  • Custom Extensions on Managed Chromebooks

    I am a developer looking for the best way to set up different schools with their own custom, private extensions (ie School A should be the only one with access to Extension A). Theoretically, I am aware that there are a few ways to get a custom, private extension pushed out on a domain: Host the .crx on a server and click "Specify a Custom App" in the management console. Create a Domain App by uploading a zip to the Chrome Web Store Upload the extension from my developer account to the Chrome Web Store and publish to a single "trusted tester," or make it unlisted Option (1), hosting the .crx, has not been working. I am not sure why, but the extension is simply not pushing out. I link directly to the crx file, which has the right ID and MIME type, still, no dice. If anyone has any tips or suggestions for getting this to work, I would love to hear them! Option (2), having the school create a domain app, seems a bit inefficient because it requires all schools to upload their own zip. So essentially I would have to email a zip file to the school, and have them publish it. All updates to the extension will also require a similar process, so this doesn't seem ideal. I doubt that option (3) would work. If I published to the admin as a "trusted tester", I don't think that the other people in the domain would be able to access it. If it is unlisted, I do not know how an admin could find it in the Chrome Web Store dialog. Also, I would rather avoid security through obscurity. Has anyone had success with hosting the extension and using the Specify a Custom App feature? Any other suggestions for getting a Custom Extension pushed out by the management console?     Java developer, did you ever wish that you can take your Java skills and apply them to building applications for iOS mobile devices? Well, now you can!   • In MVC, why can't a model create a view?

    I have a web application written in Perl with a controller, some "views" and some "Models". Each "Model" is corresponding to one "View". The controller (one file) creates an Model object corresponding to each view (view is a CGI argument) then retrieve the view from the module it has just created. Indeed, this should be bad thing but can you argue a bit more about it. My first idea was that since the object "Model" depends upon the "view", then the "model" is actually a view. But also the fact that ALL the cgi parameters are passed to the Model causes the "Model" to become not truelly a view but to loose all interest, since it is only related to the current implementation of the web apps. On other words, that the "Model" keep model but loose its "comprehensiveness" ("Model" is not easily understandable). I'm am quite new in project analysis, so please do not be too harsh. Why is this bad?     Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden.   • Blogger Blog Takes Ages to Load after Custom Domain Redirection

    I recently bought a custom domain for a blogger blog (technabled.com) I have for sometime now. I followed the instructions on blogger's documentation. I added A-name records and CNAME records with my DNS provider. But, now, some strange problems are cropping up. If I connect to my broadband network and then ping technabled.com, it times out. Then, if I visit the webpage, which takes almost one and half minutes to load, and then if I ping technabled.com, it shows expected result. This is not just me. I asked some of the regular readers, who reported the same issue. As a result of this, I am losing a lot of visits. What is stranger is that the subsequent visits to the blog is faster. I have checked with a few online services to test the performance. WebPageTest seems to say the same thing: http://www.webpagetest.org/result/110117_1N_7PE/ (please see the First View / Repeat View time) Also, the pagespeed score is not that bad. So I am ruling out other possibilities. I am at a loss as to what I should do to find a solution. Help is much appreciated. :)
