  • Versioning Java APIs in a non-web context

    I have modular java application which consists of 40 modules. Some of these modules needs to expose external APIs which other modules or any external integration should be using. The system runs as a desktop application and each module is bundled as a separate jar file. My plan is to bundle the external api as a separate jar. But now the question is: how can I maintain multiple versions of the same API to keep backward compatibility in cases where it can co-exist? Are there any de facto standards on handling APIs versioning out of a web context ?

    I have a hyper-v cluster operating on win2k8 R2 in a 2003 forest. These servers are at our NOC with a DC that connects to our PDC at HQ via a persistent VPN. The cluster boxes are reporting a error event ID 1006 shown below. The DC is also reporting an error 5805 also shown below. I have found numorus posts regarding 1006 errors, but none for error ID 52's. It's weird, I can ping and I can browse network shares on the DC from each. I thought maybe a DNS or net work issue, but nslook up works too.   • BAD DC transfering FSMO Roles to ADC

    I have a DC (FQDN:server.icmcpk.local) and an ADC (FQDN:file-server.icmcpk.local). Recently my DC is facing a bad sector problem so I changed the Operation Masters to file-server for all five roles. but when ever i turn off the OLD DC the file-server also stops wroking with AD and GPMC further i m also unable to join any other computer to this domain. For Test purpose i also added a new ADC (FQDN:wds-server.icmcpk.local) but no succes with the old DC off i had to turn the old DC on and then joined it. I m attaching the Dcdiags for all three servers.   • Lync server 2010 Active Directory Preparation with a Windows Server 2003 DC

    I'm trying to install Lync server 2010 but i'm stuck for a while now with the "Active Directory Preparation" part of the Lync server 2010 installation. The "Prepare Schema" fails with the following error: "Step 1: Prepare Schema Run once per deployment. Extends the schema for Lync Server. Not Available: Failure occurred while attempting to check the schema state. Please ensure Active Directory is reachable." screenshot: https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=CB15F1A932B364BE&id=CB15F1A932B364BE%211742 The situation: 1 server with Windows Server 2003 (x86), which is the only Domain Controller (DC) 1 server with Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) where Lync should be installed. First I have found that the DFL/FFL were not correct: On the DC (server2003) I have changed the Domain Functional Level to Windows Server 2003 and also the Forest Functional Level to Windows Server 2003. If I check these settings on the Server2008 with Active Directory Domains and Trusts, I see indeed that the DFL and FFL are being set to Windows Server 2003. (Windows Server 2003 is the minimum required for Lync server 2010) I tried the Lync AD Preparation again but still got the same message: https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=CB15F1A932B364BE&id=CB15F1A932B364BE%211742 I'm logged in on the Server2008 and Server2003 with the domain administrator account. If I check "Active Directory Users and Computers" and go to the directory Users and watch the properties from the Administrator User then it is also a Member of: Domain Admins Domain Users Enterprise Admins Schema Admins Group Policy Creator Owners The firewall on the server2008 is turned off, still nog working So now my question is: what should I do to make the Lync setup (Active Directory Preparation) work? Update 1: Now I've extended AD successfully on the 2003 DC, using this link: http://blogs.pointbridge.com/Blogs/sloan_jason/Pages/Post.aspx?_ID=2 but when I check the Active Directory Preparation again on the Lync install, it still gives me the same error as in the screenshot I've provided. Update 2: I found out that there is a log on "C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp\ with this: Get-CSDomainState Get Domain State Error: An error occurred: "Microsoft.Rtc.Management.ADConnect.NoSuitableServerFoundException" "No suitable domain controller was found in domain "OurDomain.LOCAL".   • Can someone explain RAID-0 in plain English?

    I've heard about and read about RAID throughout the years and understand it theoretically as a way to help e.g. server PCs reduce the chance of data loss, but now I am buying a new PC which I want to be as fast as possible and have learned that having two drives can considerably increase the perceived performance of your machine. In the question Recommendations for hard drive performance boost, the author says he is going to RAID-0 two 7200 RPM drives together. What does this mean in practical terms for me with Windows 7 installed, e.g. can I buy two drives, go into the device manager and "raid-0 them together"? I am not a network administrator or a hardware guy, I'm just a developer who is going to have a computer store build me a super fast machine next week. I can read the wikipedia page on RAID but it is just way too many trees and not enough forest to help me build a faster PC: RAID-0: "Striped set without parity" or "Striping". Provides improved performance and additional storage but no redundancy or fault tolerance. Because there is no redundancy, this level is not actually a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, i.e. not true RAID. However, because of the similarities to RAID (especially the need for a controller to distribute data across multiple disks), simple strip sets are normally referred to as RAID 0. Any disk failure destroys the array, which has greater consequences with more disks in the array (at a minimum, catastrophic data loss is twice as severe compared to single drives without RAID). A single disk failure destroys the entire array because when data is written to a RAID 0 drive, the data is broken into fragments. The number of fragments is dictated by the number of disks in the array. The fragments are written to their respective disks simultaneously on the same sector. This allows smaller sections of the entire chunk of data to be read off the drive in parallel, increasing bandwidth. RAID 0 does not implement error checking so any error is unrecoverable. More disks in the array means higher bandwidth, but greater risk of data loss. So in plain English, how can "RAID-0" help me build a faster Windows-7 PC that I am going to order next week?

    Hi all, I have been trying to upgrade our TFS 2005 to TFS 2010 but with no luck so far. I went through the TFS Installation guide and many upgrade guides but with no luck in overcoming the issue I am facing which seems to be unique and different to other described issues. In our company, we have a domain forest with several domains. Lets say domain A, B, and C. TFS is in domain A and has users from all these three domains. All domains have trust reltionships between them. However, domain C was deleted several months ago. With a bit of googling, I figured out that TFSConfig Identities command can be used to remap users from one domain to the other. I went ahead and created local users that matches the users we have from domain C and ran the TFSConfig Identities /Change command and it executed successfully. However, I still get the same error. I am stuck and can't figure out how to move forward :( I need your expertise, has anyone faced this issue before? Do I need to change these identities on TFS 2005 before I commence the upgrade? I forgot to mention, I am following the upgrade with a move approach. I created a virtual machine for testing the upgrade.   • Windows 2003 GPO Software Restrictions

    We're running a Terminal Server farm in a Windows 2003 Domain, and I found a problem with the Software Restrictions GPO settings that are being applied to our TS servers. Here are the details of our configuration and the problem: All of our servers (Domain Controllers and Terminal Servers) are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and both the domain and forest are at Windows 2003 level. Our TS servers are in an OU where we have specific GPO's linked and have inheritance blocked, so only the TS specific GPO's are applied to these TS servers. Our users are all remote and do not have workstations joined to our domain, so we don't use loopback policy processing. We take a "whitelist" approach to allowing users to run applications, so only applications that we approve and add as path or hash rules are able to run. We have the Security Level in Software Restrictions set to Disallowed and Enforcement is set to "All software files except libraries". What I've found is that if I give a user a shortcut to an application, they're able to launch the application even if it's not in the Additional Rules list of "whitelisted" applications. If I give a user a copy of the main executable for the application and they attempt to launch it, they get the expected "this program has been restricted..." message. It appears that the Software Restrictions are indeed working, except for when the user launches an application using a shortcut as opposed to launching the application from the main executable itself, which seems to contradict the purpose of using Software Restrictions. My questions are: Has anyone else seen this behavior? Can anyone else reproduce this behavior? Am I missing something in my understanding of Software Restrictions? Is it likely that I have something misconfigured in Software Restrictions? EDIT To clarify the problem a little bit: No higher level GPO's are being enforced. Running gpresults shows that in fact, only the TS level GPO's are being applied and I can indeed see my Software Restictions being applied. No path wildcards are in use. I'm testing with an application that is at "C:\Program Files\Application\executable.exe" and the application executable is not in any path or hash rule. If the user launches the main application executable directly from the application's folder, the Software Restrictions are enforced. If I give the user a shortcut that points to the application executable at "C:\Program Files\Application\executable.exe" then they are able to launch the program. EDIT Also, LNK files are listed in the Designated File Types, so they should be treated as executable, which should mean that they are bound by the same Software Restrictions settings and rules.

  • Can't get virtual desktops to show up on RDWeb for Server 2012 R2

    I built a test lab using the Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview. The initial test lab has the following configuration (I have replaced our name with "OurCompanyName" because I would like it if Google searches for our name did not cause people to come to this site, please do the same in any responses) Physical hardware running Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview full GUI, acting as Hyper-V host (joined to the test domain as testVwHost.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) with the following VM's running on it VM running 2012 R2 Core acting as domain controller for the forest testVw.OurCompanyName.com (testDC.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) VM running 2012 R2 Core with nothing running on it joined to the test domain as testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com A clean install of Windows 7, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it A clean install of Windows 8, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it I then ran "Add Roles and Features" from testVwHost and chose the "Remote Desktop Services Installation", "Standard Deployment", "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment". I choose testIIS for the roles "RD Connection Broker" and "RD Web Access" and testVwHost as "RD Virtualization Host" The Install of the roles went fine, I then went to Remote Desktop Services in server manager and wet to setup Deployment Properties. I set the certificate for all 3 roles to our certificate signed by a CA for *.OurCompanyName.com. I then created a new Virtual Desktop Collection for Windows 7 and Windows 8 and both where created without issue. On the Windows 7 pool I added RemoteApp to launch WordPad, For windows 8 I did not add any RemoteApp programs. Everything now appears to be fine from a setup perspective however if I go to https://testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com/RDWeb and log in as the use Administrator (or any orher user) I don't see the virtual desktops I created nor the RemoteApp publishing of WordPad. I tried adding a licensing server, using testDC as the server but that made no difference. What step did I miss in setting this up that is causing this not to show up on RDWeb? If any additional information is needed pleas let me know. I have tried every possible thing I can think of and I am just groping around in the dark now.   • Unable to resolve class in build.gradle using Android Studio 0.60/Gradle 0.11

    Established app working fine using Android Studio 0.5.9/ Gradle 0.9 but upgrading to Android Studio 0.6.0/ Gradle 0.11 causes the error below. Somehow Studio seems to have lost the ability to resolve the android tools import at the top of the build.gradle file.   • AjaxControlToolkit.resources.dll files deleted

    I'm using the ASP.NET Ajax toolkit. In addition to the AjaxControlToolkit.dll in my bin directory, I have language directories named es, de, fr, etc... The single file, the AjaxControlToolkit.resources.dll disappears from these directories every once in a while - I can't figure out why. I manually copy them back, but I've purposely done rebuild and clean solutions and they are still there. Somewhere during my normal course of work, when I'm not looking, they're gone. Any clues?

    I understand how XMLSerializer could work by using reflection to figure out what public read/write fields or properties it should be using to serialize or de-serialize XML. Yet XMLSerializer requires that the fields be public and read/write. However, DataContractSerializer is able to read or write to or from completely private fields in a class. So I'm wondering how this is even possible with out explicitly giving DataContractSerializer additional access rights to my class(es).
