  I am looking for a source of nouns, adverbs, adjectives, and verbs in several languages. I'd like the lists to already be split apart, and not have to go through the OED (and non-English equivalents) by hand re-creating said lists. I don't really care about definitions, and I understand some words can be multiple parts of speech - that's fine - words like "many" could be a noun or adjective, and can appear in both lists. Does anyone here know of such a source? If not, might someone be able to point me in the right direction?

• Is there a modified LGPL license that allows static linking?

However in some cases, this can pose considerable difficulties. In particular, Haskell programs are almost always statically compiled. (Also I'd be interested to know if are there some unforeseen consequences of such a modification of LGPL.)

• Is Zscalar's HTTPS Everywhere for IE affiliated with EFF?

  The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a tool called HTTPS Everywhere for Firefox, Chrome and Opera. But they don't list Internet Explorer. There is a company called Zscalar that provides HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer. I can't determine if the EFF approves of Zscalar's IE extension, or if the company hijacked the EFF tool's name. The only mention of Zscalar on the EFF website is the HTTPS Everywhere Atlas. The closest I can find from Zscalar are link backs on the Zscalar website and a Zscalar PDF that points back to the EFF website. The EFF tool is free, open source and can be audited, but I don't see similar governance for Zscalar's tool. For example, I don't see mention of source code at HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer. And it looks like there's a "Free Trial" for HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer (see the link on the right). Is Zscalar's HTTPS Everywhere for IE affiliated with EFF?

• Bad style programming, am I pretending too much?

  I realized to work in an office with a quite bad code base. The base library implemented in years and years is quite limited, and most of that code is, honestly, horrible. Projects developed in the office are very large. Fine. I could define me a "perfectionist" (but often I'm not), and I thought to refactor an application (really a portion), which need a new (complex) feature. But, today, I really realized that it's not possible to refactor that application modules with a reasonable time (say, 24/26 hours, respect the avaialable time for the task, which is 160 hours). I'm talking about (I am a bit ashamed to say) name collisions, large and frequent cut & paste code, horrible and misleading naming, makefiles without dependencies (!), application login is spread randomly across many different sources, dead code, variable aliasing, no assertion, no documentation, very long source files, bad/incomplete include file definition, (this is emblematic!) very frequent extern declaration of variables and functions, ... I'm sure to continue ... buffer overflows because sprintf, indentation (!), spacing, non existent const modifier usage. I would say that every source line was written quite randomly when needed, without keeping in mind some design (at least, the obvious one). (Am I in hell?) The problem arises when the application is developed by a colleague of mine. I felt very frustrated. So, I decided to expose the "situation" to my colleague; at the end, that was a bad idea. He is justified in saying that "the application was developed in haste, so it is natural that it is written vaguely; you are wasting time to think and implement an elegant implementation" .... I'm asking too much from my colleague to write readable code, which is managed and documented? I expect too much in not having to read thousands of lines of code to understand how a particular logic?

• Windows 7 / Media Center lock problem

  Hi, we have a Win7 with Media Center that is connected to a large screen. It displays a corporate slideshow near the coffeemachine. When the computer is started it automatically logs in and starts the slideshow. The problem is that on irregular time intervals (once a day, some days not) the slideshow stops and it switches to the login screen and shows which user is logged on. We don't know why this is happening. We first thought someone on the network was trying to open RDC connection to the machine, because it is the same sympthon like when you take over a machine by RDC with a different user, but nobody is doing that. Screensaver is disabled, energy settings "always on" Anybody ideas why this is happening?

• Worth it to move /var to physical disk vs logical?

  Brief question about partition layout. I use an SSD for /, /boot, /usr, & /home partitions. I'd like to move /var to a mechanical disk to minimize writes to the SSD. I'm mainly concerned about maximizing drive life rather than maximizing performance (although I obviously wouldn't want to cripple my server). My mechanical disks consist of two drives sharing LVM, and a third used for nightly rsync backups. I also have a bunch of old 2.5in hard disks lying around. My question is, should I simply create a new LVM volume '/var' on my primary data store, or would it be worth the increased energy consumption (in terms of maximizing the lifetime of the LVMed drives) to install a low volume 2.5in disk to use just for /var? On a more general level my question is about the trade offs of placing OS mounts on the same physical volumes as my data. Thanks for any help!

• Can't reinstall VLC

  I use VLC a lot. And when 2.0 came out Ubuntu did not update to that version, the REPO had the older version even months later, So I added the daily repo: http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu and that worked for a while, after a few months later I received a 'Distribution upgrade' and when I installed it, it removed VLC. when I tried to re-install it gave me a bunch of unmet dependency's, so I disabled the source, ran apt-get update, and tried to install the older VLC, that did not work either.   Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am working on a project that will be released as open source in the latter part of the year. I am starting to think about how the accompanying website will be hosted and would greatly appreciate some advice. Requirements: Domain #1 Information about the project itself (just pages and pictures). Documentation / Wiki Forums Download of project source (approx 3MB archive) Download of various themes and community contributed content (est. sizes 10KB ~ 512KB). Domain #2 Primary company website that offers products and services. This will be primarily pictures and pages. What kind of web hosting would be best for a project like this. I am working on a very tight budget and can only afford to spend up to £250 per year for hosting this. I was considering using some sort of VPS hosting. • Getting error when using Oracle imp command to import dmp file

  I am importing a dmp file using the following command: imp user/pass file=file.dmp log=logfile.log full=y ignore=y destroy=y I get the following errors: . . importing table "MESSAGE_BOARD" IMP-00058: ORACLE error 22993 encountered ORA-22993: specified input amount is greater than actual source amount IMP-00028: partial import of previous table rolled back: 219638 rows rolled back . . importing table "MESSAGE_BOARD_ARCHIVES" IMP-00058: ORACLE error 22993 encountered ORA-22993: specified input amount is greater than actual source amount IMP-00028: partial import of previous table rolled back: 2477960 rows rolled back I have tried increasing the tablespace size and adding a second datafile to no avail.   Hey, I am trying to setup Link Aggrigation with LACP (well, anything that provides increased bandwidth and failover using my setup will work). I'm running FreeBSD 8.0 on 3 machines. M1 is running 2 10/100 ethernetcards setup for link aggrigation using lagg. for reference: ifconfig em0 up ifconfig tx0 up ifconfig create lagg0 ifconfig lagg0 laggproto lacp laggport tx0 laggport em0 192.168.1.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 I plugged them into ports 1 and 2 of a Cicso 3550. then ran: configure terminal interface range Fa0/1 - 2 switchport mode access switchport access vlan 1 channel-group 1 mode active (everythings in vlan 1) Now Im able to connect the other computers to other ports on the switch and failover works great, i can unplug cables in the middle of a transfer and the traffic gets rerouted. However, im not noticing any speed increase. My test setup: load balancing: i tried dst and src on the switch, neither seemed to give me a speed increase. I am SCPing 2 500 meg files from the lagg computer to other computers (one each) which are also running 10/100 full duplex cards. I get transfer speeds of about 11.2-11.4 Mbps to a single host, and about half that (5.9-6.2) Mbps when transferring to both at the same time. From what I understood with destination load balancing the router was suppose to balance traffic headed for 1 computer over 1 port and traffic headed for another over a diff(in this case) the other port. With destination-MAC address forwarding, when packets are forwarded to an EtherChannel, the packets are distributed across the ports in the channel based on the destination host MAC address of the incoming packet. Therefore, packets to the same destination are forwarded over the same port, and packets to a different destination are sent on a different port in the channel. For the 3550 series switch, when source-MAC address forwarding is used, load distribution based on the source and destination IP address is also enabled for routed IP traffic. All routed IP traffic chooses a port based on the source and destination IP address. Packets between two IP hosts always use the same port in the channel, and traffic between any other pair of hosts can use a different port in the channel.   Intro This is the first in a series of small articles about what is new in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4. The series is build around a open source demo application SilverAmp which is available on http://SilverAmp.CodePlex.com.   MVVM Project and Item Templates Expression Blend has got a new project template to get started with a Model-View-ViewModel project  easily. The template provides you with a View and a ViewModel bound together. It also adds the ViewModel to the SampleData of your project. It is available for both Silverlight and Wpf. To get going, start a new project in Expression Blend and select Silverlight DataBound Application from the Silverlight project type. In this case I named the project DemoTest1. The solution now contains several folders: SampleData; which contains a data to show in Blend ViewModels; starts with one file, MainViewModel.cs Views; containing MainView.xaml with codebehind used for binding with the MainViewModel class. and your regular App.xaml and MainPage.xaml The MainViewModel class contains a sample property and a sample method. Both the property and the method are used in the MainView control. The MainView control is a regular UserControl and is placed in the MainPage. You can continue on building your applicaition by adding your own properties and methods to the ViewModel and adding controls to the View. Adding Views with ViewModels is very easy too. The guys at Microsoft where nice enough to add a new Item template too: a UserControl with ViewModel. If you add this new item to the root of your solution it will add the .xaml file to the views folder and a .cs file to the ViewModels folder. Conclusion The databound Application project type is a great to get your MVVM based project started. Architecture The following figure represents a high-level overview of the system's desired features: The most basic usage would be as follows: The user visits a web site. The system presents a map (having regions, cities, and buildings). The user drills-down on the map to a particular building. The system provides a basic CRUD interface. The user can view and modify information about personnel (e.g., their assigned teams), equipment (e.g., network appliances), applications, and the building itself (e.g., contact and phone numbers). Ideally, all the components should be open-source (or otherwise free). Problem This must be a small project that needs a quick (but functional) prototype, mostly to confirm whether or not such a system would be useful in the long term. Questions What software components would you use to quickly develop a working prototype? What open-source solutions already exist, if any? • How to Install Python 2.6 on Fedora 8?

  I don't want to use Fedora 8. I would be very happy to use the newest version, but there is no choice. My problem is that 8 comes with python 2.5. I am trying to upgrade it to 2.6, but with no luck. The only caveat is that I don't want to just install directly from source. I want to do it through the package manager using an rpm. I have tried building my own rpm from source using rpmbuild. I have tried using src rpms from newer versions of Fedora. I've tried these CentOS instructions. Nothing seems to actually result in an rpm file that installs successfully. I have also tried extensive Google searching, and have been unsurprisingly unable to find any rpms that work, or working instructions to build my own rpm.

  My ‘jump in and sink or swim’ learning style leads me to create dozens of unbillable ‘play’ projects in Visual Studio 2012.  For example, I’m currently learning to customize the powerful auction/fixed price/classifieds software called AuctionWorx Enterprise.  I make stupid mistakes as I grasp a new API and configure projects. It’s frustrating to go down a rat hole and discover the VS IDE’s Undo doesn’t reach back to a working build from the previous weekend. Enter Visual Studio’s Free Team Foundation Service.  Put your play projects into the free source control and check in (or shelve) a snapshot before embarking on something risky. (I already use Discount ASP.NET’s Team Foundation Server hosting for client projects so there’s zero TFS/VS learning curve for me and first class GUI support.) TFS is free right now for teams of five or fewer. I’m not naive enough to expect ‘free’ to last forever. So, it’ll be interesting to see how much Microsoft intends to charge in 2013 for TFS. In the meantime, why not grab some free source code storage? BTW, it’s weird to realize that Microsoft is backing up my junky little playtime code on three physically-distinct servers every day - and taking incremental backups every hour.

• BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Receive Location

  I have previously talked about the installation of the Community ODBC adapter and also using the ODBC adapter to generate schemas.  But what about creating a receive location? An ODBC receive location will periodically poll the configured database using the stored procedure or SQL string defined in your request schema. If you need to, begin by adding a new receive port to your BizTalk configuration. Create a new receive location and select to use the ODBC adapter and click Address. You will now be shown the ODBC Community Adapter Transport properties window.  Select connection string and you will be shown the Choose data Source window.  If you have already created the Test Database source when generating a schema from ODBC this will be shown (if not go and take a look in my previous post to see how this is done).   You will then need to choose the SQL command that will be run by the recieve port.  In this case I have deployed the Test Mapping schemas that I created previously and selected the Request schema. You should now have populated the appropriate properties for the ODBC Com Adapter. Finally set the standard receive location properties and your ODBC receive location is now ready.
