• Should iOS games use a Timer?

  No matter what frameworks we use -- Core Graphics, Cocos2D, OpenGL ES -- to write games, should a timer be used (for games that has animation even when a user doesn't do any input, such as after firing a missile and waiting to see if the UFO is hit)? I read that NSTimer might not get fired until after scheduled time (interval), and CADisplayLink can delay and get fired at a later time as well, only that it tells you how late it is so you can move the object more, so it can make the object look like it skipped frame. Must we use a Timer? And if so, what is the best one to use?

  I am new to the cross platform application development. I came across the very similar cross platform frameworks AppMobi and PhoneGaP. I found the basic difference between appmobi and phonegap is appMobi offers a complete cloud-based development system that includes a the XDK development tool. ie It's possible to develop Apple apps without owning a Mac using appMobi. I want to know Is there any differences between apk/ipa created using Appmobi and apk/ipa created using PhoneGap? Is there any difference in native features that can be used ? Also other differences between these two.

• Should I use a unit testing framework to validate XML documents?

  From http://www.w3.org/XML/Schema: [XML Schemas] provide a means for defining the structure, content and semantics of XML documents. I'm using an XML Schema (XSD) to validate several large XML documents. While I'm finding plenty of support within XSD for checking the structure of my documents, there are no procedural if/else features that allow me to say, for instance, If Country is USA, then Zipcode cannot be empty. I'm comfortable using unit testing frameworks, and could quite happily use a framework to test content integrity. Am I asking for trouble doing it this way, rather than an alternative approach? Has anybody tried this with good / bad results? -- Edit: I didn't include this information to keep it technology agnostic, but I would be using C# / Linq / xUnit for deserialization / testing.

• What is the point in using real time?

  I understand that using real time frame elapses (which should vary between 16-17ms on average) are provided by a lot of frameworks. GetTimeElapsedSinceLastFrame, and it gives you the wall clock time. But should we use this information in basic physics simulation? It looks to me to be a bad idea. Say there is a slight lag on the machine, for whatever reason (say a virus scanner starts up). The calculations all jump, and there is no need for this. Why not use a virtual second and ignore wall clock time? For gameplay on the level of Commander Keen, shouldn't you always use the virtual second and not real-time? (Besides stopwatch timing for race games) I don't see a need to use real time and not a fixed 16ms time step.

I'm right now so familiar with C++, VB.NET and PHP, but to jump to a higher level I must choose between JEE(JSP, Servlets, JSF, Spring, EJB, Struts, Hibernate,...) and .NET(ASP.NET, C#). Because I cant learn them at the same time. And you realize that, when I mentioned JEE a lot of things comes to the head. In my personnal experience I prefere the .NET, but Java seems to be a better choice. believe me, i'm not writing a subjective topic. I just want to know what must I follow to get succes in my life. The question here is : Is there any things that can be done with Java, and cannot be done with .NET.   I'm using the following code to move a UIImageView: shootImg.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"Projectile Left 1.png"]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; shootImg.center = CGPointMake(shootImg.center.x+1000, shootImg.center.y); [UIView commitAnimations]; This works but what I want to do is after [UIView CommitAnimations]; I want to set the location of shootImg using CGPointMake. If I just put it after commitAnimations then the animation doesn't fully complete. Any suggestions? I'm not using any frameworks like cocos2d and if you need to see any more code just ask.

• Where must i focus [on hold]

  i have been working in technology field for last 7 years. i started with vb.net windows application along with oracle plsql. Later on i did projects that included coding in java ,struts framework ,javascripts. I have lost interest in doing projects with struts framework and doesn't find oracle plsql appealing too. I would love to work with new technologies especially mobile techs and my interests in coding persists still. But i am not sure if my organisation will ever shift its tech base to new and modern frameworks. Now i am 25 years old and worried about taking the right decision. i feel like quitting the job but at the same time i am concerned if i have the sufficient tech skills to start working on modern technologies in other organisations. Also i am confused if i must stick to the same company and wait for management jobs. Kindly suggest your opinions on the right strategy i must opt , being a 25 year old with this background.

I'm able to mount and view the digital media folders, but I'm looking for behavior more like the Mac/Windows iExplorer app that will list the /var folder as well as Applications, etc rather than just making it look like an external filesystem.   I exported a virtual machine from my work station, and I am trying to renew the ip-address at home. I put one copy on my laptop and one copy on my PC. I've done this sudo rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and changed the MAC address, but they keep coming back as 192.168.1.165. I need them to be different because I need to run two of these exports at the same time, so I cannot afford to have the same IP. What can I do? Thanks.

  I'm quite new to the Java Swing programming, and GUI development as well. As a beginner, I'm currently reading Design Pattern, but finding what I'm looking for is quite hard, most of the times. So far, I've never had huge problems defining a view hierarchy - I just use to subclass component from component. But the hard-to-do here is how managing callbacks, which often become hard to maintain due to the hard code. During my last projects, I tried to separate GUI, Listener and Callbacker objects which cooperated together, but in this way it was really hard adding new features. So, which kind of best patterns or best practices do you tend to use when trying to maintain, add new features or even worst avoid to hard-code classes which manage callbacks method in this kind of frameworks (mainly Java Swing)?

  I am about to graduate, and I am already working as a web developer in our library IT department. When I look at job postings I am absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer variety of technologies out there. Some companies care about math + algorithms + data structures. Some care about experiences in technology stack XYZ. SQL, css, html, frameworks, javascript, design patterns etc.. etc... etc... At some point I realized I just need to start at mastering a foundation to become employable at a better place and go from there. But the skill-set to get me in the doors varies and I just don't have time to learn everything. How do you deal with this issue? What is the essential stack to become employable? Say in php or ror arena. Perhaps a smarter move would be to move to a technology stack with less variety like .net?
