on my development box. When I restore to a different database on the source (backup) server, it restores fine. Lots of stuff on google about this issue, some on stackoverflow about this issue, but nothing which is this exact situation. Any thoughts? It should be straightforward to do a backup and restore from one machine to another (having done this thousands of times in with SQL 6.5,7,2000,2005). Any ideas how to restore a database in this situation, which gives this error when attempting to restore? PARTIAL RESOLUTION: When I restored to a different box, running SQL 2008 Express on Windows Server 2003, all worked well. It just wouldn't work on the Windows 7 box. Not sure why. If anyone else has a similar experience, please let me know (there are many similar issues in different forums out there).

  • Word 2007 crashes on Server 2008 R2 terminal services

    We are finding that Word 2007 (with SP2) crashes when used on a Windows 2008 R2 terminal server. Typically it crashes when you click File/Open or File/Save, but not every time. Maybe one time in four, and just to be really confusing, on a test server in my office I can't make it crash. I have just today set up a brand new shiny 2k8 R2 terminal server with as simple a setup as possible, e.g. no anti-virus to confuse things, and we're still seeing crashes. My question is has anyone else seen this, and if so any clues on what's happening? We have a support case open with Microsoft, and the MS support engineer has conceded it's happening, but has so far been unable to find the reason. On possible factor is that all the 2k8 R2 terminal servers I've seen this on have been Hyper-V VMs (running on a 2k8 R2 host). I'm about to put in a physical 2k8 R2 terminal server at the customer where we're seeing the most crashes, in case this is relevant. More news soon. Sorry if this posting seems a bit vague, but this has just bitten us and is causing a lot of pain and sleepless nights :-( If anyone can help I'll be enormously grateful! Update: we've given up and gone back to 2008 pre-R2. Both Office 2003 and 2007 both work fine now. I think there are some problems with TS in R2. Googling doesn't find much, so I thought it was just me. It's reassuring to find that someone else has seen the same problem.
