• Virtual and Physical Memory / OutOfMemoryException

  Hi, I am working on a 64-bit .Net Windows Service application that essentially loads up a bunch of data for processing. While performing data volume testing, we were able to overwhelm the process and it threw an OutOfMemoryException (I do not have any performance statistics on the process when it failed.) I have a hard time believing that the process requested a chunk of memory that would have exceeded the allowable address space for the process since its running on a 64-bit machine. I do know that the process is running on a machine that is consistently in the neighborhood of 80%-90% physical memory usage. My question is: Can the CLR throw an OutOfMemoryException if the machine is critically low on available physical memory even though the process wouldn't exceed it's allowable amount of virtual memory? • Custom SQL Server driver

  I had a crazy thought about writing my own SQL Server driver to make it work something like non-blocking http client, so it won't be thread thirsty and could handle lots of db queries within one thread. I tried to look over google for some guidelines about implementing SQL Server client protocol, but found none really, where do those guys get information about it when they write own implementations for PHP or python? I need a really low level to be documented so I can implement all phases of working with a connection through sockets. And would be really nice to have a an example in c# language. :)

  I need low-latency audio in my project, and I know Android 2.3 supports OpenSL ES. I have read documents and sample code and I decide to use Android simple buffer queue to do the play and record. I now try to write a simple application to do the test. However, I have some questions about recording. If I set the recorder stop when it is recording, how do I know the exact number of bytes filled in the last buffer if it is not filled up ? In 1.1 version, the callback function has some parameters about buffer and its filled data, but there is no such parameters in version 1.0.1. Is there any way to get this information ? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated !

I used the following code but sometimes it gives me ArithmaticOverflow exception due to the negative number in Low 32-bit values. I am not sure enclosing the body with unchecked will serve the purpose or not. • How to schedule a cron job to backup a MySql database every week?

  What is a command line I can use to back up a MySql database every single week into a file name with the date (so that it doesn't collide with previous backups)? Also, is this a reasonable backup strategy? My database is relatively small (a complete export is only 3.2 megs right now). The churn rate is relatively low. I need to be able to get the complete DB back if something goes wrong. And it would be extra cool if there's a way that I could see the changes that occur across a time span.

  Hey guys Just wondering what you'd suggest as the best platform for developing a business application for a tablet device. The application needs to be multitouch, have access to a maps API, a database on the device. It will not be going on sale in the app store or Androids market, it is purely for specific business task and not for the general consumer. Obviously the options seem to be iPhone OS and the iPad or Android and an Android tablet device. The form factor for the end product requires something in the region of 8 inch+ screen and enough processing power to provide a good experience for the end user. Any help would be much appreciated. • Creating standalone, console (shell) for domain-specific operations

  Say that I have a system service, and I want to offer a low-level maintenance access to it. For that purpose, I'd like to create a standalone, console application that somehow connects to server process and lets user type in commands, allow it to use auto-completion and auto-suggestion on single/double TAB press (just like linux bash shell, mysql cli, cmd.exe, and countless others), allow command line editing capabilities (history, cursor keys to move around text..), etc. Now, it's not that much of a problem to create something like that by rolling my own from scratch, handling user input, scanning pressed keys, and doing correct actions. But, why reinvent the wheel? Is there some library/framework that helps with this kind of problems, just like readline library that offers improved command-line editing capabilities under linux? Of course, this new "shell" would respond only to valid, domain-specific commands, and would suggest valid arguments, options, switches... Any ideas? Thanks!

  I'm trying to get basic skills in working with bits using C#.NET. I posted an example yesterday with a simple problem that needs bit manipulation which led me to the fact that there are two main approaches - using bitwise operators or using .NET abstractions such as BitArray (Please let me know if there are more build-in tools for working with bits other than BitArray in .NET and how to find more info for them if there are?). I understand that bitwise operators work faster but using BitArray is something much more easier for me, but one thing I really try to avoid is learning bad practices. Even though my personal preferences are for the .NET abstraction(s) I want to know which i actually better to learn and use in a real program. Thinking about it I'm tempted to think that .NET abstractions are not that bad at, after all there must be reason to be there and maybe being a beginner it's more natural to learn the abstraction and later on improve my skills with low level operations, but this is just random thoughts.

I would like to know if it is possible to extract the different function call through function pointer (find the caller function and the callee function) in a program. I could find the kind of information in the website so it would be really helpful if you could tell me if such an library already exist in LLVM or can you point me to the good direction on how to build it myself (existing source code, reference, tutorial, example...). EDIT: With my analysis I actually want to extract caller/callee function call.   I am working on something that needed custom drag-and-drop functionality, so I have been subclassing View, doing a bunch of math in response to touch events, and then rendering everything manually through code on the canvas in onDraw. Now, the more functionality I add, the more the code is growing out of control and I find myself writing a ton more code than I would expect to write in a high level environment like Android. Is this how it's done, or am I missing something? If I'm not doing anything fancy in the UI, the framework handles the majority of my interactions. Built-in controls handle the touches and drags, and my code is pretty much limited to business logic and data. Is there a way to leverage the power of some of the UI controls and things like animations while also doing some of it manually in the onDraw canvas? Is there an accepted standard of when to use one or the other (if indeed the two approaches can be mixed)?

  I have a game built in a java environment and I use JVM. I have 4 cores @ 2.4Ghz and my server is only using one of those cores... I've tried and searched and I still have no guides to setup multiple cores to run the game like, say 1 core for running the character saving + loading, and 1 core for the server itself, and 1 core for a helper to help other cores that need more power.   Regardless of if this is a good idea or not, is it possible to detect printer attributes from the browser? The idea is that you want to print out a brochure that's selling something. Depending on different things such as if the printer is black&white/colour, high/low resolution, laser/inkjet, printing to a file, etc, you want to print out the page differently. For example you might choose different text colours or fonts, different image sizes, etc. My initial thoughts are: ActiveX, Flash, Java, Silverlight, browser plugins. • How to estimate memory need by XPathDocument for a specific xml file

  Is there any way to estimate the memory requirement for creating an XpathDocument instance based on the file size of the xml? XpathDocument xdoc = new XpathDocument(xmlfile); Is there any way to programmatically stop the process of creating the XpathDocument if memory drops to a very low level? Since it loads the entire xml into memory, it would be nice to know ahead of time if the xml is too big. What I have found is that when I create a new XpathDocument with a big xml file, an outofmemory exception is never fired, but that the process slows to a crawl, only 5 Mb of memory remains a available and the Task Manager reports it is not responding. This happened with a 266 Mb xml file when there was 584 Mb of ram. I was able to load a 150 Mb file with no problems in 18. After loading the xml, I want to do xpath queries using an XpathNavigator and an XpathNodeIterator. I am using .net 2.0, xp sp3.
