• Farseer Physics Samples and Krypton how to reference game

  I'm sure this is totally simple and yes I am new at this. I am trying to set up Krypton inside farseer. 1. create a new Krypton engine in my sub screen aka AdvancedDemo1 : PhysicsGameScreen, IDemoScreen Via this.krypton = new KryptonEngine(this, "KryptonEffect"); The problem is the KryptonEngine(this wants reference to Game game, I cant seem to reference it from FarseerPhysicsGame : Game So how would I do that? or 2. I can put it directly in FarsserPhysicsGame but again I cant seem to figure out how to reference FarseerPhysicsGame in AdvancedDemo1. or 3. I can put it inside the public FarseerPhysicsGame() and do Componenets.Add(krypton) [which works] HOWEVER I cant figure out how to reference the compoenet once it is added. You should be able to stop reading here , but for more detail I simply took the Farseer XNA Samples went into FarseerPhysicsGame.cs and deleted all the screens and menus except AdvancedDemo1 so there is one option and I just click that to load into the advancedDemo1 and thats where I want to put the lights from krypton. Thanks. Edit: Figured out 1 solution though I am still curious about others. Solution 1 I was able to use ScreenManager.Game(not sure why it was there but Ill try to figure it out later)

• Client and Server game update speed

  I am working on a simple two player networked asteroids game using XNA and the Lidgren networking library. For this set up I have a Lidgren server maintaining what I want to be the true state of the game, and the XNA game is the Lidgren client. The client sends key inputs to the server, and the server process the key inputs against game logic, sending back updates. (This seemed like a better idea then sending local positions to the server.) The client also processes the key inputs on its own, so as to not have any visible lag, and then interpolates between the local position and remote position. Based on what I have been reading this is the correct way to smooth out a networked game. The only thing I don’t get is what value to use as the time deltas. Currently every message the server sends it also sends a delta-time update with it, which is time between the last update. The client then saves this delta time to use for its local position updates, so they can be using roughly the same time deltas to calculate position updates. I know the XNA game update gets called 60 times a second, so I set my server to update the game state at the same speed. This will probably only work as long as the game is working on a fixed time step and will probably cause problems if I want to change that in the future. The server sends updates to clients on another thread, which runs at 10 updates per second to cut down on bandwidth. I do not see noticeable lag in movement and over time if no user input is received the local and remote positions converge on each other as they should. I am also not currently calculating for any latency as I am trying to go one step at a time. So my question is should the XNA client be using its current game time to update the local game state and not being using time deltas sent by the server? If I should be using the clients time delta between updates how do I keep it in-line with how fast the server is updating its game state?

• Making HTML5 videos stored on AWS S3 **difficult** to download (because I cant make it impossible)

  I am building a website that hosts video's stored on AWS's S3 service. The videos are played thru a HTML5 player we have built. Ive just been asked to make sure "nobody can steal our video's". Now I know that if you really don't want something stolen, don't put it up on the internet. However I just need to secure these videos as good as possible, the videos need to at the very least resist someone going thru the source code and trying to download them manually. One option available to me is to completely rebuild the video player in flash. This is not ideal, for several reasons, notably because I would also then have to build an App for mobile devices to be able to view this site. So I am looking for other options. I have heard about using a token to make the file available only during certain times. I have heard of using a separate file to serve the videos that sits between the HTML5 page and the video file. I am also having a look at IAM, the Secure AWS Access Control, in the hopes AWS can solve this problem for me. Can anyone here recommend any of these options? Or perhaps suggest other options available to me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Should I HttpCombine Google Jquery Hosted File?

  Hi I am using something called HttpCombiner: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HttpCombiner An HTTP handler that combines multiple CSS, Javascript or URL into one response for faster page load. It can combine, compress and cache response which results in faster page load and better scalability of web application It's a good practice to use many small Javascript and CSS files instead of one large Javascript/CSS file for better code maintainability, but bad in terms of website performance. Although you should write your Javascript code in small files and break large CSS files into small chunks but when browser requests those javascript and css files, it makes one Http request per file. Every Http Request results in a network roundtrip form your browser to the server and the delay in reaching the server and coming back to the browser is called latency. So, if you have four javascripts and three css files loaded by a page, you are wasting time in seven network roundtrips. Within USA, latency is average 70ms. So, you waste 7x70 = 490ms, about half a second of delay. Outside USA, average latency is around 200ms. So, that means 1400ms of waiting. Browser cannot show the page properly until Css and Javascripts are fully loaded. So, the more latency you have, the slower page loads. You can reduce the wait time by using a CDN. Read my previous blog post about using CDN. However, a better solution is to deliver multiple files over one request using an HttpHandler that combines several files and delivers as one output. So, instead of putting many or tag, you just put one and one tag, and point them to the HttpHandler. You tell the handler which files to combine and it delivers those files in one response. This saves browser from making many requests and eliminates the latency. This Http Handler reads the file names defined in a configuration and combines all those files and delivers as one response. It delivers the response as gzip compressed to save bandwidth. Moreover, it generates proper cache header to cache the response in browser cache, so that, browser does not request it again on future visit. Now I am wondering since it can handle adding links should I put in it the jquery file? The reason I am not sure is if it gets combined with my other files I think I might close the advantages of it being hosted on googles servers such as caching(my thinking is if it gets combined it will look different so even if a user has it in it's cache I am not sure if it will use the one for the cahce or not). So should I combine it or only the finals that I am using locally?

• Problems with 3D transformation - (SharpDX)

  First of all , I have been trying to get this right for a couple of day already, I have read so much info and still fail miserably to understand this. So I am going to tell you that even though I have done fairly amount of research myself, I failed to implement it. I must say miserably I am trying to create a generic camera class for a game engine of sorts - for research purposes only - the thing is I have no idea how to go about it. I have read about quaternions and matrices, but when it comes to the actual implementation I suck at it. Sharpdx has already Matrices and QUaternions implemented. SO no big deal on the map behind it. How in the world would I go about creating a camera? I have seen so many camera examples and still can't make one that works as expected. I would like to implement diferent types too (Orbital, 6DoF, FPS). So what is need for a camera? UP, Forward and Right vectors I read they are needed, also a quaternion for rotations, and View and Projection matrices. I understand that a FPS camera for instance only rotates around the World Y and the Right Axis of the camera. the 6DoF rotates always around their own axis, and the orbital is just translating for set distance and making it look always at a fixed target point. The concepts are there, now implementing this is not trivial for me. Can anyone point me on what am I missing, what I got wrong? I would really enjoy if you could give a tutorial, some piece of code, or just plain explanation of the concepts. Thank you for readin, a frustrated coder.

• Monitor dectecs wrong display mode

  I am running into an issue with 14.04. I have two monitors. the fist one is a 19 inch LG that runs off DVI at 1440x900. It seems to function just fine. The second is a 23 inch LG that should run at 1920x1200. It has been plugged in with both a HDMI to HDMI cable and a DVI to HDMI cable. It seems to be stuck in "I am displaying for a DVD player in 1080p mode" or some such. I had this issue with windows a long long time ago and eventually it just went away. I can set the screen display to 1920x1200 with the generic X drivers but I am a gamer and would like to use the Nvidia drivers since they deliver better performance. When I switch to the Nvidia driver I can set the resolution to 1920x1200 but the screen seems to be up and to the left with a black border down and to the right. If I switch back to the default X driver after this the screen remains stuck in the up and to the left mode. Any help would be wonderful.

• Converting OpenGL coordinates to lower UIView (and UIImagePickerController)

  I am new to OpenGL on the iPhone. I am developing an iPhone app similar to a barcode reader but with an extra OpenGL layer. The bottommost layer is UIImagePickerController, then I use UIView on top and draw a rectangle at certain coordinates on the iPhone screen. So far everything is OK. Then I am trying to draw an OpenGL 3-D model in that rectangle. I am able to load a 3-D model in the iPhone based on this code here - http://iphonedevelopment.blogspot.com/2008/12/start-of-wavefront-obj-file-loader.html I am not able to transform the coordinates of the rectangle into OpenGL coordinates. Appreciate any help. Do I need to use a matrix to translate the currentPosition of the 3-D model so it is drawn within myRect?   I have a Kendo UI Grid that I am currently allowing filtering on multiple columns. I am wondering if there is a an alternative approach removing the outer switch statement? • How to handle notifications to several partial views of the same model?

  I am working on refactoring an old simulation of a Turing machine. The application uses a class that contains the state and the logic of program execution, and several panels to display the tape representation and show the state, messages, and the GUI controls (start, stop, program listing, ...). I would like to refactor it using the MVC architecture that was not used originaly: the Frame is the only way to get access to the different panels and there is also a strong coupling between the "engine" class and the GUI updates in the way of frame.displayPanel.state.setText("halted"); or frame.outputPanel.messages.append("some thing"); It looks to me that I should put the state related code into an observable model class and make the different panels observers. My problem is that the java Observable class only provides a global notification to the Observers, while I would prefer not to refresh every Observers everytime, but only when the part that specificaly observe has changed. I am thinking of implementing myself several vectors of listeners (for the state / position, for the output messages, ...) but I feel like reinventing the wheel. I though also about adding some flags that the observers could check like isNewMessageAvailable(), hasTapeMoved(), etc but it sounds also approximative design. BTW, is it ok to keep the fetch / execute loop into the model or should I move it in another place? We can think in a theorical ideal way as I am completely revamping this small application.

• How to use method hiding (new) with generic constrained class

  I have a container class that has a generic parameter which is constrained to some base class. The type supplied to the generic is a sub of the base class constraint. The sub class uses method hiding (new) to change the behavior of a method from the base class (no, I can't make it virtual as it is not my code). My problem is that the 'new' methods do not get called, the compiler seems to consider the supplied type to be the base class, not the sub, as if I had upcast it to the base. Clearly I am misunderstanding something fundamental here. I thought that the generic where T: xxx was a constraint, not an upcast type. • Create table with PHP and populate from MySQL

  Hi all, I am creating a table to display on a web page and that table is populated from data in a MySQL database. I am trying to do a couple of things that are making it difficult for me. First I am trying to have call the PHP code that exists in a separate file in HTML via JavaScript. I think I have that working right but I am not 100% sure (because the table will not display). I think it is working right because some of the code for the table (which is in the PHP file) displays in FireBug. Second I am trying to make it so the rows alternate colors for easy viewing too. My PHP code so far is below. • Dual Booting WIndows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04

  I have Windows 7 32 bit installed on a 64 bit Laptop. I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 using USB. I created the bootable usb using live usb installer. I have 6 partitions in Windows 7 of which in Windows 7, I created a partition of 50 GB and also having an unallocated space of 50 Gb. I will install Ubuntu 12.04 in any one of these space. When I am booting from USB and selecting the option of "Try Ubuntu" and In Ubuntu desktop, when I click "Install Ubuntu 12.04" , and choosing the option as " Something Else " ( I dont want to Install Ubuntu alongside Windows or want to erase Windows totally ), only 3 paritions getting listed. One is system memory reserved as 100 mb. Second is C drive and third partition is listed as a whole space ie remaining space of the entire hard disk is listed instead of partitions. I tried Gparted Editor and it also lists the same as Ubuntu 12.04 So whats the problem and how can I make the Ubuntu to detect all the partitions so that I can install in the unallocated space or in the 50 GB Partition ? ( P.S - When I try the same in my 32 bit desktop, it is detecting all the partitions )

• How can I guarantee a solvable Fifteen Puzzle shuffle?

  I am making a 15 Puzzle game in C# that allows the user to enter a custom row and column value up to a maximum of a 10 x 10 puzzle. I am having problems with the shuffle method. I want to make it so the puzzle is always solvable by first creating a winning puzzle then shuffling the empty space. The problem is it is too inefficient to call every click event each time. I need a way to invoke the click event of a button adjacent to the empty space but not diagonal. I also use an invisible static button for the empty spot. The PuzzlePiece class inherits from Button. I am not too sure how to do this. • How should VertexBuffers be used with Multiple Monitors in DirectX 9

  I am currently using DirectX 9 on a machine with two GPUs and three monitors. I am currently trying to draw a triangle on each monitor using vertexbuffers; A directx helloworld with multiple monitors if you will. I am familiar with some DirectX coding, but new to multiple monitor DirectX coding. I may be going about this the wrong way, so please do correct me if I'm doing something wrong. I have created a Direct3D Device for each enumerated adapter sharing the same Form handle. This allows me to successfully use all three monitors in full-screen mode.   What does a company need to offer you (apart from a fat pay cheque) for you to work for them? I am aware of this question, which is from an employer's perspective. I am interested in your views as employees. To get the discussion started, here is a list off the top of my head (not in any particular order): High-end computer with a huge screen or two. The best software tool money can buy as per Joel's test). That isn't too much to ask given many of the best tools are free (think git). Flexibility is a bonus- if a particular platform/ piece of software is not absolutely required, I would like to pick my OS and IDE. A quality chair Quiet workspace. Open plan is fine as long as there are meeting rooms so that there is no constant chatter going on around me. Spacious workspace. I would rather have more than three inches between my mouse and the person next to me's keyboard. Food and drink at work. Many companies these days have fruit baskets, biscuits, etc available to their employees, some even offer free lunch. Education. If my employer wants my skills to stay up-to-date, they should at the very least understand I need time to learn. If they want to pay for my books and conference registration fees, I am more than happy to accept. Other options include organizing internal knowledge exchange days or inviting speakers from outside. Flexible hours/ option to work from home is a bonus

• I bought a new battery and Ubuntu 12.10 isn't recognizing it

  I inherited my mom's old laptop and installed Ubuntu over top of Vista, so now it is purely Ubuntu. Her old battery only lasted about 10 minutes, so it had to be plugged in all the time, which I didn't like. So I bought a battery, and inserted it in when it came. The laptop doesn't see it at at all- no battery icon whatsoever. I can pull it out and put the old battery in and it recognizes it. The new battery comes with a program (a .exe) to update the bios to accommodate the new battery... But don't have Windows anymore and Wine gives me an error when I try to run it, so I am at a loss of ideas. I thought of running a virtual machine of Windows to install it, or run a Windows To Go drive(a new feature of Windows 8), but I don't think those are good ideas as they may not work or permanently ruin something. I am not an extremely experienced user of Ubuntu/Linux, so I don't where to go from here. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on a Sony Vaio VGN-NR, if that helps. Also note that I just installed Ubuntu the other day and have nothing important on the pc yet, so I am not afraid to reinstall Ubuntu if it may help. Thanks!

• How can I get the camera to follow a moving object from behind in C++ and openGL [closed]

  I am trying to get the camera to follow an object that moves around my environment using the gluLookAt function. This is my code for the object moving in the direction that it faces: Xtri += -Vtri*cos((90+heading)*(PI/180.0f)); Ztri += Vtri*sin((90+heading)*(PI/180.0f)); I then render the object: glPushMatrix(); glTranslatef(Xtri,0,Ztri); glRotatef(heading,0,1,0); drawTriangle(); glPopMatrix(); All heading is is a spin variable so that if I press left or right it spins in that direction. When you press up on the arrows it moves forward and if you press down it moves backwards in the direction that it is facing. To try and get it so the camera follows I am using the gluLookAt function like this: gluLookAt(Xtri,0,(Ztri+20), Xtri,0,Ztri, 0,1,0); So that it follows the car from a distance and should follow it around. Where is it that I am going wrong? UPDATE: I have updated the gluLookAt function so now it is: gluLookAt((Xtri+Vtri),0,((Ztri+20)), (Xtri+Vtri),0,(Ztri), 0,1,0); This seems to move the object around. I have a stationary terrain so I can see that the object is now moving and in the direction that it is facing. However, I want the camera to follow the object when it spins as well so it is always viewing the object from behind.

  I am using ubuntu 13.10 with Epson wireless scanner/printer/fax WF 2540(It has an automatic document feeder- ADF). What I am trying to achieve is to be able to print with confidence over already populated A4 pages(hand drawn or otherwise). The idea is to get a batch of A4 pages grouped in a particular order and have them batch printed on specific parts of each page ,viewed on screen and edit/processed page by page. My idea was to batch scan the documents in order and display each scanned page to use that to judge/fit on-screen the coordinates for the output of each pages image... • C# calendar needs Business Logic for real-time reminders? [on hold]

  I am not a super experienced C# user, though I have some experience in .Net and VB.Net. Just got this new job and my first assignment is a mission critical part of the business. It is pretty important I get it right so I was hoping for some sage advice. We have created a calendar using jQuery, C#, .Net & SQL Server 08. The calendar works but now we are wanting to add email, SMS and voice-call reminders. We are a small company and can do whatever we need to do with no restrictions on our IT environment. I have some base-line experience with Unix servers but would prefer to stay in the Micro$oft universe if it is prudent to do so. I know how to add the API calls and services to initiate these reminders (using built in email services for email and Twilio.com for SMS). I am asking for advice about how to approach a reliable and timely listener service that knows when to call the service or API for the reminder before an appointment. EG. SMS: "You have a conference call in 30 minutes." I have done some research, but it is hard to know what is a proven reliable approach. What I am looking for is an experienced opinion on a good (or the best) strategy for implementing a solution that will reliably listen for appointments and dispatch the reminders when needed.

• Can't connect to Wireless

  Good day all! I hope you are doing good. I have performed a WUBI installation of 12.04 on my HP G62 laptop, which has an Atheros AR9285 wireless chipset. Everything works fine with my wired network connection. However, wireless is unable to connect to my wifi network. I enter the WPA2 key and then it attemps to connect, but eventually comes back, asking for the WPA2 key again, as if it was not good. All of the other laptops in the household are able to connect, using the same key (I configured them all, so I am 500% sure of the WPA2 key). Any idea as to what could be causing this? I can definitely post the output of CLI commands like "rfkill list" or "sudo lshw -class network", or "ifconfig". I have installed Ubuntu a few time but I am definitely still a newbie, but I am definitely computer savyy. Looking forward to suggestions . Thanks in advance !!! Dan...

• iTunes for Ubuntu Studio

  I have finally gotten my old Mac HDD sorted out, and now I would like to know if anybody has either: a) a way to run iTunes without wine, as it did not work out well for me the last time I tried it, or b) any other media player that will sync with an iPod and, more importantly, use the same file system. When my Mac died, I started to get into open source. I bought a MacBook Air, only out of necessity. For almost two years now, I have not once backed up or synced my iPod. I am getting nervous that it may give up on it's life soon and would like to find a solution. I don't have enough room on my Air, and it would just erase my iPod anyway... Another thing that I am having trouble with is the way iTunes arranged the music. Now, it is arranged all by artist, then album, the song and I would like to have a media library, but somewhere around 400GB of music is a lot to sift through (I have attempted in the past). Thus I am looking for something that will use the same library format. A side note: As I was writing this I started to wonder; Is a Hackintosh in order here? If somebody will give me instructions on how to install MacOSX for free (maybe Mavericks?) in a dual boot with Ubuntu, I will be ever grateful. :) Thanks, soundblastdj

Question: Is there anywhere else i have to include the postgre? While creating GWT project i did not uncheck app engine. is it a problem? can someone tell me what i am doing wrong? • How do I achieve lossless JPEG joining without truncation of partial MCUs?

  I am working on a project for which I need to join thousands of JPEG images losslessly (I'm not talking about the Lossless JPEG/JPEG 2000/JPEG-LS formats here). Aforementioned images have varying levels of chroma subsampling (1x1, 1x2, 2x1, 2x2), resulting in varying MCU sizes (8x8, 8x16, 16x8, 16x16 px). However, in any given set of images to be joined together, each image has identical characteristics. For now, let's assume I only have 2 images. Image #1 (I1) is 256x256px in size and #2 (I2) is 239x256px in size. 2x2 subsampling is used such that MCU size is 16x16px. I2 thus obviously has partial MCUs at the right edge, since its width is not evenly divisible by 16. (I've read that so-called 'partial' MCUs actually contain the data for a complete MCU, but the image dimensions instruct the renderer to only display the relevant pixels and ignore/hide the extra ones.) Looking around for tools that could help me accomplish this, I came across a modified version of JpegTran, that contains an experimental lossless crop 'n' drop (cut & paste) feature. All the other apps I encountered that support lossless JPEG editing seem to utilise IJG's (JpegTran) code, so this seemed to be the logical choice. Also, given the sheer number of images, I wanted something that could preferably be run from the command-line so that I could automate the process with a script. Unfortunately, while everything else worked fine, it seems JpegTran truncates the partial MCUs instead of retaining them. Thus in the example above, the final joined image contains all of I1, but only 224x256px of I2. Why 224? because 239 = 14x16+15, which means there are 14 full MCUs along the width, and 1 partial MCU (just 1px short of the complete 16px). The last 15px is what is getting blanked, leading to a 495x256px image with 15px of blank (grey) pixels at the right edge. See images below (shame that imgur re-compresses them): (left )+ (right) = As you can clearly see, the red portion (15px) of I2 has been truncated by JpegTran. If the MCUs were 8px in width, the lost portion would have been the right-most 7px of I2. Similarly, joining I3 (256x239px) *below * I1 would cause the loss of 7 or 15px, depending on the MCU height of course: (top) + (bottom) = If this is better suited to some other StackExchange (or even non-SE) site/forum where JPEG/image encoding experts hang out, do let me know. Can what I am attempting even be done, or is the so-called 'lossless' JPEG crop 'n' drop only valid for images with no partial MCUs? (Maybe that is why the feature is still in an "experimental state" more than a decade after being introduced...) Until I know for sure that it is impossible, I am not interested in suggestions for lossy joining. Avoiding any generational loss whatsoever is the sole reason why I'm breaking my head over this, else I'd have had this done and dusted ages ago. Also, I am not interested in suggestions related to switching image formats. I do not control the source of the images. If it can be done, how? Please keep in mind that any alternate apps suggested must ideally be capable of automation, given the requirements stated above. (But given how it's unlikely I'm even going to receive a useful answer given the constraints, I would be happy with any app suggestion just as long as it actually works. I can always look into an AutoIT/AHK script or something later to automate it.) I understand that an odd-sized final image might cause issues, so I am fully prepared to accept any solution, even if it results in blank (preferably black) padding pixels to the right/bottom. What I mean is, I don't care if I1 + I2 is 496x256px (1px padding) or even 512x256px (17px padding) in size, as long as the final image contains all the actual image data from both source images, and the entire process is lossless. Obviously the lesser the padding (if any), the better, but at this point any solution will do. A Windows-based solution would be perfect, but a Linux-based one would be entirely acceptable.
