    We develop a WinForm application using Scintilla.NET (1.7) component, which uses SciLexer.dll (unamnaged). At run-time, we distribute both 32bit and 64bit SciLexer.dll, and we load the correct one when the application starts (everything works fine).   • iPhone and Core Data: how to retain user-entered data between updates?

    Consider an iPhone application that is a catalogue of animals. The application should allow the user to add custom information for each animal -- let's say a rating (on a scale of 1 to 5), as well as some notes they can enter in about the animal. However, the user won't be able to modify the animal data itself. Assume that when the application gets updated, it should be easy for the (static) catalogue part to change, but we'd like the (dynamic) custom user information part to be retained between updates, so the user doesn't lose any of their custom information. We'd probably want to use Core Data to build this app. Let's also say that we have a previous process already in place to read in animal data to pre-populate the backing (SQLite) store that Core Data uses. We can embed this database file into the application bundle itself, since it doesn't get modified. When a user downloads an update to the application, the new version will include the latest (static) animal catalogue database, so we don't ever have to worry about it being out of date. But, now the tricky part: how do we store the (dynamic) user custom data in a sound manner? My first thought is that the (dynamic) database should be stored in the Documents directory for the app, so application updates don't clobber the existing data. Am I correct? My second thought is that since the (dynamic) user custom data database is not in the same store as the (static) animal catalogue, we can't naively make a relationship between the Rating and the Notes entities (in one database) and the Animal entity (in the other database). In this case, I would imagine one solution would be to have an "animalName" string property in the Rating/Notes entity, and match it up at runtime. Is this the best way to do it, or is there a way to "sync" two different databases in Core Data?

  • DatagridView loses current edit on Background update

    Here's my problem : I have a DataGridView bound to a BindingList of custom objects. A background thread is constantly updating a value of these objects. The udpates are showing correctly, and everything is fine except for one thing - If you try to edit a different field while the background-updated field is being updated, it loses the entered value.   • ASP.NET MVC + MySql Membership Provider, user cannot login

    Hello, I've been playing around with using MySql as the membership provider for asp.net mvc forms authentication. I've got things configured correctly as far as i can tell, and i can create users via both the register action and asp.net web config site. however, when i try to login with one of the users, it does not work. it returns an error as if i had entered a wrong password, or if the account doesn't exist. i have verified in the database that the account does exist. UPDATE So after debugging the login process in the code of the membership provider itself, i discovered that there is a bug in the provider. There is a discrepancy between the password hash that is stored in the database, and the has that is generated based on the inputted password. As a workaround for my issue, i changed the password format to 'encrpyted' and added a machine key to my web.config. I am still interested in figuring out the issue with the hashed format in the provider, and will spend some more time debugging it, and if i can figure out the problem, i will put together a patch and submit it.

  • mySQL Efficiency Issue - How to find the right balance of normalization...?

    I'm fairly new to working with relational databases, but have read a few books and know the basics of good design. I'm facing a design decision, and I'm not sure how to continue. Here's a very over simplified version of what I'm building: People can rate photos 1-5, and I need to display the average votes on the picture while keeping track of the individual votes. For example, 12 people voted 1, 7 people voted 2, etc. etc. The normalization freak of me initially designed the table structure like this: Table pictures id* | picture | userID | Table ratings id* | pictureID | userID | rating With all the foreign key constraints and everything set as they shoudl be. Every time someone rates a picture, I just insert a new record into ratings and be done with it. To find the average rating of a picture, I'd just run something like this: SELECT AVG(rating) FROM ratings WHERE pictureID = '5' GROUP by pictureID Having it setup this way lets me run my fancy statistics to. I can easily find who rated a certain picture a 3, and what not. Now I'm thinking if there's a crapload of ratings (which is very possible in what I'm really designing), finding the average will became very expensive and painful. Using a non-normalized version would seem to be more efficient. e.g.: Table picture id | picture | userID | ratingOne | ratingTwo | ratingThree | ratingFour | ratingFive To calculate the average, I'd just have to select a single row. It seems so much more efficient, but so much more uglier. Can someone point me in the right direction of what to do? My initial research shows that I have to "find the right balance", but how do I go about finding that balance? Any articles or additional reading information would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

    Hello I have a user model and a ratings model. Whenever a new user is created I want to create a new feedback model with it automatically. Each user model has one feedback model and each feedback model has many ratings. My Classes class User < ActiveRecord::Base end class Feedback < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user has_many :ratings end class Rating < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :feedback end My database tables -user doesn't have anything special -feedback has user_id. This user_id should be the same as the user that has just been created. For example, user_id of 1 is created, then a feedback model should be created that belongs to user_id of 1. So the user_id column in the feedback database will also be 1. - Rating has a feedback_id and a user_id the user_id in this case is the id of the person who submitted the rating. I am having it assigned through the build command. I believe my process is correct here. The Goal The goal is to have each user have a feedback table that has many ratings from other users. So if someone goes to the feedback page, they will see all the ratings given and by who. Is there a better way to approach this? How do you create a model of feedback with the same id as the user being created right when a new user is created. The idea is that when a user is created a feedback is created associated with that user so people can then go to http://localhost:3000/users/1/feedback/ and submit new ratings. I'm trying to bypass having a user rate another user with just a ratings model because I'm not sure how to do it.

But trying to send the stream directly as an email attachment fails - just get an empty file attached to the email when I do System.Net.Mail.Attachment file = new System.Net.Mail.Attachment(stream, "MobileBill.xlsx", "application/vnd.ms-excel"); Anbody know how to do this?

    I am trying to export the HTML page contents to Word. My Html display page is: What is your favourite color? NA List the top three school ? one National two Devs three PS And a button for click event. The button click event will open MS word and paste the page contents in word. The word page contains the table property of html design page. It occurs only in Word 2003. But in word 2007 the word document contains the text with out table property. How can I remove this table property in word 2003. I am not able to add the snapshots. Else i will make you clear. I am designing the web page by aspx.     I'm designing a simple expander control. I've derived from UserControl, drawn inner controls, built, run; all ok. Since an inner Control is a Panel, I'd like to use it as container at design time. Indeed I've used the attributes: [Designer(typeof(ExpanderControlDesigner))] [Designer("System.Windows.Forms.Design.ParentControlDesigner, System.Design", typeof(IDesigner))] Great I say. But it isn't... The result is that I can use it as container at design time but: The added controls go back the inner controls already embedded in the user control Even if I push to top a control added at design time, at runtime it is back again on controls embedded to the user control I cannot restrict the container area at design time into a Panel area What am I missing?     I have a named scopes like so... named_scope :gender, lambda { |gender| { :joins => {:survey_session => :profile }, :conditions => { :survey_sessions => { :profiles => { :gender => gender } } } } } and when I call it everything works fine. I also have this average method I call... Answer.average(:rating, :include => {:survey_session => :profile}, :group => "profiles.career") which also works fine if I call it like that. However if I were to call it like so... Answer.gender('m').average(:rating, :include => {:survey_session => :profile}, :group => "profiles.career") I get... ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid: PGError: ERROR: table name "profiles" specified more than once : SELECT avg("answers".rating) AS avg_rating, profiles.career AS profiles_career FROM "answers" LEFT OUTER JOIN "survey_sessions" survey_sessions_answers ON "survey_sessions_answers".id = "answers".survey_session_id LEFT OUTER JOIN "profiles" ON "profiles".id = "survey_sessions_answers".profile_id INNER JOIN "survey_sessions" ON "survey_sessions".id = "answers".survey_session_id INNER JOIN "profiles" ON "profiles".id = "survey_sessions".profile_id WHERE ("profiles"."gender" = E'm') GROUP BY profiles.career Which is a little hard to read but says I'm including the table profiles twice. If I were to just remove the include from average it works but it isn't really practical because average is actually being called inside a method which gets passed the scoped. So there is some times gender or average might get called with out each other and if either was missing the profile include it wouldn't work. So either I need to know how to fix this apparent bug in Rails or figure out a way to know what scopes were applied to a ActiveRecord::NamedScope::Scope object so that I could check to see if they have been applied and if not add the include for average.

What am I missing?

    I get the data of the stored image on database as byte[] array; then I convert it to System.Drawing.Image like the code shown below; public System.Drawing.Image CreateImage(byte[] bytes) { System.IO.MemoryStream memoryStream = new System.IO.MemoryStream(bytes); System.Drawing.Image image = System.Drawing.Image.FromStream(memoryStream); return image; } (*) On the other hand I am planning to show a list of images on asp.net pages as the client scrolls downs the page. The more user gets down and down on the page he/she does see the more photos. So it means fast page loads and rich user experience. (you may see what I mean on www.mashable.com, just take care the new loads of the photos as you scroll down.) Moreover, the returned imgae object from the method above, how can i show it in a loop dynamically using the (*) conditions above. Regards bk
