• Installing raid 5 on a pre-installed ubuntu server. 12.04

  I have a ubuntu server with samba already set up and installed with a 1tb hdd. I am wanting to now install 3 more 1tb drives and create a raid array using raid 5. I have found a lot of documentation about installing raid when installing and setting up ubuntu server for the first time. However, I am struggling to find anything on installing a raid 5 array on a system already installed an configured. Can this be done, or does a clean install need to be done again?

  I like to test kmymoney. When trying to install there are a lot of kde packages that are needed by this program. That's ok, I'm using Unity and there are no kde packages installed at this moment. So, when I like to remove all this packages after testing kmymoney, how can I do that? sudo apt-get install kmymoney >> /some/folder/kmymoney.txt gives me the output of apt-get, but that's not what I'm looking for. Is there a way to remove this packages properly? Thanx in advance W.

• Active directory authentication for Ubuntu Linux login and cifs mounting home directories...

  I've configured my Ubuntu 10.04 Server LTS Beta 2 residing on a windows network to authenticate logins using active directory, then mount a windows share to serve as there home directory. Here is what I did starting from the initial installation of Ubuntu. Download and install Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS Beta 2 Get updates # sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade Install an SSH server (sshd) # sudo apt-get install openssh-server Some would argue that you should "lock sshd down" by disabling root logins. I figure if your smart enough to hack an ssh session for a root password, you're probably not going to be thwarted by the addition of PermitRootLogin no in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. If your paranoid or not simply not convinced then edit the file or give the following a spin: # (grep PermitRootLogin /etc/ssh/sshd_conifg && sudo sed -ri 's/PermitRootLogin ).+/\1no/' /etc/ssh/sshd_conifg) || echo "PermitRootLogin not found. Add it manually." Install required packages # sudo apt-get install winbind samba smbfs smbclient ntp krb5-user Do some basic networking housecleaning in preparation for the specific package configurations to come. Determine your windows domain name, DNS server name, and IP address for the active directory server (for samba). For conveniance I set environment variables for the windows domain and DNS server. For me it was (my AD IP address was 192.168.20.11): # WINDOMAIN=mydomain.local && WINDNS=srv1.$WINDOMAIN If you want to figure out what your domain and DNS server is (I was contractor and didn't know the network) check out this helpful reference. The authentication and file sharing processes for the Windows and Linux boxes need to have their clocks agree. Do this with an NTP service, and on the server version of Ubuntu the NTP service comes installed and preconfigured. The network I was joining had the DNS server serving up the NTP service too. # sudo sed -ri "s/^(server[ \t]).+/\1$WINDNS/" /etc/ntp.conf Restart the NTP daemon # sudo /etc/init.d/ntp restart We need to christen the Linux box on the new network, this is done by editing the host file (replace the DNS of with the FQDN of the windows DNS): # sudo sed -ri "s/^(127\.0\.0\.1[ \t]).*/\1$(hostname).$WINDOMAIN localhost $(hostname)/" /etc/hosts Kerberos configuration. The instructions that follow here aren't to be taken literally: the values for MYDOMAIN.LOCAL and srv1.mydomain.local need to be replaced with what's appropriate for your network when you edit the files. Edit the (previously installed above) /etc/krb5.conf file. Find the [libdefaults] section and change (or add) the key value pair (and it is in UPPERCASE WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE): [libdefaults] default_realm = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL Add the following to the [realms] section of the file: MYDOMAIN.LOCAL = { kdc = srv1.mydomain.local admin_server = srv1.mydomain.local default_domain = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL } Add the following to the [domain_realm] section of the file: .mydomain.local = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL mydomain.local = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL Conmfigure samba. When it's all said done, I don't know where SAMBA fits in ... I used cifs to mount the windows shares ... regardless, my system works and this is how I did it. Replace /etc/samba/smb.conf (remember I was working from a clean distro of Ubuntu, so I wasn't worried about breaking anything): [global] security = ads realm = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL password server = 192.168.20.11 workgroup = MYDOMAIN idmap uid = 10000-20000 idmap gid = 10000-20000 winbind enum users = yes winbind enum groups = yes template homedir = /home/%D/%U template shell = /bin/bash client use spnego = yes client ntlmv2 auth = yes encrypt passwords = yes winbind use default domain = yes restrict anonymous = 2 Start and stop various services. # sudo /etc/init.d/winbind stop # sudo service smbd restart # sudo /etc/init.d/winbind start Setup the authentication. Edit the /etc/nsswitch.conf. Here are the contents of mine: passwd: compat winbind group: compat winbind shadow: compat winbind hosts: files dns networks: files protocols: db files services: db files ethers: db files rpc: db files Start and stop various services. # sudo /etc/init.d/winbind stop # sudo service smbd restart # sudo /etc/init.d/winbind start At this point I could login, home directories didn't exist, but I could login. Later I'll come back and add how I got the cifs automounting to work. Numerous resources were considered so I could figure this out. • Nexus 7 (4.2.2) stuck as read-only on Ubuntu 13.04 (PC)

  I have a Nexus 7 running the latest Android (4.2.2) that seems to be stuck as read-only. I cannot transfer any files to or from the device though I am free to look through it. Permissions are: View Content: Only Owner Change Content: Nobody Access Content: Nobody And when I try to change the permission I get this error: Operation not supported by backend I'm baffled. This is a stock install of Ubuntu on my PC and the install isn't that old. Am I missing a lib or something? I feel the need to say it works fine on Windows 7. Thanks for looking.

  I am extremely new to Ubuntu and need to work on EdX platform. I need to install the NFS Client on Ubuntu 12.04 for the same. I used the following stuti@stuti:/$ sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server However this gives me an error as follows: Reading package lists... • How do I pause and resume apt-fast package download?

  I know that in order to speed up apt-get downloads, I can use apt-fast (which uses the aria2c or axel engine - it depends on which one I install during the configuration). But even though it says it can pause and resume downloads, I don't know how to do it, and I can't find any answer online that tells me how to do it. I have no intention of pausing apt-fast update function, I just want the ability to pause the sudo apt-fast install package_name function and resume the downloading of a package in Ubuntu at will using apt-fast (with axel or aria2c) I have seen in some forums that sudo apt-fast update cannot be paused because it requires starting the entire process. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

• OracleServiceBus+SOA in same server

  Oracle Service Bus 11gR1 (11.1.1.3) supports running in same JVM as SOA. This tutorial covers on how to do create domain in of SOA+OSB combined to run in single JVM .For this tutorial we will use a flavor  WebLogic installer bundled with both OEPE and coherence components (eg oepe111150_wls1033_win32.exe). WebLogic installer bundled with coherence and OEPE components can be seen in the screen shot.Oracle Service Bus 11gR1 (11.1.1.3) has built-in caching support for Business Services using coherence. Because of this we will have to install coherence before  installing OSB.  To get SOAand OSB running in the same domain, we have to install the SOA and OSB on the above ORACLE_HOME. After installation we should see both the SOA and OSB homes has highlighted in red.We could also see the coherence components which is mandatory for OSB and optional OEPE also installed.                     Now we will execute RCU(ofm_rcu_win_11.1.1.3.0_disk1_1of1) to install the schema for SOA and OSB. New RCU contains OSB tables (WLI_QS_REPORT_DATA , WLI_QS_REPORT_ATTRIBUTE) gets loaded as part of SOAINFRA schema  After this step we will have to create soa+osb domain using config wizard. It is located under $WEBLOGIC_HOME\common\bin\config.* (.cmd or .sh as per your platform) .While creating a domain we will select options for SOA Suite  and Oracle Service Bus Extension-All Domain Topologies.We can also bundle Enterprise Manager in the same installation or in a different server. Here in this case we will use the enterprise manager in the same domain. So we selected the Enterprise Manager component also. There is another option for OSB  Oracle Service Bus Extension-Single server Domain Topology. This topology is for users who want to use OSB in single server configuration. Currently SOA doesn't support single server topology. So this topology cannot be used with SOA domain but can only be used for stand alone OSB installations.We can continue with domain configuration till we reach the below screen. Following steps are mandatory if we want to have the SOA and OSB run in same JVMwe should select Managed Server, Clusters and Machines as shown below   After this selection you should see a screen with two servers One managed server for OSB and one managed for SOA.  Since we would like to have both the servers in one managed server (one JVM) we will have to do one

• Compiler Dependencies [closed]

  I'm a newbie researcher who's passion is programming languages (Web era). I'm wondering why all the Web frameworks and Web-based general purposes languages, have a huge number of dependencies when you want to install and then use (e.g., extend, alternate, etc.) their compilers. For example, Ruby on Rails or Scala. If I want to download their source code, and try to build it again, to me at least, feels like a can of worms. I have a MAC, so I need to install MACports, then update my XCode, then get the compiler source code that has bunch of other dependencies, then its hard to set things up; just to see the installed open-source compiler works fine.

  sudo apt-get install monodevelop installs MonoDevelop 2.8.x. The official site, http://monodevelop.com/Download, states that "Packages for MonoDevelop 3.0.3.5 not yet available. The latest available version is MonoDevelop 2.6.0.1". I want to use the F# plugin for MonoDevelop which supposedly is only available for MonoDevelop 2.10.x and latter releases. How do I install MonoDevelop 2.10.x or latter on my Ubuntu? Or is it not possible at all?

• Black Screen on boot on a Lenovo IdeaPad Z575

  So I tried to install Wubi. On boot, when I select Ubuntu it starts then I get a purple screen then black screen. My monitor is like completely off. So then I have to hold down my power button and shut it off. I boot it up then held shift and typed in "nomodeset" after the second to last line, but then when it boot it went into the command prompt thing and just stopped after "checking battery" or something. This is my first time installing any linux distro. I want to install it alongside windows and dual boot it with wubi because that is easy and simple. I have put the iso on the usb using PendriveLinux and restarted the machine. At the boot I am presented with several options but those Ubuntu ones simply load my friends Ubuntu 10.10 OS (for which I have no password). edit: I fixed this by pressing F12 at the boot before it gave me that prompt (called GRUB). I clicked USB and finally install.

• How do I get a Canon imageClass MF4350d printer working?

  I have an imageClass MF4350d printer/scanner/fax. I've tried to install the drivers. The printer is recognized in the system settings, but nothing prints. The scanner is working in simple scan. I tried following all of the troubleshooting suggestions in this thread with no success I downloaded this driver. I downloaded the Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V230_uk_EN from Canon: Installation: 1st attempt: I installed the CNCUPSMF4350ZK.ppd file in the printer settings and moved the pstoufr2cpca file to /usr/lib/cups/filter. 2nd attempt: I followed forum advice of installing a fake gs-esp to tell the system that "gs-esp" is PROVIDED by the package "fake-gs-esp" I then converted the RPM sudo apt-get install alien sudo alien -k cndrvcups-common-2.20-1.x86_64.rpm sudo alien -k cndrvcups-ufr2-uk-2.20-1.x86_64.rpm I then installed the resulting .deb packages. Since I'm new to Linux, as much detail as possible in your suggestions would be very appreciated. I am still learning how to use the Terminal. Thank you very much!

• Wireless icon shows grey box

  Hello I am running kubuntu 13.10. I had to install using the server disk and did a upgrade to the desktop version to enable full disk encryption using multiple drives. For some weird reason when I move my mouse over to the wireless icon which has an red circle and a line through it, up pops a grey box with nothing in it. This stops me from chosing which ssid's I can connect to. Ubuntu has the drive for my wirless card and it is working verified using #lspci | grep Network Centrino Wireless-N 2230 I am connected to my network from the install wizard but I need to be able to choose which networks. Please help.

  i'm new to ubuntu apps and launchpad. I've created a unity lenses app using quickly but i'm stuck on how to deploy it, i have two questions. I can create a deb file using quickly package but when i install it, i still need to manually restart unity and run the project using 'quickly run'. how can i get the package manager to do that on install so users can start using the lens straight away? I'm confused as to what i need to do to make my project be installed using a ppa. i've pushed my code to launchpad using bzr, i've created a ppa, openpgp key, ssh etc. i don't know what to do next? • So you want a French Site?

  I thought I would write a quick write up of how to create a french site in SharePoint 2007. I'm not talking about a Variation but just a plain French Site from the ground up. There were some gotchas that I felt were worth blogging about. First:  go to Microsoft Telnet Article and follow the install instructions. Make sure that when you get to the download page that you select "French" as part of the drop down and you download and install the right language pack. I noticed that if you did not click the "change" button enven though I selected the 'french' language pack, it reverted back to the english language pack.   Second: You will notice a couple of things. When you go to central admin you will see the following:    Now you can pick between french site or english. You will get this if you install other language packs and they will be listed in the drop down. You will notice that you now have french headings and frech listings of sites. You see "Publishing" as a heading because I have a custom site definition that I deployed as a french site. Third: As you start navigating around and trying to create document libraries or sites you will start getting errors. Errors like the following: "Cannot make a cache safe URL for "SelectorControls.js", file not found. Please verify that the file exists under the layouts directory. " Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services. Once you resolve the issue with this "js" file, you will find that there are other js files that are missing. The only problem is that if you are not fluent in French or the language you are trying to deploy, Well, you'll have a tough time understanding error messages as they will all be in the new language you are trying to deploy. So let's just talk about what happened when you installed the language pack. In the 12 Hive:  12/Template    you will now see a 1033 folder and a 1036 folder. The 1036 folder is the folder that was created and added as part of the language pack. What the above error is saying is that now that it's looking at the 1036 folder, well, it's missing some files. The nice thing is that these files are included in the 1033 folder (which is the English Language Pack). Simply copy and paste the controls from the one folder to the other. There will be more than one conflict so you will have to move serveral controls over. Can't remember how many but simply add them as error messages come up. I had to add some navigation controls and some content selectors.   Now that's all that you need to install the Frech Language pack anc reate site collections that are entirely in a another language. Do not mistake this with Variations, where you can have multiple language sites. For those of you doing a little bit extra with this, let me share what I was doing extra and what I needed to get it working for me. I had had a custom site definition which was obviously not showing up in my selection of french sites. I was under the impression that all sites in English would show up in french and that the sites were simply routed to a new Resource file for french content. And that is the case but there is a little extra that needs to be done if you have a custom site definition deployed:  First: Under hive 12/Template/1033/XML  there is a listing of site definition files that are deployed to the English side of things. If you navigate to 12/Template/1036/XML  and open one of the site definitions you will see that they are similar and reference the existing site definitions installed on the server, except that they have some french added to descriptions and names. Simply copy the xml file of your custom template to the 1036 folder to have it show up as a selection when you select French as the dropdown entry when create a site colleciton. You can go ahead and change the description and name to suit the language it's under.    Second: As part of my site definition, I packaed up several list templates, that were saved as STP files. When you navigate to the list template listing, well, the templates are for English sites, not French so I cannot create document libraries based on the template. What now? well here comes KWIzCom to the rescue! They seem to have put out a "STP language converter" where you can take a site template or list template and convert it to any target language you are after. It's a free download, Use it and you're good to go.  One thing I will mention is that when I convereted the English documents I whent ahead and converted them to French-Canadien. And it didn't work! so I finally figured out that the French Version it was expecting in the french site was "French-France". Don't know why that is, it's just what needs to be done to get that working. When I did that, I was able to use the List templates that I created in the English site for the French Site.   Hope it helps , good luck!

• LiveCD does not work on my desktop

  I've installed Oneiric on my laptop without any issue using the LiveCD downloaded here (from the French Ubuntu community server). But on my desktop, weird things happen: During the 1st try booting with the LiveCD on my desktop, my 2 year old child just hit the keyboard, and after several error messages the desktop loaded and I've been able to test Oneiric. But I wanted to redo a boot before installing Oneiric to avoid mistakes. So during the 2nd time I tried to boot with the LiveCD, I couldn't access to the point where I can choose to test or install. Before trying a 3rd time, I've "cleaned the system" from System Parameter System. But after that I'm still not able to access to the point where I can choose to test or install. Now it stops all the time on a black screen. I do not understand why several boot attempts with same CD have several results. So I wonder if the state of my current installation 11.04 can affect re-booting with my CD 11.10 ?

  I am trying to install virtualbox and make it work but it doesn't seem I can. In the image you can seem the output. If I run VBoxManage --version I get: WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and the appropriate headers, most likely linux-headers-generic. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. 4.3.10_Ubuntur93012 But virtualbox-dkms is already installed and at the latest version. So I tried to reinstall it and i got this: Any help will be appreciated. EDIT: The output after reconfigure (@M.Tarun suggestion): EDIT 2: Also installed the sources as @Hmayag instructed, purged virtualbox and installed it again but I got the same problem.
