• How do I resize partitions using the simple installation wizard (installing a second Ubuntu)?

  I'm running 11.10 and installing 12.04 LTS Beta 1 off a DVD. Using the installation wizard, I picked "Install 12.04 LTS alongside 11.10". I am presented with a slider with approx 240GB on the left side and 60GB on the right. No other labels are present. I don't want to use the advanced partitioning tool. Which side is which Ubuntu? If it's relevant: I am installing only for testing purposes (I've been caught by kernel regressions before), so I want to give 12.04 the minimal amount of space required. Once the final release is made, and I've tested that too, my plan is to remove the second partition and upgrade 11.10 to 12.04.

• XP, how to apply security to files, now have simple file sharing and can't access some files from other machines ?

  For a month or two now I've been using simple file sharing, for several months before that I didn't, then before that I had simple file sharing tuned on. So at the moment I don't have a security tab (on files or folders) or sharing permissions settings there too. As an example, from another machine, I can access files from 2007 but not from the summer of last year in the same folder. I can access all files on that local machine. So I think I just need to re-apply security or permissions somehow? What should I do?

  Basically I have a Ubuntu Server machine and I would like an idiot-proof solution for sending emails from my website that is also running in this same machine. My doubts are: 1) Should I use postfix or there are more simple solutions for an smtp server? 2) Do I need to be able to receive emails as well? I just want to send emails... 3) I did I simple test with postfix that came with my Ubuntu server and the email got sent, but it went to the spam box of my gmail. So I'll post the reply here as a quote and reply on it. 'Steven' asks: What would the future be for LLBLGen Pro to support JSON for serialization? Would it be worth the effort for a LLBLGenPro user to bother creating some code templates to produce additional JSON serializable classes? Or just create some basic POCO classes which could be used for exchange of client/server data and use DTO to map these back to LLBGenPro ones? If I understand the work around, it is at the expense of losing xml serialization. Well, as described in the previous post, to enable JSON serialization, you can do that with a couple of lines and some attribute assignments. However, indeed, the attributes might make the XML serialization not working, as described in the previous blogpost. This is the case if the service you're using serializes objects using the DataContract serializer: this serializer will give up to serialize the entity objects to XML as the entity objects implement IXmlSerializable and this is a no-go area for the DataContract serializer. However, if your service doesn't use a DataContract serializer, or you serialize the objects manually to Xml using an xml serializer, you're fine. When you want to switch to Xml serializing again, instead of JSON in WebApi, and you have decorated the entity classes with the data-contract attributes, you can switch off the DataContract serializer, by setting a global configuration setting: var xml = GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Formatters.XmlFormatter; xml.UseXmlSerializer = true; This will make the WebApi use the XmlSerializer, and run the normal IXmlSerializable interface implementation.

  On our Citrix farm, I just found out that some sub-components are "Installed on 1st Use" (Advertised), which does play well on terminal servers. Not only that, but you also get a rather non-descriptive error message, when a document tried to use a component, which is "Installed on 1st Use" (described on Plan to deploy Office 2010 in a Remote Desktop Services environment): Microsoft Office cannot run this add-in. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning correctly. Please contact your system administrator. I have ~50 Citrix servers where I need to change the installation state of all Advertised components to Local, so I created an XML file like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Configuration Product="ProPlus"> <Display Level="none" CompletionNotice="no" SuppressModal="yes" AcceptEula="yes" /> <Logging Type="standard" Path="C:\InstallLogs" Template="MS Office 2007 Install on 1st Use(*).log" /> <Option Id="AccessWizards" State="Local" /> <Option Id="DeveloperWizards" State="Local" /> <Setting Id="Reboot" Value="NEVER" /> </Configuration> I run it with a command like this (using the appropriate paths): "[..]\setup.exe" /config ProPlus /config "[..]\Install1stUse-to-Forced.xml" According to the log file, the syntax appears to be accepted and the config file parsed: Parsing command line.   Does there exist a simple Load Balancer app for development on Windows? I am running a pair of JBoss 5.x instances in a cluster on a single machine. Normally , this configuration is load balanced by a nice hardware load balancer but I am wondering if there is a simple piece of software to enable load balancing in my Eclipse dev environment. Basically, for example, I want a load balancer running on port 11111 that round-robins between the 2 clustered JBoss instances on ssl ports 8443 and 8543 . (or http port if thats not possible) I know that Glassfish has a built-in load balancer but I can't use Glassfish. One idea I have is to try to setup a separate instance of Tomcat with the "balancer" web app. Im trying that now... not sure if it will work... and its a complicated setup and I wish there was something really easy.

• What is a simple deformer in which vertices deform linearly with control points?

  In my project I want to deform a complex mesh, using a simpler 'proxy' mesh. In effect, each vertex of the proxy/collision mesh will be a control point/bone, which should deform the vertices of the main mesh attached to it depending on weight, but where the weight is not dependant on the absolute distance from the control point but rather distance relative to the other affecting control points. The point of this is to preserve complex three dimensional features of the main mesh while using physics implementations which expect something far simpler, low resolution, single surface, etc. Therefore, the vertices must deform linearly with their respective weighted control points (i.e. no falloff fields or all the mesh features will end up collapsed) - as if each vertex was linked to a point on the plane created by the attached control points and deformed with it. I have tried implementing the weight computation algorithm in this paper (page 4) but it is not working as expected and I am wondering if it is really the best way to do what I want. What is the simplest way to 'skin'* an arbitrary mesh, to another arbitrary mesh? *By skin I mean I need an algorithm to determine the best control points for a vertex, and their weights.

  I mean real bare bones, bare machine here(no Linux kernel, pre-existing kernel, or any bootloader). I mean honestly write the bootloading software in direct microarchitecture-specific machine opcode, host the operating system, interrupts, I/O, services, and graphical software and all hardware interaction, computation, and design entirely in binary. I know this is quite the leap here, but I was thinking to practice first in x86 assembly (not binary) 16-bit style. Any ideas?

• Is there a simple, safe way to trigger a GPU lockup on a susceptible computer?

  Answers to my previous question, Ubuntu 12.04 froze, requiring powercycle. What should I look / grep for in the logs?, have led me to suspect that my computer is experiencing an intermittent GPU lockup. It has been happening about once a week, usually when I am using Chrome. Today it happened when I was creating a diagram on lucidchart I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT and dual monitors running in Xinerama mode. I am using 12.04 with the proprietary ATI driver installed. When the computer locks-up, I can still ssh in. And I would like to follow the instructions on reporting this provided at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze Is there a (safe) way to cause a GPU lockup so that I can go ahead and file a bug, rather than waiting until it happens again?

  I'm trying to wrap my head around how to organize components in an Entity Component Systems once everything in the current scene/level is loaded in memory. (I'm a hobbyist BTW) Some people seem to implement the Entity as an object that contains a list of of "Component" objects. Components contain data organized as an array of key-value pairs. Where the value is serialized "somehow". (pseudocode is loosely in C# for brevity) class Entity { Guid _id; List<Component> _components; } class Component { List<ComponentAttributeValue> _attributes; } class ComponentAttributeValue { string AttributeName; object AttributeValue; } Others describe Components as an in-memory "table". An entity acquires the component by having its key placed in a table. The attributes of the component-entity instance are like the columns in a table class Renderable_Component { List<RenderableComponentAttributeValue> _entities; } class RenderableComponentAttributeValue { Guid entityId; matrix4 transformation; // other stuff for rendering // everything is strongly typed } Others describe this actually as a table.   Cross referencing figure and table captions is useful while editing a document but can become confude when copying and pasting between large documents. I need to pass my document to a colleague who will collate my document with others and has requested that I remove or delete any cross referencing so that my "correct" cross references do not interfere or get interfered with by any other cross references that may be in my colleagues master collated document. My document will be cut and pasted into the master and no further complicated instructions after that point will be tolerated by my colleague. Is there a simple way to convert my cross references to simple text? I am using microsoft word 2013.

  I've tried a few times to look at the source code for various things from github or other sites, in javascript, C#, PHP, etc. I'm never able to understand the programs as a whole though. I can sort of piece together what a specific snippet of code does, but I quickly lose the context of what I'm looking at and how it fits in. And so far I have html5 code that has a 3 x 3 layout that switches between x and o for the game mechanics. I believe I'm still missing a check for win function but my question is about the server side of this game. I'm not sure how to go about learning what exactly I want. how do you take what I have now, and make this into a functioning online game? • How can I get started using TDD to code some simple functionality?

  I basically have the gist of TDD. I'm sold that it's useful and I've got a reasonable command of the MSTEST framework. However, to date I have not been able to graduate to using it as a primary development method. Mostly, I use it as a surrogate for writing console apps as test drivers (my traditional approach). The most useful thing about it for me is the way it absorbs the role of regression testing. I have not yet built anything yet that specifically isolates various testable behaviors, which is another big part of the picture I know.   I'm trying to bind to my asus eee hotkeys couple of jupiter functions to work as on Windows. The problem is that I have to run those as superuser. Under terminal scripts are working fine so I put in my ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml: <keybind key="XF86Launch6"> <action name="Execute"> <command>sudo /usr/lib/jupiter/scripts/cpu-control</command> </action> </keybind> Aaaaaand... It partially works. Some of files to change with this script was changed and other no. Some of the changed one are locked so sudo probably working. I have no idea how to debug this cause I don't know where to find log of this. I'm lil' bit ashamed but I don't know how exactly sudo works. I don't want to put my password every time to change cpu frequency or toggle touchpad so I don't want to use gksu or other sudo gui.

  I created a website for my wife, who knits scarves. The site simply displays the 18 different colours she has created, with a Lightbox-like large photo available when clicked. She would now like to give visitors the option to purchase online and pay with PayPal and possibly Google Checkout. We do not need a full ecommerce solution; I've looked at several and they all seem to be overkill for our requirements. We don't even need categories. "All" I want is something that will add products to a cart, take the customer details and integrate the payment provider. So far, the best solution I have found seems to be this script on Codecanyon and I wanted to find out if anyone knows of any better products before I commit to this route. Thanks for your help!
