• Whats consuming HDD Space

  I have single partition of 92GB in which I installed Ubuntu 12.04. And for some Unknown reason a message pop ups saying that I only have 1GB of HDD space left. I cant figure out whats consuming the HDD. I have not installed anything except Virtual Machines Perpetrator found using Disk Usage Analyzer

• Using virt-install to mount multiple cdrom drives/images

  I would like to create a windows xp guest from the windows xp upgrade cd I have, along with one of a few full versions I have around. However, when I reach the stage in the installer where I am prompted to insert a full version cd, the installer can't find it, i.e.: Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD.. Is there a work-around for this?, my Googling didn't uncover anything. I've tried various combinations of mounting .iso files and specifying disks, such as: $sudo virt-install --accelerate --connect qemu:///system -n xpsp1 -r 2048 --disk ./vm/winxp_sp1.iso,device=cdrom --disk ./vm/windows.qcow2,size=12 --vnc --noautoconsole --os-type windows --os-variant winxp --vcpus 2 -c /dev/cdrom --check-cpu If I try to specify multiple cdrom drives, I receive an error: virt-install --accelerate --connect qemu:///system -n xpsp1 -r 2048 --disk ./vm/winxp_sp1.iso,device=cdrom --disk /dev/cdrom,device=cdrom --disk ./vm/windows.qcow2,size=12 --vnc --noautoconsole --os-type windows --os-variant winxp --vcpus 2 --check-cpu Starting install... • Are all bluetooth adapters the same ?

  I have a wireless bluetooth mouse which I'm not using. It used to have a bluetooth adapter with it, which I lost a long time ago ... (don't ask). Since my regular mouse just died (bad contact in cable from messing with it too much) I was thinking of buying just the new generic bluetooth adapter ? Are all those adapters the same thing ? Or can this that came with the mouse be somehow different ? Edit by ldigas: How would one find out what bluetooth standard/class/adapter one needs ? (I don't see anything useful written on the sticker on the mouse). Or to put it bluntly - will it work with this one in your opinion ?

• Can I speed up cygwin's fork?

• Coldfusion 8 crash

  I have a very big problem with coldfusion 8 on Windows server 2008 with IIS7. They are in production server and sometimes the the site is not available, I have to manually end the jrun.exe process from task manager and then the site is available. I realize that the process jrun.exe has abut 1.3Gb of memory used at the time it crash's. It happens 2-3 times a day, I have looking in the coldfusion logs and I did not found anything strange beside some warnings that some job exceeded the 300 sec of time execution. I forgot to mention that coldfusion is a 32bit application but the windows is a 64bit, this may be the problem? I'm not such good in coldfusion, so If someone knows how to troubleshoot please let me know Thanks!

• MacBookPro running Windows 7: accidental trackpad input is driving me mad

  I am running Windows7 Professional 64bit on a 2010 MacBookPro using BootCamp 3.1. I am using an external trackball. When I am typing, I accidently brushing the trackpad and accidently overtyping randomly selected pieces of text. Which is driving me mad. I have tried to install TrackPad++, but I could not get the Trackpad++ control panel to recognise that the driver software was installed. I tried TrackPad Magic, but although it gives me a system tray icon telling me it is working, but it does not appear to disable the track pad. A quick Google implies that there should be an option in the BootCamp Control Panel 'Ignore accidental Input while typing'. But I can't see one of those in my BootCamp Control Panel. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is this feature 32bit only? Is there anything else I should try?

• SMTP server (IIS) is running but can't test it with telnet

  I have a Windows 2003 web edition server that I can't seem to get the SMTP relay working. BT4 shows port 25 open. When I try use telnet to test it on my desktop I get: Connecting To XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX...Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed. From the server I get: Microsoft Telnet> o 127.0.0.1 25 Connecting To 127.0.0.1... Connection to host lost. There isn't anything useful in the logs. Any ideas?

• Debug Apache mod_status showing 151 requests/sec - 2.7 GB/second

  One of my web servers went crazy this morning and showed "151 requests/sec - 2.7 GB/second - 140.7 MB/request" the normal is like "11.1 requests/sec - 65.6 kB/second - 5.9 kB/request" I don't even think that kind of through put is possible on my server. • Unable to access local network when Cisco VPN client is connected

  I'm a developer and don't have much networking expertise, so bear with me. I'm using the Cisco VPN Client 5.0.02.0090 to connect to my work's VPN that way I can RDP into my work computer. Once connected, I can't ping anything on the local network once connected to the VPN thus I am unable to access my work's network. This used to work about two weeks ago but abruptly stopped working today. However, I have the Cisco VPN Client installed on my laptop and I am able to ping and RDP into my work computer from there. Both my desktop and laptop computers are connected to the same router at home. I have tried the following so far: Rebooted my computer Reinstalled VPN client Updated NIC drivers Disabled firewall Opened up ports 500, 4500, and 10000 Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Outlook receives winmail.txt attachment instead of Excel, PowerPoint or Word attachments from Lotus notes senders

  Ok so the title pretty much says it all. We are offering a Hosted Exchange solution for our customer. Everything is working fine except for one customer complaining that he is receiving winmail.dat or winmail.txt attachments instead of the actual Word Excel or PowerPoint attachments he should be receiving, only when these messages come from a specific European senders, that is using Lotus Notes. I know that usually the problem is coming from Outlook senders to other mail clients, but this is not the first they inform me of this but I can't find anything on the matter so far. Has anyone ever gotten and solved this problem? If not, does anyone have any idea regarding this? I had solved this problem a few months ago, by upgrading Outlook to SP2 and then uninstalling it using the Service Pack removing tool of Microsoft. It seems that only the latest SP1 version could work but not the SP2. The problem is that now nothing is working at all. Thank you for your help, Philippe

• Is there a Linux distro that will easily run "embedded style" on a Raspberry Pi?

  I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

• SQL SERVER – Fix: Error: Compatibility Level Drop Down is Empty

  I currently have SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 both installed on the same machine. My job requires me to travel a lot and I like to travel light. Hence, I have only one computer with all the software installed in it. I can install Virtual Machines but as I was able to install SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 side by side, I just went ahead with that option. Now one day when I opened up my SQL Server 2014 and went to the properties of the my database, I realized that the dropdown box for Compatibility level is empty. I just can’t select anything there or see what is the current Compatibility level of the database. This was the first time for me so I was bit confused and I tried to search online. Upon searching online I realize that if I was not the first, there are very few questions on this subject on various forums as well as there is no convincing answer to this problem online. That means, I was pretty much first one to face this error. See the image of the situation I was facing. Now I decided to resolve this issue as soon as I can. I spent a few minutes here and there and realize my mistake. I had connected to SQL Server 2014 instance from SQL Server 2012 Management Studio. Hence, I was not able to see any compatibility related settings. Once I connected to SQL Server 2014 instance with SQL Server 2014 Management Studio – this issue was resolved.   I have HP server ML370 g5 with 8 SAS, c drive 1 72 gb raid 0, d drive 2 72 gb raid 0, f drive 5 146 gb raid 5. 2 of 5 sas drive has got bad sectors and raid 5 is showing status failed. now i want to remove all this 5 SAS and put 1 by 1 in any of the bay to make its image for data recovery purpose without writing anything to the drive. how should i proceed. i also want to keep drive c and d intact. also is it possible if i put all this 5 drives in the bay with the same sequense will it recognise the raid 5 array ( i read some where its smart controller..just curious) many thanks in advance.

• Permission issues causes Unity Segmentation fault

  I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and I can boot to the unity-greeter and login just fine, but after login I just get a black screen with a cursor. I have tried following http://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI http://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver and the manual install of the downloaded AMD drivers. All have the same affect. Also I have read Black screen after login with cursor I get a black screen after logging in ubuntu 13.04 black screen after login Ubuntu 13.10 - Black screen after login session Ubuntu 13.04 - Black screen with unresponsive cursor Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Problem - Boots into Blank Black Screen All of which were no further help then the two support articles about ATI drivers So I switched back to the default drivers and went a little further into debugging, when I do ctrl+alt+F1 and login and try unity --debug > unity_start.log then ctrl+alt+F8 the screen stays black with a cursor and when I switch back ctrl+alt+F1 the contents of the log output are http://pastebin.com/rdQG4Hb0 However when I try sudo unity --debug > unity_start_root.log then ctrl+alt+F8, unity starts and the output of the log is http://pastebin.com/Yv4RD2j7 The fact that it starts as root tells be it is either a permissions issue of some required file or there is some setting that is specific to my user that is causing the SIGSEGV. So to narrow this down I activated the guest account and tried to login and got the same black screens with only a mouse cursor, so this tells me that it is not a configuration issue, but a permissions issue, so how do I narrow down which file has the wrong permissions? Also is there anything further that may help debug this issue? Ok after a few more hours of googling I found that if I add myself to the video group I can login and see the desktop, but there are lots of other permission related issues, so I am thinking something went wonky with PolicyKit during the upgrade, is there a way to reset PolicyKit settings for a user?

• "setpci: command not found" in CentOS

  I'm trying to configure my Mac Mini running CentOS 5.5 to start automatically when power is restored after a power loss. I understand the following command has to be executed: setpci -s 0:1f.0 0xa4.b=0 When I run that command on my machine though I get bash: setpci: command not found. Is there a package I need to install via yum or something? I'm not seeing a clear answer via Google and I looked at the man page for setpci and it doesn't mention anything. Also, does this command need to be run every time the machine starts or just once?

• How to use a custom .bashrc file on SSH login

  I've found that with the new company I'm working with I often have to access linux servers with relatively short lifetimes. On each of these servers I have an account, but whenever a new one is created, I have to go through the hassle of transferring over my .bashrc. It's possible however that in about a months time that server won't be around anymore. I also have to access many other servers for short periods of times (minutes) where it's just not worth it to transfer over my .bashrc but since I'm working on a lot of servers, this adds up to a lot of wasted time. I don't want to change anything on the servers, but I was wondering if there was a way to have a "per-connection" .bashrc, so whenever I would SSH to a server my settings would be used for that session. If this is possible, it would be nice if I could do the same thing with other configuration files, like gitconfig files.

• Cant get XAMPP Server to run?

  I recently installed XAMPP server with PHP, MySQL, and Apache, and I had a friend help me load and configure it and it worked fine. I was able to play around with it, and load anything I wanted and I was able to confirm that it was working. When I went back to use it today, and I tried to run it Apache wont start up now. I imagine I either need to stop another service or there is something not allowing me to start up XAMPP, because even when I try to run the XAMPP_START script from the command line, it wont start.

• Gparted resize of an extended partition fails with error "can't have overlapping partitions".

  I just decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. However I didn't do this manually but instead used the "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7" option during the installation. Now the partition that Ubuntu runs in has very little space and I am getting warning messages. I'm trying to use gparted 0.12.1-5 (via a live CD) to give Windows less space and give Ubuntu more. I've managed to remove 100GB from the Windows partition so I now have some unallocated space between Windows and Ubuntu. This is what it looks like inside Ubuntu (not using the live CD, since it won't let me mount a USB to save a screenshot): So first I take sda4 (extended?) and resize it to the left so it takes up all the unallocated space. Then I resize sda5 (ext4) as well so it takes up all the new space. However, when I hit apply, it fails on the first action (resizing sd4) with the error message can't have overlapping partitions. Any ideas as to why this happens? I also tried resizing sda4 by just a few MB so that it definitely didn't overlap anything, but I still got the same error message. To clarify, I am using gparted from the LiveCD, I just took the screenshot from Ubuntu. I couldn't attach the details file containing the error information from gparted because I can't mount a USB drive when I'm running from the LiveCD. I'm tried following the guide on the gparted website but it says Invalid argument or something like that. If the gparted details are needed, I may need some hints on how to solve the USB issue as well. :)

• Big square ads appear in lower right corner of both IE and Chrome

  In both IE and Chrome, large ads appear in the lower right corner of the browser window. Sometime they look reputable like for Microsoft, but sometimes they are big flashing boxes that say "You have won". Right now I am looking at "Need to lose 30 lbs?" I ran Microsofot Security Essentials and it didn't find anything. I then ran Windows Defender Offline (boot from CD). WDO found five things lincluding browser hijack that caused the wrong page to appear after clicking a link. It reported that it cleaned successfully, after which I ran a quick scan to confirm. After rebooting I still see the ads. Do I still have an infection? Any other tools to try? What about ComboFix? Thanks Update: Here's a screenshot - on superuser

• Set Firefox to Be On Top of Other Windows

  Sometimes you need to keep a close watch on a website and have Firefox remain in view regardless of the other apps running. See how you can keep Firefox in constant view with the Always on Top extension. Before If you have a webpage that you like to watch throughout the day but have a very busy desktop then Firefox can get lost in all of the clutter. Note: You can read about the ReloadEvery extension here. Even with a widescreen monitor sometimes there is just not enough room to keep everything in easy view while you are working on something. Always on Top in Action Once you have installed the extension you will notice that a new Toolbar Button has automatically been added to your Navigation Toolbar. At the moment this is the only on/off switch for the extension. Clicking on the Toolbar Button will enable Always on Top and the button will change to a blue color to indicate its’ active status. Click on it again to disable it. Do anything that you like in the other windows…Firefox will still be the topmost window and easy to view. Conclusion The Always on Top extension was made to do just one thing and it does it very well…keeping your Firefox window on top. Being able to turn it on or off without digging through a bunch of menus adds that extra level of convenience. • IMAP/POP won't send allow emails to outside- New Dell PowerEdge 7310 running SBS 2011

  I have a brand new out of the box Dell PowerEdge T310 running SBS 2011. Our employees at our remote offices can't send emails to recipients outside of our own domain. The workstations at the same location as the server aren't having any problem. I would at this time like to say "Thanks a lot" to the super-minds at Microsoft for protecting our email server from rogue computers attempting to send fake emails. (Silly me I thought proper login and password conventions would handle that.) I know this is something dealing with relaying but thus far nothing from any posts I've read have changed anything. Honestly, if someone is crafty enough to guess one of our login/password combos, let them send emails through our server I don't care!

• mac osX file recovery

  I thought that all operating systems would merge folder content when being moved to the same location. Imagine my surprise when that didn't happen and I have hundreds, if not thousands of files that have gone missing and are nowhere to be found. Because they were not "deleted" they are not in the trash bin. I've tried to do some recovery using a program called stellarPheonix but after about a 24hour scan, it didn't recognize any of the raw files (.dng,.arw) as image files and so I couldn't see if they could be recovered. It also didn't show the directory structure, which would be handy. I tried a quick scan, but all it showed was files that were still on the HD, not sure what the point of that is. I've used recover 2000 on Win and it does a good job, does anyone know of anything that works quickly and reliably for this kind of file recovery. (I don't think I should have to do a sector-by=sector for this kind of file loss)

• A client wants us to screen work machines for pornography. Is it possible?

  A long-time client has asked us to help screen their work machines for pornography. They're worried about liability if sensitive materials were found. Their main concerns (for obvious reasons) are video, audio, and image files. If possible, they'd also like to scan text-based documents for inappropriate content. They have a hierarchy of not-for-work content starting with blatantly illegal (I don't have to list details), moving down to obviously offensive, and also including things that may be offensive to some - think lingerie ads, joke cards featuring butt cracks, and anything related to Howie Mandel. My questions are: Is this ethical? I think it is since every employee legally agrees that their work machine belongs to the company and is subject to search. The screenings are not to occur on personal machines brought to work. Is it feasible? I've done a lot of image processing/indexing but this seems like a whole new world of complexity. Any references to successful techniques for discovering porn? Is it appropriate for me to archive the results when something is discovered?
