  • Tools for reformatting a spreadsheet into PDF?

    I'm looking for an easy way to produce nicely formatted PDF documents using a subset of data available in a spreadsheet. Ideally, I would be able to produce one or more PDF documents for each row int e spreadsheet. Each row contains scientific data about a sample. There are numbers, text and images in the Spreadsheet that need to be reformatted in a nice way in a PDF. Ideally, the solution would be a piece of software that a non-technical but highly intelligent scientist could operate.

  • SFTP "Could not connect to server error"

    I'm having problems connecting to my server via SFTP. I can SSH in to the system perfectly fine, but for some odd reason, i'm not able to SFTP (which I used to be able to). I have cleared ALL my iptables rules iptables -F still no access. I have removed the sub system (to allow FULL access) still no access. I can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is. Thus is therefore making a solution impossible.

  • How to do something like `mplayer movie.mpg` from ssh and it play on the current display?

    I've set up a little media center computer running Arch Linux. I want to eventually get it so that there is no keyboard or mouse required. Right now I want the solution to be SSH. My problem is that when I do something like mplayer movie.mpg over an ssh shell, I'll just get vo: couldn't open the X11 display ()! How do I get this to work correctly and play on my TV(the display the media center computer is hooked to)?

    I'm a Web Developer who has just made the switch over to Mac. Despite all that I know and love about the Windows environment I find myself in a new mysterious place. My question: what is the best Apache, PHP setup for a Mac developer? On Windows I've been using WAMP which was quite nice, I know Mac comes shipped with Apache 2 and PHP pre-installed. I'm just wondering if there is a better solution out there.

  • How to determine which image(s) in a word document is unusually large?

    I have a word 2007 document that is now 7MB in size that is being edited by many folks. I would like to figure out which of the many images in the document is the 'culprit'. My hunch is likely one or two of them is a bitmap or some other large image. In smaller documents when this is happened I can do it by trial and error: Remove an Image Save the File Check File size repeat Is there a more elegant solution to this issue?

    I have to handle many (1'000 - 30'000) big files ranging from 200MB up to 2GB. The demand for these files is variable (0 - 300 downloads / file). This is why a single file must saved on 2 or more servers. My servers are placed in different datacenters (France), with different size HDDs (750GB to 4TB). Currently I share the files using PHP and ncftpget / ncftpput, but it's very slow. I need a solution to handle balancing these files across 7+ servers.

Does anyone know how to implement such a solution? I'm open to Windows and non-windows solutions, free and proprietary.

  • Unable to find javac after installing OpenJDK 1.6 and 1.7

    I am currently at a loss as to why this is happening. I did some basic research by running: whereis javac -and- find / -name javac ...and I came up with nothing I searched the web for answers but they all seem to focus on javac existing on the filesystem, and that needs to be done is to restore a missing sym-link. Has anyone run up against this issue and found a solution ? I have attempted to install openJDK on Scientific Linux 6.3 with the command: yum install openjdk Thanks!!!

    I have a feeling this is quite easy to do but every solution found on google has to do with adding a script to be run whenever someone logs into the machine. What I am looking for is a way to run a script when only I log into the machine. I ssh into a shared computer and need to have it load a couple modules for me and I imagined the easiest way to do this would to just run a script on login. Is there a simple way?

  • developing code in multiple locations

    I have two machines (one is a mac one is a pc), and I develop on both machines but only run "production" on the pc. Now, I sometimes face an issue where both machine PC and machine MAC have different versions of the same code, and I would like them to share a common source.   • Quick method to determine SSD drive health?

    I have an Intel X-25M drive that was marked "failed" twice in a ZFS storage array, as noted here. However, after removing the drive, it seems to to mount, read and write in other computers (Mac, PC, USB enclosure, etc.) Is there a good way to determine the drive's present health? I feel that the previous failure in the ZFS solution was the convergence of bugs, bad error reporting and hardware. It seems like this drive may have some life in it, though.

  • Firefox loses connection

    Hi I am using Firefox 3.5.2 and it normally works fine but then randomly it will lose connection for a few minutes, just stalling and acting as though the page is loading. I can still use Chrome and IE but FF just sits there without doing anything, not even showing the 404 or connection timeout page. Does anyone else have this problem and do they have a solution?

  • GIT not functionnal on Mac OS X Lion?

    I am trying to use GIT to manage my computing projects. But all commands using GIT do not respond on my terminal. For example if I try git --version followed by entry keyboard typing, a blank line appear and wait until ever. If I type again the entry key on my keyboard the command line is again available but nothing appear. It's the same for all git function that I type. Do you have any solution or explanation for this ?

  • What server setup for a small web development company? [closed]

    I co-own a company with a friend of mine and we have decided to buy a new server to support our business (our current server is an Asus EEE Box, working great but too limited :) ). I should mention that we are web developers but occasionally we do small-office sys admin. Thus, 99% of time we work on GNU/Linux (mainly Ubuntu) but from time to time we need to setup a Windows environment to assist some customers (e.g. setup a temporary SQL Server 2008). Our requirements: Low budget: we don't want the cheapest solution out there but we can't afford to spend too much. Budget could be ~1000-1500€ (before VAT) Robustness: we would like to setup a RAID array and maybe have an external disk where we can store backups Virtualization: we need to be able to setup few servers for development. The scenario is something like this (~8 appliances running in parallel): Redmine + GIT server Bacula server FTP server 3-4 virtual appliances that could be set up on demand to test our applications or support a customer. The appliances could be: LAMP, Tomcat+PostgreSQL, SQL Server Support: if something breaks down it shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement. Now, given the main requirements, there are some doubts we need to clarify: Do you suggest to buy a prepackaged solution (for example a customized Dell PowerEdge T110 or T310) or to assemble the server by ourselves (buy the separate components)? What RAID configuration do you suggest? I was thinking of RAID1 (probably cheaper) or RAID5. should we buy a hardware RAID controller or is it ok to use a software RAID (mdadm)? In case, which controller do you suggest? What processor do you suggest (Intel Xeon, i3, i5, i7, AMD)? How much RAM? (I was thinking at least 8GB, ~1GB per appliance) What virtualization software do you recommend? VMWare seems to be the best choice, but what about XEN or KVM? We don't want to buy licenses at the moment so we would like to consider only free options. What OS do you recommend? We know Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo very well (we would like to use Ubuntu Server), however it seems a lot of people goes for CentOS. Thanks in advance if you can help us with this!     I am unable to access certain websites from my PC viz. google.com, gmail.com , stackoverflow.com, etc. However, I am able to access facebook.com, twitter.com, infoq.com etc. Currently I am accessing Google via proxy server. I suspect that the problem might exist with websites that have used ASP for scripting. Please suggest a solution to the problem that I am facing.

  • Why do I get "Only a single instance of this application can run" ?

    I have been trying to update my Adobe Flash Player for hours. I've read the forum, downloaded the uninstaller, restarted on every attempt. Tried for Firefox and IE. When I click on the downloaded icon, it disappears and this message comes up: "only one instance of this application can run". Also checked Adobe and other various sites for a solution. I need my browsers, with Flash. Can someone help?

  • `find` command not available in web host, how to implement a delete based on modification time using other commands?

    I'm creating a simple datebase backup solution for a client using web hosting at DataFlame. The web hosting account provides access to cron but not a shell. I have a database backup script creating regular backups and I want to automatically remove those more than N days old. I attempted to use find -v $backup_dir -mtime +$keep_days -name "*db.tar.gz" -delete however the user executing the script does not have permission to run find. Can you suggest how to implement this without using the find command?
