• Why won't my code segfault on Windows 7?

  This is an unusual question to ask but here goes: In my code, I accidentally dereference NULL somewhere. But instead of the application crashing with a segfault, it seems to stop execution of the current function and just return control back to the UI. This makes debugging difficult because I would normally like to be alerted to the crash so I can attach a debugger. What could be causing this? Specifically, my code is an ODBC Driver (ie. a DLL). My test application is ODBC Test (odbct32w.exe) which allows me to explicitly call the ODBC API functions in my DLL. When I call one of the functions which has a known segfault, instead of crashing the application, ODBC Test simply returns control to the UI without printing the result of the function call. I can then call any function in my driver again. I do know that technically the application calls the ODBC driver manager which loads and calls the functions in my driver. But that is beside the point as my segfault (or whatever is happening) causes the driver manager function to not return either (as evidenced by the application not printing a result). One of my co-workers with a similar machine experiences this same problem while another does not but we have not been able to determine any specific differences.

  So I have PHP script running on cron daily. It is suppose to check the date and send an email if it is 7 days before any payments as a reminder. I haven't used PHP in a long time so sorry if the way I did it was ridiculous or something. Thanks a lot. • Is fetching data from database a get-method thing?

  I have a small class that I call Viewer. This class is supposed to view the proper layout of each page or something like that... I have a method called getFirstPage, when called the user of this method will get a setting value for which page is currently set as the first page. The problem is that then I have to use this get method to set the private variable firstPage. It seems like I should have a set method to do this, but I cannot really have a set method that just fetch some setting from database, right? Because the user of this object should be able to assume that there already is a setting defined in the object... How should I do that?

  Trying to learn about php's arrays today. I have a set of arrays like this: $a = array ( 0 => array ( 'value' => 'America', ), 1 => array ( 'value' => 'England', ), 2 => array ( 'value' => 'Australia', ), ) $b = array ( 0 => array ( 'value' => 'America', ), 1 => array ( 'value' => 'England', ), 2 => array ( 'value' => 'Canada', ), ) I need to get the 'new' subarrays that array b brings to the table. ie, I need to return array ( 'value' => 'Canada', ) I thought I could first merge $a+$b and then compare the result to $a. $merge = array_merge($a,$b); $result = array_diff($merge,$a); But somehow that does not work. It returns array() How come? And thanks!

• How can I write output to a new external file with Perl?

  Maybe I am searching with the wrong keywords or this is a very basic question but I cannot find the answer to my question. I am having trouble writing the result of my whois command to a new external file. My code is below. It takes $readfilename, which is a file name which has a list of IPs, and $writefilename, which is the destination file for output. Both are user-specified. For my tests, $readfilename contains three IP addresses on three separate lines so there should be three separate whois results in the user specified output file. if ($readfilename) { open (my $inputfile, "<", $readfilename) || die "\n Cannot open the specified file. I have no idea how half of my file is ending up binary... but my approach must be incorrect. Is there a better way to achieve the same result?

In CountryController, I'm retrieving a list of countries from a CountryService that uses the $resource object. This works fine, but I want to be able to share the list of countries with the ClientController. After some research, I read that I should use the CountryService to store the data and inject that service into both controllers.   I made the following test for my class: var mock = new Mock<IRandomNumberGenerator>(); mock.Setup(framework => framework.Generate(0, 50)) .Returns(7.0); var rnac = new RandomNumberAverageCounter(mock.Object, 1, 100); rnac.Run(); double result = rnac.GetAverage(); Assert.AreEqual(result, 7.0, 0.1); The problem here was that I changed my mind about what range of values Generate(int min, int max) would use. So in Mock.Setup() I defined the range as from 0 to 50 while later I actually called the Generate() method with a range from 1 to 100. I ran the test and it failed. I know that that is what it's supposed to happen but I was left wondering if isn't there a way to launch an exception or throw in a message when trying to run the method with wrong params. Also, if I want to run this Generate() method 10 times with different values (let's say, from 1 to 10), will I have to make 10 mock setups or something, or is there a special method for it? • Querying for a unique value based on the aggregate of another value while grouping on a third value

  So I know this problem isn't a new one, but I'm trying to wrap my head around it and understand the best way to deal with scenarios like this. Say I have a hypothetical table 'X' that looks like this: GroupID ID (identity) SomeDateTime -------------------------------------------- 1 1000 1/1/01 1 1001 2/2/02 1 1002 3/3/03 2 1003 4/4/04 2 1004 5/5/05 I want to query it so the result set looks like this: ---------------------------------------- 1 1002 3/3/03 2 1004 5/5/05 Basically what I want is the MAX SomeDateTime value grouped by my GroupID column. The kicker is that I DON'T want to group by the ID column, I just want to know the 'ID' that corresponds to the MAX SomeDateTime. I know one pseudo-solution would be: ;WITH X1 as ( SELECT MAX(SomeDateTime) as SomeDateTime, GroupID FROM X GROUP BY GroupID ) SELECT X1.SomeDateTime, X1.GroupID, X2.ID FROM X1 INNER JOIN X as X2 ON X.DateTime = X2.DateTime But this doesn't solve the fact that a DateTime might not be unique. And it seems sloppy to join on a DateTime like that. Another pseudo-solution could be: SELECT X.GroupID, MAX(X.ID) as ID, MAX(X.SomeDateTime) as SomeDateTime FROM X GROUP BY X.GroupID But there are no guarantees that ID will actually match the row that SomeDateTime comes from. A third less useful option might be: SELECT TOP 1 X.GroupID, X.ID, X.SomeDateTime FROM X WHERE X.GroupID = 1 ORDER BY X.SomeDateTime DESC But obviously that only works with a single, known, GroupID. I want to be able to join this result set on GroupID and/or ID. Does anyone know of any clever solutions? Any good uses of windowing functions? Thanks!

  The subject is probably too short to explain it... I'm writing out XML files with no namespace stuff at all, for some application. That part I cannot change. But now I'm going to extend those files with my own application-defined element names, and I'd like to put them in a different namespace. For this, the result should look like this: <doc xmlns:x="urn:my-app-uri"> <a>existing element name</a> <x:addon>my additional element name</x:addon> </doc> I've used an XmlNamespaceManager and added my URI with the prefix "x" to it. I've also passed it to each CreateElement for my additional element names. But the nearest I can get is this: <doc> <a>existing element name</a> <addon xmlns="urn:my-app-uri">my additional element name</addon> </doc> Or maybe also <x:addon xmlns:x="urn:my-app-uri">my additional element name</x:addon> So the point is that my URI is written to every single of my additional elements, and no common prefix is written to the document element where I'd like to have it. How can I get the above XML result with .NET?

• JQuery 1.3.1 doesn't find dynamically generated rows

  I have just installed in the ASP.NET MVC RC2 and with that also using the JQuery 1.3.1 library. Before I was using the 1.2.6 library. Our application works fine under that library. But now I have strange problem. We have a grid view that we build up with the result of an AJAX call. With the result returned we add new rows to a table through cloning a hidden row. The generated HTML from the JQuery is placing extra parameters to the tags. These are in the form of JQuery12345678="null". They all have the same name. In the head of the table there is a checkbox that selects/unselects all the rows of the table. This by iterating through the rows of the table. $("#selectAllCheckbox").click(function() { var checked = this.checked; $("#dgNewTasks tbody tr").find(':input[type="checkbox"]').each(function() { this.checked = checked; }); }); Now by using the new library the check box are no longer set. I have used IE Developer Tools to check the HTML. If I remove the JQuery12345678="null" parameter from my rows. It works fine. Could someone tell me what I have to do?

I tried doing a group by, but if I group by Opt1, Opt2, Opt3, this doesn't work because it returns the highest count for each (ID Num, Opt2, Opt3, Opt4) combination which is not what I want. If I only group by ID Num, I can get the max for each ID Num but I lose the information as to which (Opt1, Opt2, Opt3) combination gives this count. I feel like I've done this before, but I don't often work with sql and I can't remember how. Is there an easy way to do this?

  I have set up my function for checking for a number in a String, and printing out that String if it has no numbers, and putting up an error message if it does.   I'm trying to make an AJAX GET request, but I simply cannot get it to work. I want to retrieve the HTML source of example.com. I've previously used JQuery to send AJAX requests, but I use JQuery only for its AJAX capabilities so it's a waste to include the 30KB file for one task. • click event working in Chrome but error in Firefox and IE

  I am writing a messaging system with jquery. When you click on a thread title with the class '.open_message', It opens a thread with all the messages for that thread via Ajax. My issue is that when the thread title is clicked it is not recognizing the id attribute for that specific thread title in firefox and IE. It works fine in chrome, though.   I want to sanitize html tags from my wysiwyg. I want to replace certain tags with another. This almost works only the replaceWith() is also removing the content from within the tags. I dont want to do this. I just want to replace the tags. Here is what I have so far. • Better variant of getting the output dinamically-allocated array from the function?

  Here is to variants. First: int n = 42; int* some_function(int* input) { int* result = new int[n]; // some code return result; } void main() { int* input = new int[n]; int* output = some_function(input); delete[] input; delete[] output; } Here the function returns the memory, allocated inside the function. Second variant: int n = 42; void some_function(int* input, int* output) { // some code } void main() { int* input = new int[n]; int* output = new int[n]; some_function(input, output); delete[] input; delete[] output; } Here the memory is allocated outside the function. Now I use the first variant. But I now that many built-in c++ functions use the second variant. The first variant is more comfortable (in my opinion). But the second one also has some advantages (you allocate and delete memory in the same block). Maybe it's a silly question but what variant is better and why?

  Hi, I have a <ul> which refreshes every ten seconds to check if there have been any new tweets (its pulling from a twitter feed). This works fine in Firefox and Chrome etc, but it does not work in any version if Internet Explorer. • Why could "insert (...) values (...)" not insert a new row?

  Hi, I have a simple SQL insert statement of the form: insert into MyTable (...) values (...) It is used repeatedly to insert rows and usually works as expected. It inserts exactly 1 row to MyTable, which is also the value returned by the Delphi statement AffectedRows:= myInsertADOQuery.ExecSQL. After some time there was a temporary network connectivity problem. As a result, other threads of the same application perceived EOleExceptions (Connection failure, -2147467259 = unspecified error). Later, the network connection was reestablished, these threads reconnected and were fine. The thread responsible for executing the insert statement described above, however, did not perceive the connectivity problems (No exceptions) - probably it was simply not executed while the network was down. But after the network connectivity problems myInsertADOQuery.ExecSQL always returned 0 and no rows were inserted to MyTable anymore. After a restart of the application the insert statement worked again as expected. For SQL Server, is there any defined case where an insert statment like the one above would not insert a row and return 0 as the number of affected rows? Primary key is an autogenerated GUID. There are no unique or check constraints (which should result in an exception anyway rather than not inserting a row). Are there any known ADO bugs (Provider=SQLOLEDB.1)? Any other explanations for this behaviour? Thanks, Nang.
