• Do you know how to move the Team Foundation Server cache

  There are a number of reasons why you may want to change the folder that you store the TFS Cache. It can take up “some” amount of room so moving it to another drive can be beneficial. This is the source control Cache that TFS uses to cache data from the database. Moving the Cache is pretty easy and should allow you to organise your server space a little more efficiently. You may also get a performance improvement (although small) by putting it on another drive.. Create a new directory to store the Cache. e.g. “d:\TfsCache\” Give the local TFS WPG group full control of the directory Figure: You need to use the App Tier service WPG In the application tier web.config (~\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config) add the following setting (to the appSettings section). <appsettings> ... <add value="D:\" key="dataDirectory" /> ... </appsettings> The app pool will automatically recycle and Team Web Access will start using the new location.  If you then download a file (not via a proxy) a folder with a GUID should be created immediately in the folder from #1.  If the folder doesn’t appear, then you probably don’t have permissions set up properly.

• How to verify that all files are intact prior to install?

  I'm working on my CMS (in PHP platform) for a long time now. The main program is done and I'm currently developing the Installer part. Installation itself will be fairly simple: Upload all files Verify that the "content/" dir has correct permissions Check if ALL files are intact and not modified [This is the subject of this question] Insert the config data and first settings Run install (Generate all DB tables and insert sample data etc.) Now the question-mark is at step 3. How do I verify ALL files? Verification itself should compare all CMS root-directories files against a list from remote location. List should contain filename, filesize and filetype. This way the user can check, that there are no unnecessary or corrupted files, that could indicated a breach in the software. I have seen some software installers do that, but I cannot find any right now and there for I'm clueless on the most optimal method for this. Of course there always is a simple array trick, but there surely must be a better and faster method?!

• System speakers not recognized

  Since upgrading to Xubuntu 13.10, sound has not functioned properly (e.g. screeching when playing Skype notifications). Now, however, it does not function at all. pavucontrol only shows Dummy Output and does not recognize the built-in speakers on my Dell Precision M4600. Possibly related, the sound indicator applet does not come up when I click on it, only showing a small white bar underneath it. • Using AdSense to show ads to logged-in users

  I know that you can grant authorization permissions to Google AdSense so that it can 'log in' and see what other logged in users can see (e.g. in a private forum), so that the ads it displays are better targetted. Extending this principle further: I am making a site which will show completely different content for each individual user (i.e. not 'common' content like a forum in which everybody sees essentially the same thing). You could think of this content as similar to the way each Facebook user has a different news feed, but it is the 'same' page. Complicating things further, the URLs for this site will be simple, e.g. '/home' and '/somepage', and will not usually include unique identifiers to differentiate between users (e.g. '/home?user=32i42'). My questions are: Is creating an account purely for AdSense to log in to the site with worth it in this case, seeing as it will be seeing it's own 'personalized' version and not any other user's? More importantly: is that against the Google AdSense Terms of Service? (I can't seem to figure that one out) How would you go about this problem?

• Create MSDB Folders Through Code

  You can create package folders through SSMS, but you may also wish to do this as part of a deployment process or installation. In this case you will want programmatic method for managing folders, so how can this be done? The short answer is, go and look at the table msdb.dbo. sysdtspackagefolders90. This where folder information is stored, using a simple parent and child hierarchy format. To add new folder directly we just insert into the table - INSERT INTO dbo.sysdtspackagefolders90 ( folderid ,parentfolderid ,foldername) VALUES ( NEWID() -- New GUID for our new folder ,<<Parent Folder GUID>> -- Lookup the parent folder GUID if a child or another folder, or use the root GUID 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 ,<<Folder Name>>) -- New folder name There are also some stored procedures - sp_dts_addfolder sp_dts_deletefolder sp_dts_getfolder sp_dts_listfolders sp_dts_renamefolder To add a new folder to the root we could call the sp_dts_addfolder to stored procedure - EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_dts_addfolder @parentfolderid = '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000' -- Root GUID ,@name = 'New Folder Name The stored procedures wrap very simple SQL statements, but provide a level of security, as they check the role membership of the user, and do not require permissions to perform direct table modifications.

• Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it. Here is what I got: tom@desktop:~$ sudo deluser shirley [sudo] password for tom: Removing user `shirley' ... Warning: group `shirley' has no more members.   I am currently using a PHP CMS - cmsmadesimple - in order to create a website where services will be sold. I intend to use Paypal 'Buy Now' buttons in order to offer a few packages that will be renewable every 1-month or every 3-months and that grant access to the secure content of the website for a given period of time. Everything is going well so far but I am somewhat at loss for the user registration process as I have a few constraints I would like to use and it would be nice to automate the process if possible. Here are the constraints : User should be able to register to my website and choose a password himself Only users that paid should be able to register Access permissions should be disabled automatically after the service period if the package is not renewed And here is the process which I am thinking of : User clicks 'buy' on my website User is redirected on Paypal and completes the payment The paypal email used to pay should be returned to my server and somehow stored If it is a new email, user needs to register to my website (else if it is a returning customer, the deactivation flag for payment stopped should be removed to give back access) If a user does not renew his subscription, there should be a deactivation flag automatically set to the email used in order to lock access until next payment. Ideally, no human intervention is needed. What is the best way to implement all this? I am a bit at loss. I found this article that explained a few things and even has a nice code snippet, except that I'm not sure where to plug it. Thanks all

• SQL SERVER – FIX ERROR – Cannot connect to . Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)

  Just a day ago, I was doing small attempting to connect to my local SQL Server using IP 127.0.0.1. The IP is of my local machine and SQL Server is installed on the local box as well. However, whenever I try to connect to the server it gave me following strange error. Cannot connect to 127.0.0.1. Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) The reason was indeed strange as I was trying to connect from local box to local box and it said my login was from an untrusted domain. As my system is not part of any domain, this was really confusing to me. Another thing was that I have been always able to connect always using 127.0.0.1 to SQL Server and this was a bit strange to me. I started to think what did I change since it  last time I connected to SQL Server. Suddenly I remembered that I had modified my computer’s host file for some other purpose. Solution: I opened my host file and immediately added entry like 127.0.0.1 localhost. Once I added it I was able to reconnect to SQL Server as usual. The location of the host file is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. You will find file with the name hosts in it, make sure to open it with notepad. If you are part of a domain and your organization is using active directory, make sure that your account is added properly to active directory as well have proper security permissions to execute the task. • Update to SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility

  Last spring I released a utility to script SQL Server configuration information on CodePlex.  I’ve been making small changes in this application as my needs have changed.  The application is a .NET 2.0 console application.  This utility serves two needs for me.  First it helps with disaster recovery.  All server level objects (logins, jobs, linked servers, audits) are scripted to a single file per object type.  This enables the scripts to be easily run against a DR server.  If these are checked into source control you can view the history of the script and find out what changed and when. The second goal is to capture what changed inside a database.  Objects inside a database (tables, stored procedures, views, etc.) are each scripted to their own file.  This makes it easier to track the changes to an object over time.  This does include permissions and role membership so you can capture security changes.  My assumption is that a database backup is the primary method of disaster recovery for databases so this utility is designed to capture changes to objects.  You can find the full list of changes from the original on the Downloads page on CodePlex.

• Subdomain still times out after set up a month ago

  I'm a newbie on this and this has probably been asked already but the subjects online were close but too vague in there answers so I've probably really messed this up. I would really appreciate specific step by step instructions. This is what I'd like to do: use the subdomain www.high-res.domain.com to be accessed by external customers with specific permissions to access the site (like ftp). We use Network Solutions to house domain.com. We recently added a new ip address to point to www.high-res.domain.com. I gave the ip address to the company that hosts our website. I pinged www.high-res.domain.com and it points to the correct ip address but still times out. It’s been a few weeks now and when you ping it, it still times out. C:ping XXX.XXX.X.XXX Pinging XXX.XXX.X.XXX with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for XXX.XXX.X.XXX: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss). Tracert times out as well. I even went to DNS tools and a few other sites for checking this and it shows the same thing. I recently went into the DNSmgmt on our server (wink2k3sp1) and created an A record under the DomainDnsZones which translated to a Cname when you look at it. Under the Domain it has two entries one to the subdomain and the other to the website host each with separate ip addresses. Is this correct? The website people are too busy on another project to research it further and my friends haven't gotten back to me. Please help. Thanks KK

• JDK8 New Build Infrastructure

  I unintentionally posted this before I verified everything, so once I have verified it all works, I'll updated this post. But this is what should work... Most Interesting Builder in the World: "I don't always build the jdk, but when I do, I prefer The New JDK8 Build Infrastructure. Stay built, my friends." So the new Build Infrastructure changes have been integrated into the jdk8/build forest along side the older Makefiles (newer in makefiles/ and older ones in make/). The default is still the older makefiles. Instructions can be found in the Build-Infra Project User Guide. The Build-Infra project's goal is to create the fastest build possible and correct many of the build issues we have been carrying around for years. I cannot take credit for much of this work, and wish to recognize the people who do so much work on this (and will probably still do more), see the New Build Infrastructure Changeset for a list of these talented and hard working JDK engineers. A big "THANK YOU" from me. Of course, every OS and system is different, and the focus has been on Linux X64 to start, Ubuntu 11.10 X64 in particular. So there are at least a base set of system packages you need. On Ubuntu 11.10 X64, you should run the following after getting into a root permissions situation (e.g. have run "sudo bash"): apt-get install aptitude aptitude update aptitude install mercurial openjdk-7-jdk rpm ssh expect tcsh csh ksh gawk g++ build-essential lesstif2-dev Then get the jdk8/build sources: hg clone http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk8/build jdk8-build cd jdk8-build sh ./get_source.sh Then do your build: cd common/makefiles bash ../autoconf/configure make We still have lots to do, but this is a tremendous start. -kto

• Why can't I run any Android NDK commands?

  I had been running Mint 12 before, and everything was working there. I switched to Ubuntu 12.04, and now I am very frustrated. When I run ndk-build, I get /home/buzz/ndk/prebuilt/linux-x86/bin/make: not found So, I changed to that folder directly. When I type in ./make, I get bash: ./make: No such file or directory Typing ls clearly shows the file where I am! I did some hacking around (pointing to external tools) to get past each error (just to experiment), and I ran into this! /home/buzz/ndk/toolchains/arm-linux-androideabi-4.6/prebuilt/linux-x86/bin/arm-linux-androideabi-gcc: Command not found Why? Why are all these files unable to be found? As I said above, this was all working just fine in another distro. What changed? What's extra frustrating is that if I push TAB to auto-complete, it works. So, the file is clearly there (and clearly marked with execution permissions). So, why can't it be found?

• How to collaborate on features using github

  github encourages 1 fork per user, so that that user can work independently on a feature and then request that feature to be accepted into the main repository via pull request. However, what if 2 developers need to collaborate on that feature? What is the ideal workflow for this? I could see a number of options: Both developers fork the original repository. Each developer pulls/pushes changes between each other's repository. This seems like a lot of work (tiny micro operations) and also creates a delay between changes, so increases the window for conflicts. Developer 1 forks from the main repository, developer 2 forks from developer 1. Same as #1 mainly but hopefully simplifies Developer 2's life a little? Developer 1 gives Developer 2 permissions to his own fork, so they both work out of the same central repository. Not sure if this is ideal. I'm also curious where branches come into this. Obviously there would be a branch for the feature itself but that branch can't exist in a single place, it would have to exist on multiple forks and be synchronized. Basically just really confused about this workflow, would like an approach for how this can be best accomplished.

• Virtualization in Ubuntu 11.10

  Since Ubuntu 11.10 use a new kernel, it's very difficult to have a decent support for virtualization. VirtualBox doesn't support guest additions for ubuntu 11.10, so I can't copy to and from my ubuntu desktop and windows, which I absolutely require, plus FreeBSD seems not to be able to use DHCP without guest additions. Virt-manager instead gives an error on launch: Unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon. • How can I stop a process from moving to the background?

  I have a machine running Ubuntu server version 12.04.3 LTS. On it, I'm attempting to run a node.js server that needs to stay up and running at all times. I'm running into an issue, however, where periodically I see this happen: [1]+ Stopped sudo node server.js When this happens, I have to manually bring it back with fg, which works fine, at least until it stops again. As far as I can tell, it isn't functioning properly while stopped, since I get no log files in those windows of time. So my question is this: Is there a way to prevent it from being stopped like that? I'm running it in a tmux window, if that changes anything. Also, to address the question before it gets asked: I'm running it as sudo due to some ecryptfs issues I've been having. I was originally running it in my home directory, but when it was left alive for too long things would get out of sync and the file writes it has to do would just stop working. To mitigate that, I moved it out of my home directory, but its new location requires me to use sudo permissions for everything to work correctly. Hopefully that isn't related to the whole background task thing. (sudo and tmux tags included in case one or both turn out to actually be relevant to the solution.)

I've evaluated a number of them, but none of them seems to have the feature list that I would like: Run on LAMP environment Free software or low license costs (the website belongs to a non-profit organisation) Multi-user support Multiple albums. We're posting concert pictures, and would like an album per event. Pluggable authentication system. I want to reuse the accounts we have for our CMS. Permissions can be done inside the gallery itself, but I want to have a single sign on solution in a maintainable manner, by writing my own plugin/add-on for the software. Upload support (multiple images at the same time) And preferrably also: Can be integrated into a PHP page layout without IFRAMEs Automatic resizing of uploaded images to a maximum size Ability for visitors to place comments This combination is proving hard to find, especially the authentication requirement. I don't want to mess around all over the place in the source code to make it use the existing authentication. A plugin would be ideal, but alternatively a well thought out software design that allows for maintainable surgical changes would be acceptable. Any suggestions on which software I should take a closer look into?

• Only one user can connect to Ubuntu samba server

  I setup a samba server on 12.04 LTS, and it works great for one user but not the others. I am trying to map a network drive from a windows 7 laptop. I can successfully authenticate with one user, but the other two both get "Access is denied" errors. Here is my smb.conf file. I changed all the users so they are all members of the same groups (all three users are admins anyway). I only ever have one user connected at a time. • Can't write to disk

  I have seen questions similar to this, but the answers are either beyond me or the situation doesn't quite match mine. Would appreciate some direction. I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The OS is on a disk formatted as ext4. I added another disk to the system and formatted it as W95 FAT 32 (LBA) (0x0c). I did this because I am moving from Windows to Linux, will be needing to go back and forth with data for a while, and might need to move the disk to a Windows machine. There may have been a better format to use, but if so I didn't know any better. I was able to transfer data from an external drive to this FAT32 drive with no problem. Now, though, when I try to create a new folder or write a file to the disk I get a message that the disk is read-only. If I go to the properties, permissions for the disk, for Folder Access it says 'create and delete files'. If I try to change File Access underneath to 'read and write', either nothing happens or I get a message it can't be done. Thank you for any help.

• Windows Physical Direct Memory Mapping

  I'm a bit disappointed there is almost no discussion of this no matter where I look so I guess I'll have to ask. I'm writing a cross platform memory bench marking application which requires direct physical address mapping rather than virtual addressing. EDIT The solution would look something like the Linux/Unix system calls: int fd = open("/dev/mem", O_RDONLY); mmap(NULL, len, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, fd, PHYSICAL_ADDRESS_OFFSET); which will require the kernel to either give you a virtual page mapping to the desired physical address or return that it failed. This does require supervisor privileges but that is ok. I have seen a lot of information about shared memory and memory mapped files but all of these reside on disc and are thus not really useful when I'm trying to make a system dependent read. It is very similar to writing an IO driver although I do no need write permissions to the physical address. This site gives an example of how to do it on a driver level using the Windows Driver Kit: NT Insider: Sharing Memory between drivers and applications This solution would probably require Visual Studio which currently I do not have access to. (I have downloaded the WDK api but it complained about my use of GCC for Windows). I'm traditionally a Linux programmer so I'm hoping there might be something really simple I'm missing. • In virtualbox, I can't access the dvd drive to install a guest host

  I have installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu Server 12.04 and VirtualBox 4.3. I have set up a VM called "MediaServer" and tried to start it. I then get the following error: Cannot open host device '/dev/sr0' for readonly access. Check the permissions of that device ('/bin/ls -l /dev/sr0'): Most probably you need to be member of the device group. Make sure that you logout/login after changing the group settings of the current user (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED) I have looked all over the Internet and have been unable to find a solution. Using Webmin, I tried changing the group settings so that my user name was in the "vboxusers" group, but that did not work either. I tried various other changes in group settings and none of them worked. Also, I tried rebooting the server after the changes and that didn't work either. I have been following a guide on how to set up an Ubuntu server from the website "linuxhomeserverguide.com" and when it came to the section where you could finally set up your first virtual machine, I am stumped. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thanks in advance.

  I am having this problem in ubuntu 12.04, but I fin strange that when I go to /tmp it wont allow me to delete some files, with message "Operation not permitted" or "this file could not be handled because you dont have permissions to read it". It is only a PC and I have the root password. I was trying to get at least 2000 MB of free space on the root file system to upgrade to 12.10 and see if that resolved the problem. Currently free space on root file system is 190 MB.   I am new to android. I have just downloaded and installed android sdk. Now when I run the application from eclipse, my device is not getting detected. I have googled and was brought up with this as my solution, but that also didn't worked. • Cannot access windows share

  I have an accounting program specifically tailored to the IT industry, its called Fincon (exe based). It basically works on a client to server directory base system. the server is currently running on a windows 7 machine with a NTFS partition. I have installed Wine. Have the shared Windows directory mounted with what I assume is the correct command for such being (mount -tsmbfs //servername/sharedir /mnt/fincon -0 usename=username,password=password). I can see the shared dir although it does take a bit long to access it on the Ubuntu machine via the mapped directory but instant via normal network browsing. I have also set up the mapped directory to my D: drive in Wine and have pointed the fincon.ini to read server field from D: directly. Here's my issue, it seems that for some odd reason I cant write to the mapped directory from Ubuntu, yet I can with my Windows machines, the permissions are set correct on the Windows 7 share and I really dunno what I'm missing. I'm quite a Linux noob just switched yesterday. Thanks guys for any help in this would be quite appreciated. As I'm pulling out my hair here and really want to migrate my work PCs to a Linux OS as it just gives less issues than Windows does ever.
