  Take a simple table like below: Column Headings: || Agent's Name || Time Logged In || Center || Row 1: Andrew || 12:30 PM || Home Base Row 2: Jeff || 7:00 AM || Virtual Base Row 3: Ryan || 6:30 PM || Test Base Now lets say that a single cell is deleted so the table now looks like this: Column Headings: || Agent's Name || Time Logged In || Center || Row 1: Andrew || 12:30 PM || Row 2: Jeff || 7:00 AM || Virtual Base Row 3: Ryan || 6:30 PM || Test Base Notice that "Home Base" is missing. Now in excel you can delete the cell and shift the rest so the finished product looks like below: Column Headings: || Agent's Name || Time Logged In || Center || Row 1: Andrew || 12:30 PM || Virtual Base Row 2: Jeff || 7:00 AM || Test Base Row 3: Ryan || 6:30 PM || And you can see we are left with a blank cell last row. How do I code this procedure of shifting the cells up in SQL? I've been struggling on this problem for weeks! Thank you!

• Msg 64, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 SQL Server Error

  I am running a sproc on an SQL Server 2005 server which is resulting in the following error: Msg 64, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) Once the error occurs I loose my connection to the server, but able to reconnect. There is nothing in the Event logs. The database is still functional and running its website fine. EDIT: This occurs every time I run this sproc, or it's called by an application. Any suggestions on what may be causing this error?

• SQL Reporting Services - Subreports Broken into multiple columns

  Hi, I inherited an SQL Reporting Services .rdl project from somebody and need help fixing some functionality. In each row of the report, there is a subreport. In order to save space the subreport is divided into 3. Such that in each row of the report, it splits the data of the subreport into 3 smaller tables. Right now, it fills these 3 subreports horizontally. (ie. if the result has 9 values, the first subtable will have 1, 4 & 7, the second subtable will have 2, 5 & 8, etc) Is there a way to have it fill the subtables vertically? (ie. the first subtable would have 1,2 & 3) Thanks!

• Slow Update/insert into SQL Server CE using LinqToDatasets

  I have a mobile app that is using LinqToDatasets to update/insert into a SQL Server CE 3.5 File. My Code looks like this: // All the MyClass Updates MyTableAdapter myTableAdapter = new MyTableAdapter(); foreach (MyClassToInsert myClass in updates.MyClassChanges) { // Update the row if it is already there int result = myTableAdapter.Update(myClass.FirstColumn, myClass.SecondColumn, myClass.FirstColumn); // If the row was not there then insert it. if (result == 0) { myTableAdapter.Insert(myClass.FirstColumn, myClass.SecondColumn); } } This code is used to keep the hand held database in sync with the server database. Problem is if it is a full update (first time for example) there are a lot of updates (about 125). That makes this code (and more loops like it take a very long time (I have three such loops that take over 30 seconds each). Is there a faster or better way to do updates/inserts like this? (I did see this Codeplex Project, but I could not see how to make it work with both updates and inserts.)

  All, We are using SQL Server 2008 with Collation Setting as 'SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS'. We are using Varchar column to store textual data. We know that we cannot store Double Byte data in Varchar column and hence cannot support languages like Japanese and Chinese without converting it to NVarchar. However, will it be safe to say that all Single Byte Characters can be stored in Varchar column without any problem? If yes then from where can I get the list of languages which needs Single Byte for storage and the list of languages which needs double byte? Any assistance in this regard is highly appreciated.   Does any one know how I would have to change the following to work with ms sql? WHERE registrationDate between to_date ('2003/01/01', 'yyyy/mm/dd') AND to_date ('2003/12/31', 'yyyy/mm/dd'); What I have read implies I would have to construct it using DATEPART() which could become very long winded. Especially when the goal would be to compare on dates which I receive in the following format "2003-12-30 10:07:42". It would be nice to pass them off to the database as is. Any pointers appreciated.

  Hi all, I am building an asp.net application, using II6 on windows server 2003 (vps hosting). I am confronted with an error I didn't receive on my development machine (windows 7, iis 7.5, 64 bit). When my wcf service tries launching my query running against a local sql server this is the error I receive: Memory gates checking failed because the free memory (43732992 bytes) is less than 5% of total memory. As a result, the service will not be available for incoming requests. To resolve this, either reduce the load on the machine or adjust the value of minFreeMemoryPercentageToActivateService on the serviceHostingEnvironment config element. and ideas??

  Hi, I have a Microsoft Notepad flate file with data and Vertical Bar as column delimiter. I get following message: cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types It seems it is my nvarchar(max) that creates my problem. I changed to varchar(max); but still the same problem. And in the SQL Server 2005 import and export wizard the flate file source advanced tab the OutputColumnWith is 50. Will that say my flate file column is max 50? I hope not because my column is more then 50... Thank you, Rune

• Rails - MS-SQL Server problems (unixODBC, FreeTDS) on Mac 10.6

  Followed the instructions on the Rails wiki and have had success connecting to SQL Server 2000 with TSQL -- both with DSN-less and DNS connections. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.3. Wiki instructions here. Installed ruby-odbc, dbi (0.4.0), dbd-odbc (2.4.5), activerecord-sqlserver-adapter (2.3.5). In my database.yml (Rails 2.3.6): development: adapter: sqlserver mode: ODBC dsn: 'DRIVER=/usr/local/lib/libtdsodbc.so;TDS_Version=8.0;SERVER=mssql01.discountasp.net;DATABASE=DB_164368_dmusd;Port=1433;uid=DB_164368_dmusd_user;pwd=Schools77;' This yields the following error: ODBC::Error: S1090 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Invalid string or buffer length When I attempt to use a DSN connection, I get the following error: ODBC::Error: IM002 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified I have in fact verified that the FreeTDS driver (libtdsodbc.so) is installed and the path correct.   I know MS T-SQL does not support regular expression, but I need similar functionality. Here's what I'm trying to do: I have a varchar table field which stores a breadcrumb, like this: /ID1:Category1/ID2:Category2/ID3:Category3/ Each Category name is preceded by its Category ID, separated by a colon. I'd like to select and display these breadcrumbs but I want to remove the Category IDs and colons, like this: /Category1/Category2/Category3/ Everything between the leading slash (/) up to and including the colon (:) should be stripped out. I don't have the option of extracting the data, manipulating it externally, and re-inserting back into the table; so I'm trying to accomplish this in a SELECT statement. I also can't resort to using a cursor to loop through each row and clean each field with a nested loop, due to the number of rows returned in the SELECT. Can this be done? Thanks all - Jay

• SQL Server Full-Text Search: Hung processes with MSSEARCH wait type

  We have a SQL Server 2005 SP2 machine running a large number of databases, all of which contain full-text catalogs. Whenever we try to drop one of these databases or rebuild a full-text index, the drop or rebuild process hangs indefinitely with a MSSEARCH wait type. The process can’t be killed, and a server reboot is required to get things running again. Based on a Microsoft forums post[1], it appears that the problem might be an improperly removed full-text catalog. Can anyone recommend a way to determine which catalog is causing the problem, without having to remove all of them? So I discovered that there still existed an old catalogue, which I ,after and only after re-enabling full text search, were able to delete, since then my backup has worked”

If the connection is successful, I can verify that ServerConnection.ConnectTimeout is set to 2 (seconds), but when I supply a bogus name for the SQL Server instance, it still attempts to connect to it for ~ 15 seconds (which is I believe the default timeout value).   I have a recursive query that returns an error when I run it; in other databases (with more data) I have not the problem. In my case this query returns 2 colums (ID_PARENT and ID_CHILD) doing a recursion because my tree can have more than one level, bit I wanna have only "direct" parent. NOTE: I tried to put OPTION (MAXRECURSION 0) at the end of the query, but with no luck. The following query is only a part of the entire query, I tried to put OPTION only at the end of the "big query" having a continous running query, but no errors displayed. I have one textbox to search for them on a webpage. My question: Whats a good design strategy for queries where the user could be searching for various combinations of names including last names that have spaces e.g. "Smith James Jr." . Our customers store Jr. sometimes in suffix and sometimes just tack it to lastname. Sometimes Smith James Jr could be the entire last name.

However as I work my way through implementing Schema Collections, I find it very difficult to maintain them. Schema Collection DDL allows only CREATE and ALTER/ADD nodes to existing schemes. CREATE XML SCHEMA COLLECTION [ <relational_schema>. ]sql_identifier AS 'XSD Content' ALTER XML SCHEMA COLLECTION [ <relational_schema>. ]sql_identifier ADD 'Schema Component' When you want to remove any node from a schema you have to issue following DDL's. If that schema collection assigned to a table column, you have to alter table to remove schema collection association from that column Drop the schema collection object Re-Create schema collection Alter table column to re-associate schema collection to that column. This is pain when it comes to 100+ of schemes in a collection. Also you have to re-create XML indexes all over again, if any. Any solutions, suggestions, tricks to make this schema collection object editing process easier?

• Django-pyodbc SQL Server/freetds server connection problems on linux

  Error: ('IM002', '[IM002] [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified (0) (SQLDriverConnectW)') I'm migrating from developing on a windows development machine to Linux machine in production and I'm having issues with the freetds driver. As far as I can tell that error message means it can't find the driver. I can connect via the cli via sqsh and tsql. I've setup my settings.py as such. • SQL server query not showing daily date result

  I have a simple user production report where daily quotas are tracked. The sql returns a weeks worth of data for all users and for each day it tracks their totals. The problem is if they are out for a day and have a zero production for that day then the result query just skips that day and leaves it out. I want to return days even if the table has no entries for the person on that day. table: user date andy 3/22/10 andy 3/22/10 andy 3/23/10 andy 3/24/10 andy 3/26/10 result: andy 3/22/10 2 3/23/10 1 3/24/10 1 3/25/10 0 3/26/10 1 So my question is how do I get the query to return that 3/25/10 date with a count of 0.   Hello, I have a question regarding a CONTAINSTABLE function. I would like to find everything that ENDS WITH the search string. I can use the * to find everything that starts with the searchvalue, but I want an equivalent for the % sign in the SQL LIKE function. What I want: find everything that ends with 123, so as searchvalue, I could use "*123" in my CONTAINSTABLE function. But that doesn't work.. If I want all results starting with 123, I use "123*", and that works well. But what's the equivalent for -- LIKE %123 ?? it isn't "*123" in the CONTAINSTABLE function. What is it then? Thanks!

• SQL Server Reporting Services - Fast TimeDataRetrieval - Long TimeProcessing

  An application that I support has recently begun experiencing extended periods of time required to execute a report in SQL Server Reporting Services. The reports that are being executed are not terribly complex. There are multiple stored procedures (between 5 and 8) which return anywhere from a handful to 8000 records total. Reports are generally from 2 to 100 pages. One can argue (and I have) the benefit of a 100 page report, but the client is footing the bill. At any rate, the problem is that even the reports with 500 records (11 pages) being returned takes 5 minutes to return to the browser. In the execution log the TimeDataRetrieval is 60 seconds, but the TimeProcessing is 235 seconds. It seems bizarre to me that my query runs so quickly, but it takes Reporting Services so long to process the data. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Bernie
