• Unsure how to come up with a good design

  Hello there, I am having trouble coming up with a good design for a group of classes and was hoping that someone could give me some guidance on best practices. I have kept the classes and member functions generic to make the problem simpler. Essentially, I have three classes (lets call them A, B, and C) as follows: class A { ... int GetX( void ) const { return x; }; int GetY( void ) const { return y; }; private: B b; // NOTE: A "has-a" B int x; int y; }; class B { ... void SetZ( int value ) { z = value }; private: int z; C c; // NOTE: B "has-a" C }; class C { private: ... void DoSomething(int x, int y){ ... }; void DoSomethingElse( int z ){ ... }; }; My problem is as follows: Class A uses its member variables "x" and "y" a lot internally. Class B uses its member variable "z" a lot internally. Class B needs to call C::DoSomething(), but C::DoSomething() needs the values of X and Y in class A passed in as arguments. C::DoSomethingElse() is called from say another class (e.g. D), but it needs to invoke SetZ() in class B!. As you can see, it is a bit of a mess as all the classes need information from one another!. Are there any design patterns I can use?. Any ideas would be much appreciated ....

• How to serialize each item in IEnumerable for ajax post

My problem is that I would like to send the entire selected Movie class to the "Add" action but not sure how to serialize each movie since the entire Movie class is not rendered in the PartialView, just a few properties. I know I can serialize something like this... <script type="text/javascript"> var obj = @Html.Raw(Json.Encode(movie)); </script> But I'm not sure how that would work inside a foreach loop that renders html, especially inside a PartialView. So, just to be clear, when a user clicks the "Add Movie" ActionLink I would like to send the serialized Movie class for that respective movie to my controller via ajax. My questions is... Is there a better way to serialize each movie and append it to it's respective anchor? I know there's the data- html5 attribute but I thought they only allow string values, not json objects. I also know I could use jQuery's .data() function but I'm struggling to think through how to get that to run from a PartialView, especially since the html rendered by _MoviePartial.cshtml may be returned from a controller via ajax.

• XSLT apply attribute depending on position

  I am using XSLT for a website based on the 960 grid css framework. I have columns of divs that span across the page if it is the first div in a row it should have a class first applied, if it is the middle one then no class and if it is the 3rd in the row it should have the class last applied. • Trying to create a group of button sprites

  Good day, I have like 15 images I need to be buttons. So I attempted to copy the class style of the box and do the same for my Icons.. code looks like this... class Icons(pygame.sprite.Sprite): def __init__(self): pygame.sprite.Sprite.__init__(self) self.image = pygame.image.load("images/airbrushIC.gif").convert() self.rect = self.image.get_rect() self.rect.x = 25 self.rect.y = 550 the code in the main() rect = image.get_rect() rect.x = 25 rect.y = 550 ic1 = Icons((screen.get_rect().x, screen.get_rect().y)) screen.blit(ic1.image, ic1.rect) pygame.display.update() This code produces a positional (accepts 1 argument but 2 are there) error or an image is not referenced error (inside the Icon class). I'm unsure if this is the right way to go about this anyways.. I know for sure that I need to load all the images (as sprites)... store them in an array... and then have my mouse check if it is clicking one of the items in the array using a for loop. Thanks. • Why are some classes created on the fly and others aren't in CakePHP 1.2.7?

  I have the following model classes: class User extends AppModel { var $name= 'User'; var $belongsTo=array('SellerType' => array('className' => 'SellerType'), 'State' => array('className' => 'State'), 'Country' => array('className' => 'Country'), 'AdvertMethod' => array('className' => 'AdvertMethod'), 'UserType' => array('className' => 'UserType')); var $hasMany = array('UserQuery' => array('className' => 'UserQuery'));} And: class UserQuery extends AppModel { var $name = 'UserQuery'; var $belongsTo = array('User', 'ResidenceType', 'HomeType');} Everything works fine with the user class and all its associations, but the UserQuery class is being completely ignored by the orm (table name user_queries and the generated queries do cast it as UserQuery. Another weird thing is that if I delete the code inside the User class I get an error, but if I do the same for the UserQuery class I get no errors. So my question is why does cakephp generate a class on the fly for the UserQuery and ignores my class, and why doesn't it generate a class on the fly for the User as well ?

• Speed of Synchronization vs Normal

  I have a class which is written for a single thread with no methods being synchronized. class MyClass implements MyInterface{ //interface implementation methods, not synchronized } But we also needed a synchronized version of the class. So we made a wrapper class that implements the same interface but has a constructor that takes an instance of MyClass. Any call to the methods of the synchronized class are delegated to the instance of MyClass. Here is my synchronized class.. class SynchronizedMyClass implements MyInterface{ //the constructor public SynchronizedMyClass(MyInterface i/*this is actually an instance of MyClass*/) //interface implementation methods; all synchronized; all delegated to the MyInterface instance } After all this I ran numerous amounts of test runs with both the classes. The tests involve reading log files and counting URLs in each line. The problem is that the synchronized version of the class is consistently taking less time for the parsing. I am using only one thread for the teste, so there is no chance of deadlocks, race around condition etc etc. Each log file contains more than 5 million lines which means calling the methods more than 5 million times. Can anyone explain why synchronized versiuon of the class migt be taking less time than the normal one?

• my div tag is not aligning properly after jquery.html replacement

However, when I use .html in jquery to change or add text to sched_text it throws the css off and places the div tag not as a block anymore but placed somewhere to the side. Does something change when you use .html text? what would the proper way of doing it? Thanks Ok the issue is that my .html or .text is not a string. I just did .text(the_Week[i][1]); which results in a number. How do I present it as a string?

• destructor being called by subclass

  I'm currently learning more about php objects and constructors/destructors, but i've noticed in my code that the parent class's destructor is being called twice, I thought it was because i was extending the first class to my second class and that the second class was calling it, but this is what the php docs say about that: Like constructors, parent destructors will not be called implicitly by the engine. • Adding up row number and displaying total using COUNT (PHP MySQL)

  I'm attempting to run a query that adds up the total number of subjects in a class. A class has many subjects. There is a 'teachersclasses' table between teachers (the user table) and classes. The principles sounds pretty simple but I'm having some trouble in getting my page to display the number of subjects for each class (directly associated with the teacher) This is what I have so far, trying to make use of the COUNT with a nested SELECT: SELECT (SELECT count(*) FROM subjects WHERE subjects.classid = class.classid) AS total_subjects, class.classname, class.classid FROM class Then I am calling up 'num_subjects' to present the total within a while loop: <?php echo $row['total_subjects']?> From the above, I am receiving the total subjects for a class, but within the same table row (for one class) and my other while loop doesnt run anymore, which returns all of the classes associated with a teacher :( ... Bit of a mess now! I know to return the classes for a particular teacher, I can do an additional WHERE clause on the session of 'teacherid' but I think my query is getting too complicated for me that errors are popping up everywhere. Anyone have a quick fix for this! Thanks very much

• Classes in same package

  I love the Intellij IDEA but i have been stacked on one little problem with Java imports. So for example there is a package with name "example" and two different classes in it: A.java and B.java. And i wanna get access to class "A" from class "B" without imports. Like this: class A: package example; public class A{ ... some stuff here ...} class B: package example; public class B{ public static void main(String[] args){ A myVar = 1234; } } This code may not work, but it's doesn't matter. Trouble just with IDE and with its mechanism of importing classes. So, problem is that i can't see A class from B. Idea says 'Cant resolve symbol' but i actually know that class A exists in package. Next strange is that complier works fine and there are no exceptions. Just IDEA can't see the class in the same package. Does anybody has any ideas?

• Is it a bad practice to use divs for styling purposes?

  I've seen lately a lot of discussions about this new concept called oocss and I was wondering if it is a bad practice to wrap your main tags in divs only for styling/page layout purposes. I'm asking this because I see some frameworks like Twitter Bootstrap use such a method. What are the implications of such a markup from a semantic and accessibility point of view?   I have two classes whose functions take typedefed pointers to eachother as return values and parameters. I.e.: class Segment; class Location : public Fwk::NamedInterface { public: // ===== Class Typedefs ===== typedef Fwk::Ptr<Location const> PtrConst; typedef Fwk::Ptr<Location> Ptr; // ===== Class Typedefs End ===== void segmentIs(Segment::Ptr seg); /* ... */ } and class Location; class Segment : public Fwk::NamedInterface { public: // ===== Class Typedefs ===== typedef Fwk::Ptr<Segment const> PtrConst; typedef Fwk::Ptr<Segment> Ptr; // ===== Class Typedefs End ===== void locationIs(Location::Ptr seg); /* ... */ } This understandably generated linker errors...which the forward declarations of the respective classes don't fix. How can I forward declare the Ptr and PtrConst typedefs while keeping these typedefs internal to the class (i.e. I would like to write Location::Ptr to refer to the location pointer type)?
