  We released the latest Application Management Pack and Application Change Management Packs for Oracle E-Business Suite 4.0 for Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g earlier this year for Linux platforms.  This pair of packs is released as part of the Application Management Suite for Oracle E-Business Suite.  These two packs are also referred to as the Oracle E-Business Suite Plug-in 4.0 for OEM 11g. • Can we grant sudo to an already opened application?

  So, can we grant sudo to an already opened application ? I wish to first open an application as normal user and incase if i need root permissions on it i wish to grant su without restarting the application.. I tried opening an application and then type "sudo appname" in terminal, but that opens a new app window retaining normal user permissions on old app window. Say, i want to check and edit /etc/apt/sources.list . I open a filemanager and go to the path and click on sources.list which opens a text editor with that file in view. If i feel i need to edit that, then i want to grant sudo to that instance of text editor rather than opening a new root text editor and browsing the entire path.

• Assuming "clean code/architecture" is there a difference in "effort" between PHP or Java/J2EE web application development?

  A client asked us to estimate effort when selecting PHP as the implementation language for his next web-based application. We spent about a week exploring PHP, prototyping, testing etc., We are quite new to this language - may have hacked around it in the past but, let's go with PHP-noobs but application development experts (for the lack of a better, less flattering word :) It seems, that if we write, clean maintainable code, follow separation of concerns, enterprise architecture patters (DAOs etc.) the 'effort' in creating an object-oriented PHP based web-application seems to be the same for a Java based one. Here's our equation for estimating the effort (development/delivery time): ConstructionEffort = f(analysis, design, coding, testing, review, deployment) We were specifically comparing effort estimates in creating an enterprise application with the following: PHP + CakePHP/CodeIgniter (should we have considered others?) Java + Spring + Restlet It's an end-to-end application: Client: Javascript/jQuery + HTML/CSS Middle tier/Business Logic - (Still evaluating PHP/Java) Database: MySQL The effort estimates of the 1st and 3rd tier are constant and relatively independent of the middle tier's technology. At a high level with an initial breakdown into user stories of the requested features as well as a high-level SWAG on the sheer number of classes/SLOC that would be required for PHP doesn't seem to differ by much from what is required of the same in Java. Is this correct? We are basing our initial estimates on the initial prototyping/coding we've done with PHP - we are currently disregarding fluency with the language as a factor, since that'll be an initial hurdle and not a long term impediment IMHO (we also have sufficient time to become quite fluent with PHP). I'm interested in knowing the programmers' perspective with respect to effort when creating similar applications with either of the languages to justify choosing one over the other. Are we missing something here? It seems we are going against popular belief of PHP being quicker to market (or we being very fluent with Java have our vision clouded). It doesn't seem to have any coding/programming effort saving from what we/ve played around with.

• How to switch and list windows (possibly of the same application) in Unity?

  Is there a way to switch easily between specific windows belonging to the same given application? For example, open Firefox, maximise the window; then, open its History window (History menu - Show all history), maximise it too. Is there an easy way to switch between these two maximised Firefox windows, without necessarily minimising the current window (or other windows in front of the required window)? Similarly, if I open another application alongside, how can I quickly go to the Firefox window of my choice? I have tried Alt+Tab, but when coming back from another application, which of the Firefox windows I end up with seems indeterministic. Under Gnome, I would find the window I'm looking for in the bottom bar. Under OSX, I would right-click on the application's icon and choose the relevant window from the list. Under Windows 7, I would click on the application icon and choose from the smaller windows. Is there something similar that's not activated or not visible by default in Unity? Hovering my mouse until I've found somewhere worth hovering over hasn't been very successful so far. I would prefer a click-based solution, but solutions involving key short-cuts instead are welcome.

  My question is about the architecture of my application. I have a Rails application where companies can administrate all things related to their clients. Companies would buy a subscription and their users can access the application online. Hopefully I will get multiple companies subscribing to my application/service. What should I do with my code and database? Seperate app code base and database per company One app code base but seperate database per company One app code base and one database The decision involves security (e.g. a user from company X should not see any data from company Y) performance (let's suppose it becomes successful, it should have a good performance) and scalability (again, if successful, it should have a good performance but also easy for me to handle all the companies, code changes, etc). For the sake of maintainability, I tend to opt for the one code base, but for the database I really don't know. What do you think is the best option?

  You can look at Exchange 2003 accounts via the 2010 Management console but is modifying supported? No warnings that it is not, and all is held in Active Directory. Adding an additional email address works... But results in Error 4, Keywords "classic" Task Get-MailboxStatistics writing error when processing record of index 0. Error: Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Tasks.MdbAdminTaskException: Mailbox 'domain/OU/account name' doesn't exist in an Exchange 2007 or later mailbox database. Management Console has the updated change, as does ADUC in 2003.

• How to maintain a demo version of an application?

  I need to be able to demo our production application to prospective clients. The way I have it setup today is simple. The demo application is an exact duplicate of the production system, except that the data in the database is obfuscated to protect our current clients' data. This works great because it doesn't require any application changes. Boss dropped a potential BOMBSHELL today and said that the demo system needs to contain a special link and that ONLY shows up on demo. He went on to explain that in the future there may be much bigger differences between the demo and production apps (e.g. an entire area of functionality). What do I do now? Some things I have thought about doing: Maintain a different branch in subversion specific to the demo system Create an installation package that has the changes for demo, then revert and build a production installation package Modularize the application (no idea how) Say: "Screw you! I will not do it!" (LOL) Use some sort of conditional logic in the app to determine if it is a demo or a production app. E.g. (if the URL contains 'demo' then show else hide). If you haven't guessed by now, this is a web application Anyways, I have no experience in this scenario as to which one is better or if none of these are any good. Anyone have an answer, strategy, something!?

• How can I build this payment receipt/booking application?

  I'm planning to build a payment receipt/booking application for a media company with several branches in different locations. The application should be able to move data across the network/internet to a central database where the administrator/accountant in a different location will be able to see the result of the entire job for the day from each branch. Application will run on windows environment. Will be able to send result of the booking to a Point Of Sales printer for print output. Now, I'm confused about choosing the right programming language to accomplish this task. I'm between beginner/intermediate level in PHP, I know HTML/CSS and JavaScript. I have tried to do this in PHP but, I'm face with several challenges and I fear for the POS part since PHP application run on the web browser. I don't know if python will be best suited for this and how long will it take someone with my experience level to pick up python. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

• Clicking on application launcher starts another window. What should I do?

  If I remember correctly, clicking on the application in launcher started the application if it was not already open and focused on the application if it was already open. Previously, I had to middle click to start another instance. But, recently, whenever I click in the launcher, a new application window is started, irrespective of whether one is already open or not. What should I do? A bug? Or a new feature? I am using 12.04 LTS and 12.10 in two machines. Both fully updated. Both are showing the same behaviour.

  Hi, First of all, quickly what exactly I want to achieve: translate particular exception into the HTTP 404 so the ASP.NET can handle it further. When it is on then it never redirects to the page specified in customErrors: <error statusCode="404" redirect="404.html"/>. I also tried to raise new HttpExcepton(404, "Not Found") from the handler but then the response code is 200 which I don't understand why. So the questions are: What is the proper way of translating AnException into HTTP 404 response? How does customErrors section work when handling exceptions in Application_Error?   I am writing a small console application in C# that references a custom assembly that implements custom .net Profile provider. I have added the following sections to my app.config file which references the custom class and assembly. <system.web> <profile defaultProvider="MyCompanyProfileProvider" inherits="MyCompany.Web.User.GenericProfile" automaticSaveEnabled="false"> <providers> <clear/> <add name="MyCompanyProfileProvider" connectionStringName="defaultDatabase" applicationName="/myApplication" type="MyCompany.Web.ProfileProvider, MyCompany.Web"/> </providers> <properties> <add name="JobRoleId" type="System.Int32"/> <add name="LastCompetencyId" type="System.Int32" defaultValue="0"/> <add name="MixSettings" type="System.Xml.XmlDocument"/> </properties> </profile></system.web> However when I run the app in debug mode I get the following error as if it is looking in the System.Web assembly rather than one specified in the app.config file. Could not load type 'MyCompany.Web.User.GenericProfile' from assembly 'System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'. I have a local web app that also uses the assembly and custom Profile provider and that work without any problems. I have checked the referenced assembly is being copied to the output directory. Any ideas??
