• Determining unknown content-types with the Html5 file api

  I'm working through a small file upload script (learning experience) and I noticed that when selecting microsoft office related files (.doc or .docx for example) the file objects do not have a type specified: For .doc files I had expected the type to be "application/msword" and along the same train of thought .docx to be "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document". In the cases when the type cannot be determined is the correct course of action to look at the file extension and match that to the "expected" content / mime type? • interface abstract in php real world scenario

  The goal is to learn whether to use abstract or interface or both... I'm designing a program which allows a user to de-duplicate all images but in the process rather then I just build classes I'd like to build a set of libraries that will allow me to re-use the code for other possible future purposes. In doing so I would like to learn interface vs abstract and was hoping someone could give me input into using either. Here is what the current program will do: recursive scan directory for all files determine file type is image type compare md5 checksum against all other files found and only keep the ones which are not duplicates Store total duplicates found at the end and display size taken up Copy files that are not duplicates into folder by date example Year, Month folder with filename is file creation date. While I could just create a bunch of classes I'd like to start learning more on interfaces and abstraction in php. So if I take the scan directory class as the first example I have several methods... ScanForFiles($path) FindMD5Checksum() FindAllImageTypes() getFileList() The scanForFiles could be public to allow anyone to access it and it stores in an object the entire directory list of files found and many details about them. example extension, size, filename, path, etc... The FindMD5Checksum runs against the fileList object created from scanForFiles and adds the md5 if needed. The FindAllImageTypes runs against the fileList object as well and adds if they are image types. The findmd5checksum and findallimagetypes are optionally run methods because the user might not intend to run these all the time or at all. The getFileList returns the fileList object itself. While I have a working copy I've revamped it a few times trying to figure out whether I need to go with an interface or abstract or both. I'd like to know how an expert OO developer would design it and why?

• Checking if a function has C-linkage at compile-time [unsolvable]

  Is there any way to check if a given function is declared with C-linkage (that is, with extern "C") at compile-time? I am developing a plugin system. Each plugin can supply factory functions to the plugin-loading code. However, this has to be done via name (and subsequent use of GetProcAddress or dlsym). This requires that the functions be declared with C-linkage so as to prevent name-mangling. It would be nice to be able to throw a compiler error if the referred-to function is declared with C++-linkage (as opposed to finding out at runtime when a function with that name does not exist). • Serving files (800MB) results in an empty file

When I step in to trace the problem, I found out that when I do the _session.flush() right after _session.delete(), it throws the exception, and if I look at the sql it does, it is actually submitting a "INSERT INTO" statement, which is exactly the sql that cause UNIQUE CONSTRAINT error. I tried to encapsulate both in transaction but still same problem happens. Anyone know the reason?

• [PHP] Associating a Function to Fire on session_start()?

  Hi, I've searched the web but haven't been able to find a solution to the following challenge: I'd like to somehow associate a function that executes when session_start is called independent of the page session_start is called in. The function is intended to restore constants I've stored in $_SESSION using get_defined_constants() so that they're available again to any PHP page. This seems so straightforward to me but I'm pretty sure the PHP Session extension doesn't support the registration of user-defined events. I was wondering if anyone might have insight into this issue so I can either figure out the solution or stop trying. Ideally, I'd like to just register the function at run-time like so: $constants = get_defined_constants(); $_SESSION["constants"] = $constants["user"]; function event_handler () { foreach ($_SESSION["constants"] as $key => $value) { define($key, $value); } } register_handler("session_start", "event_handler"); So in any webpage, I could just go: session_start(); and all my constants would be available again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Problem with video playback on iPad with MPMoviePlayerViewController

  Hello everybody... I have been fighting some code for about a week, and am hoping that someone else may have experienced this problem and can point me in the right direction. I am using the MPMoviePlayerViewController to play a video on the iPad. The primary problem is that it works FLAWLESSLY on the iPad Simulator, but will not play at all on the iPad. I have tried re-encoding the video to make sure that isn't an issue. The video I'm using is currently a 480x360 video encoded with H.264 Basline 3.0 with AAC/LC audio. The video plays fine on the iPhone, and also does play through Safari on the iPad. The video actually loads, and you can scrub through the video with the scrubber bar and see that it is there. The frames actually display, but just will not play. If you click play, it just immediately stops. Even when I have mp.moviePlayer.shouldAutoplay=YES set, you can see the player attempt to play, but only for a split second (maybe 1 frame?). • IE7 not digesting JSON: "parse error" [resolved]

  While trying to GET a JSON, my callback function is NOT firing. $.ajax({ type:"GET", dataType:'json', url: myLocalURL, data: myData, success: function(returned_data){alert('success');} }); The strangest part of this is that my JSON(s) validates on JSONlint this ONLY fails on IE7...it works in Safari, Chrome, and all versions of Firefox, (EDIT: and even in IE8). If I use 'error', then it reports "parseError"...even though it validates! Is there anything that I'm missing? Does IE7 not process certain characters, data structures (my data doesn't have anything non-alphanumeric, but it DOES have nested JSONs)? I have used tons of other AJAX calls that all work (even in IE7), but with the exception of THIS call. An example data return (EDIT: This is a structurally-complete example, meaning it is only missing a few second-tier fields, but follows this exact hierarchy)here is: {"question":{ "question_id":"19", "question_text":"testing", "other_crap":"none" }, "timestamp":{ "response":"answer", "response_text":"the text here" } } I am completely at a loss. Hopefully someone has some insight into what's going on...thank you! EDIT Here's a copy of the SIMPLEST case of dummy data that I'm using...it still doesn't work in IE7. { "question":{ "question_id":"20", "question_text":"testing :", "adverse_party":"none", "juris":"California", "recipients":"Carl Chan" } } EDIT 2 I am starting to doubt that it is a JSON issue...but I have NO idea what else it could be. ANSWER I finally managed to figure it out...mostly via tedious trial-and-error. I want to thank everyone for their suggestions...as soon as I have 15 rep, I'll upvote you, I promise. :) There was basically no way that you guys could have figured it out, because the issue turned out to be a strange bug between IE7 and Django (my research didn't bring up any similar issues). We were basically using Django template language to generate our JSON...and in the midst of this particular JSON, we were using custom template tags: {% load customfilter %} { "question":{ "question_id":"{{question.id}}", "question_text":"{{question.question_text|customfilterhere}}" } } As soon as I deleted anything related to the customfilter, IE7 was able to parse the JSON perfectly! • jQuery doesn't work in IE8?

  Hi, I am working on a site here: mfm.treethink.net All the jquery works fine in Firefox, Chrome and Safari but on IE8 it gives me errors and the banner at the top doesn't work (which uses the crossSlide jQuery plugin) and as well the image rollovers don't work with the colour change. IE8 is telling me that the errors are on lines 53, 134 and 149 in the source, all of those lines are where the jquery function is declared. $(document).ready(function(){ I am running jquery 1.4. Oddly enough, the other piece of jQuery I have on that page works, the artist browse/select menu on the right. But the banner and image rollovers don't. • WebKit "Refused to set unsafe header "content-length"

  I am trying to implement simple xhr abstraction, and am getting this warning when trying to set the headers for a POST. I think it might have something to do with setting the headers in a separate js file, because when i set them in the <script> tag in the .html file, it worked fine. The POST request is working fine, but I get this warning, and am curious why. I get this warning for both content-length and connection headers, but only in WebKit browsers (Chrome 5 beta and Safari 4). In Firefox, I don't get any warnings, the Content-Length header is set to the correct value, but the Connection is set to keep-alive instead of close, which makes me think that it is also ignoring my setRequestHeader calls and generating it's own. I have not tried this code in IE. • problem with sIFR 3 not displaying in IE just getting XXX

  I am having a problem with sIFR 3 not displaying in IE. I get 3 larges black XXX in IE yet it displays fine in Firefox. I have checked i do have the most recent version of flash installed correctly. I'm observing the same problem on Firefox/Chrome/Safari/Opera. IE6 (the crazy one) seems happy all the time. This also doesn't seem dependent on quirks/standards mode. Update I've done further testing to observe that max-width seems to get ignored when the element has a float: left. I glanced at the W3C box model chapter but couldn't immediately see an explicit mention of this behaviour. Any pointers?

If I log in, the dialog box gets redirected to my Connect URL, but there's no fb cookie, so of course nothing works. What am I doing wrong here?

• 100% width table cell

  Hello! I have this table layout. I want to align the whole content to the right. So i'm using one cell with width: 100%;. Usually everything looks good and nice. But there is something, which i don't understand. If the content in cell, which has colspan, becomes bigger than normal cell in this column (you can test this by clicking Click to test button), it brakes whole layout. This happens on Chrome, Safari 4 and 5, IE8, but on Opera, FF and IE7 is OK.   I am trying append some XML retrieved via a dojo.XHRGet to a dijit.layout.ContentPane. Everything works ok in Firefox (3.6) but in Chrome, I only get back 'undefined' in the particular ContentPane. • Authorizing a computer to access a web application

  I have a web application, and am tasked with adding secure sign-on to bolster security, akin to what Google has added to Google accounts. Use Case Essentially, when a user logs in, we want to detect if the user has previously authorized this computer. If the computer has not been authorized, the user is sent a one-time password (via email, SMS, or phone call) that they must enter, where the user may choose to remember this computer. In the web application, we will track authorized devices, allowing users to see when/where they logged in from that device last, and deauthorize any devices if they so choose. We require a solution that is very light touch (meaning, requiring no client-side software installation), and works with Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and IE 7+ (unfortunately). We will offer x509 security, which provides adequate security, but we still need a solution for customers that can't or won't use x509. My intention is to store authorization information using cookies (or, potentially, using local storage, degrading to flash cookies, and then normal cookies). At First Blush Track two separate values (local data or cookies): a hash representing a secure sign-on token, as well as a device token. Both values are driven (and recorded) by the web application, and dictated to the client. The SSO token is dependent on the device as well as a sequence number. This effectively allows devices to be deauthorized (all SSO tokens become invalid) and mitigates replay (not effectively, though, which is why I'm asking this question) through the use of a sequence number, and uses a nonce. Problem With this solution, it's possible for someone to just copy the SSO and device tokens and use in another request. While the sequence number will help me detect such an abuse and thus deauthorize the device, the detection and response can only happen after the valid device and malicious request both attempt access, which is ample time for damage to be done. I feel like using HMAC would be better. Track the device, the sequence, create a nonce, timestamp, and hash with a private key, then send the hash plus those values as plain text. Server does the same (in addition to validating the device and sequence) and compares. That seems much easier, and much more reliable.... assuming we can securely negotiate, exchange, and store private keys. Question So then, how can I securely negotiate a private key for authorized device, and then securely store that key? Is it more possible, at least, if I settle for storing the private key using local storage or flash cookies and just say it's "good enough"? Or, is there something I can do to my original draft to mitigate the vulnerability I describe?

  I have an AppEngine application that uses the blobstore to store user-provided image data. When I upload images to that application from a form in Chrome it works fine. When I try to upload an image from an Android application it fails. Both methods work fine if I am running against the development server, but the Android upload doesn't work against the live service. • IE won't load PDF in a window created with window.open

  Here's the problem, which only occurs in Internet Explorer (IE). I have a page that has links to several different types of files. Links from these files execute a Javascript function that opens a new window and loads the specific file. This works great, unless the file I need to open in the new window is a PDF in which case the window is blank, even though the URL is in the address field. Refreshing that window using F5 doesn't help. However, if I put the cursor in the address field and press <enter> the PDF loads right up. This problem only occurs in IE. I have seen it in IE 7 and 8 and am using Adobe Acrobat Reader 9. In Firefox (PC and Mac) everything works perfectly. In Chrome (Mac), the PDF is downloaded. In Safari (Mac) it works. In Opera (Mac) it prompts me to open or save. Basically, everything probably works fine, except for IE. I have searched for similar problems and have seen some posts where it was suggested to adjust some of the Internet Options on IE. I have tried this but it doesn't help, and the problem wasn't exactly the same anyway. Here's the Javascript function I use to open the new window. function newwin(url,w,h) { win = window.open(url,"temp","width="+w+",height="+h+",menubar=yes,toolbar=yes,location=yes,status=yes,scrollbars=auto,resizable=yes"); win.focus(); } You can see that I pass in the URL as well as the height, h, and width, w, of the window. I call the newwin() function using this. <a href="javascript:newwin('/path/document.pdf',400,300)">document.pdf</a> (Yes, I know there are other, better ways than using inline JS, and I've even tried some of them because I've run out of things to try, but nothing works.) So, if anyone has an idea as to what might be causing this problem, I'd love to hear it.

• Opera Mobile, offline web app development, and memory

  I'm developing a data collection app for use on a HP iPAQ 211. I'm doing it as an offline web app (go with what you know) using Opera Mobile 9.7 and Google Gears. Being it is an offline app, it is very dependent on Javascript for much of its behavior. I'm using the LocalServer, Database, and Geolocation components of Gears, as well as the JQuery core and a couple of plugins for form validation and other usability tweaks (no jQuery UI). I've tried to be conservative with my programming style and free up or close resources whenever possible, but Opera just slowly dies after about 10-20 minutes of use. The Javascript engine stops responding, pages only half-load, and eventually stop loading completely. I'm guessing it's a resource issue. Quitting and relaunching the browser solves the problem, but only temporarily. The iPAQ ships with 128 MB of RAM, about 85-87 MB of which is available immediately after a reset. With only Opera running, there still remains about 50 MB that is left unused. My questions are thus: Is it possible to get Opera to address this unused RAM? Are there configuration settings in Opera or in the Windows Registry itself that will help improve performance? I know where to tweak, but the descriptions of the opera:config variables that I've found are less than helpful. Is is laughable to ask about memory management and jQuery in the same sentence? If not, does anyone have any suggestions? Finally, are my plans too ambitious, given the platform I have to work with? I know that Gears and Windows Mobile 6 are on their way out, but they (theoretically) suffice for what I need to do. I could ditch them in favor of an iPhone/iPod Touch, Mobile Safari, and HTML5 but I'd like to try to make this work first. I didn't think that Opera was a dog when it comes to JS performance, but perhaps it's worse than I thought. That this motley collection of technologies works at all is a minor miracle, but it needs to be faster and more stable. I appreciate any suggestions.

  i wonder how i could store a xml structure in a persistence layer. cause the relational data looks like: <entity id="1000070"> <name>apple</name> <entities> <entity id="7002870"> <name>mac</name> <entities> <entity id="7002907"> <name>leopard</name> <entities> <entity id="7024080"> <name>safari</name> </entity> <entity id="7024701"> <name>finder</name> </entity> </entities> </entity> </entities> </entity> <entity id="7024080"> <name>iphone</name> <entities> <entity id="7024080"> <name>3g</name> </entity> <entity id="7024701"> <name>3gs</name> </entity> </entities> </entity> <entity id="7024080"> <name>ipad</name> </entity> </entities> </entity> as you can see, it has no static structure but a dynamical one. mac got 2 descendant levels while iphone got 1 and ipad got 0. i wonder how i could store this data the best way? what are my options. cause it seems impossible to store it in a mysql database due to this dynamical structure. is the only way to store it as a xml file then? is the speed of getting information (xpath/xquery/simplexml) from a xml file worse or greater than from mysql? what are the pros and cons? do i have other options? is storing information in xml files, suited for a lot of users accessing it at the same time? would be great with feedbacks!! thanks!

  How can I detect page zoom level in all modern browsers? While this thread tells how to do it in IE7 and IE8, I can't find good solution for FF, Safari and Chrome. For FF one of the suggested solution FF stores page zoom level for future. So on first page load would I be able to get zoom level? Somewhere I read it works if you're changing zoom level on that page after its loaded. Is there a way to trap 'zoom' event? I need this because some of my calculations are based on no of pixels and they get changed on Zoom. Thanks. Modified sample given by tfl.
