• How do shared hosting servers keep executing code from crossing accounts?

  I am kind of curious, how does a hosting server support multiple users with php but keep each user away from the other code? The 'easy' solution i thought were file permissions. So every user can have www-data belong to their group and the server would have executing access but the users cant access the others file. But then i realize the user running the php would be www-data who has permission to read everyones data. So how does a shared host prevent this from happening? PS: I personally use nginx (with fastcgi php). But i am somewhat familiar on how apache works.

• Windows 7: How to stop/start service from commandline (like services.msc does it)?

  I have developed a program in Java that uses on a local SQL Server instance to store its data. On some installations the SQL Server instance is not running sometimes. Users can fix this problem by manually starting the SQL Server instance (via services.msc). I am thinking about automating this task: the software would check if the database server is reachable, if not try to (re)start it. The problem is that on the same user account the Services can be stopped /started via services.msc (without any UAC prompt), but not via (non-elevated) command line. The operating system seems to treat services.msc differently: c:\>sc start mssql$db1 [SC] StartService: OpenService FEHLER 5: Zugriff verweigert (Access denied) c:\>net start mssql$db1 Systemfehler 5 aufgetreten. Zugriff verweigert (Access denied) So the question is: how can I stop/start the service from a java-program/command line without having my users to use services.msc (preferrably via on-board-tools)

• SSH + SAMBA + LDAP question

  Hi, I have SSH + LDAP working (I can log to Server2 with credentials from LDAP server Server1). Now, I would like to add Samba server (Server3) and it would be nice if it authenticates the users like Server2. How can I achieve this ? As I see Samba schema and the schema used for storing Unix users are different. So if I change password in Samba schema, I would be able to log in with the old password. I need centralized storage of username/passwords. If I change it once in phpldapadmin, it means for samba and ssh. Thanks.

• Put Google Chrome, AVG on a flash drive

  I often install programs on others' computers such as LibreOffice, which, when they only have a dial-up connection, takes forever to download. So instead I keep it on a flash drive and install it from there. This works fine for LibreOffice. However, some programs, when you download them all you are downloading is a downloader - when you download ChromeSetup and open it, a installer window opens which actually downloads Chrome. Dial-up users then see that it will take 4 hours. Another example is AVG free antivirus - you download an installer, which when opened actually downloads AVG. However this doesn't work too well for dial-up users. How do I put the entire program of things like Chrome and AVG on a flash drive for fast installation on others' slow connections?

• Some printers are merged into control panel on Windows 7

  I install the same printer several times to allow easy selection for users. They just choose the desired printer to have the corresponding functionnality (instead of going to printer properties and change them back and forth): one with double-sided printing, one for draft quality, one for upper tray, etc. On Windows 7, when I install a printer several times, the control panel's printers icons are merged. I then have only one icon for two or three identical printers. I can right-clic on the icon to display the usual menu, and some items of the menu have an arrow to access each printer. This is very missleading for users and admins. I have this behaviour on some computers, when others don't exhibit this. I didn't found what is the difference between computers with and without the problem. Anyone know how to prevent this ?

• Naming the implementation version of an interface function

  When I need to write an implementation version of an interface function, I put the implementation function within a impl namespace, but with the same name as the interface function. Is this a bad practice? (the same name part, the namespace part I am confident it’s more than OK). For me, who I write the code, there is no confusion between the two, but I want to make sure this isn’t confusing for someone else. One other option would be to append impl suffix to the function name, but since it is already in a separate namespace named impl it seems redundant. Is there an idiomatic way to do this?   I have a problem of load balancing. We developed a web app for nearly 1500 users. As the number of users increased we are unable to serve the requests in a timely manner. It takes around 10 to 20 seconds to load a page. Under heavy load it can take one minute to serve the page. We need to solve this situation so that each request is served in 2 or 3 seconds. • Windows Media Player 11 fails to authenticate with proxy (ISA)

  We have some users who need to use a 3rd party site that embeds Windows Media Player streaming video into a web page. Our users go through an ISA proxy server to connect to the Internet. The browser has no problems accessing the site through the proxy. When Media Player loads, we get prompted for network credentials, but the authentication fails. If we set up Internet Explorer 8 to not use the proxy, Media Player has no problem. Media Player is configured to use the RTSP/TCP and HTTP protocols, but not the RTSP/UDP protocol. Is this necessary? Is there a registry key I can use to enable it? Is this more of a proxy server issue? The proxy guy says it's a desktop issue.

• SFTP (or similar) server automated setup for group spaces

  I need to build a dedicated machine which will be used to allow our clients to upload and download files in a secure manner. Each client has multiple users, and I would rather not hand out generic client users which are used by multiple people. Each client should have access to their files only, and no others. There is no use-case (yet) for multiple clients interacting with a single file or space. Is there an existing solution to automating the creation and maintenance of these accounts, preferably with a view to integration with LDAP? Currently it looks like if we want to use SFTP with chrooted spaces they will need to be set up manually (or an automation hand-rolled). If a solution exists for a different (but still secure) transfer method, such as FTPS, I'm all ears.

  We have a JBoss server with a single J2EE on it. I wish to find out who are the current active users using that application. Does JBoss give me any utilities that lets me view those existing sessions? (NOT the count, but who all are logged in) The question is kinda lame, but so is my JBoss knowledge :) I checked the JBoss community, but it only had a couple of relative unanswered questions there. The information i'm looking for would help me in maintenance cycles. I do not wish to reboot the system when users are still using it. • Roaming Profile to act as a redirected folder? Dropbox in roaming profile is also causing slow login/logou

  As title, what I'm wondering to know is .. if the roaming profile with Windows 2008 R2 Server (I'm talking about V2 profile - Windows7/Windows8) can work as a redirected folder (it can be done with the Desktop, Contacts, Download, AppData, My Documents). The roaming profile is copied at each login (server - client) and at each logout (client - server). This is causing slow login and logout for huge roaming profile. I can't stop the usage of roaming profile since the environment is a School with 1000 users. But I have big issues with users who populate the profile path (which is mapped on "User's File" under Windows7/8) with other stuff than the already redirected Desktop and My Document. A typical problem is given by the Dropbox folder... Any solution?

• 1 Computer Pulls Wrong DNS Every Morning

  One of my users takes his laptop home, connects to his internal network fine. He brings it in every morning and since Monday - every morning it pulls the wrong DNS every time. It pulls 1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 which is the router. The DNS are external IPs. I have several users that take their laptops home and connect to other networks - what could cause this anomaly? He's booting up when he comes in the office and a simple ipconfig /release /renew fixes the issue.

  I can't get virtual host to work on my Windows 8. I restart, stop, start Apache, but I get a popup dialog that says: The requested operation has failed! I know it's the line that produces the error, but how can I enable vhost if I don't uncomment the line in httpd.conf? # Virtual hosts Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf The only thing I did was edited C:\Apache24\conf\httpd.conf by removing the comment on Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf and edited the file located in C:\Apache24\conf\extra\httpd-vhost.conf.   I was just wondering if anyone may have come across a product that would allow for a container based encryption to be used by multiple people, in a Windows Server setup. I wanted to see if there might be something like a truecrypt that could handle being accessed by two accounts? Looking to see if there is a product that would have such properties that would allow only a hand full of users access to the content of the location, but allow for the files to be backed up a normal backup system. That way if a file had to be restored, the container could be redirected to another location for one of the users to get access to it? This would allow for access to be restricted beyond the NTFS and file share permissons

• WSS 3.0 fails to hide quick launch items for which the current user does not have access

  Hello, I'm running a Small Business Server 2008 with Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 (WSS 3.0). I thought WSS was supposed to hide menu items for which the current logged in user don't have access? Apparently, all users can see all links, regardless of whether they have access. This applies to both links to newly created sub-sites as well as document libraries/lists. Is this expected behaviour, or is there a misconfiguration somewhere that causes the links to stay visible even for users without access? Thanks!

• Encrypt ONE system directory?

  I dont want to encrypt my whole hard drive. But one app i ENJOY using stores my password in a not so secure way in the AppData folder. I would like to encrypt the folder. One note is the folder is inside my user/name directory. Maybe that will help or hinder the solution. I am fine with encrypting all of AppData if necessary. However i prefer not to encrypt C:\Users\NAME\ since it is heavily used by many apps. C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\APPNAME

• Apache mod_rewrite not working properly on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

  Hello all, I'm trying to create a PHP website with clean URLs with Apache's mod_rewrite, using a .htaccess file. mod_rewrite seems to be working, however, it claims it cannot find files on my server that do exist. Just as a basic test, this is what my .htaccess file looks like at the moment--going to [mysite]/page should redirect to the index.php file: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^page$ index.php Afaik, I have setup the .conf file appropriately as well: <Directory "/Users/myuser/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> However, when I try accessing the URL setup via mod_rewrite ( localhost/~myuser/mysite/page ), I get this: Not Found The requested URL /Users/myuser/Sites/mysite/index.php was not found on this server. However, that file does exist, and that is the proper location! The site works fine otherwise, if I go to localhost/~myuser/mysite/index.php, everything works fine--minus any sort of clean URLs, of course. Has anyone seen this before/have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

  I have a database which has 90% of read only tables. 10% of the tables has writable data. We need to scale the ASP.NET application.We need to add more users who will not be writing to the database. We are thinking of adding another server and routing the users who need read only access to that server. Is there a way to replicate just some tables to another database server. Since the 90% of data doesnt change, we don't want to setup any full database replication. Please advise.

  Hi, This is a fairly simple licensing question that has me confused. We have 3 servers: SERVER1,SERVER2,SERVER3 running on Windows Server 2003. We have 25 users. Do I need to buy 75 user licenses for the users to access all the servers or can I get by with 25? If I then upgrade 1 server to Windows Server 2008, do I need to buy a new set of user licenses. If I then upgrade the other 2, do I then need to buy 2 more sets of user licenses? Sorry for the confusion!
