• Why is there still so much offer for Perl programmers?

  A quick search on monster.com on different scripting languages resulted on Perl having much more job opportunities than Python and Ruby (in Europe, I didn't check for the rest of the world), and since I'm just a newbie programmer I was wondering why is this? I've read everywhere that Python and Ruby are much better languages, and much more organized. Having coded in python and php myself, Perl's code seems so alien to me. Anyways, sorry for my poor English, it's my second language, and this is not a critique on the Perl language, I was just wondering whether it's a good idea to learn it at this point or not.

• In which cases Robolectric is a relevant solution?

  As you may now, Robolectric is a framework that provides stubs for Android objects, in order to make tests runnable outside the Dalvik environment. My concern is that, by doing this, one can fake a third party library, which is, I believe, not a good practice (it should be encapsulated instead). If you make assumptions about an interface you don't own, which is changed once your test has been written, you won't be always noticed about the modifications. This can lead to a misunderstanding between your implementations and the interface they depends on. In addition, Android use mostly inheritance over interfaces which limits contract testing.   hi, I'm using magento 1.4.0 and when I try to get to magento connect and download a plugin the page will say Error: Please check for sufficient write file permissions Your Magento folder does not have sufficient write permissions, which this web based downloader requires. If you wish to proceed downloading Magento packages online, please set all Magento folders to have writable permission for the web server user (example: apache) and press the "Refresh" button to try again. does anyone know how I can fix this problem, thanks Update: the plugin I'm trying to use is MagentoPycho light box so I unpacked the folder into the app/code/local but it still doesn't show in the admin area

  I got a couple of questions about Agentless asset management: "What does agentless management do for an asset?" Agentless management is one of the two ways that you can manage an operating system. Rather than installing an Agent Controller on the OS, agentless management uses SSH to regularly check the system and gather monitoring data. Many of the actions that would be available on an agent-managed system are available on an agentless system, but actions such as running reports or updating an Oracle Solaris 10 or Linux OS are not available. A table showing the capabilities of agentless management is here. "What permissions does agentless management require?" Agentless management still requires root credentials. If you can't log into the system as root, you can provide one set of credentials for the login, and then a set of root credentials to switch to.

• How do software updates work on Ubuntu?

  I would like to know how software updates work for my Ubuntu Server 10.10. I have been recommended to use apt-get install for installing new software and apt-get update for updating software for a Ubuntu Server in production use. Because these packages are tested for Ubuntu in contrast to download source code and compile the software on the box. But on my Ubuntu Server 10.10, I don't get the latest stable version of PostgreSQL (9) or the latest stable version of Nginx (8) using apt-get install. So how is this working, will these software be updated when I later run apt-get update or do I have to later run apt-get install again, or do I have to wait for the next release of Ubuntu to get them? And are patches and security updates managed in the same way? Or can they be updated automatically? If there is such a setting, how do I check what my system is using?

• Finding Those Pesky Unicode Characters in Visual Studio

  Sometimes I’m handed HTML that I need to wire up and I find these characters.  Usually there are only a couple on the page and, while annoying to find, it’s not a big deal.  Recently I found dozens and dozens of these guys on a page and wasn’t very happy at the prospect of having to manually search them all out and remove/replace them.  That is, until I did some research and found this very  helpful article by Aaron Jensen - Finding Non-ASCII Characters with Visual Studio. Aaron’s wonderful solution: Try searching your code with the following regular expression: [^\x00-\x7f] Open any of Visual Studio’s find windows and enter the regular expression above into the “Find what:” text box. Click the “Find Options” plus sign to expand the list of options. Check the last box “Use:” and choose “Regular expressions” from the drop down menu. Easy and efficient.  Thanks, Aaron!

  Nowadays browsers and content management systems all have the plugin/module/addon/theme systems for users to extend at their own will. Developers can also submit plugin to share the plugin with others. The most famous examples are Firefox Addon and Wordpress Plugin Directory. I want to ask that if there is an open source web system specifically designed for this need - to host plugins? Not just one plugin, but all plugins for one software? Ideally it should allow developers to upload the plugin, have a public version for each update, and client software can check if there are any plugin available through the directory's API. As an example, a CMS can have one such directory to host/display theme files. Also is there a better keyword to describe this kind of system?

I could not play Silkroad online, so i asked Google and I found that there's application named Wine, and I found some commands to run in the Terminal, to install it. I did all that successfully. Then I tried to start the game, via wine, and I got this error. Now I don't know what I should do. On Youtube I saw players that can play Silkroad on Ubuntu without problems.   i have installed nagios core 4 on ubuntu server 12.04 lts.. everything working fine,, but... i have a problem with remote command to a remote linux (ubuntu server 12.04) pc! when i try to check a service, for example: check_swap, check_disk etc.. i got everytime an error: Remote command execution failed: /home/nagios/plugins/check_disk: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.14' not found (required by /home/nagios/plugins/check_disk) the remote pc is not my pc and i don't want to make a disaster! :) So... how can i fix this problem? any help be appreciate!!! ;) thanks in advance! :)

• Single click handler for all buttons in Javascript? Is it a pattern? Whats the benefit?

  I have been told that when there are multiple buttons on the page for same purpose but targeting different item e.g. delete item on a grid of items, they say it is recommended to just register for click handler only on the top most element like 'body' and check what was clicked instead of hooking up click with every delete button. Whats the benefit of this? Creating more handlers causes problems? Is it an optimization of some sort? Is it a pattern? Does it have anything to do with performance? Where can I read more about it?

• Ubuntu One using 500 MB memory also when idle

  I'm a Dropbox convert (I hope!), but after having used Ubuntu One for a couple of weeks I notice a few differences from Dropbox. The most glaring difference is that the sync daemon constantly takes 500MB ram on my system (Ubuntu 12.04 x64). It hogs this amount of memory as soon as I log in, does it's initial sync/check but keeps the memory. All in all it seems to me that Ubuntu One uses more system resources than Dropbox. I am syncing the same folders and files with Ubuntu One as I was with Dropbox. Also, afte I log in Ubuntu One grids at 100% CPU for at least five minutes which can be annoying on a laptop, but is not a showstopper. I'm wondering if this is a problem on my system, or if Ubuntu One is expected to use that amount of memory even when idle?

• Low coupling processing big quantities of data

  Usually I achieve low coupling by creating classes that exchange lists, sets, and maps between them. Now I am developing a batch application and I can't put all the data inside a data structure because there isn't enough memory. I have to read and process one chunk of data and then going to the next one. So having low coupling is much more difficult because I have to check somewhere if there is still data to read, etc. What I am using now is: Source - Process - Persist The classes that process have to ask to the Source classes if there are more rows to read. What are the best practices and or useful patterns in such situations? I hope I am explaining myself, if not tell me.

• How do I point a new domain to start on a page that's not index.html on separate hosting?

  I'm using a service (CMS/Host) called SquareSpace to host my site, and today I'm registering the domain for it. Basically, how do I make it so when somebody types www.tedxoxford.com it points at http://www.tedxoxford.com/landing (currently http://tedxoxford.squarespace.com/landing) instead of the default index? Is this possible? Squarespace is quite a restricted CMS and means that your logos etc all point to the index so I don't want people ending up on my landing/splash page every time they want the home page, only on the first time they type in the URL. A dirty hack would be to check the refferer and redirect anyone hitting the index to the landing page, but that's a lot of loading overhead I'd rather avoid...
