  • What Gets Measured Gets Managed

    OK, so if I were to claim credit for inventing that expression, I guess I could share the mantle with Al Gore, creator of the Internet. But here's the point: How many of us acquire CRM systems without specifically benchmarking several key performance indicators across sales, marketing and service BEFORE and AFTER deployment of said system? Yes, this may sound obvious and it might provoke the, "Well of course, Diamond!" response, but is YOUR company doing this? Can you define in quantitative terms the delta across multiple parameters? I just trolled the Web site of one of my favorite sales consultancy firms, The Alexander Group. Right on their home page is a brief appeal citing the importance of benchmarking. The corresponding landing page states, "The fact that hundreds of sales executives now track how their sales forces spend time means they attach great value to understanding how much time sellers actually devote to selling." The opportunity is to extend this conversation to benchmarking the success that companies derive from the investment they make in CRM systems, i.e., to the automation side of the equation. To a certain extent, the 'game' is analogous to achieving optimal physical fitness. One may never quite get there, but beyond the 95% threshold of "excellence," she/he may be entering the realm of splitting infinitives. But at the very start, and to quote verbiage from the aforementioned Alexander Group Web page, what gets measured gets managed. And getting to that 95% level along several key indicators would be a high quality problem indeed, don't you think? Yes, this could be a "That's so 90's" conversation, but is it really?

  • How to sysprep SQL Server Express?

    We plan to deploy Hyper-V VHD with Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2012 Express installed to multiple hosts. From my understanding, the correct way to do this is to install SQL Server in prepartion mode, sysprep Windows, then complete SQL Server installation when the VHD is deployed. I mostly followed the process in this blog post: http://sethusrinivasan.com/category/sysprep/ However, after the VHD is deployed, I'm unable to complete the SQL Server installation. It keeps saying "Upgrade matrix is incorrect". It seems that it's trying to upgrade itself to Enterprise edition (I was asked for product key during install, but I skipped it). Could anyone share their experience in deploying VHDs with SQL Server (we're fine with either SQL Server 2008 R2 or 2012)? I think the source of my issue is because I can't select "Express Edition" when entering the product key at the completion stage, so the installation is trying to do an upgrade to Enterprise Edition. I have no idea why the drop down list is empty.

    I am having some trouble setting up Dynamic DNS with my Fritz!Box 7360. I have set up the Dynamic DNS page with (this is translated from German, so might be worded a bit differently): [x] Use dynamic DNS Dynamic DNS Provider: User defined Update-URL: https://freedns.afraid.org/dynamic/update.php?MY-DIRECT-URL-KEY Domain Name: mydomain.crabdance.com User Name: myusername Password: mypassword Now on the FritzBox status page, it says: Dynamic DNS: activated, mydomain.crabdance.com, Status: Account temprarily deactivated When I check back on http://freedns.afraid.org, my IP address never changes. Is there any way to fix this? Note my router is on an IPv6 network (m-net), with IPv4 only through DS-Lite. I'm not sure whether this affects anything. Update: Following the guide here (putting myusername instead of MY-DIRECT-URL-KEY) hasn't given any succes. However, the status field has changed slightly: Dynamic DNS: activated, mydomain.crabdance.com, Status: unknown

  • GnuPG PHP gnupg Folder & Files Permission

    Situation: we plan on using PHP's GnuPG extension to encrypt/decrypt files. Currently we've setup some test cases, using keys generated with GPG. The generated files reside in: /Users/username/.gnupg/ I am able to get keyinfo for the key I want to use to encrypt/decrypt, but when I attempt to use addencryptkey, I get: (E_WARNING: 2): gnupg::addencryptkey() [gnupg.addencryptkey]: get_key failed I think this is due to the permissions on the ~/.gnupg folder & enclosed files. The files are owned by me - username, but apache runs as www. A few days ago I did have this working, but it seems each time I use GPG Keychain Access to import / export a key, the folder's permissions are changed. Question: What are the exact permissions required to allow PHP's GnuPG to add encrypt & decrypt keys?

  • Reality behind wireless security - the weakness of encrypting

    I welcome better key-wording here, both on tags and title, and I'll add more links as soon as possible. For some years I'm trying to conceive a wireless environment that I'd setup anywhere and advise for everyone, including from big enterprises to small home networks of 1 machine. I've always had the feeling using any kind of the so called "wireless security" methods is actually a bad design. I'm talking mostly about encrypting and pass-phrasing (which are actually two different concepts), since I won't even considering hiding SSID and mac filtering. I understand it's a natural way of thinking. With cable networking nobody can access the network unless they have access to the physical cable, so you're "secure" in the physical way. In a way, encrypting is for wireless what walling (building walls) is for the cables. And giving pass-phrases is adding a door with a key. But the cabling without encryption is also insecure. Someone just need to plugin and get your data! And while I can see the use for encrypting data, I don't think it's a security measure in wireless networks. As I said elsewhere, I believe we should encrypt only sensitive data regardless of wires. And passwords should be added to the users, always, not to wifi. For securing files, truly, best solution is backup. Sure all that doesn't happen that often, but I won't consider the most situations where people just don't care. I think there are enough situations where people actually care on using passwords on their OS users, so let's go with that in mind. For being able to break the walls or the door someone will need proper equipment such as a hammer or a master key of some kind. Same is true for breaking the wireless walls in the analogy. But, I'd say true data security is at another place. I keep promoting the Fonera concept as an instance. It opens up a free wifi port, if you choose so, and anyone can connect to the internet through that, without having any access to your LAN. It also uses a QoS which will never let your bandwidth drop from that public usage. That's security, and it's open. And who doesn't want to be able to use internet freely anywhere you can find wifi spots? I have 3G myself, but that's beyond the point here. If I have a wifi at home I want to let people freely use it for internet as to not be an hypocrite and even guests can easily access my files, just for reading access, so I don't need to keep setting up encryption and pass-phrases that are not whole compatible. I'll probably be bashed for promoting the non-usage of WPA 2 with AES or whatever, but I wanted to know from more experienced (super) users out there: what do you think? Is there really a need for encryption to have true wireless security?

  • Cisco SR520w FE - WAN Port Stops Working

    I have setup a Cisco SR520W and everything appears to be working. After about 1-2 days, it looks like the WAN port stops forwarding traffic to the Internet gateway IP of the device. If I unplug and then plug in the network cable connecting the WAN port of the SR520W to my Comcast Cable Modem, traffic startings flowing again. Also, if I restart the SR520W, the traffic will flow again. Any ideas?   • Cisco 891w multiple VLAN configuration

    I'm having trouble getting my guest network up. I have VLAN 1 that contains all our network resources (servers, desktops, printers, etc). I have the wireless configured to use VLAN1 but authenticate with wpa2 enterprise. The guest network I just wanted to be open or configured with a simple WPA2 personal password on it's own VLAN2. I've looked at tons of documentation and it should be working but I can't even authenticate on the guest network! I've posted this on cisco's support forum a week ago but no one has really responded.     For some time I've been interested in binding the Windows Key (Super_L) on my keyboard to Copy and Paste for no other reason but convenience and consistency between my desktop and my MacBook.     The full error in Microsoft Visual Studio on a compile looks like this: error CS1548: Cryptographic failure while signing assembly 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Samples\Analysis Services\Programmability\AMO\AMOAdventureWorks\CS\StoredProcedures\obj\Debug\StoredProcedures.dll' This is likely due to a missing strong key pair value file. The easiest way to solve this problem is to create a new one. Navigate to:  Microsoft Visual Studio 2010>Visual Studio Tools>Visual Studio x64 Win64 Command Prompt (2010)  [if you aren't on an x64 box, pick another command prompt option that fits] Once the MS-Dos window displays, type in this statement: sn -k c:\SampleKey.snk Then copy the output *.snk file to project directory, or the *referenced directory. Remove the old reference to the *.snk file from the project. Add the paired key back to the project as an existing item. When you add back the *.snk file to the project, you will see that the *.snk file is no longer missing.   Our work is done!   *referenced directory: Pay attention to the original error message on compile. The *.snk file that is referenced may be in a directory path you aren't expecting--so you will still get the error unless you change the directory path or write the file to the directory the program is expecting to find the *.snk file.

  • Problem with shared ssh keys

    Following the process I've used in other environments (http://www.trilug.org/pipermail/trilug/Week-of-Mon-20080602/054712.html), I've tried setting-up shared keys between my Mac and my CentOS 4 webserver. I've seen the same problem with my older Ubuntu 7.10 workstation trying to connect via keys to the same webserver. I have tried both dsa and rsa keytypes (sshkeygen -t <type>). The sshd_config file on my webserver seems to be allowing key-based logins: RSAAuthentication yes PubkeyAuthentication yes AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys And my .ssh/authorized_keys has my dsa and rsa keys added. Where should I be looking for what to change next to make key-based logins "Just Work™"? Is it related to the line #UseDNS yes and sshd is trying to do a reverse-lookup on my IP, but cannot because it's NAT'd?

  • How do I use an include statement in a TXT record?

    We have a client that is using an email service that requires a TXT domain key reocrd that is over 127 characters long. I'm pretty sure BIND allows this, however we run djbdns with tinydns and it looks as though it only supports txt records up to 127 characters. And the rest is being truncated. I was thinking I can do an include combining them, but I'm not really sure how. I was thinking of setting the value to somthing like... v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQC2GWCNaDTuC3include:bdk2._domainkey.mail.cutlerymania.com My thought is, will this grab the actual value located at that domain which only has one record which is a TXT record and simply append that information so the entire key record gets sent correctly?

  • MySQL Replication Error

    I recently updated my master server to 5.1.41 and noticed that the slave was no longer replicating. It was returning this erorr: 091208 12:53:31 [ERROR] Slave I/O: error connecting to master '[email protected]:3306' - retry-time: 10 retries: 86400, Error_code: 2026 091208 12:53:41 [ERROR] Slave I/O: error connecting to master '[email protected]:3306' - retry-time: 10 retries: 86400, Error_code: 1045 The first error is apparently an SSL error, followed by auth denied.. Thing is, I haven't touched my SSL key or user access in months (and the key is fine, since I'm using the same one on that machine to replicate from other master servers.. Any ideas? Edit: Months later, I've tried with 5.1.44 and the problem is persisting. When I roll back to 5.1.39 replication works great... I guess I can't use anything newer than 5.1.39....

  • Microsoft Townhall, An Example for Azure and MVC

    Microsoft just released an example named Microsoft Townhall which was built and deployed on Azure. It uses ASP.NET MVC as its webiste framework and the SQL Azure plus LinqToSQL as its the database and the ORM framework. You can download the source code at the MSDN Code Gallery. Basides the Azure it might be more useful to us to learn how they utilized ASP.NET MVC.     We have migrated from SharePoint 2007 to 2010. Everything appears to be working correctly except for an intermitent error with search. Occastionally search results will crash for all of our sites and when we look up the coorliation id we get the following error: Exception when fetching results: System.ServiceModel.FaultException`1[System.ServiceModel.ExceptionDetail]: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.   • Windows 7 installation reboot loop

    Upgrading from Vista home premium to win 7 hoe premium from DVD ex Digital river on gigabyte VM900m; core 2 duo 2.13GHz 2GB ram; Western digital 250GB HD. Got as far as "Expanding Windows files ...100% the error message "Computer encountered unexpected error... To install windows press OK to restart computer and reinstall windows" The computer then reboots, loads Windows 7 (new logo) a essage that says "setup is starting services" then the error message comes back. I can get into BIOS to change boot priority but the computer just ignores this and goes through the same sequence. At the point of "to boot from CD/DVD press any key" my keyboard is deactivated and i cannot make a choice and the sae sequence occurs. I cannot break the sequence - I have push every key, disconnected every external device including HDMI screen, but nothing stops the loop. Any ideas? Auswoolf
