• How does bundler work (in general)?

  Hello, I'm pretty new to Ruby/Rails but I was taking a look at bundler and was wondering how it works exactly. Do you install a full set of gems like normal gem install XYZand then use the Gemfile to pull a certain subset of those gems for use with a specific application? Or do you not install gems normally anymore and just include them in the Gemfile and then do a bundle install to include them all in a bundle that is then used with your application? • Calling a COM+ Component remotely using C#

  Hello, I have a little COM+ component as a service on a remote server. I´m trying to execute a method of this component using: Type type = Type.GetTypeFromProgID("ComPlusTest.ComTestClass",serverName); // Create Service Object service = Activator.CreateInstance(type); // Execute Method String result = service.GetType().InvokeMember("LaunchPackage", BindingFlags.InvokeMethod, null, parameters, null).ToString(); The type is returned as null. What is the best way to do this?? The server is Windows 2003 Enterprise, the service is a .NET component wraped as COM+ (I know that I don´t have to do it that way, but the purpose is to itegrate a legacy App with a .NET component) The purpose of this is just to test that the .NET COM+ Component works. • Keeping a large volume of data in Session - Suggestions / alternatives?

  I'm developing a web app for which the client wants us to query their data as little as possible. The data will be coming from a Microsoft CRM instance. So we've agreed that data will only be queried as and when it is needed, therefore if a web user wants to see a list of contacts (for example) that list is fetched into a local DataTable. Then if a new contact is created on the website the new contact is sent to CRM and added to the local DataTable at the same time. Likewise for edits. If the user then looks at their contacts again the data will just come from the local DataTable. At the moment local data is being kept in Session but my concern is that too much memory will start being used up. However traffic is expected to be pretty small, perhaps no more than 20 concurrent users so am I worrying about nothing or is there a better way you can suggest to handle this?

  Solr 1.4 Enterprise Search Server recommends doing large updates on a copy of the core, and then swapping it in for the main core. I am following these steps: Create prep core: http://localhost:8983/solr/admin/cores?action=CREATE&name=prep&instanceDir=main Perform index update, then commit/optimize on prep core. Swap main and prep core: http://localhost:8983/solr/admin/cores?action=SWAP&core=main&other=prep Unload prep core: http://localhost:8983/solr/admin/cores?action=UNLOAD&core=prep The problem I am having is, the core created in step 1 doesn't have any data in it. If I am going to do a full index of everything and the kitchen sink, that would be fine, but if I just want to update a (large) subset of the documents - that's obviously not going to work. (I could merge the cores, but part of what I'm trying to do is get rid of any deleted documents without trying to make a list of them.) Is there some flag to the CREATE action that I'm missing? The Solr Wiki page for CoreAdmin is a little sparse on details.

• focus on page scroll navigation when using iPad

  I've used Page Scroller Lite http://pagescroller.com to set up a single-page site at http://www.thestitchshop.co.uk There seems to be an issue that scolling works only once when clicking on a menu item. It will only work again after one touched scrolls the page 'manually' by sliding the finger across the page. Apparently, the issue is that the content gets the focus after the scroll and tapping on navigation then actually taps behind it. I've tried contacting the author of pagecroller, but no luck. So, how do I fix it? I don't have any JS knowledge, so I need a little more help along the way. Many thanks.   In Visual Studio 2008 (and others) when creating a .NET or silverlight application if you look at your project properties, it seems like you can only have one assembly name - across all configurations. I would like to compile my application as: MyAppDebug - in debug mode and just MyApp - in release mode Does anyone know if this is possible? Edit: It seems some people are questioning the reasoning behind the question, so I'll explain a little further: I'm working on a Silverlight application which gets automatically uploaded to our test site when I to a "build solution". The trouble is, the test team are now testing the online version, whilst I work on a new one. So, I want to have a url like .\MyApp.html for the regular version that the QA team will test and then .\MyApp.html?version=debug for the current version that I'm working on.

• How do people handle working with Code Names for their projects?

  Hi All, Recently we started using some code names for several different types of prototype applications all following a theme. This made things a little more fun and was a great idea. The problem is that Im not too sure how people deal with migrating a codebase from "codename" state into version 1.0 state which may have a proper name... not something that a client really shouldnt see :) We are using Visual Studio at the moment, and I can see that you can change the assembly name, but there are references to the namespaces, etc... that would really be a large change to make. Do people both changing things like namespaces before the v1.0 release?

• Using java.util.logging, is it possible to restart logs after a certain period of time?

  I have some java code that will be running as an importer for data for a much larger project. The initial logging code was done with the java.util.logging classes, so I'd like to keep it if possible, but it seems to be a little inadequate now given he amount of data passing through the importer. Often times in the system, the importer will get data that the main system doesn't have information for or doesn't match the system's data so it is ignored but a message is written to the log about what information was dropped and why it wasn't imported. The problem is that this tends to grow in size very quickly, so we'd like to be able to start a fresh log daily or weekly. Does anybody have an idea if this can be done in the logging classes or would I have to switch to log4j or custom? Thanks for any help!

  I have a many-to-many relationship between two entities; Item and Tag. I'm trying to create a predicate to take the selectedItem and return a ranking of items based on how many similar tags they have. So far I've tried: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"SUBQUERY(itemToTag, $item, $item in %@).@count > 0", selectedItem.itemToTag]; Any other iterations that have failed. It currently only returns the selectedItem in the list. I've found little on Subquery. Is there a guru out there that can help me refine this? Thanks in advance for the help!

  Hi all, I'm working on an iPhone app and I need to be able to display images to users. I have already gotten the code that takes the photo and stores it into the filesystem working well. Now I just need to figure out how to display the image. I've looked at the Three20 project I've read about on a few of the posts here, but it seems a bit cumbersome and like an extra dependency to import link and combine all of the Three20 library into my little app. Are there any other ways or a more streamlined library that will let me display photos to my users?   Hi, my layout's requirement is to keep all thumbnails at 80px height, not higher, not smaller. In my model I set the style to :thumb= "500x80", so basically almost every picture which is not too wide gets its perfect miniature with 80px height. Sometimes, however, my pictures are narrow and high, so the thumb can have unclickable dimensions of like 5x80. So I dont want to crop pictures as long as thumbnails are not getting crazy narrow, but I think I can make a little sacrifice and crop them if thumb's width is getting smaller than 25px. So my questions is - is it possible in paperclip to set minimal proportions of a picture by which the style will be "500x80" and beyond that it will turn to sth like "25x80#"?

  Is it recommended to count in small loops (where possible) down from length - 1 to zero instead of counting up to length - 1? 1.) Counting down for (int i = a.length - 1; i >= 0; i--) { if (a[i] == key) return i; } 2.) Counting up for (int i = 0; i < a.length; i++) { if (a[i] == key) return i; } The first one is slightly faster that the second one (because comparing to zero is faster) but is a little more error-prone in my opinion. Besides, the first one could maybe not be optimized by future improvements of the JVM. Any ideas on that?

  I'm done some Googling, and I've found nothing. I'm scoping out writing a plugin for an editor I use, and I am wondering whether there is a way I can access the PHP documentation via an API? For instance, I'd like to get raw access to the information (besides the comments) located here: http://php.net/file_exists. php.net seemingly uses MediaWiki which provides an API. The tutorial provides the example URL, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=login&format=xml. This does not work for php.net, however (http://php.net/w/api.php?action=login&format=xml). I'm just looking for a little information on how to interface with the PHP documentation.

  Hi, I have a little problem with declarative-authorization. I have a User and Role Model with a has_and_belongs_to_many association. I've created a Role named :moderator in my authorization_rules.rb Is it possible that a User with the Role Moderator only gets the Users that have the Moderator Role assigned to it?? -- User.with_permissions_to(:index) I thought it would be possible like that: role :moderator do has_permission_on :users, :to => :index do if_attribute :roles => contains { ????? } end end I also created a named_scope in my User Model because I thought it would help... class User has_and_belongs_to_many :roles named_scope :by_role, lambda { |role| { :include => :roles, :conditions => {"roles.name" => role} } } end Does anyone knows if it's possible to do this with declarative_authorization? • Difficulties of transforming a Java program to another language (or vice versa)

  Is there anything simple Java can't do that can be done in a similar language or vice versa? Lets say you have a piece of software in language X and you rewrite it entirely to Java (or the other way around), what are the little things that would seriously hamper the translation? At first I was thinking of comprehensions or multiple exit loops, but these are easily rewritten with a for_each loop with an if statement and a local variable respectively. Maybe Exceptions? But which language does not have a similar construct? Polymorphism? But I don't see how I could show that in a few lines. I'm looking for a short and sweet example, that would give some serious headache to work around.

• Java Properties and References -- I'm not getting what I expect.

  I'm a little embarrassed to ask this as I ought to know better, but here's what I've got. I have an object "Pitcher" with an int property of "runsAllowed". I have an object Batter that has a property of "responsiblePitcher". I have an object Team that has a property "pitcher". When the batter reaches base: Batter.responsiblePitcher = Team.pitcher; All that's well and good. However, if we have a pitching change while the runner is on base, I set a new pitcher in Team.pitcher: Team.pitcher = new Pitcher(); ... and of course this changes the value of Batter.pitcher. How should I be doing things differently such that the Batter.responsiblePitcher property continues to point to the pitcher who let him on base instead of pointing at whever is in the Team.pitcher property? Again, I feel like I ought to know this already ... Thanks.

  Hi Folks, I'm complaining about the growth of jQuery tagged questions at stackoverflow. There are so many people who ask, 'How to implement a specific plugin?' or 'How to use that plugin?' which makes me kinda sick. IMO: If you Tag a question to jQuery, javascript or C, it should be a question about the language itself and not some 'goofy' little plugin. Best case scenario, Tag those questions with jquery-plugins. I know I'm breaking my own rule along with this post, but I just realized that trend and I'm really interested in other opinions about that. Kind Regards --Andy

• Is it inmoral to put a captcha on a login form?

  In a recent project I put a captcha test on a login form, in order to stop possible brute force attacks. The inmediate reaction of other coworkers was a request to remove it, saying that it was innapropiate for that purpose, and that it was quite exotic to see a captcha in that place. I've seen captcha images on signup, contact, password recovery forms, etc. So I personally don't see innapropiate to put a captcha also on a place like that. Well, it obviously burns down usability a little bit, but it's a matter of time and getting used to it. With the lack of a captcha test, one would have to put some sort of blacklist / account locking mechanism, which also has some drawbacks. Is it a good choice for you? Am I getting somewhat captcha-aholic and need some sort of group therapy? Thanks in advance.

  I am writing a matlab code that would be able to read the audio file and then compare it to the another audio and recognize if those audio are the voice of the same person. In both type of the audio, would have the same word utterance and the audio is about 1 minutes long. I have come to know that the approach of sliding windows using hamming window would work best on this approach but have a very little idea on this. The simple code to read an audio file and then display a portion of 10s is as below : [x,fs, nbits]= wavread('01-AudioTrack 01.wav'); subplot(211) plot(x) title('Entire Wave') smallRange = 1:100000; subplot(212) plot(smallRange,x(smallRange)) How do I make Hamming window each of 10ms in this case and what approaches should I take to deal with this problem ?

  I was reading about rem units in CSS3, and was a little confused. If you use rem, do you still use em or does that replace it? For example: .selector { margin-bottom:24px; margin-bottom:2.4rem; font-size:16px; font-size:1.6rem; } or .selector { margin-bottom:24px; margin-bottom:2.4em; margin-bottom:2.4rem; } Just trying to figure out if rem takes the place of em, or if it's just another unit.

  lastly I've been feeling like jquery is slowly becoming the defacto standard in js libraries I might be wrong!) or at least that is more active than the rest of the frameworks... for example I've been looking for a fine open source calendar like componente and found http://fullcalendar.vinsol.com/ we've been using prototype for very little things, like its selector capabilities ($ function as a shortcut for document.getElementById, mainly), executing some piece of js when the page is loaded and to issue some very simple ajax calls. so I guess the migration should be quite straight forward, but I'd like to know the pros / cons of migrating to prototype... on the other hand, I guess that having both of them together is not a good choice, specially taking into account that the migration should be quite simple... am I right? saludos sas
