• What is the difference between MVC model 1 and model 2?

  I've recently discovered that MVC is supposed to have two different flavors, model one and model two. I'm supposed to give a presentation on MVC1 and I was instructed that "it's not the web based version, that is refered to as MVC2". As the presentations are about design patterns in general, I doubt that this separation is related to Java (I found some info on Sun's site, but it seemed far off) or ASP. I have a pretty good understanding of what MVC is and I've used several (web) frameworks that enforce it, but this terminology is new to me. How is the web-based version different from other MVC (I'm guessing GUI) implementations? Does it have something to do with the stateless nature of HTTP? Thanks, Alex

• Eclipse keyword highlighting in in my own text editor

  I made a simple text editor in eclipse to which I added some simple WordRule based syntax highlighting to highlight the language keywords. The problem is that when a keyword is part of an identifier (eg. "import" is part of "extra_import"), then "import" is highlighted in "extra_import". How can I stop eclipse to highlight a a keyword if it is only a sub string of another string? Anlther question; is there a regular expression based IRule? What is the purpose of WhitespaceRule? White spaces are usually not highlighted. Thaks

• OpenGL ES 2.0: Mixing 2D with 3D

  Is it possible to mix 2D and 3D graphics in a single OpenGL ES 2.0 game, please? I have plenty of 2D graphics in my game. The 2D graphics is represented by two triangular polygons (making up a rectangle) with texture on them. I use orthographic matrix to render the whole scene. However, I need to add some 3D effects into my game. Threfore, I wish to use perspective camera to render the meshes. Is it possible to mix orthographic and perspective camera in one scene? If yes, is there going to be a large performance cost for this? Is there any recommended approach to do this effectively? I wil have 90% of 2D graphics and only 10% of 3D. Target platform is OpenGL ES 2.0 (iOS, Android). I use C++ to develop. Thank you.

• How to have combobox take data from a child datasource

  I am trying to have a datagridview with two comboboxes, a company name and a supplier account number. When a company name is selected the relevant supplier account numbers (a company can have more than one supplier account) should be filtered for that company in that row. I have a datagridview with two bindingsources: supplierBindingSource and companyBindingSource and the Supplier account combobox uses the supplierBindingSource for its datasource and company name uses the companyBindingSource for its datasource. A company can have a supplier and/or customer account so the supplierBindingSource is a child or a companyBindingSource. The supplier accounts correctly filter based on the selected company name however when another company name is selected in another row all the supplier accounts are filtered for that company. Saving still works properly, regardless of what the combo box show but currently it is very confusing for a user to select a supplier account when the labels don't show what is being saved. Is it possible to have only the selected row to filter based on the company name rather than every row? The supplier account gets filtered when the drop down box is selected and restored to the full list when selection is finished. The issue I've run into now is that I can get the companyID (which is the valuemember for the company combobox) but I cannot select the appropriate company without just setting the value of the combobox to the companyID which displays the companyID instead of the company name. Is there a way to select the company using the companyID while preserving the displaymember/valuemember dynamic? EDIT 2: The wall of text may be off putting. Some code to help elucidate my issue DataGridViewComboBoxCell dgcb2 = (DataGridViewComboBoxCell)sdgvSalesOrderLines[cmbSupplierName.Index, e.RowIndex]; var companyID = col.FirstOrDefault(c => c.AccountID == Convert.ToInt32(dgcb.Value)).CompanyID; dgcb2.Value = companyID.toString(); The second line gets the companyID and that works just fine, the final line sets the combobox to display the companyID whereas I would like it to set the valuemember value to companyID so that it would display the corresponding company name. I can set the second line to give me the company name instead but if the value of the combobox isn't the companyID then the supplier account cannot filter based on the company selected.

  Hi, I am all in favor of CSS based layouts, but this one I just can't figure out. I have looked through many examples (and "holy grails") of liquid and table less three-column CSS based layouts, but I have not found one which is not using some kind of margin-left for the middle column ("Content"). Any margin-left will suck once "Left" is gone as "Content" will just stay at it's place. I'm just about to switch to old school table based layout for this problem, so I'm hoping someone has some idea - I don't care about excess markup, wrappers and the like, I would just like to know how to solve this with plain CSS. • How can I convert arbitrary strings to CLS-Compliant names?

  Does anyone know of an algorithm (or external library) that I could call to convert an arbitrary string (i.e. outside my control) to be CLS compliant? I am generating a dynamic RDLC (Client Report Definition) for an ASP.Net Report Viewer control and some of the field names need to be based on strings entered by the user. Unfortunately I have little control over the entry of the field names by the client (through a 3rd party CMS). But I am quite flexible around substitutions required to create the compliant string. I have a reactive hack algorithm for now along the lines of: public static string FormatForDynamicRdlc(this string s) { //We need to change this string to be CLS compliant. return s.Replace(Environment.NewLine, string.Empty) .Replace("\t", string.Empty) .Replace(",", string.Empty) .Replace("-", "_") .Replace(" ", "_"); } But I would love something more comprehensive. But because I'm new to module dev overall I couldn't figure it out based on the answer. • jQuery if checkbox is checked to toggle classes

  I am needed to change my jQuery code up. Instead of the label toggling the class and showing the icon I need it to where if the checkbox is checked to show to toggle those classes. I have tried prop and is but I couldn't get them to work properly. The reason for the change is I want to preload data into the form and if it's going to be checked those toggles need to reflect that change. http://jsfiddle.net/70fbLooL/2/ EDIT Seems to be confusion as to exactly what I am trying to do. The fiddle I provided works perfectly fine. The problem is if I want to call the form from server-side and pre-populate the form the checkbox toggles will not show that they are checked because it's based on the clicked function. I need it to be based on if the checkbox equal true or checked. That way if the value equals true from the server-side call it will toggle those classes and look like it's checked.

• High Availability for IaaS, PaaS and SaaS in the Cloud

  Outages, natural disasters and unforeseen events have proved that even in a distributed architecture, you need to plan for High Availability (HA). In this entry I'll explain a few considerations for HA within Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). In a separate post I'll talk more about Disaster Recovery (DR), since each paradigm has a different way to handle that. Planning for HA in IaaS IaaS involves Virtual Machines - so in effect, an HA strategy here takes on many of the same characteristics as it would on-premises. The primary difference is that the vendor controls the hardware, so you need to verify what they do for things like local redundancy and so on from the hardware perspective. As far as what you can control and plan for, the primary factors fall into three areas: multiple instances, geographical dispersion and task-switching. In almost every cloud vendor I've studied, to ensure your application will be protected by any level of HA, you need to have at least two of the Instances (VM's) running. This makes sense, but you might assume that the vendor just takes care of that for you - they don't. If a single VM goes down (for whatever reason) then the access to it is lost. Depending on multiple factors, you might be able to recover the data, but you should assume that you can't. You should keep a sync to another location (perhaps the vendor's storage system in another geographic datacenter or to a local location) to ensure you can continue to serve your clients. You'll also need to host the same VM's in another geographical location. Everything from a vendor outage to a network path problem could prevent your users from reaching the system, so you need to have multiple locations to handle this. This means that you'll have to figure out how to manage state between the geo's. If the system goes down in the middle of a transaction, you need to figure out what part of the process the system was in, and then re-create or transfer that state to the second set of systems. If you didn't write the software yourself, this is non-trivial. You'll also need a manual or automatic process to detect the failure and re-route the traffic to your secondary location. You could flip a DNS entry (if your application can tolerate that) or invoke another process to alias the first system to the second, such as load-balancing and so on. There are many options, but all of them involve coding the state into the application layer. If you've simply moved a state-ful application to VM's, you may not be able to easily implement an HA solution. Planning for HA in PaaS Implementing HA in PaaS is a bit simpler, since it's built on the concept of stateless applications deployment. Once again, you need at least two copies of each element in the solution (web roles, worker roles, etc.) to remain available in a single datacenter. Also, you need to deploy the application again in a separate geo, but the advantage here is that you could work out a "shared storage" model such that state is auto-balanced across the world. In fact, you don't have to maintain a "DR" site, the alternate location can be live and serving clients, and only take on extra load if the other site is not available. In Windows Azure, you can use the Traffic Manager service top route the requests as a type of auto balancer. Even with these benefits, I recommend a second backup of storage in another geographic location. Storage is inexpensive; and that second copy can be used for not only HA but DR. Planning for HA in SaaS In Software-as-a-Service (such as Office 365, or Hadoop in Windows Azure) You have far less control over the HA solution, although you still maintain the responsibility to ensure you have it. Since each SaaS is different, check with the vendor on the solution for HA - and make sure you understand what they do and what you are responsible for. They may have no HA for that solution, or pin it to a particular geo, or perhaps they have a massive HA built in with automatic load balancing (which is often the case).   All of these options (with the exception of SaaS) involve higher costs for the design. Do not sacrifice reliability for cost - that will always cost you more in the end. Build in the redundancy and HA at the very outset of the project - if you try to tack it on later in the process the business will push back and potentially not implement HA.   i am creating a mysql function which takes in a varchar and change it to a int based on a mapping table. select name, convert_to_code(country) from users where sex = 'male' here, the convert_to_code() function takes in a country name (e.g. Japan, Finland..) and change it to country code which is an integer (e.g. 1001, 2310..) based on a mapping table called country_maping like below: country_name (varchar) | country_code (int) Japan | 1001 Finland | 2310 Canada | 8756 currently, the stored function need to select country_code from country_mapping where country_name = country_name and return the query result. is that possible to create a hash data struct in SP to optimize the process so that it will not need to perform the query for each row matches the where clause. thanks in advance!

  I've never seen this done but I had an idea of doing authorization in a more purely OO way. For each method that requires authorization we associate a delegate. During initialization of the class we wire up the delegates so that they point to the appropriate method (based on the user's rights). For example: class User { private deleteMemberDelegate deleteMember; public StatusMessage DeleteMember(Member member) { if(deleteMember != null) { deleteMember(member); } } //other methods defined similarly... User(string name, string password) //cstor. { //wire up delegates based on user's rights. //Thus we handle authentication and authorization in the same method. } } This way the client code never has to explictly check whether or not a user is in a role, it just calls the method. Of course each method should return a status message so that we know if and why it failed. Thoughts?

• How should I deal with persisting an Android WebView if my activity gets destroyed while showing ano

  Hi, I'm building an Android application that's based around an enhanced WebView (based on PhoneGap). I've enhanced the WebView so that from JavaScript running inside you can invoke the native contact picker to choose a phone number (which may be supplied by Facebook for example). The problem I have is that the native contact picker runs in an activity in another process and the Android docs say that while another activity is open my activity may get destroyed due to memory constraints. I haven't actually seen this happen in my application but if it did then I'm guessing my WebView's state would be destroyed and the code that was waiting for the picked contact would be terminated. It seems a bit crazy that the activity requesting a contact could be destroyed while the contact picker is open. Does anyone know if that does indeed happen? Is there a way to persist the state of the WebView if it does? Thanks, -Shaun

• Querying datatable to get rows with a certain value in the first column

  I am currently using the code below and am wondering if it would be possible to query based on an entry value. At the moment it returns the number of rows that have been defined. var q = sqlData.AsEnumerable().Take(2); This data comes in from a database and is imputed into the table but at the moment it only returns database data into the datatable and allows me to select the first two rows and I was wondering if I can query the data table so that I can get the rows that I require based on an index in the actual table itself (e.g. in the table I find five rows and query this information out).

• Google analytics-style custom report builder UI

  I'm looking for a reporting engine/UI that can be integrated into a product, which has a UI along the lines of Google Analytics' Custom Reports builder. Is anyone aware of such a thing? The data is in our case is not page views/visitors/etc, but is similar in nature, in that there are limited entities or types of data, but each entity has many attributes/columns and many different ways of aggregating data (or in GA-style speak, metrics and dimensions). The analytics-style UI is very intuitive and allows many reports to be created in powerful ways, without having to know SQL. I have preference for a web-based tool (seeing that it is 2010 and this is a web app -- I mention only because it seems the vast majority of reporting tools still have only a non-web-based creation tool).

• Best Option for Creating A Small Church Website

  I've been asked to create a website for a small church. Their prior site was hosted on geocities which is no longer. They are not looking for anything robust, just an informational site with a calendar and maybe a contact form. The church would also like to be able to administer the site with little technical know-how. Cost is also an issue. Given these requirements, something like sites.google.com seems like a good option. However, my main concern is that Sites will suffer the same fate as geocities. It is definitely not a flagship Google product. Are there other good alternatives that fit the requirements?

• After upgrading to 2008 R2 Enterprise and installing more RAM, Windows can only see 4.00 GB

  (I have also posted this on technet but I'm running out of ideas) I've upgraded from Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise in order to make use of more RAM. The server previously had 32GB of RAM. The upgrade from Standard to Enterprise, using DISM, seemed to go OK, so I powered down and installed the RAM. This a Dell Poweredge T710, I was taking it from 32GB to 72GB. The BIOS recognised the RAM, although I needed to change from "Advanced ECC" to "Optimizer" mode for it to use all of it. After rebooting, windows can see the RAM but in the system panel will display: Installed memory (RAM): 72.0 GB (4.00 GB usable) In the resource monitor, the remainder of the RAM is showing as reserved for hardware. I've tried various RAM configurations, including reverting it to the same chips and same configuration as before the upgrade, but always just 4.00 GB is showing up as usable. Following some threads on these forums I've gone into msconfig and set the maximum memory "by hand" but that doesn't fix the problem. BIOS doesn't seem to have anything that looks like memory remapping which is another suggestion that has come up. How do I make this RAM available to Windows? It was available before the upgrade, because I could use the full 32GB RAM the server had to start with.
