• Replace, not merge, folders when copying

  In Windows Vista, when I try to move a folder to replace an existing folder, Vista asks me if I want to merge the folders or cancel. How do I get the old XP behavior where the old folder is just replaced. This issue is especially challenging when moving many folders at once and some of them move but then some of them hit this merge/cancel problem. Thanks!

The date-time should also be stored when i enter text. is it possible EDIT: I will explain clearly what i exactly want.   This question relates to my ACER laptop running Windows VISTA. Currently when I close the lid of my laptop the laptop does not power down, however when I open the lid it does. When looking at the power settings it is set to power down when closing the lid. The trigger to this seems to be the lid being opened not being closed. I seem to recall this behaviour changing when I installed Windows Media centre. Any ideas on how I can get the power down to work on the lid closing. thanks

• "Safely Remove Hardware" icon keeps reverting to "Only show notifications"

  I have the 'Safely Remove Hardware' tray icon set to 'Show icon and notifications' to save a mouse click when removing a USB device but every few weeks the setting reverts to 'Only show notifications'. Does anyone know what causes this and/or how I can prevent it? I'm using Windows 7 SP1 64bit with a fairly bare installation (the machine hosts a set of virtual machines that I use to do my work). • How to batch rename files copied from OSX to Windows with ':' in filenames?

  This is really puzzling. I have lots of videos that were stored using Mac OS, and now I have to edit them on Windows XP. I copied files using HFSExplorer. Editing software refuses to open the files with their current names, and so far I have not found a way to batch rename all the files. Names of the files look like this: clip-2009-10-01 21;26;00.mov But I suspect in OSX the time was 21:26:00. I would like to replace the space with an underscore, and semicolons with dash. I've tried several bulk rename applications, with ; and :, but in vain. Also I've tried rename.pl, but also in vain.

• Intranet Ip - Access from Custom Domain

  I have setup a local intranet in my office using IIS7 (Windows 7 Machine), currently it can be accessed through the PC's static IP, however I would like it so that internally it can just be accessed through an easier method, e.g typing in http://intranet (or something similar). There are over 60 PC's int he office, so individually updating Host files on the PC's is not really ideal. We don't need it to be accessible from the outside world (I.e, we don't care/want it to be an Extranet). Any tips?

  We are looking for a great commercial or free tool which can monitor all our remote employees and keep the reports centrally. We need it similar to Elance WorkView or oDesk "Team Room", what these tools do is: Take screenshots at random interval. Track the activity on computer based on key strokes. (not a necessity) It doesn't necessarily need to track time but will be good to have, our aim is to monitor employees and make sure they're working - that's all. • Shared configuration for Eclipse on Debian server

  I've manually installed the latest Eclipse on our debian server and wanted to configure it so all users share the same configuration. It turned out less obvious than I thought: I don't seem to be able to install packages for all users. If I run it myself, all configuration data is saved under my own home directory. If I run Eclipse using sudo, everything is saved under the root directory but is not accessible for other users when they run Eclipse. I've been browsing the manual of Eclipse and some forums, but apart from a "yes, you can" I couldn't find any information on how that should be done. The biggest problem is installing plugins for all users to be found. Any help is greatly appreciated. Eclipse : 3.6.1 classic, installed using this procedure. Server uname: GNU/Linux * 2.6.26-2-amd64 Server is accessed using Putty, and Gnome desktop through realVNC. Just mentioning it if that is of any importance. Our sysadmin is on "prolonged leave" (working in Spain and never replaced), so I'm stuck without help here. EDIT : -- I asked this question also on StackOverflow as I wasn't certain this is a genuine server-related question. Please feel free to merge both questions at the appropriate place. --

  I've been using Download Master on Windows for years and what I liked most about it is that this program can automatically put downloaded files into directories by download date: /Downloads | |--/2012_06_28 | | | |--a.zip | |--b.pdf | ... | |--/2012_06_29 | | | |--c.txt | ... ... I'm looking for something similar for Linux. Is there any free download manager that can do this? I have tried KGet and uGet but they both seem to lack this feature.   Some OEM include energy saving apps that can switch off certain devices such as webcam or optical drive. Is there any brand-agnostic app out there that can do it? If the list of disabled device is customizable, it would be useful too for mitigating DMA attack (disabling Firewire, PCMCIA, SDIO, Thunderbolt, etc). Even better if it can recognize lock/logoff event, to mimic OSX behavior in mitigating the DMA attack.

  Windows 7 has the full and basic aero themes that can be changed inside personalization. Windows used to automatically disable Windows Aero (transparency) when I unplug my laptop from the mains. I reset the theme and now it doesn't do this anymore. I can't seem to find how to enable this again.   Why do they have different names for the same command, listing a directory? Surely, they could have talked to each other and agreed on one common name, such as for example cd which is the same for both unix and dos. This decision to have different names has created many headaches for developers and users and also increased incompatibility between the two systems. Did they do it on purpose? Then how come "cd" is the same?

• How to upgrade a single instance's size without downtime

  I'm afraid there may not be a way to do this since we're not load balancing, but I'd like to know if there is any way to upgrade an EC2 EBS backed instance to a larger size without downtime. First of all, we have everything on one instance: both our app and our database (mongodb). This is along the lines i'm thinking: I know you can create snapshots of your EBS and an AMI of your instance. We already have an AMI and we create hourly snapshots. If I spin up a new separate instance of a larger size and then implement (not sure what the right term is here) the snapshots so that our database is up to date, then I could switch the A record of our domain from the old ip address to the new one. However, I'm afraid that after copying over the data from the snapshot, by the time it takes to change the A record and have that change propagate, the data could potentially be stale. Is there a way to prevent this, and is there a better way to do this than I am suggesting?
