• Why might someone say R is *NOT* a programming language? [closed]

  I came by the following comment today on twitter "R is not a programming language, it's a statistics package with the GUI missing." And I am wondering - Why not? What is "missing" in R to make it a "programming language" ? Update: For the protocol, I am a big fan of R, use it daily, and support it's existence. I now changed the name of this thread from "Why is R NOT a programming language?" to "Why might someone say R is NOT a programming language?" Which better reflects my motivation for this thread (which is, to know if R has any programmatical disadvantages that I might have not heard about).

• Android – multiple custom versions of the same app

  Whats the best way to deploy several customized versions of a Android application? Currently I have a script to exchange the resource folder for getting a customized version of my app. It works great, but all custom versions still have the same package name in the AndroidManifest.xml. Therefore it is not possible to install two customized versions of the app at the same time. This is one solution for this problem, but that has to be done by hand Can you think of a more easy solution, or how this could be built into a skript? (btw: it is not for a porn/spam/whatever app, not even a paid one)

• Is there any disadvantage to putting API code into a JAR along with the classes?

  In Java if you package the source code (.java) files into the jar along with classes (.class) most IDE's like eclipse will show the javadoc comments for code completion. IIRC there are few open-source projects that do this like JMock. Lets say I have cleanly separated my API code from implementation code so that I have something like myproject-api.jar and myproject-impl.jar is there any reason why I should not put the source code in my myproject-api.jar ? Because of Performance? Size? Why don't other projects do this?

My problem is, i have copied the .class file into other directory with the necessary jar files need to create this excel sheet, for example my .class is inside "pack" package. c:/myprogram/pack/excelprogram.class to d:/myprogram /pack/excelprogram.class /jxl.jar /ojdbc14.jar if i run the program javac pack.excelprogram it display below error Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: jxl.format.CellFormat i have dependency jar file(jxl.jar) for this excel sheet creation.Error is displaying from that only. i have set class path for this jar file like set classpath="%classpath%";d:/myprogram/jxl.jar;d:/myprogram/ojdbc14.jar;.; even though i'm getting the same error. Please help ASAP.

  I have an anonymous pl/sql block with a procedure declared inside of it as well as a cursor. If I declare the procedure before the cursor it fails. Is there a requirement that cursors be declared prior to procedures? What other rules are there for order of declaration in a pl/sql block? • Return Integer value from SSIS execute SQL Task

  I am using SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Studio and struggling with returning an integer value from a very simple execute SQL Task. For a very simple test, I wrote the SQL Statement as: Select 35 As 'TotalRecords' Then, I specified ResultSet as ResultName = TotalRecords and VariableName = User::TotalRecords When I execute this, the statement is executed but the variable doesn't have the updated value. However, it has the default value that I specified while variable definition. The return of a date variable works, but integer variable isn't working. The type of User::TotalRecords specified is Int32 in a package scope. Thanks for any hints

• Maven: use dependencies from repository when running command line app ?

  Hi, I've used Maven to build my command line application. Now I'm going to distribute it as a jar file, and I need to handle the app's dependencies. I don't want to include all dependencies in the jar file as described here. The environment where my app will be run has Maven. I'd like Maven to run my jar looking at file META-INF/groupId/artifactId/pom.xml inside the package so it knows what the dependencies are and can find them in the repository. Any ideas ?

  Hi, I'm running jEdit with the JythonInterprete and I have a .jar file called JavaTest.jar. JavaTest has a class called SampleJavaClass which has a method printerCount. From my .py file, I want to do: from javatest import SampleJavaClass class SampleClass(SampleJavaClass): def pymain(self): SampleJavaClass.printerCount(4) Java code: package javatest; public class SampleJavaClass { public static void printerCount(int i){ for(int j=0; j< i; j++){ System.out.println("hello world"); } } (etc...) • Enclosing multiple LaTeX documents

  I am not sure if this question is suitable for superuser instead, but I'll ask anyway. Currently I'm writing on my documentation for my final project. I must append several other LaTeX documents as enclosure. They must be mentioned in the first Table of Contents as alphabetical appendix. I tried the package subfiles, but the subsequent TOC´s are always empty exept in case of translating them alone. Is there any other way to append multiple full documents with there own documentclass??

• C++ packing a typedef enum

  typedef enum BeNeLux { BELGIUM, NETHERLANDS, LUXEMBURG } _PACKAGE_ BeNeLux; When I try to compile this with C++ Compiler, I am getting errors, but it seems to work fine with a C compiler. So here's the question. Is it possible to pack an enum in C++, or can someone see why I would get the error? The error is: "semicolon missing after declaration of BeNeLux". I know, after checking and rechecking, that there definitely is a semicolon there, and in any places required in the rest of the code.

• Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect()

  I have installed WAMP. I am using Tomcat 6 to run my PHP scripts. I am also using JavaBridge.war and I have copied my php scripts into \webapp\JavaBridge\project. I have removed the semicolon from php.ini file before the statements extension=php_mysqli.dll extension=php_mysql.dll I have added C:\wamp\bin into my PATH env variable. I have copied all dll's from C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\ext into C:\windows\system32 I am still getting this error. Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect() in C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\project\pf_query.php on line 534 Note - I dont get this error when I run my PHP script from Apache 2.2.11 of the WAMP package.

• Business web application platform structure

  Hi, I would like to develop a web application in java/spring/hibernate serving as a business platform that I could connect plugins to (i.e. CRM plugin, ware plugin, sales plugin). Those plugins could be dependent of other plugins in a tree manner. The parent project would be packaged as war having all the basic configuration and looks (spring configs, css, scripts), ready to go user and group management, security settings, etc. All together I would like it to behave and look a bit like Joomla, but built using different tools for different purposes. And I have a few questions concerning that project: Do you know of any open source projects offering such a platform ready to go? If not is maven applicable for managing those plugins? What is the best way to package and deploy those plugins? And the last but not least, basically is this the right way to go or is a dead end and it would be better to create a separate web app for those business needs?

  I am using the twang package to create propensity scores, which are used as weigtings in a binomial glm using survey::svyglm. The code looks something like this: pscore <- ps(ppci ~ var1+var2+.........., data=dt....) dt$w <- get.weights(pscore, stop.method="es.mean") design.ps <- svydesign(ids=~1, weights=~w, data=dt,) glm1 <- svyglm(m30 ~ ppci, design=design.ps,family=binomial) This produces the following warning: Warning message: In eval(expr, envir, enclos) : non-integer #successes in a binomial glm!   Let's say I have this structure of my Java Web Application: TheProject -- [Web Pages] -- -- abc.txt -- -- index.jsp -- [Source Packages] -- -- [wservices] -- -- -- WS.java WS.java is my Web Service, which is situated in a wservices package. Now from this service, I need to access the abc.txt file and write to it. These are my urls: http://127.0.0.1:8080/TheProject/WS <- the webservice http://127.0.0.1:8080/TheProject/abc.txt <- the file I want to access To read the file, I tried with getResourceAsStream and I was successful in reading from it. But now I also want to write to this file, and I tried such a method but failed. Is there a way I can get access to the abc.txt file from WS.java and be able to successfully read from and write to it?

In the output csv file, I need to display the address in a single cell with data separated by a new line. I tried using a cursor and appending data using chr(10), chr(12), chr(15) but in vain. • C/C++: Scanning a TIFF file using LIBTIFF

  My problem is to scan a tiff image in C and get all the pixel value (let's say for saving them in a txt file) in C/C++. I scanned the web and i found a library named "TIFFLIB" that should do what i was looking for. I downloaded it using the ubuntu package manager, but the gcc doesn't recognize the library. How do i link the library to the compiler? Have I installed it correctly? Is there any better/easier way to do that?
