• Slow draw on some apps and dynamic clocks not working properly with ATI/AMD proprietary drivers

  I've recently purchased a new computer (around July 2010) and I've been having some problems with proprietary video drivers on Linux. The hardware is: Video: ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5870 (XFX HD-587X-ZNFC); Motherboard: Asus P7P55D-E Deluxe; Processor: Intel i5 750; Memory: Kingston Hyperx KHX1600C8D3K2/4GX (2x - 8GB Total); Power Supply: XFX P1-750B-CAG9; There are no overclocks, not even the memories (they are at 1333mhz due processor memory controller limitation). The operational system is a homebrew Linux distribution with the following software: Architecture: x86_64 (multilib) Kernel: 2.6.35.10 Xorg: 7.5 Window Manager: wmii-3.9.2 Video Driver: ATI/AMD Catalyst 10.12 There are no desktop effects programs like compiz fusion or beryl. The problems: With ATI/AMD proprietary driver, some applications are with slow draw/redraw, and, the same applications make the driver to increase the card clocks to maximum (0% gpu activity, only the clocks are increased). I dunno exactly how to describe the slow draw but I'll list some applications and symptoms. xterm Flickers a lot when drawing continuous output; When I'm in a workspace with fullscreen xterm, The gpu load stays at 12% in idle, and, with smaller xterm, smaller GPU load. "aticonfig --odgc" output: Default Adapter - ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 157 300 Current Peak : 850 1200 Configurable Peak Range : [600-900] [900-1300] GPU load : 12% "aticonfig --pplib-cmd 'get activity'" output: Current Activity is Core Clock: 157MHZ Memory Clock: 300MHZ VDDC: 950 Activity: 12 percent Performance Level: 0 Bus Speed: 5000 Bus Lanes: 16 Maximum Bus Lanes: 16 More examples: mplayer time info flickers on terminal; "find /" flickers a lot (It takes some time to stop with control-c. But, If I change the workspace or put some window upon it, just after the control-c, it stops instantly); "cat somefile" if the file is big (Xorg.0.log for example) it takes some time to display; vim and less (ex: find / | less) don't have much problems, just a little flicker when scrolling; mplayer (no gui) Slow reproduction and seek with -vo x11; Tearing with -vo xv; Time info flickers on terminal (xterm consequence); gvim A little slow draw when scrolling with page up/page down; Firefox Slow draw/redraw on some pages like www.boadica.com.br and sometimes on www.youtube.com with flash enable (never noticed on many pages); Corruptions when informative yellow boxes are showing and scroll the page (an gray box appears at the same place of the informative box); "Wallpaper" After minimizing a fullscreen window or changing to an empty workspace it takes some time to redraw wallpaper. "Video Card" The core and memory clocks are increased with the events described above and on other situations like change workspace (even without wallpaper), minimize, maximize or move a window; Idle clocks: Core: 157mhz, Memory: 300mhz Full clocks: Core: 850mhz, Memory: 1200mhz xpdf Painful slow scrolling; display (from ImageMagick) Slow menus and sometimes slow image redraw; Programs that I use and are apparently without problems: gimp; pidgin; mplayer (-vo gl, gl2); blender; unigine heaven (better fps than on Windows); doom3; tibia; penumbra overture; amnesia the dark descent (wine); diablo 2 (wine); No problems on Windows (Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit). And special note to this: Full desktop effects from Debian and Ubuntu gnome appearance cpanel don't cause ANY problems, even the core and memory clocks don't increase when change workspace, minimize, maximize or move a window. What I've tested: Unsuccessful tests: Tested all drivers versions since 10.6 (released approximately when I've installed the first slackware in this PC); Tested other video card - ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5570 (XFX HD-557X-ZHF2); Tested some options on xorg.conf and that I've found googling (some of these options are commented on my xorg.conf. I'll send the links at the end of post); Tested some patches like 107_fedora_dont_fill_bg_none.patch and xserver-xorg-backclear.patch from Arch Linux Catalyst page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Catalyst); Tested other distros and software versions: Tested XORG-7.6 on my own distribution; Tested Debian Squeeze (testing - from 2010-12-20); Tested Ubuntu Marverick (10.10); Tested Slackware 13.1; Distros info: Architecture: i386 Debian and Ubuntu with all default software (kernel, gnome, xorg, drivers); Slackware with Catalyst from AMD page and default window managers like: fvwm, xfce, and my own build of wmii; Successful tests: Tested other video card (only on my homebrew distro) - NVIDIA Geforce 7300GS with driver 260.19.29; That didn't shown the slow draw problems, but that card is a bit obsolete, so, dunno if that lacks features like the dynamic clocks. I don't dispose of other video cards like nvidia g/gt/gts/gtx 200~400~500 or Radeon HD 3000/4000/6000 to make more tests. Tested other hardware: Video: ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5570 (XFX HD-557X-ZHF2); Motherboard: Intel DG31PR; Processor: Core 2 Duo E6750; Software for that hardware: Fresh install of same distros (except for the mine) with same program versions; That video card (HD 5570) were full time at the maximum clocks (something like 500/750, don't remember) in all the operational systems (Windows XP and Windows 7 too), but it didn't shown the same problems that I have here. I've googled a lot about common problems with ATI/AMD proprietary drivers for Linux and didn't find similar problems, except by the Firefox corruptions, that the solutions were to disable ATI Direct2DAccel and use XAA. With XAA the problems persists and the other applications like pidgin and rest of Firefox showed the same problems of slow draw/redraw. Open source Drivers: With open source drivers (xf86-video-ati-6.13.2) I hadn't the same slow draw problems, but, had other problems, that, for now, make it no viable solution. I'll not discuss it here because this is another line of problems and will confuse everything. If it happens to be the only solution, I'll make another thread to discuss it. • GUI Design - Roleselection with two lists, selected roles on the right, or left list?

  Hi, image two lists for selecting roles for a new user creation in an administrator frontend. One list has all available roles in it and another has the selected roles in it. Between those lists are buttons to move elements from one list to another. Thus the layout is horizontal with [List] [Buttons] [List]. Now to the question: Should the selected elements be on the left, or the right list? Intuitively some people I asked say, that the selected elements have to be on the right list. But some other people follow some sort of guideline that says, that the more important stuff in a frontend has to be on the left side. Also they think the selected elements are more important than the non-selected and so the selected ones have to be on the left side. Whats your opinion?

• Hibernate - moving annotations from property (method) level to field level

  How do I generate hibernate domain classes from tables with annotations at field level? I used Hibernate Tools project and generated domain classes from the tables in the database. The generated classes have annotations on the getter methods rather than at the field level. Kindly advice a way to generate domain classes that have the fields annotated. Is there any refactoring facility available in eclipse/IDEA etc.. to move the annotations from method level to field level? Appreciate your help and time.

• Implementing a configurable factory

  I'm having difficulties finding out how to implement a 'configurable' behavior in a factory class in PHP. I've got at class, which takes another class as an argument in its constructor. The argument class could take a number of arguments in its constructor. An instance of my main class could look something like this $instance = new MyClass(new OtherClass(20, true)); $instance2 = new MyClass(new DifferentClass('test')); This is rather clumsy and has a number of problems and therefore I would like to move this into a factory class. The problem is that this factory somehow needs to know how to instantiate the argument class, as this class can have any number of arguments in the constructor. Preferably I would like to be able to do something like this $instance = Factory::build('OtherClass'); $instance2 = Factory::build('DifferentClass'); And let the factory retrieve the arguments from a configuration array or similar. Is there a proper solution to this problem?

• What stage of normalization is this? (moving repeating data into separate table)

  Hi There, I have noticed that when designing a database I tend to shift any repeating sets of data into a separate table. For example, say I had a table of people, with each person living in a state. I would then move these repeating states into a separate table and reference them with foreign keys. However, what if I was not storing any more data about states. I would then have a table with StateID and State in. Is this action correct? State is dependant on the primary key of the users table, so does shifting it into its own table help with anything? Thanks,

• How do I maintain formatting of comments when I save them to the database in an asp.net mvc applicat

  The title was probably not very clear. Consider this scnerio: you have a blog site or really just any site where a user can respond via a comment. You want to maintain the formatting for the comments. So paragraph's should be separated, first sentence indented, bolding of keywords allowed, etc. How would one go about doing this? This is something just about every kind of blogging site handles, including this site. My initial guess is that comments are saved to that database either in an xml format or as the raw html. Those are really my only guesses. I suppose magic strings could be used to denote the starting and ending of various formatting as well, but magic strings are generally frowned upon. I'm doing this in an asp.net mvc application. I'm using version 1 of mvc, but I would be willing to move to 2 if that makes for an easy solution here.

• Next step for Python app using Sqlite db

  I want to write a db program in Python using Sqlite. I have the db table structure planned, and am ready to move to the next step, which I think is to work any bugs out of the db structure. I am totally inexperienced in development except for writing the original db (written in MS Access), and an Intro to C++ class (OOP concepts and console C++ programs). • Silverlight Navigation - how to override Back button behavior

  I'm trying to override the default behavior of the browser's back button in Silverlight (v4). Each of my XAML pages has an ability to show options. I want these options to be hidden when the user presses the back button, or to move to the previous page if the options are not visible. The Silverlight Frame seems to set back and forward points whenever the user navigates to a page with a new QueryString. Is there any other way of implementing my scenario other than having to implement a querystring component for my ShowOptions property?

  I have several .tpl.php files for nodes, CCK fields, and Views theming. These template files have a lot of logic in them to move things around, strip links, create new links, etc. I understand that this is bad development and not "The Drupal Way". If I understand correctly, "The Drupal Way" is to use preprocessor functions in your template.php file to manipulate variables and add new variables. A few questions about that: Is there a naming convention for creating a preprocessor function for a specific theme? For example, if I have a CCK field template called content-field-field_transmission_make_model.tpl, how would I name the preprocessor function? Can I use template preprocessor functions for node templates, CCK field templates, and Views templates? Do they have different methods of modifying template variables or adding new ones?

• Using Java server-side with PHP-generated front-end

  Hi!  Does anyone have a real-world experience in building such a project? I'd like to move away questions about "is it good idea or not", but focus on possible solutions. I see one simple way - HTTP GET/POST + xml/json - and one more elegant - AJAX/DWR. As for the first one - I understand that it is possible, but needs quite a lot coding. As for second way - is it possible to use Java DWR engine with PHP front-end? Is DWR language-independent for client side (as it uses just JavaScript)?  Would it be a problem, that client page was generated by one web server (for example, apache+php) and served on server-side by another (for example, tomcat)? I suspect, that Tomcat will complain about sessions. Can this problem be fixed with allowing cross-domain AJAX? Thank you in advance. Denis.

Does anybody know how this is done?

• What's the best way to change the namespace of a highly referenced class?

  I am attempting to move a highly referenced class from one namespace to another. Simply moving the file into the new project which has a different root namespace results in over 1100 errors throughout my solution. Some references to the class involve fully qualified namescape referencing and others involve the importing of the namespace. I have tried using a refactoring tool (Refactor Pro) to rename the namespace, in the hope all references to the class would change, but this resulted in the aforementioned problem. Anyone have ideas of how to tackle this challenge without needing to drill into every file manually and changing the fully qualified namespace or importing the new one if it doesn't exist already? • UI not redrawing after display powered off on Win 7

  Some portions of my application's interface are not getting refreshed after Windows 7 powers down the display. More specifically, I'm swapping out images, User Controls, and a button's content while the display is powered off and after it has been restarted, and this isn't being reflected in the UI until I minimize and restore the window or move it to one of the screen's edges. I've tried calling the Window's InvalidateVisual() method when the app was in a state where it needed to redraw, and that didn't solve the problem. I have only been able to reproduce this issue on Windows 7. Any ideas?

• Graphics/Bitmap Limits?

  Im having some weird problems with Graphics and Bitmap. I have a Graphics Object that is displayed on a PictureBox and im capturing the MouseMove and MouseClick Events that give X and Y Position of the Mouse on the Image but if the Y Position goes Bigger then 32775 it then goes into Negatives which means everything breaks. And if the Image is Bigger then 65535 it then stops displaying the Image. Any Ideas how these problems can be fixed? • Caching generated QR Code

  I use zxing to encode a qr code and store it as a bitmap and then show it in ImageView. Since the image generation time is significant I'm planning to move it to a separate thread (AsyncTaskLoader will be fine I think). The problem is - it's an image and I know that to avoid memory leaks one should never store a strong reference to it in an Activity. So how would you do it? How to cache an image to survive config changes (phone rotation) and generally avoid generating it onCreate()? Just point me in the right direction, please.

• Custom jQuery dropdown

  I am creating a custom simple dropdown using jQuery that hides/shows a element based on over state. The problem I have now is that when you go over the shown element it hides, you cant move your mouse in to the dropdown that was created. Any thoughts on how to fix that also, is there an easier way to do what I have? • Segmentation Fault when using "mov" in Assembly

  I am working on a simple assembly program for a class, and am encountering an odd segmentation fault. It's a pretty simple program to convert bytes into kilobytes. However, within the function that does the conversion, I get a segmentation fault when I try to move the value 1024 into the ebx register. I've never had this kind of problem before when working with registers. Does someone know what could be causing this? I imagine it is something simple that I'm overlooking. Both the examples host visual studio's windows forms designer to provide form-design service in their respective applications. My question is - Does it imply any licensing issue with Microsoft for directly hosting their Visual Studio Forms designer in my own application ? Can anybody here help me out if there's any licensing issues in case I want to host visual studio windows fomr designer in my own application. If there's any such licensing implication - then how does Sharp-Develop do this ?

• JavaScript: Change to Absolute Positioning

  I'm trying to center a page on any resolution while still being able to use absolute positioning to move pictures. I figure that the best way would be to have a table positioned relatively in the beginning in the center of the page, then change it to absolute positioning in the onload of the page. I think the correct line is: document.getElementById("Object").style.position = "absolute"; However, I put an alert box after it asking where the left side of the object is, I get undefined. But, if I directly assign it to a position (Object.style.left = 500) I will get that number. So I can assign it a value, meaning it is in absolute position, but I cannot pull a value out of that. Kind of confusing but hopefully it makes sense and someone knows what to do. Thanks.

  Hi I have worked on the following nav drop down seen here http://charmcitykids.missionmedia.net/. It works and is almost complete, but I have one issue. When you mouseover a nav title the text goes from color to black and then shows the dropdown. That is how it should work, but when you move your mouse to go a nav title within the dropdown the black text(active image) goes back to color and doesnt remain black. Any suggestion when dropdown is active and user is navigating through such to keep the text(active image) black? thnx jonah

  Following the feedback i got from: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2683682/new-to-linux-kernel-driver-development/2683819 I have written a driver (.c file) by comparing it with an existing driver and "borrowing" heavily from its code. The driver is registered fine and init() and probe() are working fine. I am also able to access the peripheral device registers. :-) However i am a bit hazy about the IRQ/ISR. The peripheral-device is a input device and raises an interrupt on a GPIO pin. How do i move ahead from my current state ( init(), probe(), etc. ) to be able to handle the IRQ and execute my ISR function?? Many-Thanks in Advance

  Hey guys, For our webapp testing environment we're currently using watin with a bunch of unit tests, and we're looking to move to selenium and use more frameworks. We're currently looking at Selenium2 + Gallio + Xunit.net, However one of the things we're really looking to get around is compiled testcases. Ideally we want testcases that can be edited in VS with intellisense, but don't require re-compilling the assembly every single time we make a small change, Are there any frameworks likely to help with this issue? Are there any nice UI tools to help manage massive ammount of testcases? Ideally we want the testcase writing process to be simple so that more testers can aid in writing them. cheers

• How entity edit URL from within plug-in in MS Dyanmics CRM 4.0

  I would like to have a workflow create a task, then email the assigned user that they have a new task and include a link to the newly created task in the body of the email. I have client side code that will correctly create the edit URL, using the entities GUID and stores it in a custom attribute. However, when the task is created from within a workflow, the client script isn't run. So, I think a plug-in should work, but I can't figure out how to determine the URL of the CRM installation. I'm authoring this in a test environment and definitely don't want to have to change things when I move to production. I'm sure I could use a config file, but seems like the plug-in should be able to figure this out at runtime. Anyone have any ideas how to access the URL of the crm service from within a plug-in? Any other ideas? Thanks!

  I have sorted list of strings that I move between php and java. to be able to bsearch on this data, I need the same comparison function. any idea what string compare functions I can use that will always give the same result in both? eg php's strcmp() vs java's String.compareTo() yes I know I could make my own string compare that does char by char carefully, but I was hoping there's a simple answer. PS, don't care if case sensitive or not, as long as it is consistant.
