• How to fix error 1330 (invalid digital signature) when installing "The Rosetta Stone"

  I bought an older version of this software from a friend and the Rosetta Stone support hasn't been of much use. When installing, at the end of the process I get an error from the installer that says something along the lines of: Error 1330. A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file [file.cab] has an invalid digital signature. This isn't the first time I've had such an error, some time ago I was unable to install a game I bought because of the same thing. I extracted the cab file itself just to see what it was and it's just an archive of icons and things like that, so it's not even like I'm missing out on much :/ Any advice/tips on how to work around this error would be appreciated e.g. if it's possible to make the installer ignore digital signatures. • Why does display:table-cell not center content without display:table?

  I'm looking for the most efficient (or elegant) way to vertically and horizontally center content of variable height. I've come up with this: http://cssdeck.com/t/2veysdkg/16, which uses css tables to vertically center the main content. My demands for writing this particular piece of code were: Must be able to center variable and fixed width content vertically and horizontally Centered content must be inside the normal document flow (so no overlapping) Sticky footer and normal header of 100% width As few hacks, ugly code or non-semantic html as possible I didn't care about support for IE6, IE7 (I'll use a different stylesheet for them) The weird thing is that the demands above are only met when the header and footer are set to table-row, and the body-tag to display:table. Which is weird because as I understand it the css will generate anonymous table elements when parent table elements are missing. So table-cell should work without all the surrounding elements, but yet I've not been able to make it work. If it were up to me I would prefer to not mess with the display mode for the body tag, and leave the header and footer on display:block. But I've not been able to make it work. Does anyone understand why this doesn't work?

• IE "About:Tab" page hijacked

  Hey folks, Client o' mine, running Windows 7 64-bit, installed Kiwee Toolbar and then uninstalled it. The software is pretty much gone except for one last thing: The About:Tab IE page redirects to a Kiwee search page. I have temporarily disabled the "New Tab" page via Internet Explorer's options, but it annoys me. I have scanned with multiple tools. Spyware Doctor purports to removed it, but they want money to remove it. I would buy it -if- I could be certain it would fix the problem. I've also searched the registry and the filesystem for instances of the program, plus I've removed Kiwee manually via the many manual uninstalls out there. IE's AboutURLs registry entry still points to res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm and if I enter that URL into IE, the correct New Tab page comes up. Any help appreciated.

• How to review code that you do not understand?

  I have been given the role to improve development in our company. The first thing I wanted to start was code reviews since that has never been done here before. There are 3 programmers in our company. I am a web programmer, my known languages are mainly PHP, ActionScript and JavaScript. The other 2 developers write internal applications in VB.net We have been doing code reviews for a couple weeks now. I find it hard to understand VB code. So when they say what its doing, for the most part I just have to take their word for it. If I do see something that looks wrong, I explain my opinion and I explain how I would address it in one of the languages I know. Sometimes my suggestions are welcomed but many times I am told things like "this is the best way of doing it in this language" or "that doesn't apply to this language" or similar things of that nature. This may be true, but without knowing the language I am not sure how to confirm or refute these claims. I know one possible solution would be to learn vb so I can do better code reviews. I really have no interest in learning vb (especially since I have a list of other technologies I am trying to learn for my own projects) and would like to keep this as a last resort but it is an option. Another idea that came to me is, they both have interest in C# and so do I. Its relative to them because its .net and relative to me because its more similar to the languages I know. Yet it is new to all of us. I thought about the benefits of us all collaborating on a pet C#.net project and reviewing each others code from that. I guess theres also the possibility hiring a consultant to come in and give us some code reviews. What would you recommend I do in this situation.

• Setting up Splunk/IronPort WSA

  I recently stumbled across Splunk 4 (by way of an advert on this very site...) and found that it had an "App" that's designed to work with Cisco IronPort WebSecurity and E-Mail Appliances! That's really awesome, because good IronPort reporting is something our IT-dept. is looking for. Anyways - I'm totally lost on how to configure this thing. I've googled like a mad-man to find a guide or such like - but I haven't found anything. Has anyone here set up IP / Splunk? Any tips/pointers?

• Black screen on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm experiencing some problems. The first thing I noticed is that when I click the Workspace switcher all I get is a black screen (I can guess where the different workspaces are located and clicked on them, not a practical solution though). In addition when I lock the screen or suspend the laptop (a Vaio VPCEB4M1E) I get a shifted screen (I see the right most vertical stripe on the left size of the monitor and nothing about all the rest, to put it clearly I can see the gear that allows me to turn the pc off, etc, but not much more..) when I go to the additional driver menu I see the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" are installed and the post-release update version is available. I don't know if the problem is driver related, so before doing anything I'd like to get some suggestions from you guys. Thanks you!

• BizTalk 2009 - BizTalk Server Best Practice Analyser

  The BizTalk Server Best Practices Analyser  allows you to carry out a configuration level verification of your BizTalk installation, evaluating the deployed configuration but not modifying or tuning anything that it finds. The Best Practices Analyser uses "reading and reporting" to gather data from different sources, such as: Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes SQL Server databases Registry entries When I first ran the analyser I got a number of errors, if you get any errors these should all be acted upon to resolve them, you should then run the scan again and see if any thing else is reported that needs acting upon. As you can see in the image above, the initial issue that jumped out to me was that the SQL Server Agent was not started. The reasons for this was absent mindedness - this run was against my development PC and I don't have SQL/BizTalk actively running unless I am using them.  Starting the agent service and running the scan again gave me the following results: This resolved most of the issues for me, but next major issue to look at was that there was no tracking host running.  You can also see that I was still getting an error with two of the SQL jobs.  The problem here was that I had not yet configured these two SQL jobs.  Configuring the backup and purge jobs and then starting the tracking host before running the scan again gave: This had cleared all the critical issues, but I did stil have a number of warnings.  For example on this report I was warned that the BizTalk Message box is hosted on the BizTalk Server.  While this is known to be less than ideal, it is as I expected on my development environment where I have installed Visual Studio, SQL and BizTalk on my laptop and I was happy to ignore this and other similar warnings. In your case you should take a look at any warnings you receive and decide what you want to do about each of them in turn.

• The visual effects in Windows 7 turns off after reboot.

  I have Windows 7 64-bit Professional on my PC. When using English language, the visual effects are turned on. When I use Telugu LIP (India), the visual effects are turned off every time I reboot my PC. When I say visual effects, I don't mean the aero effects. The maximize and minimize effects are not felt. The effects don't show up though the check boxes are checked. Find the image showing the check boxes are checked but the effects not being showed up p. UPDATE: I recreated the account and now the effects are restored properly. UPDATE: Yes it is. This is a standard account. The surprising thing is,the check boxes are checked but still no animations. Once I make the apply button enable, the animations show up again.

Here's an interesting piece from David Linthicum on eBizq: In the world of SOA, the concept of SOA governance is getting a lot of attention. However, how SOA governance is defined and implemented really depends on the SOA governance vendor who just left the building within most enterprises. Indeed, confusion is a huge issue when considering SOA governance, and the core issues are more about the fundamentals of people and processes, and not about the technology. SOA governance is a concept used for activities related to exercising control over services in an SOA, including tracking the services, monitoring the service, and controlling changes made to the services, simple put. The trouble comes in when SOA governance vendors attempt to define SOA governance around their technology, all with different approaches to SOA governance. Thus, it's important that those building SOAs within the enterprise take a step back and understand what really need to support the concept of SOA governance. The value of SOA governance is pretty simple. Since services make up the foundation of an SOA, and are at their essence the behavior and information from existing systems externalized, it's critical to make sure that those accessing, creating, and changing services do so using a well controlled and orderly mechanism. Those of you, who already have governance in place, typically around enterprise architecture efforts, will be happy to know that SOA governance does not replace those processes, but becomes a mechanism within the larger enterprise governance concept. People and processes are first thing on the list to get under control before you begin to toss technology at this problem. • Essential roles for web application team

  Some friends of mine came up with an idea for a web application which we (so far) think could be great. I made the analysis and all the early stages of the development process and I'm about to start the coding. I'm talking about something that is barely a mid-level project, so I consider one developer (myself) should be enough. The thing is that we are trying to assign roles to each one of us so we can be focused on our duties and have clear our responsibilities within the team. We are a crew of four people, three of us (my friends) are business people who would do the marketing, customer relationship, management and accounting stuff and I'm basically the developer. I have in mind to get them involved into the development process by giving them documentation to write and use them as testers, all of that besides the management duties they have. Perhaps someone out there have been in the same situation, so I would appreciate if the experience is shared so we can effectively give ourselves positions in the project based on what I explained above. Which are the essential roles or the optimal team layout so the idea can be developed successfully? The question is not strictly about programming, but it's related to build a software entrepreneurship beyond the code, that is something that I'm sure plenty of us are looking. • Is MS Forefront Add-in for Exchange server detecting HTML/Redirector.C incorrectly?

  Users of a website hosted by our organization occasionally send complaints that our registration confirmation emails are infected with HTML/Redirector.C. They are always using an MS Exchange Server with the MS Forefront for Exchange AV add-in. The thing is, I don't think the detection is legitimate. I think the issue is that the link in the email we send causes a redirect. I should point out that this is done for a legitimate purpose. :) Has anybody run into this before? Naturally, Microsoft provides absolutely no good information on this one: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Trojan%3aHTML%2fRedirector.C&ThreatID=-2147358338 I can't find any other explanation of HTML/Redirector.C on the Internet either. • What is the 64-bit Firefox Beta PPA?

  I recently discovered that my computer is 64-bit. I have backed up my Home folder, and reinstalled Ubuntu. The reinstall wasn't nearly as painful as I thought. There is one thing that I can't quite seem to figure out: how do I get the 64-bit Firefox Beta build? I always get the Beta builds, but I want to take advantage of the 64-bit architecture of my computer. this page says that Mozilla has come out with a 64-bit version of Firefox, but I can't seem to find it. I do understand the ramifications of using a 64-bit browser, but I've decided to jump right in and do it anyway. (Flash and Java are already 64-bit, and who cares about Silverlight, since it's not for Linux anyway?) There's only one issue, and it's a big one: I can't find the 64-bit Beta PPA!!! (I really hate using .tar.gz files, but I'd be willing to do that as long as I could still access Firefox via the Launcher. Oh, speaking of which, I don't understand .tar.gz files. Once, I managed to run one (the Dropbox Beta build,) but I have no idea whatsoever on how to install them: as in, click on the icon and go.)

• Microsoft FTP fails to connect after the client requests the list of features (FEAT)

  This is a really weird problem. The first few times I try to connect Filezilla just hangs on the line 211-Extended features supported: for a while before coming up and saying Error: Could not connect to server. The filezilla log below: Command: PASS *********** Response: 230 User logged in. Command: FEAT Response: 211-Extended features supported: Error: Could not connect to server The weird thing is if I keep trying to connect eventually it just works and connects fine. After Filezilla knows which features the server supports it stops asking for a while which enables you to connect first time until Filezilla decides it wants to double check the features list again. I'm at a loss on how to debug this. Has anyone experienced similar?

• Apache configuration for silent rewrite of query strings like codeigniter

  Codeigniter rewrites query strings like the following: http://somedomain.com/index.php?q=something to become: http://somedomain.com/index.php/q/something I'd like to imitate this behavior on a (very) lightweight website I am developing for a wedding RSVP system. I don't want the bloat of codeigniter, nor do I need anything else that it provides. The only thing I'd like is this. Unfortunately, I don't know how to setup a mod-rewrite rule that accomplishes this. I can setup a rule that translates /q/something into ?q=something, but I can't get one that does that without changing the URL the user is viewing. I'm basically looking for something that is, in effect, a "silent" version of the rewrite. That is, I want something that rewrites q/something to ?q=something, but leaves the user's URL in their address bar as q/something. Thanks in advance!

• Quick access to program shortcut

  I need to edit a text file on my computer that requires admin access (hosts). I used to do this by hitting WIN and typing "Note". The shortcut for Notepad would show up, and I could right-click and choose Run as Administrator. How do I accomplish the same thing in Windows 8? Notepad isn't something I see pinned to my start menu, and I don't really want to clutter up my menu with something I may use infrequently. I want very quick access to my programs by typing a few letters in the name. If I use WIN-R, I have to know exactly the name of the executable. I want to just type Glob and see options for Sonic Global VPN. And I want to be able to execute that found executable as an admin if I need to. Windows Vista & Windows 7 are excellent at this. Surely this functionality has not been deprecated in Windows 8...

• RemoteApp Security Warning

  I have a Windows 2012 Standard x64 RemoteApps RDWeb portal where I can launch apps. We have one remote app in particular which is RDP (mstsc.exe). Whenever a user launches it, they receive three different prompts--the second one is this alert (shown below). How can I get rid of this alert? I have other RemoteApps launching as well, and they do not throw errors or alerts like this one. And they are applications with the .exe extension, so I do not understand what is so unique about the RDP RemoteApp that would cause this alert. One thing perhaps worth mentioning is this particular RDP remote app points directly to the mstsc.exe executable residing on a particular session host/terminal server (as shown in the "From" value of the warning). As such, a gateway server would not be used to load-balance and choose the RDP client launched from a session host at random. This RDP RemoteApp is explicitly associated with one particular terminal server.

• Using TortoiseHg's Repository explorer

  Hi, I'm coming from a TortoiseSVN background and decided to give TortoiseHg a try.. One thing I got really used to with TortoiseSVN was the SVN Repo-Explorer, which worked quite similarly to Windows Explorer.. However, when I tried to use TortoiseHg's Repository Explorer, what I got was something else, it was more like TortoiseSVN's Show Log. It showed me what the recent commits were and what files were changed and even had nifty graphs.. However, I'm still left wanting for TortoiseSVN's Repo-Explorer.. Does TortoiseHg have anything like this? How am I supposed to poke around the Repository if I can only view changed stuff? Thanks, kreb

• Storing multipe credentials for the same server.

  I have a need to connect to the same exchange server with multiple accounts. I'm using Extra Outlook to simultaneously load different profiles connecting to each account. Here's a simplified example of the accounts I need to use: log in to test.local.domain user1: [email protected] user2: [email protected] user3: [email protected] I am always being prompted for passwords when opening an Outlook instance. Essentialy only the last username/password combination for each server is stored by Vista. So if I launch Outlook with the same profile I used last, before starting launching using a profile for a different account, I'm not prompted for authentication. Aternatively, adding a new entry in Vista's Stored User Names and Passwords dialog with credentials for user2, when there is alraedy an entry for user1 on the same target server will replace the existing user1 entry with the new user 2 entry. I'm guessing the same thing is going on silently behind the scenes when I provide Outlook credentials. How can I configure Vista's credential management to store credentials for multiple users on the same server?

• sound volume increase beyond 100% whenever possible on linux

  Some audio output from files or streams is too low. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value. If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer) thank you

• TCP/IP- what is it exactly?

  I know that this question sounds stupid, but over all these years, I still have difficulty explaining TCP/IP to people. I don't completely get it myself, and even after reading up on it, the distinction is not very clear. What I get so far is that IP deals with networks while TCP involves delivery of messages over that network. I'm not totally convinced though. Also, they reside on different layers of the Internet architecture. Could anyone disambiguate this distinction using a simple analogy or examples? Also, I read this somewhere The difference is that TCP is responsible for the data delivery of a packet and IP is responsible for the logical addressing. In other words, IP obtains the address and TCP guarantees delivery of data to that address. Is this correct? Thanks for helping me out. One last thing- Where does the ethernet come in all of this?

• Samba 3.3 or later on Slackware 12 - how do I make this happen?

  I'm trying to upgrade the Samba server on a Slackware 12 box to serve as PDC for Windows 7 32bit machines (it now has a 3.0.3 and does the job for Win XP machines, but 7 refuses to join the domain - I'm posting this after having tried a few dozen hacks on the windows registry). I'm a newbie on Slackware (I usually dwell in Ubuntu) so I may be going about this the wrong way but this is what I've done so far: The Samba wiki has a couple of hacks for the registry and also seems to suggest a version later than 3.3 (though not in so many words) http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows7 Having scoured the net for later Samba binaries for Slackware 12 and gotten precisely nowhere, I decided that maybe I could compile the blessed thing. But I keep on getting compiler errors. I'm using this SlackBuild script http://ftp.twaren.net/Linux/slackware/slackware-current/source/n/samba/samba.SlackBuild Is there a better way to make this happen? (without upgrading the base system? it has so many finely tuned things running that I don't want to mess with the rest of the setup).

• I split partition in Windows 7 home edition but the Windows doesn't reboot

  I Have Geniune Windows 7 home edition and my Laptop is Pavilion HP DV6 . I had only 1 partition of 500+ GB i Wanted to make another partition. I read somewhere in forum that I have to make my C: logical and then I'd be able to split C: I did the same thing using Partition Wizard. I made C: of 125 GB and shift rest of the space in New drive. I made a bootable disk, performed all the task using partition Wizard After that I have not been able to boot my windows. Even after running system restore several times.

• Virtualbox, Virtual guest OS issue

  Hi, My host OS is: Ubuntu 10.10. One of my virtual OS is: Ubuntu 9.04 and another one is: Ubuntu 10.04. All of these virtualisation has been completed with Virtualbox. Now, I need to replicate those two servers, one server is running in Ubuntu 9.04 and another one is running in Ubuntu 10.04. Is it possible? If yes, can you please provide me some help? So, in short words, the whole thing is: Host: Ubuntu 10.10 Guest 1: Ubuntu 9.04 Guest 2: Ubuntu 10.04 Job: Must have to run two guests at a time. Because, two LDAP of two guests need to replicate. Now, If I try to get the first Guest ( hostname: mohib-laptop ) from second Guest ( hostname: zaman-laptop ), it is not getting! Do I need to change IP address of those both Guests? Or are there anything which will make it possible?
