• Which language is more suitable heavy file tasks?

  I need to write a script (based on basic functions) to process /image/audio/video files. The process is mainly filesystem tasks and converts. The database of files has been stored by mysql. The script is simple but cause heavy tasks on the system; for example renaming/converting/copying thousands of file in a run. The script does not read the content of files into memory, it just manage the commands for sub-processes. The main weight is on the communication with filesystem. The script will be used regularly for new files. My concern is about performance. I am thinking of Shell script a complied language like C Please advise which programming language is more suitable for this purpose and why? UPDATE: An example is to scan a folder for images, convert them with ImageMagick, move files to destination folder, get file info, then update the database. As you can see, the process has no room for optimization, and most of languages have similar APIs for popular programs like ImageMagick, MySQL, etc. Thus, it can be written in any language. I just wish to reduce resource usage by speeding up the long loop. NOTE: I know that questions about comparing languages are not favorable, but I really had problem to choose, because the problems can appear in action.

• Problem with APTonCD application

  I created a iso image using aptoncd & burned it to a dvd. Now when i tried to restore, the program does not detect the dvd in the drive. It shows "Please insert a disc in the drive." and if we click "ok" it shows E: Failed to mount the cdrom. The dvd is in the drive itself.   I want the display text on an Action on a Node to show something about the underlying object. But the Action is registered somewhere in the layer (i.e., in the registry), i.e., I have no control over it. How do I change the display text in this scenario? Here's how. • What tools can be used to download all images in a webpage?

  I would like to download all images in a web page. The tool should be smart enough to examine the css and javascript files in the page source to look for the images. Ideally, it should also replicate the folder hierarchy, saving the images in the correct folder. For example, the web page may have some images for menu items stored in images/menu/ and for background images it may be stored in images/bg/. Is there such a tool that you know of?   i need procmail to place incoming mail into specific folder depending on some set of rules. I know how i can accomplish this, but i need to write static set of rules in a specific file. What i really need is to configure procmail to use rules stored in mysql database. How i can do this? I've read a bit about that and one solution i found is to pipe message to a php/perl script and return a folder name to place message. But i have completely no i idea how to use php script as a rule and then use its return value.

• Windows 7, weird/annoying explorer problem

  First of all, I'm asking the moderators if you could summarize my problem in the Title and modify it according to that. Thanks in advance and sorry, my english is not that good. The problem. It happened on two of my machines already. Once it happens there are many problems with explorer. I'll try to describe at precisely I just can. So. Basically when you create a new folder, you have to hit the enter key TWICE because first it'll throw an error that "there is no such file..". Okay. Then if you try to delete some, this happens also. Renaming is the same. Here is an example. I tried adding a "2" to the end of the folder name, hit enter and got this. Here I can press cancel, nothing happens. If I press retry, the popup disappears and it'll finally change the folder name. I can't come up with anything for this. Using BitDefender (registered, full protection), Windows 7 x86 Ultimate retail (boxed, english version). The other PC had the same anti-virus protection , but it have a Windows 7 x64. Both systems are activated, updated totally. I don't remember installing any new stuff on the PCs. All the stuff on the PCs are legal, no cracked / any other software present. It just happened, so to say. Already reinstalled the other PC because I thought * I * messed up something and its just something FUBAR. However, I dont want to reinstall my laptop also. Any ideas are welcome. (Today I had a strange bug. Windows Explorer had 1.0+gb memory usage with 100% cpu. Killed it, launched a new explorer.exe and thats all. Nothing changed, but it may worth a try. The other PC did NOT have this problem, ever.) Isn't there a registry fix for this or something? :/

• Problem with recursive rar archiving non-ascii filenames

  Say I want to create a backup of folder MainFolder's content using rar. The command rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder does the job. BUT, if a subdirectory contains more than one file named with non-ASCII (?) characters, then only one of them is archived and the others get excluded. For example, consider the following directory hierarchy (MainFolder, A and B are folders; a, b, ? and ? are files) +MainFolder +A -a -b -? -? +B -a -b -a -b -? -? then the command rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder skips MainFolder/A/? MainFolder/? while rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder/* still skips MainFolder/A/? Why is it so? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks! For the record, I already encountered some issues with non-ascii characters (see this question) that other Linux distributions seem not to have. Anyway, I use Lubuntu 12.04, terminal is lxterminal and echo $BASH_VERSION returns 4.2.25(1)-release. rar version is 4.00 beta 3. Another curiosity: right-clicking on the folder and selecting Compress... and then .rar still has the same problem. Other options (zip, tar...) behave correctly.

• Ubuntu 12.04.3 64 bit with Nemo 2.0.x no thumbnails

  I have strange problem with thumbnails in my Ubuntu machine. I was using Ubuntu with Cinnamon 1.8 from stable ppa and it was good but then Cinnamon 2.0 came out with some broken packages uploaded to stable ppa nad things gone wrong... Anyway after few updates Cinnamon started to work normaly except Nemo - there are no thumbnails at all, only icons. I heve tried purging /.cache/thumbnails and .thumbnails folders but this doesn't work. Next I have changed permissions for those folders - that didn't helped either. Then I've set Nemo as default file manager and desktop handler but with no result. What is weird - when I start Nautilus and open some folder with images then close it and open same folder with Nemo thumbnails appears but when I clean thumbnails directories there are no thumbnails again. It would be great if someone have some solution for this annoying Nemo behavior because I really don't want to resign from Cinnamon. p.s. I have set preview options in Nemo for Always and no bigger files than 4GB so that is not the case.

  I want to access and play media files on machine S (Windows XP) from machine C (Windows XP). Using Windows File Sharing ("share this folder" stuff), if it works, I would share the folder containing media files on machine S, and I would be able to play media files, sitting in front of C, using any media player I want. Windows somehow ensures that the remote files behave like local files. But Windows file sharing won't work for me, is there any alternative? If two machines were both Linux, I would install an SSH server on S and use Nautilus from C to access and play media files. The reason why I can't use Windows file sharing is, my campus use two different subnets, I have S and C on different subnets and it seems that the firewall governing the whole network in campus doesn't allow file sharing between different subnets. I tried changing Windows Firewall settings on S to allow C in, it still wouldn't work, so it must be the other firewall.

In Samba, I have created the following user: <www-data> = "<www-data>" And given guest ok for the www folder: [www] comment = Ubuntu WWW area path = /var/www browsable = yes guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0755 ;directory mask = 0775 force user = www-data force group = www-data I've also run sudo chmod -R 755 www to make ensure correct rw access. What am I missing in order to get write access to my ubuntu files from Windows?

• Can I make ssh tell me which control file it would use for multiplexing?

  I am using the following options in my ~/.ssh/config in order to enable connection multiplexing: ControlMaster auto ControlPath ~/.ssh/control/master-%r@%h:%p However, this has the annoying problem that the first shell to connect to a particular server must be the last to disconnect, because it is the master connection that all the other connections are using. So if you log out of the master, it appears to just hang. To solve this, I would like to wrap ssh with a script that checks if the control master file exists, and if not, starts a master ssh process in the background. Then it would start a slave ssh session. In order to accomplish this, my script would have to determine the path to the control file that ssh would use. This would entail parsing the ssh command line options and config files and implementing the logic for determining the ControlPath. Is there any way to just ask ssh what path it would use, so I can check it?

• SSH to an ubuntu machine using avahi

  I have an ubuntu box that I connect to using avahi. Connecting to that box works fine for all services (I regularly use AFP, SSH and SMB on it) but I've noticed that whenever I connect to it from a mac using SSH (and using the ".local" dns name provided by avahi - eg. "ssh .local") SSH tries to connect using ipv6, which for some reason times out (after two minutes) then it tries ipv4 which connects immediately. I'd like to avoid this timeout, as it's really annoying for me and other users - if SSH tried ipv4 first or if ssh over ipv6 worked then that would solve the problem. But so far I've been unable to get either to work (the best I've managed is to specify the "-4" option to SSH to stop it from trying ipv6 at all). I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. Any solution has to be on the server (not the client) as there are multiple clients connecting. A possible complication might be that my LAN is set up to allow link-local ipv6 addresses only, but I have other servers (using Mac OS) that I can SSH into using ipv6) I suspect that the problem could be solved by either preventing avahi from broadcasting the ipv6 address, or by enabling ssh over ipv6, but so far as I can tell avahi is already configured not to broadcast the ipv6 address and sshd is configured to allow ipv6 connections!   I installed Ubuntu 12.04, with texlive-full and texworks. When I double-click a .tex file in Nautilus, it pops up a Do you want to run "xxxxxxxx.tex", or display it contents? "xxxxxxxx.tex" is an executable text file. Run in Terminal Display Cancel Run If I choose Display, it opens texworks. How can I make it open without seeing the above conversation window? By the way, is .tex file indeed an executable file? ADDED Just for the case, my ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list file looks like the following: [Default Applications] text/html=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/http=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/https=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/about=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/unknown=google-chrome.desktop text/x-tex=texworks.desktop x-scheme-handler/mailto=google-chrome.desktop [Added Associations] text/x-tex=texworks.desktop; text/x-bibtex=jabref.desktop;gedit.desktop; I observe texworks are both up and down. I have my Dropbox account synced with the Windows 7 host, and I access files in Dropbox in Ubuntu through Virtual Box's shared folder functionality. (I didn't install Dropbox client in Ubuntu.) Files in Dropbox are owned by root with group vboxsf. My personal account is in the group vboxsf. It seems that I have to uncheck the option for "executable", but I have all my .tex files in the Dropbox shared folder. Would there be any workaround?

• Have both domain and non-domain users use NetApp CIFS storage

  My specific use case is that I have a NetApp CIFS storage that's in the domain, say, intranet. But I also have one hyper-v host that's not in the domain. I can't allow it into the domain, but I need to create guests whose VHD is on the storage. How can I achieve this? When I simply connect to a CIFS share and create a VHD there, it works, but when I try to add that VHD to the virtual machine, I get a "Failed to set folder permissions" error - probably due to folder ownership being in the domain admin. Is there a way around this? So both domain and non-domain users use the same directory?

• SVN Server not responding

  I've been bashing my head against a wall with this one all day and I would greatly appreciate a few more eyes on the problem at hand. We have an in-house SVN Server that contains all live and development code for our website. Our live server can connect to this and get updates from the repository. This was all working fine until we migrated the SVN Server from a physical machine to a vSphere VM. Now, for some reason that continues to fathom me, we can no longer connect to the SVN Server. The SVN Server runs CentOS 6.2, Apache and SVN 1.7.2. SELinux is well and trully disabled and the problem remains when iptables is stopped. Our production server does run an older version of CentOS and SVN but the same system worked previously so I don't think that this is the issue. Of note, if I have iptables enabled, using service iptables status, I can see a single packet coming in and being accepted but the production server simply hangs on any svn command. If I give up waiting and do a CTRL-C to break the process I get a "could not connect to server". To me it appears to be something to do with the SVN Server rejecting external connections but I have no idea how this would happen. Any thoughts on what I can try from here? • Shared mailbox - users cannot create or view subfolders

  I've setup a shared mailbox on our Exchange 2010/SBS2011 server. I've added some users as Full permission-users on this mailbox, and when they open Outlook/login to OWA the mailbox is automatically opened. Great stuff. However, only the Inbox folder is visible, and the alternative to create a folder is grayed out. If they open the mailbox explicitly (for instance in OWA by clicking open other user's mailbox) they can see other folders, as well as create new ones. What configuration is needed to be able to view and create subfolders directly?

• Domain changes required for SSL integration

  Currently my site supports regular payment options (User is taken to Payment Gateway/PG website). Now I'm trying to implement "seamless" PG integration. I need SSL for this. I'm having a dedicated server with 5 static IPs from Hostgator/HG. options: I take SSL for www.my_domain.com. According to HG, I need to change IP of main site as current IP is not really dedicated as it is being shared by cpanel etc. So They need to bind another dedicated IP to main domain for SSL to work. This would required DNS change for main website and hence cause few hours downtime (which is ok). I've noticed that most of the e-commerce websites are using subdomains like secure.my_domain.com for ssl/https. This sounds like a better approach. But I've got few doubts in this case: a) Would I need to re-register with existing PGs (Paypal, Google Checkout, Authorize.net) if I switch to subdomain? Re-registering is not an option for me. b) Would DNS change be required for www.my_domain.com in this case. This confusion arose because of following reply from HG : "If the sub domain secure.my_domain.com is added to an existing cPanel it will use the IP for that cPanel so as long as it is a Dedicated IP that will be fine. If secure.my_domain.com gets setup as its own cPanel it will need to be assigned to a Dedicated IP which would have a DNS change involved.". Please suggest?

• Exim redirect all unexisting accounts for local domains to a specific account

  I want to route all incoming emails for local domains only to a single account if an account is not setup for that user. I would also like each email to be written in it's own file in user folder. I have a catchall user with /home/catchall/ path where I have a mail folder made for this but so far emails wither fail to deliver (thus my rule did not work) or they do deliver to /etc/mail/catchall file. I have been trying to put something together from the Exim configuration but so far nothing seem to work. http://exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch20.html
