• Unity not Working 14.04

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x64. I did a sudo apt-get upgrade yesterday and restarted my PC. Now my taskbar and panel are missing. • ScrollViewer.EnsureVisible for Windows Phone

  In my Translator By Moth app, on both the current and saved pivot pages the need arose to programmatically scroll to the bottom. In the former, case it is when a translation takes place (if the text is too long, I want to scroll to the bottom of the translation so the user can focus on that, and not their input text for translation). In the latter case it was when a new translation is saved (it is added to the bottom of the list, so scrolling is required to make it visible). On both pages a ScrollViewer is used. In my exploration of the APIs through intellisense and msdn I could not find a method that auto scrolled to the bottom. So I hacked together a solution where I added a blank textblock to the bottom of each page (within the ScrollViewer, but above the translated textblock and the saved list) and tried to make it scroll it into view from code. • Starting a Java activity in Unity3d Android

  I wrote a small Java activity extension of UnityPlayerActivity similar to what is described in the Unity docs. It has a method for displaying a song picking interface using an ACTION_GET_CONTENT intent. I start this activity using startActivityForResult() and it absolutely kills the performance of my Unity game when it is finished, it drops to about .1 FPS afterwords. I've changed removed the onActivityResult function and even tried starting the activity from inside an onKeyDown event in Java to make sure my method of starting the activity from Unity was not the problem. I use similar usecase as andre however we'll not be using Exception Handling property from taskflow, instead we use popup and invoke the same programmatically. • Formatting Dates, Times and Numbers in ASP.NET

  Formatting is the process of converting a variable from its native type into a string representation. Anytime you display a DateTime or numeric variables in an ASP.NET page, you are formatting that variable from its native type into some sort of string representation. How a DateTime or numeric variable is formatted depends on the culture settings and the format string. Because dates and numeric values are formatted differently across cultures, the .NET Framework bases its formatting on the specified culture settings. By default, the formatting routines use the culture settings defined on the web server, but you can indicate that a particular culture be used anytime you format. In addition to the culture settings, formatting is also affected by a format string, which spells out the formatting details to apply. The .NET Framework contains a bounty of format strings. There are standard format strings, which are typically a single letter that applies detailed formatting logic. For example, the "C" format specifier will format a numeric type as a currency value; the "Y" format specifier displays the month name and four-digit year of the specified DateTime value. There are also custom format strings, which display a apply a very specific formatting rule. These custom format strings can be put together to build more intricate formats. For instance, the format string "dddd, MMMM d" displays the full day of the week name followed by a comma followed by the full name of the month followed by the day of the month. For more involved formatting scenarios, where neither the standard or custom format strings cut the mustard, you can always create your own formatting extension methods. This article explores the standard format strings for dates, times and numbers and includes a number of custom formatting methods I've created and use in my own projects. • How do I roll back to the shipped version of Thunderbird?

  I was using thunderbird v15.0 on ubuntu 12.04 LTS till now, and have the lightning extension installed to manage calendar within thunderbird application. everything was working fine until i decided to update thunderbird to the latest version 16.0 from ubuntu repository. installation was successful, and the profile everything was taken care of perfectly, except that now lightning is not working - it is disabled as lightning v1.7 is NOT compatible with latest thunderbird v16 yet. As a result i am at loss with all my scheduling. now, i would like to go back to thunderbird v15 so that i can use lightning. ubuntu repository only gives TB v16 now. on mozilla site, they are still giving v15 for linux, so i downloaded the tarball and uncompressed using command line. now i have a folder called thunderbird. there are no readme/ configuration files. there are following 'executable files' inside this folder: crashreporter, mozilla-remote-client, plugin-container, thunderbird and thunderbird-bin. i tried invoking thunderbird and thunderbird-bin from command line using sudo, still nothing is opening up. i have execute permissions for this folder contents. i m quite new to linux. please let me know why i m not able to launch thunderbird. did i install it incorrectly? please let me know if i can get a .deb package for TB v15.

  This is a short note for anyone that may be interested in redistributing sqlpackage.exe. If this isn’t you then no need to keep reading. Ostensibly this is here for anyone that bingles for this information. sqlpackage.exe is a command-line that ships with SQL Server Development Tools (SSDT) in SQL Server 2012 and its main purpose (amongst other things) is to deploy .dacpac files from the command-line. Its quite conceivable that one might want to install only sqlpackage.exe rather than the full SSDT suite (for example on a production server) and I myself have recently had that need. I enquired to the SSDT product team about the possibility of doing this. I said: Back in VS DB Proj days it was possible to use VSDBCMD.exe on a machine that did not have the full VS shell install by shipping lots of pre-requisites along for the ride (details at How to: Prepare a Database for Deployment From a Command Prompt by Using VSDBCMD.EXE). • Optimize SUMMARIZE with ADDCOLUMNS in Dax #ssas #tabular #dax #powerpivot

  If you started using DAX as a query language, you might have encountered some performance issues by using SUMMARIZE. The problem is related to the calculation you put in the SUMMARIZE, by adding what are called extension columns, which compute their value within a filter context defined by the rows considered in the group that the SUMMARIZE uses to produce each row in the output. Most of the time, for simple table expressions used in the first parameter of SUMMARIZE, you can optimize performance by removing the extended columns from the SUMMARIZE and adding them by using an ADDCOLUMNS function. In practice, instead of writing SUMMARIZE( <table>, <group_by_column>, <column_name>, <expression> ) you can write: ADDCOLUMNS(     SUMMARIZE( <table>, <group by column> ),     <column_name>, CALCULATE( <expression> ) ) The performance difference might be huge (orders of magnitude) but this optimization might produce a different semantic and in these cases it should not be used. A longer discussion of this topic is included in my Best Practices Using SUMMARIZE and ADDCOLUMNS article on SQLBI, which also include several details about the DAX syntax with extended columns. For example, did you know that you can create an extended column in SUMMARIZE and ADDCOLUMNS with the same name of existing measures?   This is a short note for anyone that may be interested in redistributing sqlpackage.exe. If this isn’t you then no need to keep reading. Ostensibly this is here for anyone that bingles for this information. sqlpackage.exe is a command-line that ships with SQL Server Development Tools (SSDT) in SQL Server 2012 and its main purpose (amongst other things) is to deploy .dacpac files from the command-line. Its quite conceivable that one might want to install only sqlpackage.exe rather than the full SSDT suite (for example on a production server) and I myself have recently had that need. I enquired to the SSDT product team about the possibility of doing this. I said: Back in VS DB Proj days it was possible to use VSDBCMD.exe on a machine that did not have the full VS shell install by shipping lots of pre-requisites along for the ride (details at How to: Prepare a Database for Deployment From a Command Prompt by Using VSDBCMD.EXE). • VSTO is Free But Aspose is Speed

  I’ve taken over the completion, deployment, and maintenance of an ASP.NET Web site that generates Office documents using VSTO. VSTO’s a decent concept and works fine for small-scale scenarios like a desktop app or small intranet. However, with multiple simultaneous requests via ASP.NET, we found the Web server performance suffered badly. To spread out the server’s workload, I implemented MSMQ task queuing via a WCF Windows service.  That helped a lot. IIS didn’t drag with only one VSTO/Office instance running. But I  still found it taking too long to produce a single report. A nicely formatted VSTO Excel document was taking 45 minutes.  (The client  didn’t know any better and therefore considered 45 minutes tolerable.) On my own time, I pulled out an old copy of Aspose.Total for .NET. Within an hour, I had converted the VSTO Excel C# code to Aspose Cells code. The improvement was astonishing: Instead of the 45-minutes, the report took under a minute! I’ve pasted the client’s exact chat response after he tried the speedy Aspose version: “WWWWWOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Microsoft’s VSTO is a free product while the Aspose components cost $$$.  Certainly, it can be a tough call when budgets are tight. If you’re trying to convince the client to shell out for something more suitable for the application, get an eval version of Aspose.Total and offer a direct comparison demo. • Easy Credential Caching for Git

  A common question since launching our Git support is whether there is a way to cache your username and password so you don’t have to enter it on every push.  Well thanks to Andrew Nurse from the ASP.Net team, there is now a great solution for this! Credential Caching in Windows to the Rescue Using the Git extension point for credential caching, Andrew created an integration into the Windows Credentials store. After installing git-credential-winstore instead of getting that standard prompt for a username/password, you will get a Windows Security prompt. From here your credentials for CodePlex will be stored securely within the Windows Credential Store. Setup The setup is pretty easy. Download the application from Andrew's git-credential-winstore project. Launch the executable and select yes to have it prompt for credentials. That's it. Make sure you are running the latest version of msysgit, since the credential's API is fairly new. • Platform Builder: PBWorkspaces CESysgen.bat Not Used?

  One of the things that I like about Windows CE is that I am always learning new things, but in this case it is a bit disturbing. We working with Multi UI (MUI) this week and discovered some problems with Windows CE 5.0 and Chinese language support. These problems don’t exist in CE 6.0. The problem was that in the batch files in Public\CEBASE\oak\misc, specifically weceshellfe.bat, some of the shell components needed are only included if certain LOCALs are selected. English is not one of them, I suppose this is because someone didn’t think that we would ever use them and English – doh. No problem, just work around this in PBWorkspaces\<workspace>\WINCE500\<BPS>\cesysgen.bat. But that didn’t work. After a lot of trial and error, what I determined is that this cesysgen.bat isn’t actually used by Platform Builder any more.  Instead, in that same folder is a <workspace>.bat file that is called by Public\CEBASE\oak\misc\cesysgen.bat. That leads to some new problems though, but solvable, in that what I really wanted to do was add a fix after the batch files in CEBASE run, but <workspace>.bat runs before the other batch files in CEBASE. So what I finally came up with was to add the fix to the PASS2 handling in <workspace>.bat. Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

• Where to find other versions of Opera browser as deb packages?

  I used Opera mainly for the Unite feature now to be abandoned. It is missing in v. 12. Some say its features will re-emerge in future extensions etc. Until then, Unite is still accessible in v. 11. Where do I get the v.11 deb? P.S. In fact it seems that opera unite (at least in its older form) is dying while I am editing this question. Access to opera-unite applications from within opera-unite is poor or absent. This issue is obscure to me for now (31.08.2012) because yesterday I have installed v12 in Windows OS (with opera-unite and basic applications - file sharing and media player - already installed) and it is still working (server is working). The v12 Ubuntu version came today without unite, and after installing v11 (which has unite) I could not get applications (file sharing, etc). But they are still available: here and after downloading these files which have te .ua extension, they can be installed by opening them with Opera (v.11) But as opera-unite is no longer supported, it is possible that the server that provides the file sharing etc will soon be unaccessible. Even if that is the case the question should maybe not be closed at it has a general usefulness independently of the unite issue.
