  • Backing up my locally hosted rails apps in preparation for OS upgrade

    I have some apps running on Heroku. I will be upgrading my OS in two weeks. The last time I upgraded though (6 months ago) I ran into some problems. Here's what I did: copied all my rails apps onto DVD upgraded OS transferred rails apps from DVD to new OS Then, after setting up new SSH-keys I tried to push to some of my heroku apps and, whilst I can't remember the exact error message off-hand, it more or less amounted to "fatal exception the remote end hung up" So I know that I'm doing something wrong here. First of all, is there any need for me to be putting my heroku hosted rails apps onto DVD? Would I be better just pulling all my apps from their heroku repos once I've done the upgrade? What do others do here? The reason I stuck them on DVD is because I tend to push a specific production branch to Heroku and sometimes omit large development files from it... Secondly, was this problem caused by SSH keys? Should I have backed up the old keys and transferred them from my old OS to my new one too, or is Heroku perfectly happy to let you change OS's like that? My solution in the end was to just create new heroku apps and reassign the custom domain names in heroku add-ons menu... I never actually though of pulling from the heroku repos as I tend to push a specific branch to heroku and that branch doesn't always have all the development files in it... I realise that the error message I mentioned doesn't particularly help anyone but I didn't think to remember it 6 months ago. Any advice would be appreciated PS - when I say upgrade, I mean full install of the new version with full format of the HDD.

  • XAMPP or MAMP on Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard)

    I just bought a new MacBook Pro which comes with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (Mac OS X 10.6.2). I am used to using XAMPP as my local development server on XP. Since Mac OS X is based on Unix, I was thinking on activating/installing all the necessary stuff as I would normally do on Linux. However, I am not quite ready to be playing around with the system at this point so having an external package would be a nice temporary solution I think. The question is whether I should go with MAMP or XAMPP. Does anybody have any suggestions? The Pro and Cons I suppose. As far as I know, Mac OS X comes with Apache2 and PHP5. Would MAMP or XAMPP modify the existing Apache and PHP installation? Any comments on how I should proceed? PS: Eventually I would use the default installation of Apache and PHP, and install a binary package of MySQL but time for development is an essence and I don't have time to familiarize myself with Mac OS X.

  • Mac OS X 10.9 with GCC 4.7.3, stdlib.h: no such file or directory

    I'm doing some development with C++ on Mac OS. The code worked fine on Mac OS 10.8.3/10.8.4, with GCC 4.7.3. However recently I upgraded my OS to Mavericks 10.9 and Xcode 5.0. I find that when I try to compile my code, both gcc/g++/clang responds with: *******.C:1:** stdlib.h:no such file or directory *******.C:2:** iostream.h:no such file or directory Since I'm not familiar with Mac OS(My working platform is openSUSE), what can I do for it? will it help if I install "Command Line Tools" from Xcode? Or is there anyway that I could re-build the include index? Include dir of GCC is /opt/local/include/gcc47 and it seems there is a stdlib.h in it. The path is /opt/local/include/gcc47/c++/tr1/ Please help me, and thank you very much.

  • Raw socket sendto() failure in OS X

    When I open a raw socket is OS X, construct my own udp packet (headers and data), and call sendto(), I get the error "Invalid Argument". Here is a sample program "rawudp.c" from the web site http://www.tenouk.com/Module43a.html that demonstrates this problem. The program (after adding string and stdlib #includes) runs under Fedora 10 but fails with "Invalid Argument" under OS X. Can anyone suggest why this fails in OS X? I have looked and looked and looked at the sendto() call, but all the parameters look good. I'm running the code as root, etc. Is there perhaps a kernel setting that prevents even uid 0 executables from sending packets through raw sockets in OS X Snow Leopard? Thanks.

  • The algorithm used to generate recommendations in Google News?

    Hi everyone. I'm study recommendation engines, and I went through the paper that defines how Google News generates recommendations to users for news items which might be of their interest, based on collaborative filtering. One interesting technique that they mention is Minhashing. I went through what it does, but I'm pretty sure that what I have is a fuzzy idea and there is a strong chance that I'm wrong. The following is what I could make out of it :- Collect a set of all news items. Define a hash function for a user. This hash function returns the index of the first item from the news items which this user viewed, in the list of all news items. Collect, say "n" number of such values, and represent a user with this list of values. Based on the similarity count between these lists, we can calculate the similarity between users as the number of common items. This reduces the number of comparisons a lot. Based on these similarity measures, group users into different clusters. This is just what I think it might be. In Step 2, instead of defining a constant hash function, it might be possible that we vary the hash function in a way that it returns the index of a different element. So one hash function could return the index of the first element from the user's list, another hash function could return the index of the second element from the user's list, and so on. So the nature of the hash function satisfying the minwise independent permutations condition, this does sound like a possible approach. Could anyone please confirm if what I think is correct? Or the minhashing portion of Google News Recommendations, functions in some other way? I'm new to internal implementations of recommendations. Any help is appreciated a lot. Thanks!

  • Programming on Leopard for iPhone OS 3.1.3

    Hey, I got Leopard with XCode 3.1 and SDK 3.0, when opening the organizer and trying to debug on my ipod I received "The version of iPhone OS on "..." does not match any of the versions of iPhone OS supported for development with this copy of xCode...". It tells me with my xCode I can only develop for iPhone OS 3.0 or less, so I downloaded the new xCode + SDK installation bundle, knowing the SDK can't be installed on Leopard. In the installation it tells me "If you don't want to install the SDK, press disagree", and so I did, but in the next screen he forces me to choose a drive for the SDK, and then says "you can't install the SDK on leopard system", and I can't pass this screen. My question is: is it even possible to program on Leopard for iPhone OS 3.1.3? I really want to debug my apps on my iPod (framework 3.1.3, 3G) Thanks ahead!! By the way: I can't so simply upgrade to snow leopard because it's a hackintosh, so I prefer a different way..

    A very simple java code inside a doGet() servlet is getting more than a second of cpu time on GAE. I have read some quota related documentation and apparently I am not doing anything wrong. //Request the user Agent info String userAgent = req.getHeader("User-Agent"); I wanted to know what was using the CPU the most, I use a google help recommendation. //The two lines below will get the CPU before requesting User-Agent Information QuotaService qs = QuotaServiceFactory.getQuotaService(); long start = qs.getCpuTimeInMegaCycles(); //Request the user Agent info String userAgent = req.getHeader("User-Agent"); //The three lines below will get the CPU after requesting User-Agent Information // and informed it to the application log. long end = qs.getCpuTimeInMegaCycles(); double cpuSeconds = qs.convertMegacyclesToCpuSeconds(end - start); log.warning("CPU Seconds on geting User Agent: " + cpuSeconds); The only thing that the code above tells me is that inspecting the header will use more than a second (1000ms) of cpu time, which for Google is a warning on the log panel. That seems to be a very simple request and still is using more than a second of cpu. What I am missing?

  • Secure Copy File from remote server via scp and os module in Python

    I'm pretty new to Python and programming. I'm trying to copy a file between two computers via a python script. However the code os.system("ssh " + hostname + " scp " + filepath + " " + user + "@" + localhost + ":" cwd) won't work. I think it needs a password, as descriped in How do I copy a file to a remote server in python using scp or ssh?. I didn't get any error logs, the file just won't show in my current working directory. However every other command with os.system("ssh " + hostname + "command") or os.popen("ssh " + hostname + "command") does work. - command = e.g. ls When I try ssh hostname scp file user@local:directory in the commandline it works without entering a password. I tried to combine os.popen commands with getpass and pxssh module to establish a ssh connection to the remote server and use it to send commands directly (I only tested it for an easy command): import pxssh import getpass ssh = pxssh.pxssh() ssh.force_password = True hostname = raw_input("Hostname: ") user = raw_input("Username: ") password = getpass.getpass("Password: ") ssh.login(hostname, user, password) test = os.popen("hostname") print test But I'm not able to put commands through to the remote server (print test shows, that hostname = local and not the remote server), however I'm sure, the conection is established. I thought it would be easier to establish a connection than always use "ssh " + hostname in the bash commands. I also tried some of the workarounds in How do I copy a file to a remote server in python using scp or ssh?, but I must admit due to lack of expirience I didn't get them to work.     I have setup some dropdown menus allowing users to find pages on my website by selecting options across multiple dropdowns: eg. Color of Car, Year This would generate a link like: mysite.xyz/blue/2010/ The only problem is, because this link is dynamically assembled with Javascript, I've also had to assemble each possible combination from the dropdowns into a list like: <noscript> No javascript enabled? Here are all the links: <a href='mysite.xyz/blue/2009/'>mysite.xyz/blue/2009/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/blue/2010/'>mysite.xyz/blue/2010/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/red/2009/'>mysite.xyz/red/2009/</a> <a href='mysite.xyz/red/2010/'>mysite.xyz/red/2010/</a> </noscript> My question is, if I put these in a tag like this, will I be penalized or anything by search engines such as Google? I've already been doing so for some navigational stuff which required offsets etc. However, now I would be listing a whole list of links here too. I want to provide them here, moreso so that google can actually index my pages - but for those without javascript, they can still navigate too. Your thoughts? Also.. even though I have some links that appear to have been indexed, I AM NOT 100% SURE, which is why I'm asking :P

    My code is below, and I had an issue with nearly the same code, and it was fixed here on StackOverflow, but, again, its not working. I haven't changed the working code, but i did wrap it in the for...in loop youll see below.     While the NSCurrentLocaleDidChangeNotification perfectly makes sense on Mac OS X, I don't see how you can possibly receive it on iPhone OS. In order to change the locale, you have to quit the running application, then change it in Settings ? General ? International ? Region Format. At that point, your app is not running, so how could it receive the notification? I first thought this notification was leftover from the Mac OS X documentation, but then I found this in Apple Push Notification Service Programming Guide: The application might send its provider the preferred language every time the user changes something in the current locale. To do this, you can listen for the notification named NSCurrentLocaleDidChangeNotification and, in your notification-handling method, get the code identifying the preferred language and send that to your provider. So, how do you trigger this notification on iPhone OS?

    I'm building a Windows Phone application and my client has given me a list of languages that he would like the App to be localized for. The problem is that some of those languages are not supported by Windows Phone and I then decided to check out the list of supported langauges which is available here. I noticed that there are two OS option for Windows Phone, i.e. 7.0 and 7.1 but during development I am not sure of how to check for which OS the phone is running so that I know which list of languages to supply to the user. I'd like to know how to check if the Windows Phone OS is 7.0 or 7.1 (I'm assuming that his caters for later OS versions that might have come after the list was created)

    I have googled for the answer all day and still couldn't find an answer. I have a virtual subdomain www.static.example.com which is a mirror site of www.example.com. It means I have just one root folder for subdomain and domain aswell. I want to redirect crawlers to different robots.txt file - robots_static.txt when they see .static in url in which I will forbid indexing via /disallow command. I want to do this because I have duplicated content in Google search results. Subdomain is showing the exact same content as the main domain. Does anyone know how could I achieve that crawlers sees robots_static.txt instead of robots.txt? the build path of the project. Question: Is there anywhere else i have to include the postgre? While creating GWT project i did not uncheck app engine. is it a problem? can someone tell me what i am doing wrong?
