Kaiden and the Arachnoid Cyst

Some of you may remember when my son Kaiden was born I posted pictures of him and his sister. Kaiden is now 15 months old and is progressing perfectly in every area except that and we had been worried that he was not walking yet. We were only really concerned as his sister was walking at 8 months. Figure: Kai as his usual self Jadie and I were concerned over that and that he had a rather large head (noggin) so we talked to various GP’s and our health visitor who immediately dismissed our concerns every time. That was until about two months ago when we happened to get a GP whose daughter had Hyper Mobility and she recognised the symptoms immediately. We were referred to the Southbank clinic who were lovely and the paediatrician confirmed that he had Hyper Mobility after testing all of his faculties. This just means that his joints are overly mobile and would need a little physiotherapy to help him out. At the end the paediatrician remarked offhand that he has a rather large head and wanted to measure it. Sure enough he was a good margin above the highest percentile mark for his height and weight. The paediatrician showed the measurements to a paediatric consultant who, as a precautionary measure, referred us for an MRI at Yorkhill Children's hospital. Now, Yorkhill has always been fantastic to us, and this was no exception. You know we have NEVER had a correct diagnosis for the kids (with the exception of the above) from a GP and indeed twice have been proscribed incorrect medication that made the kids sicker! We now always go strait to Yorkhill to save them having to fix GP mistakes as well. Monday 24th May, 7pm The scan went fantastically, with Kaiden sleeping in the MRI machine for all but 5 minutes at the end where he waited patiently for it to finish. We were not expecting anything to be wrong as this was just a precautionary scan to make sure that nothing in his head was affecting his gross motor skills. After the scan we were told to expect a call towards the end of the week… Tuesday 25th May, 12pm The very next day we got a call from Southbank who said that they has found an Arachnoid Cyst and could we come in the next day to see a Consultant and that Kai would need an operation. Wednesday 26th May, 12:30pm We went into the Southbank clinic and spoke to the paediatric consultant who assured us that it was operable but that it was taking up considerable space in Kai’s head. Cerebrospinal fluid is building up as a cyst is blocking the channels it uses to drain. Thankfully they told us that prospects were good and that Kai would expect to make a full recovery before showing us the MRI pictures. Figure: Normal brain MRI cross section. This normal scan shows the spaces in the middle of the brain that contain and produce the Cerebrospinal fluid. Figure: Normal Cerebrospinal Flow This fluid is needed by the brain but is drained in the middle down the spinal column. Figure: Kai’s cyst blocking the four channels. I do not think that I need to explain the difference between the healthy picture and Kai’s picture. However you can see in this first picture the faint outline of the cyst in the middle that is blocking the four channels from draining. After seeing the scans a Neurosurgeon has decided that he is not acute, but needs an operation to unblock the flow. Figure: OMFG! You can see in the second picture the effect of the build up of fluid. If I was not horrified by the first picture I was seriously horrified by this one. What next? Kai is not presenting the symptoms of vomiting or listlessness that would show an immediate problem and as such we will get an appointment to see the Paediatric Neurosurgeon at the Southern General hospital in about 4 weeks. This timescale is based on the Neurosurgeon seeing the scans. After that Kai will need an operation to release the pressure and either remove the cyst completely or put in a permanent shunt (tube from brain to stomach) to bypass the blockage. We have updated his notes for the referral with additional recent information on top of the scan that the consultant things will help improve the timescales, but that is just a guess. All we can do now is wait and see, and be watchful for tell tail signs of listlessness, eye problems and vomiting that would signify a worsening of his condition. Technorati Tags: Personal

tcptrack shows SYN_SENT connections, does that mean the SYN package reached the server?

our server suffered a serious connection timeout problem, so we track tcp connection with tcptrack we found out that, if the client started to connect to the server, tcptrack shows the connection, but in SYN_SENT status, and netstat -nat shows nothing. (tcptrack & netstat all runs on the server) does this mean the syn request reached the server? and no syn/ack was sent back? why the tcptrack could report this connection but netstat could not? what could be the problem that a general apache could not establish a connection with the client? i did a bench test using ab in the same intranet, to the specified NIC, it handled 10000 concurrent connection and 400000 requests ok ps: this doesn't happen every time, but did happened a lot pps: is there any good tools to trace where the tcp connection was lost?

Pure Server-Side Filtering with RadGridView and WCF RIA Services

Those of you who are familiar with WCF RIA Services know that the DomainDataSource control provides a FilterDescriptors collection that enables you to filter data returned by the query on the server. We have been using this DomainDataSource feature in our RIA Services with DomainDataSource online example for almost an year now. In the example, we are listening for RadGridViews Filtering event in order to intercept any filtering that is performed on the client and translate it to something that the DomainDataSource will understand, in this case a System.Windows.Data.FilterDescriptor being added or removed from its FilterDescriptors collection. Think of RadGridView.FilterDescriptors as client-side filtering and of DomainDataSource.FilterDescriptors as server-side filtering. We no longer need the client-side one. With the introduction of the Custom Filtering Controls feature many new possibilities have opened. With these custom controls we no longer need to do any filtering on the client. I have prepared a very small project that demonstrates how to filter solely on the server by using a custom filtering control. As I have already mentioned filtering on the server is done through the FilterDescriptors collection of the DomainDataSource control. This collection holds instances of type System.Windows.Data.FilterDescriptor. The FilterDescriptor has three important properties: PropertyPath: Specifies the name of the property that we want to filter on (the left operand). Operator: Specifies the type of comparison to use when filtering. An instance of FilterOperator Enumeration. Value: The value to compare with (the right operand). An instance of the Parameter Class. By adding filters, you can specify that only entities which meet the condition in the filter are loaded from the domain context. In case you are not familiar with these concepts you might find Brad Abrams blog interesting. Now, our requirements are to create some kind of UI that will manipulate the DomainDataSource.FilterDescriptors collection. When it comes to collections, my first choice of course would be RadGridView. If you are not familiar with the Custom Filtering Controls concept I would strongly recommend getting acquainted with my step-by-step tutorial Custom Filtering with RadGridView for Silverlight and checking the online example out. I have created a simple custom filtering control that contains a RadGridView and several buttons. This control is aware of the DomainDataSource instance, since it is operating on its FilterDescriptors collection. In fact, the RadGridView that is inside it is bound to this collection. In order to display filters that are relevant for the current column only, I have applied a filter to the grid. This filter is a Telerik.Windows.Data.FilterDescriptor and is used to filter the little grid inside the custom control. It should not be confused with the DomainDataSource.FilterDescriptors collection that RadGridView is actually bound to. These are the RIA filters. Additionally, I have added several other features. For example, if you have specified a DataFormatString on your original column, the Value column inside the custom control will pick it up and format the filter values accordingly. Also, I have transferred the data type of the column that you are filtering to the Value column of the custom control. This will help the little RadGridView determine what kind of editor to show up when you begin edit, for example a date picker for DateTime columns. Finally, I have added four buttons two of them can be used to add or remove filters and the other two will communicate the changes you have made to the server. If the DomainDataSource has some pre-existing filters (like I have created in the code above), our control will read them and will populate its UI accordingly. Even the filtering funnel will light-up! Remember, the funnel is controlled by the IsActive property of our control. While this is just a basic implementation, the source code is absolutely yours and you can take it from here and extend it to match your specific business requirements. Calling Web Service Functions Asynchronously from a Web Page

Over on the Asp.Net forums where I moderate, a user had a problem calling a Web Service from a web page asynchronously. I tried his code on my machine and was able to reproduce the problem. I was able to solve his problem, but only after taking the long scenic route through some of the more perplexing nuances of Web Services and Proxies. Here is the fascinating story of that journey. Start with a simple Web Service public class Service1 : System.Web.Services.WebService { [WebMethod] public string HelloWorld() { // sleep 10 seconds System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10 * 1000); return "Hello World"; } } The 10 second delay is added to make calling an asynchronous function more apparent. If you don't call the function asynchronously, it takes about 10 seconds for the page to be rendered back to the client. If the call is made from a Windows Forms application, the application freezes for about 10 seconds. Add the web service to a web site. Right-click the project and select "Add Web Reference…" Next, create a web page to call the Web Service. Note: An asp.net web page that calls an 'Async' method must have the Async property set to true in the page's header: <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Default.aspx.cs" Inherits="_Default" Async='true' %> Here is the code to create the Web Service proxy and connect the event handler. Rather than include the library it is part of, I included it in the source file to keep this example simple. The asynchronous call was made and returned immediately. About 10 seconds later, the event handler fires and we get the result. Perfect….right? Not so fast cowboy. Watch the browser during the call: What the heck? The page is waiting for 10 seconds. Even though the asynchronous call returned immediately, Asp.Net is waiting for the event to fire before it renders the page. This is NOT what we wanted. I experimented with several techniques to work around this issue. Some may erroneously describe my behavior as 'hacking' but, since no ingesting of Twinkies was involved, I do not believe hacking is the appropriate term. If you examine the proxy that was automatically created, you will find a synchronous call to HelloWorld along with an additional set of methods to make asynchronous calls. I was worried the page object would be disposed after rendering the page but the system was smart enough to keep the page object in memory to handle the callback. Both techniques have a use: Delayed Render: Say you want to verify a credit card, look up shipping costs and confirm if an item is in stock. You could have three web service calls running in parallel and not render the page until all were finished. Nice. You can send information back to the client as part of the rendered page when all the services are finished. Immediate Render: Say you just want to start a service running and return to the client. You can do that too. However, the page gets sent to the client before the service has finished running so you will not be able to update parts of the page when the service finishes running. Summary: YourFunctionAsync() and an EventHandler will not render the page until the handler fires. BeginYourFunction() and a CallBack function will render the page as soon as possible. I found all this to be quite interesting and did a lot of searching and researching for documentation on this subject….but there isn't a lot out there. The biggest clues are the parameters that can be sent to the WSDL.exe program: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7h3ystb6(VS.100).aspx Two parameters are oldAsync and newAsync. OldAsync will create the Begin/End functions; newAsync will create the Async/Event functions. Caveat: I haven't tried this but it was stated in this article. I'll leave confirming this as an exercise for the student J. Included Code: I'm including the complete test project I created to verify the findings. The project was created with VS 2008 SP1. There is a solution file with 3 projects, the 3 projects are: Web Service Asp.Net Application Windows Forms Application To decide which program runs, you right-click a project and select "Set as Startup Project". I created and played with the Windows Forms application to see if it would reveal any secrets. I found that in the Windows Forms application, the generated proxy did NOT include the Begin/Callback functions. Those functions are only generated for Asp.Net pages. SSO Configuration MMC Snap-in

This may be old news to most people but I've been away from BizTalk for about a year, so this was a welcome development for me. The other day, I was discussing with my client the various options for storing configuration data required by our project. I brought up SSO as it's something I've used with success on previous projects. The client hadn't previously used SSO and was concerned about the maintainability of configuration stored in SSO. I offered to do a quick POC to demonstrate storing/retrieving/maintaining configuration via SSO. As I set about creating the POC, I needed to download Richard Seroter's SSO configuration tool, since that's what I've used previously for managing SSO data. I went to google to track it down and was pleasantly surprised to discover that Microsoft has finally released an MMC snap-in for maintaining SSO applications. The download contains three components. The first is the MMC snap-in which allows you to create/delete applications as well as name/value pairs within an application. Next is a C# class file, SSOConfigHelper.cs, which can be used to retrieve values from an SSO application. Finally, there's an MSBuild task that allows you to deploy SSO application data with your builds. I didn't see any information as to which versions are supported, I'm using it in a BizTalk 2009 environment and it seems to work quite nicely. The download package is available here.

I recently discovered and fell in love with Roboform. In less than a week it's become indispensable. So far I've only seen Roboform's ability to fill out fields in web browsers and Windows GUI apps. I'm an app developer and sometimes I need to use Telnet/SSH. My SSH client of choice is PuTTY, but I can't find any way to integrate Roboform with PuTTY. Is this possible? If not, is there another [free] SSH client that will work with Roboform?

I'm fairly new to programming, and I've been working on many personal projects, which I'm concerned can come across as silly/unprofessional. The kind of projects I have are a Reddit Image Downloader and a tool for GM's to use in roleplaying games. I want to start building up a Github for projects in my chosen field of Data Analytics, but I'm not sure how to orgaqnize projects on my Github account. Should I create a "Professional" Github, mainly containing different analytical scripts and have a separate "Personal" account for fun little projects of mine? Or am I just overthinking this and should I just maintain account?

Apache SSLProxyMachineCertificateFile does not work

I'm setting up an Apache reverse proxy that exposes a client certificate to the remote host. I do it using SSLProxyMachineCertificateFile /etc/tls/pki/certandkey.pem Problem: The remote host does not recognize the client certificate. Notes: certandkey.pem contains the unencrypted key and the cert. from the proxy box, curl -E /etc/tls/pki/certandkey.pem https://www.remote.com works fine. It's a GoDaddy SSL certificate. It's bundled with a gd_bundle.crt. Should I use SSLProxyMachineCertificateChainFile? I'm on CentOS 6.3 with Apache 2.2.15 (SSLProxyMachineCertificateChainFile not available)

Cannot access local resource (C drive) on remote desktop

I've recently upgraded my client PC to Windows 7, and ever since I can't get local resource sharing for remote desktop to work. I'm connecting to a 2003 server which isn't is my current domain. All my optical and virtual drives are being shared, but the C drive stays hidden. I checked the options, and do indicate that I want to share my C drive. Is there any permission I should change for this to work? The server is configured correctly because when connecting from an XP client this problem doesn't occur. I've tried accessing the share directly by opening the \\tsclient\c path, but this doesn't work neither. \\tsclient only shows the other drives. Also copy 'n paste doesn't seem to work neither(tried restarting rdpclip to no avail), getting Cannot copy file File.dat, the device is not connected.

It’s All About Expectation Management

I saw this tweet from Gerald Weinberg today: I’d expand on this – its not just managers, its our clients as well. With so much focus on “agile” and reducing the amount of wasteful documentation created, those that typically consume traditional deliverables haven’t caught up. For many, there still is a correlation between seeing a mountain of paper, or a 30 page Word document, or a 40 slide PowerPoint, and feeling like some “work” was done. The “Value Driven Development” movement is still in its infancy, even with the adoption and success stories. So, we have two options – we can complain about it, or we can learn how to live with it while continuing to evangelize about the benefits of value over bloat. The reality is that perceived value is still value, so what’s important – especially in a situation as Gerald mentions where management or clients don’t understand the work – is to find out what the manager/client values and deliver to that. That doesn’t mean you don’t discuss it. That doesn’t mean that if you see risks being represented in what a manager/client is asking you don’t question it and provide alternatives. But it does mean that you don’t slam the door on it – you don’t just toss it aside and ignore what their perceived value is. The world isn’t perfect, primarily because its filled with imperfect people. The only way to get better is to engage and not dismiss each other, even if we disagree on value.

I can definitely re-partition using partition Magic/EaseUS. 3) Also, I would not prefer keeping my OS's on SSD (in case of 14z ultra-book) It would be a great help, as I am considering to buy one of these with prime reason of Ubuntu.

Cisco VPN Connection - No internet no nothing

Hi all, Sorry if this has been posted, I tried searching but I am not exactly sure what I am looking for, I am a developer not a networking guy. We have a client whom we need to use Cisco VPN client to connect to their servers. I have installed the software, dropped in the provided .pcf file, and I can connect. However, when I do, I lose all local and internet capabilities, no hosts resolve, and I still can't connect to their internal FTP and development sites. This leads me to believe either a setting is wrong in my Cisco software, and/or their network is not correctly configured. Does anyone know anything about Cisco VPN'ing that can give me a hand? My colleague seems to indicate that they need to enable split tunneling on their end (or a similar setting).

Can't get PXE boot working on WDS + Linux DHCP server

Hi I'm trying to get WDS to PXE boot some laptops. The university is running a (linux) DHCP server for the entire network; we can't run our own. We can (and have) set options in that DHCP server to point to a tftp server and file (pxeboot.n12 on the WDS server we run). The client seems to get the pxeboot.n12 file (judging by the server logs), but then comes back with 'TFTP download failed Pres any key to reboot'. I've tried running a third-party tftp service on the WDS server, and found that the client pulls the first stage (pxeboot.n12) correctly, but then looks for the second stage (bootmgr.exe) in the root of the tftp folder - whereas WDS places it in \boot\x86\ (or \boot\x64). Similarly, it looks for a file called BCD, which doesn't exist (rather there are a few files scattered around with the extension .bcd). I'm confused if the WDS tftp server does some magic returning certain files, or if I haven't configured it correctly. The server is 2008 R2. Cheers, Victor

DHCP "no answer" on CentOS 6.4

I installed a DHCP server (yum install dhcp) and this is my conf: # create new # specify domain name option domain-name "mydomain.name"; # specify DNS's hostname or IP address option domain-name-servers 10.0.1.1, 10.0.1.2; option ntp-servers 10.0.1.1, 10.0.1.2; allow unknown-clients; # default lease time default-lease-time 2628000; # max lease time max-lease-time 2628000; # about a month # this DHCP server to be declared valid authoritative; # specify network address and subnet mask subnet 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 { # specify the range of lease IP address range dynamic-bootp 10.0.2.1 10.0.2.50; # specify broadcast address option broadcast-address 10.255.255.255; # specify default gateway option routers 10.0.0.1; allow unknown-clients; } service dhcp start reports [ OK ]. Yet, if I disable my other DHCP server (Win2k3) and get a client to try renewing its IP lease, it times out. So I installed dhcping. No matter what options I try, including directing dhcping at my server, adding a client address in the range, adding my hardware address, it replies 'no answer'. I'm also trying -i since that seems to be more akin to what a WinXP client would try to do, based on /var/log/messages. It sounds like it should be getting three answers...no? (And if that's the problem, how do I limit the DHCP service to replying from eth0?)

Using VLC as RTSP server

I'm trying to figure out how to use the server capabilities of VLC. More specifically, how to export an SDP file when RTP streaming. In chapter 4 in the section related to RTP Streaming examples for server and client are given: vlc -vvv input_stream --sout '#rtp{dst=192.168.0.12,port=1234,sdp=rtsp://server.example.org:8080/test.sdp}' vlc rtsp://server.example.org:8080/test.sdp It's not very clear to me how to make it actually work. I have tried these two commands for server and client using two cmd instances: vlc -I rc screen:// --sout=#rtp{dst=127.0.0.1,port=4444,sdp=rtsp://localhost:8080/test.sdp} vlc -I rc rtsp://localhost:8080/test.sdp Invoking the second command causes the first one to crash. The second command shows the error message "could not connect to localhost:8080".

Twitter is a popular social networking web service for writing and sharing short messages. These tidy text messages are referred to as tweets and are limited to 140 characters. Users can leave tweets and follow other users directly from Twitter's website or by using the Twitter API. Twitter's API makes it possible to integrate Twitter with external applications. For example, you can use the Twitter API to display your latest tweets on your blog. A mom and pop online store could integrate Twitter such that a new tweet was added each time a customer completed an order. And ELMAH, a popular open-source error logging library, can be configured to send error notifications to Twitter. Twitter's API is implemented over HTTP using the design principles of Representational State Transfer (REST). In a nutshell, inter-operating with the Twitter API involves a client - your application - sending an XML-formatted message over HTTP to the server - Twitter's website. The server responds with an XML-formatted message that contains status information and data. While you can certainly interface with this API by writing your own code to communicate with the Twitter API over HTTP along with the code that creates and parses the XML payloads exchanged between the client and server, such work is unnecessary since there are many community-created Twitter API libraries for a variety of programming frameworks.
