  It's been almost 4 years since I last logged into this site, but when I search my name I still rank high for people searching for me! I didn't realize I was so popular!Well, I've obviously since abandonded this blog and don't really want to maintain a blog in 2 locations now that I am getting back into it. (At least, not at this time - if I can figure out how to cross-post things may change...) I can instead be found at http://mindfulsanity.com where I have posted more frequently in the last few months on a few things web and other experiences and will continue to do so. • Does a code inherit GNU GPL if it just link to GPL librrary?

  Sorry for bad English. Suppose there is a library xxx under GNU GPL, that provide a function yyy. Suppose my code links to the library and use this function. Does my code inherit GPL license? IANAL, but my thoughts are conflicting: On other hand, my code is derivative from the library, so it should inherit GPL. On other hand, my code just use link to the xxx. Maybe there are other libraries, that has the same interface (particularly, they provide yyy function with same functionality, but different implementation). My code may link to any. My code really doesn't directly derived from xxx, it just use its interface. So, my code shouldn't inherit GPL. I'm confused. ADDED. The question is absolutely abstract. I don't mean any concrete GPL library.

• Drupal Blog vs. WordPress Blog for a Drupal Website? [closed]

  Is there a blog of preference for SEO, when it comes down to Drupal websites. I ask as WordPress seems to have the better plug-ins, though may not integrate as well. Any thoughts on this? I am asking from primarily a SEO perspective though also a design one as well. In other words, there are so many fabulous blog templates in WordPress and not sure if there are in Drupal. I seem to be having a struggle finding Drupal blogs to purchase, such as premium blogs.

• nut (UPS) and SSL certificates

  Today I installed nut on my Ubuntu server (14.03). $ uname -a Linux boson 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:30:00 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The UPS is connected to another server (called neutron), so I use nut-client to keep tabs on the UPS state. When I do sudo upsc [email protected] I get: Init SSL without certificate database battery.charge: 15 battery.charge.low: 10 battery.charge.warning: 50 battery.date: not set battery.mfr.date: 2012/11/27 : The first line of the output concerns me. I've not seen this on other installations of nut on Debian-based servers. What can I do to get rid of that line? EDIT: This "Init SSL without certificate database" is extra annoying because it is not part of the output of upsc and therefore I cannot grep it out.

• Best practices for versioning project after dependency upgrade

  Say, my project have dependency N with version 1.0.0. Then something have changed, and I should depend on newer version - let it be 1.0.1. OK, I'm incrementing dependency version, nothing else changes in my code. It looks like I should increment my own projects' version, but how exactly I should increment? Should I increment only third number (so-called revision), or best practices here are more complicated. For example, may be, if we are changing projects' dependency minor value, we should do the same thing in the project itself?

• Simple Hierarchical Clustering Implementations for C#?

  I need a C# library that can do hierarchical single/complete link clustering. It's for a BSc final year project and I can't find any free implementations. I'd be happy to port a small(ish) Java project to C#, but most of the Java implementations are contained within huge libraries that have 30+ algorithms. The problem with large libraries is that one has to port 50% of the entire library due to dependency fanout. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone knows of any free single/complete link clustering implementations for C# or a small Java implementation of either! By the way, as I am a student, it may be possible to ask for an academic/research license from commercial companies.

• Who owns the code, who owns the algorithm, who owns the idea?

  This question got me thinking what products of the programming effort belong to the employer, and what don't. The two extremes are (0) the code - it apparently belongs to the employer and (1) the learned personal and technical skills. But what is in between? Who owns the pseudocode/algorithm? Who owns the general idea of the algorithm? Who owns the know-how that such an algorithm may serve some useful purpose (e.g. on this site questions are values, as well as answers)? Also: Who owns an idea on the web?

• Are C or C++ The Only Viable Languages for a GC

  Background I have just finished writing a compiler for a functional language compiling to the JVM as a learning project. However, since I'm just doing this to learn, I thought it might be interesting to write a native backend and a RTS for it. As I've been planning out what this new backend will look like, the one point I'm stumbling on is the garbage collector. I've implemented the compiler in Haskell. But I have no desire to write the GC in Haskell since, while it may be possible, it'd suck. Question I've looked at several FOSS garbage collectors prior to posting and most of them were implemented in good old ANSI C. Is this still the most accepted choice for writing a GC nowadays? I've seen that this site tends to frown upon questions with multiple answers so I hope this will make it more specific: If some startup was writing a professional grade gc today, are the only viable choice for them C or C++? It's my first question here so please comment and let me know if this question is ill-suited for for programmers.

• UbuntuGNOME 13.10 - Problem: Keyboard layout: Control L and Caps Lock swapped

  I have a problem in UbuntuGNOME 13.10 which I didn't had in prior releases: I did a clean install and I don't know if it was already there or if I may have changed something, but my "Control L" and "Caps Lock" keys are swapped. How to swap them back?   I'm writing a novel in which an evil programmer wants to include subtle errors in his code that are likely to go unnoticed by his supervisor during a code review and unlikely to be caught by a compiler, yet cause damage at possibly random times when the program is executed by an end-user. I only need a couple of examples, which may be exotic but which have to be easily explainable to non-technical readers. Procedural or object-oriented examples would be equally helpful. • Lining things up while using columns

  I have a request that may not be possible. I'd like to line up the elements of a form so that the inputs all start at the same place: Name: [ ] Company: [ ] Some question with a long name: [ ] But my list is (somewhat) long and I would like to show them in multiple columns on screens that are wide enough. Ideally, I'd find a POSH method (table-free is semantically appropriate, I think) that works on a reasonable number of browsers. My current page uses a table. I tried CSS with columns: auto; -moz-column-count: auto; -moz-column-width: auto; -webkit-column-count: auto; -webkit-column-width: auto; but Firefox (at least) won't break a table across columns.

• If I enable/disable my wireless device, my computer will panic

  Now, I use Debian 6.0.6 instead of Fedora 16/17. But I still sustain the problem of my wireless problem. If I enable/disable my laptop wireless device or my usb wifi adaptor, my laptop will panic. It seems like all the processes stop at that time and I have to restart my laptop directly. P.S. I think I installed the drivers correctly and the linux kernel may have some bugs. For example, when I unplug my usb wifi adaptor or I use this command, ifdown wlan0 I encounter this problem. • How to cross-compile programs for the Raspberry Pi with gcc?

  I am fond of using gcc to compile small little C and C++ programs on my main computer. However, I also have a Raspberry Pi, and, being a 700-MHz single-core computer, I would prefer to not have to do my development work on it every time I want to create a binary for it. How (for I know that there's a way) do I cross-compile my program for the Raspberry Pi using my x86 laptop? And is there a way that I may compile C(++) programs on the Pi but produce an x86 binary? If it's any help, "The SoC is a Broadcom BCM2835. This contains an ARM1176JZFS, with floating point..." (according to the official Raspberry Pi FAQ).

• Is someone aware of any multi threaded unrar program?

  I was searching in the past (past few weeks) for a program/software which is multithreaded and it is able to extract rarparts using multi threading. What software's i've already tried? unrar, unrar-nonfree, rar, 7zip It seemed to me that none of them is multi threaded and therefore they are all slow. The solution would be needed in cli format so if not necessary the no gui. Is someone aware of something like this? I asked on other irc's for suggestions and they told me, that the best is to write one myself. I may be agree with them, but i don't have these type of knowledge to achieve this task.

• 12.04 LTS won't install from CD

  I've been trying to install 12.04 LTS onto a Dell with a PIII from CD. Booting from the CD the install gets through the "Who are you" process, begins copying files. The progress bar gets as far as the last period in "Copying files...". The box clears, and an error box comes up "The installer has encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigae the problem or try installing again." When I try to install from this desktop session, the install gets to the same point, the copying files box closes, and then just stops. The pointer is busy, the cd drive spins up occaisonally with no data transfer, no hard drive activity. When I boot from the CD and access the disk boot menu, the disk checks good, memory checks good ( I upgraded the original memory to 512 mb). I also updated the bios to the newest from Dell. This is an older L866r, but should meet the requirements.

• fingerprint-gui can not recognize my upek reader (147e:1002)

  I've got a new laptop which is Lenove's E420s. And I have encountered a big problem that I can't make the fingerprint reader work properly. I've also tried fingerprint-gui. But unfortunately, it's told that "No Device Found". Here is my screenshot: http://ge.tt/98Xg2WD/v/0 It's said that 147e:1002 is supported by fingerprint-gui on the official website. So, I'm curious about the situation. Anybody knows? P.S: I'm using gentoo, but I think this problem may not have anything to do with distribution since I compiled the source from official site.

• Putting Ubuntu Server on to a networked HDD

  Firstly, I know very little about servers and secondly the 1Tb HDD I have has network capabilities, but no software is installed on it, so when connected to the computer it is seen as a network connection, but not as a drive. Any advice on how to get started would be great. Up until now, I have been using it as a USB drive which worked well, but when this is sorted, I would like it to be connected directly to our BT HomeHub accessible through the WiFi for all the family to use as a film and back up repository. I would then be able to set up individual accounts for each family member to use and may be, if possible, make it accessible from outside locations. The First question then is: How can I install Ubuntu server on the 1Tb HDD attached directly to the computers network port but which doesn't show up in Nautilus? • Logic behind crawling an webpages like that of Screaming Frog? [on hold]

  I would like to know what is the parameters to be considered while developing a crawler like that of Screaming Frog. Am looking forward for information on do's and dont's of webpage crawling. • Can I use the test suite from an open source project to verify that my own 'compatible library' is compatible?

  The question Is it illegal to rewrite every line of an open source project in a slightly different way, and use it in a closed source project? makes me wonder what would be considered a clean-room implementation in the era of open source projects. Hypothetically, if I were to develop a library which duplicates the publicly documented interface of an open-source library, without ever looking at the source code for that library, could that code ever be considered a derivative work? Obviously it would need the same class hierarchy and method signatures, so that it could be a drop-in replacement - could that in itself, be enough to provoke a copyright claim? What about if I used the test suite of the open source project to verify whether my clean implementation behaved in the same way as the original library? Would using the test suite be enough to dirty my clean code? As should be expected from a question like this, I am not looking for specific legal advice, but looking to document experiences people may have had with this sort of issue.

• How do I make the correct career decision in regards to product manager/QA vs programmer?

  I'm curious about how to approach the issue of whether I should focus on programming or on QA/testing/product management. I know that the latter seems like a broad category( if so, think of it as "general IT support" for now). At the moment I'm stronger in QA/prod. mgt ; however I'd like to switch more to programming, and I see I may have this opportunity. Wouldn't it be easier to switch to QA/prod. mgt in the future, if I go into programming now; rather than trying the reverse-order(i.e. if I decided later to go into coding.. say around mid-30s then it'd likely be harder). Just looking for any advice or tips about how to see more clearly. Part of me is scared I can't handle the programming side, but part of me says since there's demand and I'm interested that it's still worth a shot.
