• Understanding pattern matching with cons operator

  In "Programming F#" I came across a pattern-matching like this one (I simplified a bit): let rec len list = match list with | [] -> 0 | [_] -> 1 | head :: tail -> 1 + len tail;; Practically, I understand that the last match recognizes the head and tail of the list. Conceptually, I don't get why it works. As far as I understand, :: is the cons operator, which appends a value in head position of a list, but it doesn't look to me like it is being used as an operator here. Should I understand this as a "special syntax" for lists, where :: is interpreted as an operator or a "match pattern" depending on context? Or can the same idea be extended for types other than lists, with other operators?

• MOSS Collect Data from user custom email

  Hi, I am trying to send out a custom email, after the Collect Data from user step in my primary workflow which starts when an item in list X is created. I have created a secondary workflow to start when a new Task item is created (this is created by the Collect Data from user action in the primary workflow). But I am having problem how I retrieve the information on the list X. I know the ID of the referenced item in List X is stored in a URL within the "Link" column in the Tasks lists. But can't see any string manipulation function that will grab this ID so I can use it to link back to relevant item in List X. Is there an easier way to do this? Many Thanks, Nav

• Python unicode issues (2.6)

  I'm currently working on a irc bot for a multi-lingual channel, and I'm encountering some issues with unicode which are proving nearly impossible to solve. No matter what configuration of unicode encoding I seem to try, the list function which the below code sits within just flat out does nothing (c.notice is a class function which sends a NOTICE command to the irc server) or when it does do something, spits out something which obviously isn't encoded. The command should be sending ??, but instead it seems hellbent on sending å¤©å­ with a previous configuration of the same commands. The one I have specified below is of the 'send nothing' variety. I haven't worked with unicode before this, and thus I am quite stuck. I'm also positive that I'm doing this completely wrong as a consequence.   I am trying to create a database of users with connection between users (friends list). There are 2 main tables: UserEntity (main field id) and FriendEntity with fields: - initiatorId - id of user who initiated the friendship - friendId - id of user who has been invited. Now I am trying to fetch all friends of one particular user and encountered some problems with using subqueries in JDO here. • Best way to access database from android

  I am working on a Android app and I have a dilemma. I have a list of Objects. I have to update each of these objects with a database. I have 2 methods: Method 1: I can loop through the Objects. For each object I can connect to the server, update it, and then move on to the next Object, and so forth. Method 2: I can store the Objects in a list, send the whole list to the server, update it on the server side, then return a list of updated objects. My questions are: Which method is faster? Which method is easier on the phone's battery? By the way, Method 1 is easier for me to code :). Thank you.

• Efficient mass string search problem.

  The Problem: A large static list of strings is provided. A pattern string comprised of data and wildcard elements (* and ?). The idea is to return all the strings that match the pattern - simple enough. Current Solution: I'm currently using a linear approach of scanning the large list and globbing each entry against the pattern. My Question: Are there any suitable data structures that I can store the large list into such that the search's complexity is less than O(n)? Perhaps something akin to a suffix-trie? I've also considered using bi- and tri-grams in a hashtable, but the logic required in evaluating a match based on a merge of the list of words returned and the pattern is a nightmare, and I'm not convinced its the correct approach.

• Problem in loading cities using JSON

  I am using Geonames for loading the cities using JSON. Geonames data i imported into my database. I am using MS SQL 2008 Server. I display a dropdown for country select. Once the user select the country. I am loading all the cities into the autocomplete textbox. I am facing a delay in the getJSON method. Also it seems like executing asynchronous. So before getting all the data my autocompelte is getting filled. Below is my complete script. I think i have some problem in the loop.   Hi all, I have some fairly generic code which uses preprocessor macros to add a certain prefix onto other macros. This is a much simplified example of what happens: #define MY_VAR(x) prefix_##x "prefix_" is actually defined elsewhere, so it will be different each time the file is included. It works well, but now I have some code I would like to skip if one of the tokens doesn't exist, but this doesn't work: #if defined MY_VAR(hello) What I want it to expand to is this: #ifdef prefix_hello But I can't figure out how. I need to use the MY_VAR() macro to do the expansion, so I can't just hardcode the name. (It's actually for some testing code, the same code gets included with a different prefix each time to test a bunch of classes, and I want to skip a couple of tests for a handful of the classes.) Is this possible with the C++ preprocessor?

  Currently, I'm using a strategy found on many blog posts. Basically, the URL contains the page number (e.g. /Users/List/5 will give you the users on page 5 of your paged list of users). However, I'm not running into a situation where one page must list two separate paged lists. How do I go about doing this using ASP.NET MVC? Do I simply provide two url parameters (e.g. /Users/List?page1=1&page2=2)? Is there a better way by using partial views?

  I'm currently working on a Haskell project which automatically tests some functions based on an XML specification. The XML specification gives the arguments to each function and the expected result that the function will provide (the arguments are of many different types). I know how to extract the function arguments from the XML and parse them using the read function, but I haven't figured out how to invoke the function using the arguments I get out. What I basically want is to read and store the arguments in a heterogeneous list (my current thinking is to use a list of type Data.Dynamic) and then invoke the function, passing this heterogeneous list as its argument list. Is this possible? Modifying the functions under test is not an option.

• How do you efficiently bulk index lookups?

  I have these entity kinds: Molecule Atom MoleculeAtom Given a list(molecule_ids) whose lengths is in the hundreds, I need to get a dict of the form {molecule_id: list(atom_ids)}. Likewise, given a list(atom_ids) whose length is in the hunreds, I need to get a dict of the form {atom_id: list(molecule_ids)}. Both of these bulk lookups need to happen really fast. Right now I'm doing something like: atom_ids_by_molecule_id = {} for molecule_id in molecule_ids: moleculeatoms = MoleculeAtom.all().filter('molecule =', db.Key.from_path('molecule', molecule_id)).fetch(1000) atom_ids_by_molecule_id[molecule_id] = [ MoleculeAtom.atom.get_value_for_datastore(ma).id() for ma in moleculeatoms ] Like I said, len(molecule_ids) is in the hundreds. I need to do this kind of bulk index lookup on almost every single request, and I need it to be FAST, and right now it's too slow. Ideas: Will using a Molecule.atoms ListProperty do what I need? Consider that I am storing additional data on the MoleculeAtom node, and remember it's equally important for me to do the lookup in the molecule-atom and atom-molecule directions. Caching? I tried memcaching lists of atom IDs keyed by molecule ID, but I have tons of atoms and molecules, and the cache can't fit it. How about denormalizing the data by creating a new entity kind whose key name is a molecule ID and whose value is a list of atom IDs? The idea is, calling db.get on 500 keys is probably faster than looping through 500 fetches with filters, right?
