  • RHEL 5/CentOS 5 - sshd becomes unresponsive

    I have a number of CentOS 5.x and RHEL 5.x systems whose SSH daemons become unresponsive, preventing remote logins. The typical error from the connecting side is: $ ssh db1 db1 : ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host Examining /var/log/messages after a forced reboot shows the following leading up to the restart: Dec 10 10:45:51 db1 sshd[14593]: fatal: Privilege separation user sshd does not exist Dec 10 10:46:02 db1 sshd[14595]: fatal: Privilege separation user sshd does not exist Dec 10 10:46:54 db1 sshd[14711]: fatal: Privilege separation user sshd does not exist Dec 10 10:47:38 db1 sshd[14730]: fatal: Privilege separation user sshd does not exist These systems use LDAP authentication and the nsswitch.conf file is configured to look at local "files" first. [root@db1 ~]# cat /etc/nsswitch.conf # # /etc/nsswitch.conf # passwd: files ldap shadow: files ldap group: files ldap hosts: files dns The Privilege-separated SSH user exists in the local password file. [root@db1 ~]# grep ssh /etc/passwd sshd:x:74:74:Privilege-separated SSH:/var/empty/sshd:/sbin/nologin Any ideas on what the root cause is? I did not see any Red Hat errata that covers this.

  • Ideas for campus Internet Login mechanism?

    Hello, I work at this university and I'm seeking an effective solution for an internet login mechanism. We have a leased-link at our campus, which is shared by both staff & students. All systems (desktops + laptops + handhelds) connect to the internal network via wifi and can then get onto the net. However, a local govt. regulation requires us to keep track of individual internet usage and hence we need a solution (pref. free / opensource) that'll enable us to implement some sort of an authentication mechanism once a user hooks onto the network. One requirement is that the software should be able to authenticate either against LDAP or some other custom user database (MySQL based) or both. Can anyone suggest any such software or mechanism? Most of our servers are Linux based... so something that runs off such a platform will be good. Thanks, m^e

  • PHP Mail() to Gmail = Spam

    Recently Gmail has started marking emails sent directly from my server (using php mail()) as spam and I'm having problems trying to find the issue. If I send an exact copy of the same email from my email client it goes to the Gmail inbox. The emails are plain text, around 7 lines long and contain a URL link in plain text. As the emails sent from my client are getting through fine I'm thinking that the content isn't the issue. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could take a look at the the following headers and give me some advice why the email from the server is being marked as spam.   • Abstraction is for lame programmers ? [closed]

    Hi, there's this senior developer in my company who's (in his own opinion) a pretty good C programmer. I happen to be from functional background (ML, to be specific) and so for me composition and abstraction are the two basic elements of programming. But this MrSmartyPants has got some kind of superiority complex and he'd always argue with me that abstraction is for lame programmers and _real_ programmers do not need it. Is it a problem with this guy or all C programmers have this opinion that abstraction is for lame programmers?

    I've had a trac server running for about a year now - chugging along just as expected. Today, I implemented basic authorization on the apache server that trac runs under. Trac now picks up the user as authenticated by Apache, and doesn't allow either logout or a login. I tried to create an apache user with the same name and password as a trac user, but the behavior remained - I can't access trac. How do I align trac with Apache authorization?

  • wget works with company proxy but apt-get and dpkg doesn't

    Hi, I am trying to install some software in a fresh install of Linux dnoseda 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux. I already set the variables http_proxy, https_proxy and ftp_proxy and wget works perfectly. But when I try with apt-get it blocks trying to conect directly to the site, without the proxy. Or the other behavior that I got is a lots of 407 authentication errors. But the wget of those packages works perfectly. It's something missing? Can you help me? thanks in advance.

    I have a Windows 2008R2 server that is reporting failed login attempts from a number of workstations on our network. Some event log details: Event ID 4625, Status: 0xc000006d, Sub Status: 0xc0000064 Security ID: NULL SID, Account Name: joedoe, Account Domain: Acme Workstation Name: WINXP1, Source Network Address: 192.168.1.23, Source Port: 1904 Logon Process: NtLmSsp, Authentication Package: NTLM, Logon Type: 3 (network) I believe this is coming from some netbios service or similar (maybe the file explorer), keeping an inventory of its network neighborhood and also trying to authenticate. Is there a way to turn this off without having to turn off file sharing all together? In other words, clients authenticating against file servers that they use is of course no problem, but I want to eliminate clients trying to authenticate to servers that they are not using and have no business with. The above example is only one of thousands of log alerts for similar failed network authentications. What can I do to clean this up / handle this? Thanks.

    i have an editor that is basic microsoft actions: "createlink" "bold" etc. i made page to handle the youtube embeding and it works fine on the website. but in the editor all i can see is the rectangle of the video with nothing in it. the editor is an iframe editable that get the content from another page - if i load that page the youtube is there but inside the editor - is not working. did anybody got that somewhen?

I read all contents from network stream and successfuly recieve response. But my socket which I'm doing polling on switches it's modes like that: write ( i write headers and request here ) read ( after headers sent i begin to recieve response ) write ( STRANGE BEHAVIOUR HERE. WHY? here i send nothing really ) read ( here it switches to read back again ) last two steps can repeat several times. So I want to ask what leads for socket's mode change?   • Why doesn't update-manager allow me to upgrade distribution?

    I have an Ubuntu 9.04 PC behind a corporate firewall and proxy server. This requires that in order to get update-manager to fetch and apply updates, I must set the proxy and authentication settings in the Synaptic network configuration. Once done, I can check for updates and things work smoothly (except I don't get popup notifications of new updates, must manually check periodically). However, distribution updates just don't show up in update-manager, such as the newly released 9.10 Karmic Koala. I had the same issue in upgrading 8.10 to 9.04 and solved it by downloading and upgrading from the 9.04 ISO. What do I need to do to upgrade to 9.10 using the standard update-manager UI?

I have used KiKS (in MATLAB for simulating Khepera robots), MobotSim (in Windows, simulates a point like robot using a BASIC editor) and Player Stage/Gazebo (with C/C++ on Ubuntu Linux).     We're running OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.04. I'm able to access and use the front end with cn=admin,dc=ourcompany,dc=com and my password. But I'm unable to change the server's configuration (like loglevel) stored in cn=config because I don't seem to have a valid user/password for the backend?   • Spidermonkey pointing to a NSPR/DIST directory, HELP!

    Hey guys, I've been trying to cross-compile Spidermonkey and I am stuck with the problem wherein prtypes.h(NSPR) is unrecognizable. I alread triedy modifying Makefile.ref/config.mk/jsconfig.mk to point to a desired NSPR/DIS directory. I must have missed some basic steps because it still won't make things work. Do you have any ideas on how to properly modify the makefiles to point my spidermonkey to the right NSPR libraries? Thanks!

A simple example being changing the map type (Assuming basic map setup): - (void)webViewDidFinishLoad:(UIWebView *)webView{ [webView stringByEvaluatingJavaScriptFromString:@"map.setMapTypeId(google.maps.MapTypeId.SATELLITE);"];} This was very possible the the 2.0 API, but I can't seem to get it right in the 3.0 API.   • Log into another XP machine's SQL Server with a different userid? (WORKGROUP, not domain)

    I have two machines at home, both XP Pro SP3. I have no domain controller, so they're both just in WORKGROUP. How can I, using Windows Authentication, log into an instance of SQL Server running on the other machine? Whenever I try it, it seems to try to login as 'Guest', even though I have entered the machine name (OTHER-DESKTOP), and login (OTHER-DESKTOP\otheruser) in the User Accounts Control Panel box. It works fine if I use sql server name and password, so I know the server is running. Any clues?
