• How can I use a computer as a router and send all client traffic through anonymous proxies?

  Is there a way that I can setup a spare box as a router on my network, and route client traffic through a proxy in order to hide my location? Specifically, I would like internet traffic to/from my Roku Box to be routed via proxy, but there is no proxy support built in to the Roku. So I would like wire my Roku directly my computer's second NIC, and force all traffic through a proxy. What kind of software and hardware setup will I need? Also, which anonymous proxy service are best for this purpose? I'm not interesting in full anonymity or encryption. I simply want to mask my location while providing the best possible throughput.

  There are three options for customizing taskbar buttons in Windows 7: Always combine, hide labels Combine when taskbar is full Never combine Is there any way to hide labels and not combine taskbar buttons? Or even better, to exclude only certain applications from combining? My main problem is that I switch a lot between two instances of a single application, and having to hover over combined icon and then choosing the correct one. Alt-Tabbing is not a good alternative when I'm switching between more than three applications; clicking on taskbar only once is what I'm looking for.

• Augmenting functionality of subclasses without code duplication in C++

  I have to add common functionality to some classes that share the same superclass, preferably without bloating the superclass. The simplified inheritance chain looks like this: Element -> HTMLElement -> HTMLAnchorElement Element -> SVGElement -> SVGAlement The default doSomething() method on Element is no-op by default, but there are some subclasses that need an actual implementation that requires some extra overridden methods and instance members. I cannot put a full implementation of doSomething() in Element because 1) it is only relevant for some of the subclasses, 2) its implementation has a performance impact and 3) it depends on a method that could be overridden by a class in the inheritance chain between the superclass and a subclass, e.g. SVGElement in my example.   I just did a fresh install of 11.10 32 bit and I can't get my wireless to work. I installed the drivers the Broadcom STA wireless drivers through additional drivers and rebooted, but it still doesn't see any wireless networks Did something change in 11.10 that makes the wireless card not work anymore? I was using 10.10 before, and it worked fine. • GCC: assembly listing for IA64 without an Itanium machine

  I need to try the following thing: I would like to compile some simple C code samples and see the assembly listing generated by GCC for IA64 architecture, i.e. I just want to run GCC with the -S switch and see the resultant .s file. I don't have an Itanium machine, so in order to do it myself I'll probably need a cross-compiling version of GCC built for x86 RedHat. I'm not interested in full cross-compilation, meaning that I don't need to generate the binaries at all. The easiest way, of course, would be to find an Itanium machine with with GCC and just try it there. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have access to any. Another option is to build a cross-compiling version GCC on my RedHat, but apparently that's quite an endeavor for someone who hasn't done it before (I assume that the fact that I only need .s output doesn't make it simpler). What other options are there, if any? Maybe there's some sort of a web front to an Itanium GCC compiler on the Net (something like Comeau Online or ideone.com, but with .s output)? Anything else? I would appreciate any help.

Can I avoid storing it by having a function that computes the element i, e.g. get_table_element(seed, i). I'm aware that cryptography already solved this problem using block cyphers, however, I found it too complex to go deep and implement a block cypher. Does anyone knows a simple implementation of a block cypher to this problem?

  I need to run Windows to be able to use a feature for some remote work. However, I would rather not have a full-blown 20GB (or much more) Windows 8 install for Parallels. Is there a go-to site to have a barebones Windows virtual environment on a mac? Something like Windows XP with nLite done for a mac install? (Using Parallels or something else.) I cannot run nLite on a Mac to begin with. Are there prepared ISO files or something? Thanks.

• Solaris at LISA 2011

  As is our custom, the Solaris team will be out in force at the USENIX LISA conference; this year it's in Boston so it's sort of a home game for me for a change.  The big event we'll have is Tuesday, December 6, the Oracle Solaris 11 Summit Day.  We'll be covering deployment, ZFS, Networking, Virtualization, Security, Clustering, and how Oracle apps run best on Solaris 11.  We've done this the past couple of years and it's always a very full day.On Wednesday, December 7, we've got a couple of BOF sessions scheduled back-to-back.  At 7:30 we'll have the ever-popular engineering panel, with all of us who are speaking at Tuesday's summit day there for a free-flowing discussion of all things Solaris.  Following that, Bart & I are hosting a second BOF at 9:30 to talk more about deployment for clouds and traditional data centers.Also, on Wednesday and Thursday we'll have a booth at the exhibition where there'll be demos and just a general chance to talk with various Solaris staff from engineering and product management.The conference program looks great and I look forward to seeing you there!

I need a server-client tool to do it as below steps after an update signal from my PC: Those host machine should kill any running processes with name xyz.exe. Download my new xyz.exe. Then execute new xyz.exe. I know about some tools like PsExec, but I need a tools with better user-interface and more powerful. Is there any tool to do it ? I have a few hints to think that it is not: The "Desktop Effects" will not load Apps such as stardock, when attempting to use OpenGL rendering, will display black boxes instead of transparency In the games Pioneers, the number-tile icons are suspiciously just black circles Windows games running with Wine will only support software rendering, not hardware rendering When I boot into a Knoppix LiveCD, the desktop effects do work, splendidly, meaning compiz detects my computer as capable. My problem with troubleshooting is that Canonical has basically eliminated the conf-file-based mechanism of X11 as far as I can tell, thus making it even harder to ensure graphics modules are loading properly. How do I debug and test OpenGL on m Ubuntu 10.04 installation?

• What is the basic loadout for an open source web developer?

  Thus far, I have mainly been an embedded developer, but I am interested in having the flexibility to do mobile and web development as well. I think my tools should include the following, but probably a lot more. LAMP stack. Java IDEs like Eclipse and IntelliJ. JS frameworks like Dojo, Node.JS, AngularJS, (is it better to mix or commit to one?). Cloud solutions like EC2 and Azure (again, ok to mix or better to commit to one?). Google APIs. Continuous integration server. Source control tools with Git for new work, SVN, CVS, +others for imports. FTP server. Unit test runners. Bug trackers. OOAD modeling tools or plug-ins? Graphic design tools? Hosting services. XML / JSON / other markup? Content management, SEO? I am also interested to know if there are tools where it might be better to mix, match, or support all available (maybe for source control) and others where the full focus should be on one (maybe Java vs. C# or Windows vs. Linux vs. MacOS). Perhaps some of these questions need context of whether the projects will be greenfield (just pick favorite) or maintenance (no choice, each project continues legacy, sometimes with a poor tools).

• Fresh install on SSD with Ubuntu and Windows Vista, using whole disk encryption for Ubuntu

  I would like to do a fresh install on a OCZ Vertex Plus R2 SSD 60GB drive I purchased on the cheap. Since the AES-encryption looks like it may not work optimally for this drive, I would like to set up a dual-boot to Windows Vista (the only Windows copy I have for clean install purposes) and Ubuntu 12.04 with the best encryption scheme possible. My plan is to have Windows around just in case I need to use a program that won't work with Wine and Ubuntu as my daily OS with all of my information secured in case the laptop is ever stolen or sold. Although this setup will not provide a lot of space, I think I can squeeze both OSes and have enough for second-computer office tasks. So, my questions are: Which OS should I install first, Ubuntu or Vista? Any special considerations when partitioning the drive? How should I install Ubuntu to ensure full disk encryption for the Linux partition(s) and or my daily computing? Is there a significant performance upgrade with doing a solo install of Ubuntu instead of a dual boot setup? Will TRIM, for example, work correctly? Are there any significant security concerns with going the route of a dual-boot, other than the fact that any activity on Windows may be fully recoverable if the drive is stolen or sold? • Troubleshoot odd large transaction log backups...

  I have a SQL Server 2005 SP2 system with a single database that is 42gigs in size. It is a modestly active database that sees on average 25 transactions per second. The database is configured in Full recovery model and we perform transaction log backups every hour. However it seems to be pretty random at some point during the day the log backup will go from it's average size of 15megs all the way up to 40gigs. There are only 4 jobs that are scheduled to run on the SQL server and they are all typical backup jobs which occur on a daily/weekly basis. I'm not entirely sure of what client activity takes place as the application servers are maintained by a different department. Is there any good way to track down the cause of these log file growths and pinpoint them to a particular application, or client? Thanks in advance.

• Folder permissions, red x on user object

  This question was asked before but was no answer. On shared folders on the file server, for the domain user name object under the security tab, the icon has a red x. There are no symptoms, the users have full access, there is just a red x on the icon for their name. Why is this? For clarification, logged into the windows 2008 r2 file server, browse to a users shared folder, right click on the folder, hit properties, click the security tab. The object representing the users domain name has a little red x on the lower right hand corner of the icon that looks like a single man. There are no symptoms beyond me wondering why the red x is there.

• Failure to copy files with ownership/ACL information on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine

  I'm attempting to copy a directory tree, maintaining its ownership information using the command: XCOPY S:\ProjectsDefault\Tempalte\admin S:\Projects\00\111\admin /S /E /I /O the command gives an Access denied error message, and while it does create the directory tree, the ownership and ACL information is not copied. This is being done on a Windows 2008 R2 Server which has mounted a share from a Windows 2003 R2 domain controller. The user has been been granted full access to the share and is a member of the Domain Admins security group. Oddly enough, the command does work if performed on a different (Windows 2003 R2 Server). (It also works if done using the Domain Administrator account on the 2008 server.)

• Per-vertex animation with VBOs: Stream each frame or use index offset per frame?

  Scenario Meshes are animated using either skeletons (skinned animation) or some form of morph targets (i.e. per-vertex key frames). However, in either case, the animations are known in full at load-time, that is, there is no physics, IK solving, or any other form of in-game pose solving. The number of character actions (animations) will be limited but rich (hand-animated). There may be multiple characters using a each mesh and its animations simultaneously in-game (they will be at different poses/keyframes at the same time). Assume color and texture coordinate buffers are static. Goal To leverage the richness of well vetted animation tools such as Blender to do the heavy lifting for a small but rich set of animations. I am aware of additive pose blending like that from Naughty Dog and similar techniques but I would prefer to expend a little RAM/VRAM to avoid implementing a thesis-ready pose solver. I would also like to avoid implementing a key-frame + interpolation curve solver (reinventing Blender vertex groups and IPOs). Current Considerations Much like a non-shader-powered pose solver, create a VBO for each character and copy vertex and normal data to each VBO on each frame (VBO in STREAMING). Create one VBO for each animation where each frame (interleaved vertex and normal data) is concatenated onto the VBO. Then each character simply has a buffer pointer offset based on its current animation frame (e.g. pointer offset = (numVertices+numNormals)*frameNumber). (VBO in STATIC) Known Trade-Offs In 1 above: Each VBO would be small but there would be many VBOs and therefore lots of buffer binding and vertex copying each frame. Both client and pipeline intensive. In 2 above: There would be few VBOs therefore insignificant buffer binding and no vertex data getting jammed down the pipe each frame, but each VBO would be quite large. Are there any pitfalls to number 2 (aside from finite memory)? Are there other methods that I am missing?
