  • How to index filenames, size and basic informations for every file on a network?

    I have several machines, most of then are Linux and one of them is under Mac OS X. Each machine has several internal hard drives, and I also have a few external hard drives. How can I reliably find files with setup ? External drives are not always plugged, but the files don't move often. Ideally I would like to be able to search the metadata given with the 'file' command, and move files over the network.

For those from the fairer OS: how much memory does the operating system take up? how much memory does Google Chrome, with 10-15 tabs open, probably a Youtube, Gmail, Docs among them, usually take up? Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint? I plan on purchasing the 1.86Ghz 13" Macbook Air.

I have bought my new netbook Acer Aspire One 751h some days ago and was very unpleased with it performance - videotalking in skype is almost unuseable, watching videos on YouTube(even in standart definition) is like watching slideshow and all netbook have increadible lags if I'm running more then 4-5 programms in one time.     is there a way to fix your windows 7 professional guest host os ipaddress so it does not change every time you startup? I am currently using NAT for networking and would like to remain using this networking method if possible. In older versions of windows this never used to be a problem in vmware so I am wondering if I am missing a setting in windows 7 professional or in vmware. thank you for your help, chris

    I am looking to create a custom boot DVD to run my unattended installs of windows 2008. I would like to have a menu system that lets the tech select what version of the OS they would like to install and version (x86/x64). I know you can run the windows 2008 setup, and exit to command prompt, but I would like there to just be a menu that will kick off whichever script needed. What would be the best way to do this?     On Mac OS X I keep data on a local server mirrored with the same data on a remote server with a scheduled backup task done with Carbon Copy Cloner. After the backup is done a bash script is run as specified in the scheduled task options of CCC. Is the script run as root? Or differently and more generally: as my script writes to a log file, what command should I put on my script to see on the log if the script is running as root or something else?

  • How can I make monodevelop render text in KDE?

    Monodevelop from git in KDE 4.10.2 does not render text in code edit tabs I tried with xfce and text is rendered ok there. I tried disabling composition with alt shift f12 and restarting x server but it was no better. I also tried disabling font softening in monodevelop options and disabling plugins. I also tried temporarily deleting my KDE profile. This is dual screen setup on Nvidia with nouveau. OS is slackware64-current.

  • How can I reset the permissions of /bin /boot /etc and /dev to orignal owner, Ubuntu?

    I accidentally changed the ownership of the /bin, /boot, /etc and /dev recursively to nobody:nogroup using chown when I misplaced a forward slash! How can I resort the original file ownerships? I've managed to get them all to root:root but I'm not sure if all the files should be owned by root and if this will break something? Is they are option to fix file permissions like there is in OS X? Help!

    I have a mac that is hooked into a sound board, I have external sound card that interfaces between the computer and the soundboard, this works great. However, whenever the computer restarts it sets the input & output to the 'internal microphone' and the 'built in output'. I'd like to default to the other soundcard. How can I do this?   • Which IP addresses are using remote dekstop?

    We have a server that has an open remote desktop port to the internet (no VPN.) Several people are allowed to log on to the machine remotely. The server runs Windows 7 (desktop OS.) I can find logon times using Event Viewer, but it does not show the IP address of the remote machine. At any rate, manually browsing Event Viewer for all login events would be time consuming, to say the least.) Is a way to find out which IP addresses are using Remote Dekstop ?
