  hi, im trying to replace our current journal (excel sheet) with a web portal based journal. something kind of like twitter, but with more options. also needs to have a login so we can track the people entering. it can also be some sort of tool but i cant find anything that meets our demands... i could use a ITIL ticket service but that has way to much functionalities for our use. im basicly looking for a webportal with a shared blog, where users can login and creat new entries with: a topic name a automated follow-up ID number a field where they can enter specific info a reply field and a status field with pre defined statuses can anyone help me with this? thanks in advance. • Can I set up a 2nd home wireless router, with router2 connecting to the internet through a desktop which is wirelessly connected to router1?

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • Mod_rewrite not working on ISPConfig 3 Server

  Problem I recently migrated a Drupal site from a shared hosting server to my own VM. Everything appears to work correctly, except clean urls. My VM Setup Ubuntu 10.04 LAMP ISPConfig 3 What I've tried From reading up on a number of drupal forums I've tried the following in this order Check that mod_rewrite is installed and enabled Changed PHP from FastCGI to Mod_PHP (prefer to use FastCGI or suPHP though to avoid having tmp/files folders with 777 permissions) Changed the Redirect type to L in ISPConfig Sites-domain.com-Redirect Changed /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All ... </Directory> Not sure about points 3 and 4, I do want all domains to be able to use mod_rewrite out of the box. Question Have I done something wrong or am I missing a step? Ultimately I would like to use FastCGI and clean urls working on all ISPConfig 3 domains without having to make any changes to individual domain settings. Any ideas appreciated, I'll try them all.

• Techniques for Visualizing Data

  I'm looking into providing several methods of visualizing a large volume of data. This may include, but will not be limited to, simple graphing. The techniques I'm exploring will involve shapes, text and lines. It will also involve interaction with elements (hiding, focusing, etc.) and animation (shifting, dragging, systematic reorganizing, etc.) of those elements. SVG or Canvas seem like the obvious choices (in conjunction with a JS library--probably jQuery), but the lack of cross-browser availability is a concern. I'd prefer to avoid Flash/Flex, but right now it's the only rock solid, cross-browser technology I've found if support for IE7/8 is a requirement. Does anyone have any other suggestions or any additional information that would make a technology I've listed seem even more appealing? Thanks.

• Routing different domains on a VPS

  We just went from shared hosting to a VPS server. We have several domain names that we have pointing to our dns, but they all point to the root of the server. What I would like now is a setup where every domain name gets its own map so we can run different sites on the VPS server. Like: www.example.com points to: /var/www/example.com www.imapwnu.com points to: /var/www/imapwnu.com First of all, is this possible? Second, I have root SSH access and Webmin, on a LAMP server running on Ubuntu. Webmin doesnt have Bind9 (I dont know if I need that, some forums pointed me towards something called bind). • Efficiency of while(true) ServerSocket Listen

  I am wondering if a typical while(true) ServerSocket listen loop takes an entire core to wait and accept a client connection (Even when implementing runnable and using Thread .start()) I am implementing a type of distributed computing cluster and each computer needs every core it has for computation. A Master node needs to communicate with these computers (invoking static methods that modify the algorithm's functioning). The reason I need to use sockets is due to the cross platform / cross language capabilities. In some cases, PHP will be invoking these java static methods. I used a java profiler (YourKit) and I can see my running ServerSocket listen thread and it never sleeps and it's always running. Is there a better approach to do what I want? Or, will the performance hit be negligible? Please, feel free to offer any suggestion if you can think of a better way (I've tried RMI, but it isn't supported cross-language. Thanks everyone

  Hi, I want to create and sell book / cartoons by individual episodes. What's the best way to to this? iBook from the apple store tends to sell by entire volume / book... I see an App from Marvel sells its contents by individual episodes, but I don't want to create / maintain shopping carts and stuff. (I am assuming iPad / iPhone users are downloading each cartoon episodes by their Marvel servers) I want to utilize Apple iBook / iTune store... • Installed over 4G RAM on 32-bit OS? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: 32-bit Windows Server address > 4GB RAM - How? I know that for 32-bit OS, the addressable memory space for each process is "4G" (maybe just 3G in user space...). If I have a 8G RAM, is it correct that all of the processes can still utilize (shared) these 8G memory but each of them are limited to a maximum 4G? Or the whole system only can see and utilize 4G out of 8G and thus having 8G RAM on a 32-bit OS is the same as having 4G RAM on it?

• My windows xp wireless hotspot wifi isn't working

  I add the hotspot the regular way. Yet it doesn't show up as available when I try to connect to it using my other Ubuntu laptop. And nothing can connect to it. Yesterday, I successfully made it work for 5 minutes and then it stopped without me changing any configuration. I've already tryed resetting the DNS. Edit: I've updated my Broadcom 802.11b/g driver to a generic but more recent version. I've also repaired the WMI, now the advanced tab of my primary connection is available and the hand meaning the connection is shared appeared. But the computers still connect the wrong way around. (Windows to ubuntu instead of ubuntu to windows) Reinstalled SP3...

• php rsync with exec() not working

  Why this: rsync -avz -e ssh /home/userneme/folder [email protected]:/var/www/folder works from cronjob and this: exec("rsync -avz -e ssh /home/userneme/folder [email protected]:/var/www/folder"); doesn't work. I know exec is working because i have a few places in my appp that do convercion from pdf to jpg with ImageMagick (exec). SOLVED exec is working OK it was a permission issue on remote server. "Local" server is shared reseller account and remote server is my first VPS Ubuntu 10.10 LAMP box. If only I had a system administrator since i'm just a software developer forced to do this and i stink at it :) Thank You all!

• VirtualBox won't use any kind of hardware acceleration

  I see an problem with VirtualBox hardware acceleration functionality... My system configuration: MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) (BIOS: 2.70) Intel Core i5-2400 Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit Oracle VirtualBox 4.1.10 Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack 4.1.10 I can select the individual acceleration options such as PAE/NX, VT-x/VMD-V or Nested Paging within VM-Settings but if I start the VM the accelerations will be disabled as of the tooltip from CPU (right next to shared folders). Each acceleration is "Disabled". Does this sounds familar to anybody? How can I solve this?

  I'm having a problem with Ubuntu that I'm finding hard to troubleshoot for reasons that will become clear: reboot -bash: /sbin/reboot: Input/output error dmesg -bash: /bin/dmesg: Input/output error ps -e ps: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libproc-3.2.8.so: cannot read file data: Input/output error lsof -bash: /usr/bin/lsof: Input/output error fsck -bash: /sbin/fsck: Input/output error badblocks -bash: /sbin/badblocks: Input/output error So I can't see what is going on, and I can't remotely reboot. What can I do to get to the bottom of this? Interestingly: init 0 Segmentation fault I can cat /var/syslog but not /var/log/messages or several other important files. less and more don't work, neither do tail or head, etc.

• Write permission when mounting Windows shares from Ubuntu

  I think I'm close to having my dev environment set up exactly the way I want, but one final snag remains. I'm running VirtualBox on a Windows 7 64bit host, with my dev enviroment inside a Ubuntu 12.04 guest. I want to keep the files for my projects on the host filesystem - partly so I can access them when the Ubuntu guest is not running, but also so I can use Tortoise and other Windows based tools (cough Photoshop), and it also eases my backup scheme somewhat. So I've got a folder "Rails" on my NTFS drive, which I've shared from the host with a user specifically created for the Ubuntu guest. The mount point has been set up and an entry added to fstab (cifs), using a credentials file and the options iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=07??77 This mounts fine and my Ubuntu user has both read and write permissions to the contents, but when I try to start my Rails app I get permission errors on any files the app needs to write to (e.g. the log file). What gives?

• How do I share a complete XP disk so it can be seen from a Windows 7 system?

  This should be easier! (both computers can see the internet etc so I know the network it’s self is working) I have a normal home network with a Windows XP machine on it and the new Windows 7 (64 bit) machine. So I can transfer the files to the new Windows 7 machine, I wish to share the complete disk (and all files) from the Windows XP machine and access them from the Windows 7 machine. Is there a step by step set of instructions for doing this anywhere? So fare I have: put both computers into the same workgroup put the windows 7 machine into work network mode so it can see the XP machine in the work group shared the XP disk as read only But when I try to access a lot of the folders on the XP disks, I am told I am not allowed to access them. (I was not asked for any passwords by the windows 7 machine when I accessed the XP machine. The XP machine just has its default account with no password set on it)

  I've been trying to get Windows 7 to make a backup for a week or so. I'm backing up to a local NAS and I'm getting this error: Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options Check your backup Windows Backup could not create a zip file. This could be because the drive that Windows is installed on does not have enough space or it could be a temporary error. Make sure you have at least 400 MB of free space and try again.   I have a development setup from this tutorial: http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/10/27/build-your-own-dev-server-with-virtualbox/ But what I can't figure out is how to share a folder on my Ubuntu virtualized machine with the host Win7. I want to use a Windows text editor to edit code that's on my Ubuntu server. I've tried using the Shared Folders setting, adding "/var/www" but it says that the path is not absolute. When I click on "other", it only allows me to browse folders on my Win7 host. Both the host and guest are 64-bit OS. Thanks in advance!

• Which AMI should I use as a base for a Django application?

I don't have much experience with such things, having only used a shared host before (WebFaction). So I'm wondering, which AMI should I use as a base? I'm assuming I want an Ubuntu AMI, possibly with certain things like Apache pre-installed? One minor point: I'm planning to serve several different Django projects from the same instance. We have a second Server 2008 (hereafter called SHARE) which is joined to that domain and has a disk shared as a network share (\\share\Office). • Apache mpm-itk Performance

  I manage a bunch of VPSs with memory ranging from 1GB to 8GB. Most of these websites are Joomla websites, and the servers must support multiple sites/users/S-FTP. I use mpm-itk almost exclusively (mostly due to it's convenience in these shared environments). However, I'm aware it isn't known for performance, so I need some advice on making it faster. Due to the lack of documentation when I first went the way of mpm-itk, I included only one setting in the config, and that was to limit each user to 50 clients (the rest I left up to defaults): <IfModule mpm_itk_module> MaxClientsVHost 50 </IfModule> Are there any better alternatives available? Are there any settings supported in mpm-prefork or mpm-worker that are also supported in mpm-itk? Thanks!

• Setting up NIS/NFS on Mac OS 10.6

  We have an Ubuntu NIS/NFS server at work and we recently got a few new iMacs. Is there a way to set them up so they can use the linux user accounts and mount the shared nfs files? Are there any guides on how to do this? I've been googling with no success. I tried getting NFS to work by connecting to the server via the Disk Utility but after I run 'sudo automount' from the command line and ls the directory I tried to mount it to (Volumes/nfs) it gives a permissions error. If there isn't a way to do this, anyone know of any not to complicated ways to share user accounts and files between mac and linux computers (and even hypothetically a windows computer one day?) I know its kind a of huge question, but I'll greatly appreciate any advice on the topic. Thanks!

• wmpnetwork.exe service clogs CPU usage

  We have remote locations each with 2 ASUS media extenders that stream from a computer with a shared Media Player library. Lately, several of these locations experience the "wmpnetwork.exe" service throttling the CPU to 100% usage. Killing the service only results in it starting back up, and so far the only temporary solution is to uninstall Media Player. A lot of these computers are also about 3-5 years old.
