• Problem with Skype in Snow Leopard

  Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard I have always had problems with Skype. When I start a video chat, Skype tells me that my camera is not installed on the machine (even though it clearly is). After searching the internet I have found some 'solutions' but none of them work. After trying them, it makes my camera feed appear as a blank, green image. How can I get Skype to function with the built in iSight with Snow Leopard properly? is there any body else face this problem?

• secure synchronization of large amount of data

  I need to automatically mirror a large amount (terabytes) of files in two unix machines over a slow link (1 Mbps). This needs to be done frequently, but the data doesn't change too much (delta transmission doesn't saturate the link). The usual solution would be rsync, but there's an additional requirement: it's undesirable, from a security standpoint, that either the source or destination machines have (keyless) ssh keys to each other, or any kind of filesystem access. All communication between the two machines should thus be initialized (and mediated) through a third machine. I've asked a separate question about rsync in particular here. Are there other obvious solutions I'm missing?

• How to access an SD card from a virtual machine?

  I want to format an SD card from my Linux virtual machine. I have a built-in SD card reader in my laptop. I tried using VirtualBox and VMware Player and installed Ubuntu 10.04 guest. None of them are showing the SD card reader as a device. I can access the SD card from the Windows host. I am not interested in solutions using shared folders as I want to access the SD card as hardware (it should show up in /dev). I basically want to set up the SD card for BeagleBoard, but I don't want to install physical Ubuntu in my PC.

• How to add the Windows defender into Windows Explorer's right click menu to scan a particular drive/folder/file on demand?

  There is no option in Windows Explorer to scan a particular drive (or file) on demand by right clicking on it in Windows Explorer as we had in Windows 7 with Microsoft Security Essentials or like other antivirus solutions. I know we can run a custom scan for the particular drive or specific folder but that process is too lengthy and time consuming. The guide How to Add a "Windows Defender" Cascading Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8 explains how we can add Windows Defender in the desktop right click menu, so I'm curious, is there a way to add it in the Windows Explorer right click menu to launch a search whenever I need to?

• USB microphone very quiet in Windows 7 64bit [migrated]

  My microphone input is very quiet. I record my voice and the recording comes out very faint. I can barely see the level indicator move when I'm 4 inches away, only when I'm 0.5 inches away does it pick up well enough. • Alternative to SecondCopy?

  Hello I've been using SecondCopy (7.0.0.146) on XP for a few years now to copy important files from one hard-disk to another. One thing that bothers me is that it is unable to copy some files that are open. I assume Windows provides an API that allows an application to put an exclusive lock on an open file and backup utilities like SecondCopy just can't access them until they are closed. As a result, since I have to close a bunch of files/applications for SecondCopy to complete successfully, I typically don't run SecondCopy regularly like I should... which pretty much beats the whole purpose of backing up data :-/ For those of you using a similar solution to back up your important file onto a second mass storage solution... Can you confirm that an open file can be set off-limit with an exclusive lock, and no backup solution will work with those? If you've tried SecondCopy and other solutions recently and you ended up using another solution, which one did you choose and why? Thank you for any feedback.

• What could cause the keypad backlights to spontaneously illuminate on my Palm Treo? [closed]

  I have a Palm Treo 680 smart phone. I have noticed recently that when the phone is turned off, the keypad backlights will spontaneously illuminate. This is particularly annoying because it drains the battery life of the Treo -- when I woke up this morning, the battery was completely flat and I had to plug it in to wake it up again. I suspect that this has something to do with the Energy Dimmer application (I have version 2.16 installed). I have disabled this application today to see if it makes the problem go away. Has anyone else had this problem, and do you have any solutions?

• Is there a free-embedded SSH solution ?

  Hi, I'm working for an important company which has some severe network policies. I'd like to connect from my work, to my home linux server (mainly because it allows me to monitor my home-automated installation, but that's off-topic) but of course, any ssh connection (tcp port 22) to an external site is blocked. While I understand why this is done (to avoid ssh tunnels I guess), I really need to have some access to my box. (Well, "need" might be exagerated, but that would be nice ;) Do you know any web-based solution that I could install on my home linux server that would give me some pseudo-terminal (served using https) embedded in a web page ? I'm not necessarily looking for something graphical: a simple web-embedded ssh console would do the trick. Or do you guys see any other solution that wouldn't compromise network security ? • App pool gets stuck on reset and takes .net pages out

  Several times after our app pool has been told to reset, it gets stuck, the .net pages go down and the following error appears in the application event log: Failed to execute request because the App-Domain could not be created. Error: 0x80070057 The parameter is incorrect. Our app pool is scheduled to automatically reset at 4am, so the errors stay up until we manually restart the app pool. Has anyone else encountered the error or know of any solutions? Research has suggested it's a permissions issue, but the permissions don't change and the error happens infrequently. The site has no other permission based problems and the app pool identity has permission where needed.

  Hello. I have a batch of MP3 based books. Some of them divide into files according to book's own structure: chapters and so on. Some of them was just divided into equally lengthened parts. So. I've bought an iPhone, and I want to convert them all to M4B format. How could I convert them in a batch? I mean how cold I set up a process once, for each book, and then, after couple of weeks, receive totally converted library. The only able program for such conversion I've found was Audiobook Builder for a Mac. But it is pretty slow and do not support batching in principle. Solutions for any platform, please.

  When i deploy anything to a variety of sharepoint servers i get problems with some packages failing, from what i can see the only error given is as below. The timer job for this operation has been created, but it will fail because the administrative service for this server is not enabled. If the timer job is sched uled to run at a later time, you can run the jobs all at once using stsadm.exe - o execadmsvcjobs. To avoid this problem in the future, enable the Windows ShareP oint Services administrative service, or run your operation through the STSADM.e xe command line utility. Is this a known problem? I googled for the text but got only one other person with the problem who simply worked round it. I'm trying to batch deploy solutions programmatically and so these errors render the whole code worthless if you have to go back and redo bits by hand afterwards. Is batch deployment simply not possible? Thanks!

• Skipping hardlinks when using TSM Backup

  We need to backup a filesystem with lots of hardlinks. Since there are several hardlinks for each "true" file, we would like to skip all the hardlinks when backing up the filesystem to avoid n exact copies of each file. The backup is done using Tivoli Storage Manager Backup, and we've been unable to get it to treat hardlinks as anything other than separate files to be backed up alongside each other. In case it's relevant for possible solutions, I'd like to note that it's possible to tell a hardlink from a proper file by the filename: foobarbaz-123.ext # file foobarbaz-123-1.ext # hardlink foobarbaz-123-2.ext # hardlink barbazfoo-456.ext # file barbazfoo-456-1.ext # hardlink barbazfoo-456-2.ext # hardlink barbazfoo-456-3.ext # hardlink That is, all hardlinks have two hyphens in the filename, where as proper files have just the one. The server is running Ubuntu Linux, and the files are situated on a gfs volume on our SAN.

Before I formated my computer I used both WAMP and XAMPP for specific purposes. I took the following steps: Logged into vCenter Right-clicked on my HA cluster and chose "Edit Settings..." Clicked "vSphere HA" section Clicked "Advanced Options..." Added the "das.ignoreRedundantNetWarning" option with a value of "true". Question How do I get this error to go away, and are there any reasons why adding this option may not have worked? • Export SharePoint Wiki to PDF from the Command Line

  We use a SharePoint wiki* at the office to serve as a knowledgebase for our IT operations. Recently we went through a disaster recovery exercise where we realized we had a key hole in our plans: how do you restore the services if your instruction manual is down because some services are offline? Anyhow, we did realize that the wiki angle was definitely something we wanted to keep, but rather that we should explore a way to create offline backups of the wiki which could be easily read using common software we should be able to setup without any knowledge from the wiki. So, does anyone know of a good utility that can take a SharePoint wiki and dump it to PDF/Word/RTF/[INSERT HUMAN FRIENDLY FORMAT] easily from the command line? *-Yes, there are better solutions out there. But this was easy and used existing infrastructure and generally does what we need it to do.

  My school requires a proxy for all internet access. If you want to use the internet, it is impossible to not use a proxy. This makes it a problem for many programs that don't seem to let you enter proxy settings. How can I use Steam when I am behind a proxy? Is it possible to somehow enter the details into a configuration file, or force it to get the settings from Internet Explorer? If not, does software exist for creating a 'virtual' network adapter which will pass all traffic (or all protocol x traffic) through the proxy? Although I am facing this specific problem on Windows 7, solutions for all operating systems are welcome.

  I'm getting the above mentioned error when backing up with ZRM, which is using mysqldump for backup. mysqldump --opt --extended-insert --single-transaction --create-options --default-character-set=utf8 --user=" " -p --all-databases "/nfs/backup/mysql01/dailyrun/20091216043001/backup.sql" mysqldump: Error 2020: Got packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes when dumping table TICKET_ATTACHMENT at row: 2286 I have increased the size for 'max_allowed_packet' to be 1G in /etc/my.cnf which is the server setting and for the client side setting I've set it by running this command: mysql -u -p --max_allowed_packet=1G And I have verified that on the client and server side they are of the same value. • Software to store my password on a crypted file and access it through another password

  I'm looking for a software that allows me to store some passwords in something like "a text file", access it through a password, read my passwords if required and close it again. I want something really straightforward, double click on file, right click "Add new password", add password, description and close. The file must be really secure, I'll store all my passwords there.   On windows, when I plugged in the usb connector, to the device was recognized as a mass storage device and installed all the drivers, to my computer, then the device, automatically restarted and started behaving like a modem, I'm writing this post, using the same modem, through windows... On linux mint (debian kernel, similar to ubuntu 8.10), the device is recognized as a mass storage device, some times, but, has no programs, useful for linux... When I use the modem on windows and restart the computer and login to linux, the device shows up as "not yet configured" in the terminal command "lsusb"... I googled a lot for solutions, tried many things, atlast, configured it and run the command "wvdial". But, get the error, that the modem is not responding, at last ! :'( Please help me out... Many more people are facing this problem, as I could discover, when I googled for it. this is the website address of huawei, the company of my modem... • Mutli-processor workstation as a workstation/server

  I work in a research institute and a number of programs we use are computationally intensive (I actually wrote one of them). Right now we have one computer that is dedicated for one of these programs (with local accounts only, as in users physically sitting in front of that pc) and the other programs are run on individual workstations assigned to people. I have been looking around to common brands such as Dell and HP, for a some sort of a small/medium scale server, which can be used as a workhorse by sending tasks remotely. It appears as if there is nothing in between workstations with one 6-core processor and a bunch of extras (like fancy graphics etc) and rack mount servers with ridiculous amount of RAM and HDD expansion capabilities but still relatively little number of processors/cores. I wonder if what I am looking for is such a small niche product? Are there other solutions that I might not be aware of? Does anyone know of a multi proc- multi-core workstation/server that is still within the reasonable

• What is your favorite password storage tool?

  Aside from personal passwords, I'm always juggling a number of project-specific passwords, including those for network, web and database authentication. Some authentication can be managed with ssh keys and the like, but everywhere I've worked I also faced the need for the management of passwords that need to be available to a number of different people. So what do you use, either for personal or team-based password management? Personally I'd like to hear about cross-platform tools, but I'm sure other people would be satisfied with Windows-only solutions. I know the stackoverflow podcast tackled this issue in #7 and #9, but I'm hoping we can come up with the definitive answer here. Update: Even though this question was asked before its sibling site existed, you should probably add your two cents to the more active question over at superuser, which is a more appropriate venue for this.
