How to configure mysqldump to avoid max_allowed_packet error

Honestly it baffles me that with a completely default installation of mysql if I run mysqldump with default parameters it generates a SQL file that can't be imported into another completely default installation of mysql. From what I can gather it's got something to do with the max_allowed_packet setting and/or the net_buffer_length setting. I've read a bunch about this, and tried tweaking it a bunch of ways on both the export and import sides, but it still doesn't work. I keep getting the packet too big error on import. From everything I've read, here's my best guess: mysqldump --net_buffer_length=50000 myschema > giant_file.sql Because I read here that mysqldump refers to max_allowed_packet as net_buffer_length because ... uhh ... anyway. Then to import mysql --max_allowed_packet=999999 myschema < giant_file.sql But this still doesn't work. How do I export / import the database???

Virus cleanup; Windows Automatic Updates service crashes in esent.dll

Background I'm doing system recovery on an old WinXP SP1 system brought to me on suspicion of virus infection. After taking preliminary backups, I used MalwareBytes to detect and clean the infection. I might've even gotten it all. In the process, I've discovered (a) the system drive is showing signs of impending failure, and (b) the owner has been using the system's old crusty IE-6 instead of the up-to-date Firefox I've provided for him. So naturally, thinking I had a relatively stable system, I tried to hit the Windows Update site to install IE-8, in case further training doesn't stick. The update site told me it needed to update the installer, and I started that process. Soon after, wuauclt.exe started crashing, reporting addresses in module esent.dll. There's a Microsoft KB (910437) on a problem with that DLL, so I downloaded the hotfix and installed. The crashing did not stop. I attempted to install SP3 from the offline installer, but that didn't fix the issue either. The system is reporting a few hard drive / IDE controller errors, but they don't correlate to the crashes, so they aren't the direct cause. I've also attempted to rollback to the time between the infection removal and the first crashes, but that doesn't help. Question The hotfix I tried to install dealt with problem in transaction logs of the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database. I suspect this issue is similar, but that the database itself (whatever the ESE database is) is corrupted. Is there a way to clean or clear this database so that system operation returns to normal? Can someone enlighten me as to what the ESE database actually is, and where it resides? Can I just locate some files and delete them to bring this under control?

conflicting info about the running kernel version in FreeBSD

I asked a related question about uname before, now want to ask from another angle because the following simple yet obvious conflicting outputs may mean there is something many people did not think of (me included). What could lead to the above conflict, and what kernel I am actually running? Please note I run RELEASE and ran freebsd-update to do binary update, so no compiled kernel is involved. And I have rebooted multiple times after freebsd-update. And the system is not in jail etc, just the only system on that computer.

Proftpd user-auth with mod_sql/mod_sql_passwd

I'm reading up how to interface ProFTPd with MySQL for an implementation I'm working on, I noticed it seems like all the example code or instructions I see have the user login field in MySQL set as "varchar(30)". I don't see anything saying there's a limit to the field length for ProFTPd, but I wanted to check around anyway. The project this setup is going to get mixed into was planning to have their universal usernames support "varchar(255)". Can I use that safely? or is there an FTP limitation elsewhere I'm missing? Running ProFTPd 1.3.4a(custom compiled), MySQL 5.1.54(ubuntu repos)

Ganglia divide colors by rolles

Sorry for a silly question I am still newbie to Ganglia. In Ganglia I control few important metrics for mysql (seconds behind master and etc.). In addition I have few bunches of mysql servers (every bunch has it's own tasks, but all of the bunches should be tested for seconds behind master). I am interested if this possible to show all metrics on the one page with different colors to different bunches. Right now in metric "seconds behind master" I see all mysql servers with metric "seconds behind master" with colors to different states (red is critical, gray is ok). Can I set a color to a graph according to it's bunch? Thanks!

Lingering database-connections from Feng Office

I've installed Feng Office on our main server which is working perfectly so far. Unfortunately it seems like there's a problem with the connection to the MySQL-Database. While the connection itself works fine, it's the reuse/pooling of connections which seems to be bugged. There are lingering/sleeping connections to the server from Feng Office which won't close and don't get reused after some time (120 seconds). Of course those lingering processes/connections are piling up pretty fast. I've found a thread at the forums about this behavior, but the suggested fix is already applied (by default). I'm sure this is just a configuration issue, but I'm a little clue less because Feng is besides a MediaWiki, a DokuWiki and homebrewed PHP applications the only one with this issue. The setup is a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server with MySQL 5.0.26 and Apache 2.2. Where can I start looking for clues why this is happening and how do I get rid of lingering MySQL-Connections?

Cannot Login To phpMyAdmin

I'm running a simple LAMP server at home from which I host a personal blog. The server is running Arch Linux, with the latest-and-greatest versions of Apache, MySQL, and PHP. In order to easily maintain the databases, I installed phpMyAdmin. However, I cannot login. If I were to SSH into the server and run mysql -u <user> -p <password>, no errors show up and I'm immediately placed into the MySQL prompt. No problem. However, when I try to log in with phpMyAdmin, using those exact same credentials, nothing happens. No errors, no nothing, I'm just redirected back to the login page. Did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance for any and all answers!

Unable to edit/delete/move /etc/my.cnf - Permission denied

I am trying to edit /etc/my.cnf as root user via ssh and I get following error while trying to save it I ma making changes to my.cnf as I want to tweak some values in my.cnf to meet Magento requirement like changing key_buffer_size= to higher value (128M). I assigned the value 128M to key_buffer_size= and tried to save it and then got an error. "Error writing /etc/my.cnf: Permission denied" I cant even restart MySQL successfully. [root@flourish ~]# service mysqld restart Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] I can even delete or replace it with the fresh one. I tried uninstalling MySQL and re-installing but nothing worked. Permission -rw-r--r-- and Owner/Group root/root I hope there is some answer to this problem.

Storing Windows Updates for reuse

At work we update lots of computers using Windows Update. Windows XP and 7 all day long, rarely some Vista. We do it through a corporate proxy, as connecting them to a domain to build a Wsus server is out of the question, so we download about two gigabytes a day of the very same updates everyday. I've tried WSUS Offline. It's pretty complete but when it finishes it's common to be still missing hundreds of megabytes of updates, because its intention is not to fully update a system but to install the critical updates, as the developers explain in the forums. Now I'm trying with Autoupdater. It's far worse, with poor capabilities for non-English Windows XP, but at least it gives the option to install non critical updates in Windows 7. It still misses hundres of megabytes of updates after fully updating the system. And finally, both doesn't install the driver related updates of Windows 7, so they at most save us a couple of hundreds of megabytes and a reboot (with the associated login to the computer and to the proxy) out of three or four. So, is it possible to somewhat extract the installed updates in a Windows 7 system and not having to download the same updates again and again at least with machines with the same hardware? Or even better, a generic package with all the updates?

Difference between key_buffers and recommendation

I'm looking to add a bit of memory to MySQL on a Linode VPS server on which I've got a small facebook (canvas app) PHP app using MySQL running. I'm not super familiar with MySQL optimization so I'm hoping to find a simple answer. I think I want to increase the key_buffer size (the default is 16M) to something like 32M to start, but I'm not sure if I need to tweak anything else as well. All I've done so far is increase the query_cache_size to 32M from 16M. There's also key_buffer under [mysqld] and key_buffer under [isamchk]. What are the difference between those two? If I have Linode 2048MB (http://www.linode.com) VPS, what would recommend I set the buffers to? I don't expect this site to have tons of visitors, but I'd like it to be as optimized as possible. Definitely way more heavy on the database access than PHP and very few HTTP requests.

I have to process like 10-100 millions records. I have to give the data to the client when it's finish. The data is givent as SQL requests to execute in the database. He have a powerful server with MySQL, I think it will be fast enough. The issue is my computer is not as powerful as his server, so I would like to use an other SQL server who is compatible (I export his database and import it in my computer) with MySQL but more powerful. What should I use? Or am I doomed to use MySQL?

Hello All, I would like some help understanding web-server directory permissions. Apache, CentOS, PHP, Mysql Example, I have multiple sites in /var/www/html They are in paths like: /var/www/html/www_domainname_com inside each site I might have a path like /lib/mysql/ like PHP connect stuff, database config, etc. What should me permissions be so that someone cannot just browse to that directory? Should I just .htaccess them? I have apache:apache as the owner of all my web directories. Can I prevent someone from crawling certain directories of my web-server? I have a robots.txt, but what is to say the crawler obeys it? So to sum up: 1. What is the best owner/permission set for my sensitive files that the web-server or php or mysql needs, but I dont want people browsing to? Can I prevent straight out crawling of portions?

my.ini optimization on Windows 2008 R2 VPS

I have a vmware VPS running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise that has performance issues with MySQL. Every few minutes, MySQL stall for few seconds then responed to queries. I'm sure that my.ini need to be optimized, but unfortunately, I don't have any idea of my.ini configuration. Using a join with three tables when a field might be null

Hello, The code below works great. It combines data from two MySQL tables. I would like to modify it by pulling in some data from a third MySQL table called "comment." In the HTML table below, "title" is a field in the MySQL table "submission." Every "title" has a corresponding "submissionid" field. The field "submissionid" is also found in the "comment" MySQL table. In the HTML table below, I would like "countComments" to equal the number of times a field called "commentid" appears in the MySQL table "comment" for any given "submissionid," where the "submissionid" is the same in both the "submission" and "comment" tables, and where the "submissionid" corresponds to the "title" being used. Here's the catch: if there is no row in the MySQL table "comment" that corresponds with the "submissionid" being used for "table", I would like "countComments" to equal to zero. How can I do this? I am designing a map game, using PHP and MYSQL. I don't know how to make the players who sign-in to the website to see other players who are also connected to the site and be able to chat with one another. I want to design the game in such a way that 2 players can play with each other and be able to send messages during the game while others groups are playing at the same time. Ubuntu 13.10 gives "Package 'libapache2-mod-auth-mysql' has no installation candidate" error

I'm trying to install my LAMP environment on Ubuntu 13.10 using my script file that can be found here. That script worked for Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 13.04 but when I try it on Ubuntu 13.10 it gives the following error: E: Package 'libapache2-mod-auth-mysql' has no installation candidate Any idea on how to fix this? Note, I do want this package to be installed. EDIT: I've found out now that the reason this could not be installed was because it needed the following two packages that were missing: libmysqlclient16 and apache2.2-common. Do I just need to install these packages or were they removed for a reason?

I have previously talked about Visual NHibernate. It has grown since last time, now offering support for multiple databases (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Firebird), generates projects from existing databases or from existing Visual Studio projects and produces XML or Fluent mappings, to name just a few. To me it is by far the most interesting tools for working with NHibernate I know of (granted, I haven't tried NHibernate Profiler). How to update a game off a database

I am currently writing a sports strategy management game (cricket) in PHP, with a MYSQL database, and I have come across one stumbling block - how do I update games where neither player is online? Cricket is a game played between two players, and when they (or one of them) is online then everything is fine; but what if neither player is online? This occurs when championship games are played, and these games need to happen at certain times for game reasons. At the moment I have a private web page that updates every 5 seconds, and each time it loads all games are updated; but then I have the problem that when my private web page stops (for example my computer crashes or my web browser plays up) the game stops updating! Any suggestions?

Hello, I've started doing some research on the technologies that I will need for my website. I'm trying to implement a really simple website with OpenID user registration. The website will store a block of text for each user. I imagine this means that I will need a database with: User ID Open ID url Data Having said that, I'm still having trouble deciding what I really need to do this. I know that I will need the following for the actual site: Javascript JQuery CSS But on the back end, I'm kind of lost at the moment. I've been looking at the OpenID-Selector, which is coded in Javascript. It seems like it's exactly what is used on this site. Will I actually need PHP? MySQL for the data and user registration?
