• VC++ to C# migration guidelines/approaches/Issues

  Hi all, We are planning to move few of our VC++ Legacy products to C# with .NET platform.. I am in the process of collecting the relavent information before making the proposal to give optimistic and effective approach to clients. Am looking for the following details. Any general guidelines in migration of VC++ to C#.NET What are the issues that a team can face when we take up this activity Are there any existing approaches available ? I believe many might have tried but may not have detailed information, but consolidating this under this would help not only me but anyone who look for these information. Any good / valid resources available on internet? Any suggestions from Microsoft team if any Microsoft people in this group? • Are there predifined styles for making arrow buttons in windows phone 7?

• Preventing the "[YourProgramName] has stopped working" dialog on unhandled exceptions.

  I have a WinForm application, with some dependencies on an external library that can on occasion cause an exception outside of the running threads context. As it stands now, this is completely OK behavior ( well, except of course the exception ) and we wired up AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException to simply restart the program. The only problem is, the [Your Program] has stopped working like the one below, appears: Is there a way to prevent this dialog from appearing at all, be it in the AppDomain unhandled exception handler or in a config setting, as no end users are going to be reading it and it just holds up resources until it is clicked.

• J2ME polish problems when running on the phones

  I built an application with j2me polish,it works well on emulator but after installing on phones, I have some basic problems: At first why the size of application is big(in my case 1.5 mb),is there any way to decrease polish apps size(my resources are just 300 kb). For installing it on the phone, I copy the jar file from dist folder; Is my way correct? Important!:arabic words in some SonyEricsson phones are seprated and reversed, I searched the web, but I just found some topics about LWUIT and I coulden't solve it on polish!

  I want to change the content of a tab? when tha tab is created i set the content of the tab by setContent() method. But if I click again, I want to change the content that means change to another activity. I used setOnTabChangedListener() method, but I am not sure about how to set the content to another intent?   I'm still new to JPA (and Hibernate, which I'm using as my provider), so maybe this just can't be done, but anyway... Consider the following code: @Entity class Root { @Id private long id; private String name; @ElementCollection private Map<ResourceType, Resource> resources; ... } @Entity class ResourceType { @Id private long id; private String name; } @Embeddable class Resource { private ResourceType resourceType; private long value; } In the database, there is a collection table, 'Root_resources', that stores the values of the map, but the resource type appears twice (actually, the resource type ID does), once as the KEY of the map, and once as part of the value. Is there a way, similar to, say, the @MapKey annotation, to indicate that the key is one of the columns of the value (i.e. embedded)?

  Hi there! I'm using Jersey in a REST project and I'm needing to use regular expression. Digging about it is simple like: @Path("/resources) public class MyResource { @GET @Path("{subResources:.*}/bar") public String get() {...} } But, I'm only capable of using regex if in my @Path contains a variable or text value, example: @Path("{SubResource1}/{subResources:.*}/bar") Or @Path("hardCodeString/{subResources:.*}/bar") Today I could run with this solution of a variable, but is not oK for my perspective. Question Does anyone have worked with something related? I'm doing something wrong? I think that this could be a bug, when working with more then one @Path, one in the Class and other in the Method. Any tips is appreciated! Regards

• Host unavailable when user is logged off

  I am facing a problem that I discovered while I was implementing a small client/host application. The client side runs Windows 7 64-bit and machine never turns off but user is automatically logged off after 30 minutes of inactivity. When user is automatically logged off the host becomes unreachable, first I thought the problem was isolated to my application, but after som investigation I discoverd that resources and vnc server is also unavailable. The question might be a bit off limit for this forum but I can't find any reasonable explanation somewhere else. Does anyone know how I can keep user being logged off automatically but with the host still reachable on the network?

• Querying a smalldatetime's date and time seperately in SQL server?

  Imagine a table that has two fields, a smalltimedate and an int and about 1000 rows of data. What I'm attempting to do in query is to find the average of the INT field for rows between 3/3/2010 - 3/13/2010 and only if the entry is between 6:00am - 11:00pm. I tried between '2010-03-03 06:00 AND 2010-03-13 23:00' However that only restricts that very beginning and end times. I could do this with a loop but I'm going to need to have the same query run over much larger date ranges and this will quickly eat server resources. Is there a way to query date and time seperately?

• C#: Resource file refactoring

  Does anyone know of a good tool for refactoring resources in a visual studio 2008 solution? We have a number of resource files with translated text in an assembly used for localizing our application. But they have gotten a bit messy... I would like to rename some of the keys, and move some of them into other resource files. And I would like those changes be done in my code, and the translated versions of the resource files as well. Maybe a some analysis on what strings are missing in the translated versions, and what strings have been removed from the original as well... Does anyone know of a good visual studio extension or ReSharper plugin that can help me with this? Right now it is kind of a pain, because I have to first rename the key in the base resource file, then in the localized versions. And then compile to get all the compile errors resulting from the key which now have a different name, and then go through and fix them all... very annoying =/

  I come across code such as "personObj=new Object();" where a new object called personObj is being defined. What I'm trying to find out is whether Object() is a prefined function in javascript, because I understand by using the mentioned code, a instance of a class is being formed but in the example code where I'm studying from, the class Object() is not being defined anywhere, so I was wondering if Object() was a predefined function in javascript and whether I can be directed to some online resources, as all that shows up in google when I try to find Object() are articles in general javascript object oriented programming.

• Low-overhead way to access the memory space of a traced process?

  Hello all. I'm looking for an efficient way to access(for both read and write operations) the memory space of my ptraced child process. The size of blocks being accessed may vary from several bytes up to several megabytes in size, so using the ptrace call with PTRACE_PEEKDATA and PTRACE_POKEDATA which read only one word at a time and switch context every time they're called seems like a pointless waste of resources. The only one alternative solution I could find, though, was the /proc/<pid>/mem file, but it has long since been made read only. Is there any other (relatively simple) way to do that job? The ideal solution would be to somehow share the address space of my child process with its parent and then use the simple memcpy call to copy data I need in both directions, but I have no clues how to do it and where to begin. Any ideas?

  hi, My needs are very simple: I have a Tip table to receive comments and have comments to receive comments, too. To retrieve each comment that is stored in the same table (comments), I created another key for the comments on comments: "inverse_comments". I tried to use one comments table by using self-referntial association. Some resources seem to bring more than one table into the piture which are diffent from my needs. So I came up whth the following modeling for comments: class Comment < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :tip belongs_to :user has_many :mycomments, :through => :inverse_comments, :source => :comment end Apparently something is missing here but I cannot figure it out. Could some one enlighten me on this: what changes I need to do to make the model work? thanks.

• Is object clearing/array deallocation really necessary in VB6/VBA (Pros/Cons?)

  Hello, A lot of what I have learned about VB I learned from using Static Code Analysis (Particularly Aivosto's Project Analyzer). And one one of things it checks for is whether or not you cleared all objects and arrays. I used to just do this blindly because PA said so. But now that I know a little bit more about the way VB releases resources, it seems to me that these things should be happening automatically. Is this a legacy feature from pre VB6, or is there a reason why you should explicitly set objects back to nothing and use Erase on arrays?

  I'm looking for a team building / training activity for some of my scrum teams. I want something that really illustrates the flexibility that the team has when implementing stories to define the scope and complexity of the feature themselves. Most of the teams have long-term waterfall experience and are used to having a well-defined specification. I'm looking for something that illustrates the need for the team to vary the scope of what they are building themselves, dependent on the time and resources available. I couldn't find anything at tastycupcakes.com and Google wasn't much help. Maybe someone has prepared something themselves they would care to share?

• WhatsApp - writing a clone (iphone, android, wp7)

  I am trying to create a instant messaging app very much like whatsapp I suppose. My resources I have available to me are Server development in C# (REST Service, dedicated server app etc) And currently an android development platform using eclipse (iphone, wp7 to follow later). I have done some development in Android before but I don't have any idea where to start an application like this. My guess would be it would work with UDP / TCP or similar ? I currently have a shared server for an asp.net website but I presume this wouldn't be ideal, I could essential setup a web service on the server and get a client to publish his messages there but then this would mean that the receivers would have to POLL (PULL) every 5 minutes or so - so I guess this wouldn't be real time Do I need to use UDP here ? And I presume platforms like Iphone, Android and WP7 will not have any issues sending msgs by UDP - if that is how its done. I look forward to any help or guidance.

• How to implement a tiered "selection tree" in Swing? (Or: is there an existing implementation?)

  I need a Swing component that will let me display a tree-structured list of items, and allow the user to select or de-select an arbitrary subset of those items, with the ability to select or deselect an entire subtree's worth of components by picking that subtree's parent. (Basically, something similar to the Eclipse "Export JAR file's" dialog (an image of the relevant dialog is here - I basically want the "Select resources to export" component, but for a Swing application.) I know I can do this by creating a custom TreeCellRenderer, a custom TreeCellEditor, and a custom TreeModel - but that seems like an awful lot of work. Are there any good off-the-shelf implementations that I can use? Thanks!

• Detecting when Javascript is performing poorly

  I'm working on a webapp in jquery that, on older machines or machines without much resources, may perform poorly. To get around this I'd like to make a degraded version that disables some of the features, particularly those that rely on large images. How can I tell if my app is running poorly on the user's computer in jquery or javascript in general? I just need a way to call a function that will degrade the app. (especially when the user may run low on system memory) The only way I can think of is for manual user intervention, but the option would add clutter for users that don't need it and users that do need it may not notice it.   I have a table that holds user information. One of the columns holds the position of the user in the game they are in. When a game is being created, I need to update the positions of the users of each team. Here is an example: Game id : 7 Team 1 users : 1,2 Team 2 users : 3,4 team1_position : array(1,2) team2_position : array(13,14) What I want to do is update the user table using the array of positions in the SET area. My goal is to be able to update the users without the need for their id (I have different size game boards, so I have multiple position arrays for each board size) How can I do something like this: UPDATE user SET position='(team1_position)' WHERE game = '7' AND team = '1' I feel like it would be a waste of resources to select all the id's of each team and update them separately.

Upon doing so though I get the error Missing } in XML expression on the line that uses dropdownhtml. Here is my code var dropdownhtml = '<div id="dropdown"></div>'; $(document).ready(function(){ //$(document).append(dropdownhtml); alert(dropdownhtml); }); The XHTML webpage that includes this file does so like this: <script type="text/javascript" src="/web/resources/js/dropdownmenu.js"></script> Doing either append or alert throws up the same error, what is going wrong?

  I want to program graphical 2D games more complex than the basic 2D stuff I already know. I don't want to do 3D programming. Just more complex 2D stuff. I dropped high school before I could learn a lot of stuff so I walked away with enough algebra knowledge to balance my checkbook and do some light 2D Cartesian programming. • Default http/admin port in dropwizard project

  I have a dropwizard project and I have maintained a config.yml file at the ROOT of the project (basically at the same level as pom.xml). Here I have specified the HTTP port to be used as follows: http: port:9090 adminPort:9091 I have the following code in my TestService.java file public class TestService extends Service<TestConfiguration> { @Override public void initialize(Bootstrap<TestConfiguration> bootstrap) { bootstrap.setName("test"); } @Override public void run(TestConfiguration config, Environment env) throws Exception { // initialize some resources here.. } public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { new TestService().run(new String[] { "server" }); } } I expect the config.yml file to be used to determine the HTTP port. However the app always seems to start with the default ports 8080 and 8081. Also note that I am running this from eclipse. Any insights as to what am I doing wrong here ?
