• What's going on with INETA and the Regional Speakers Bureau?

  For those of you that have been waiting patiently (and not so patiently) I'm happy to say that we're very near completion on some changes/enhancements/improvements that will allow us to finally go live with the INETA Regional Speakers Bureau. I know quite a few of you have already registered, which is great (though some of you may need to come back and update your info) and we've had a few folks submit requests, mostly in a test capacity, but soon we'll be up and live. Here's how it breaks down. Be sure to read this, because things have changed a bit from when we initially announced it. 1. The majority of our speaker/event funding is going into the Regional Speakers Bureau.  The National Bureau still exists, but it's a good bit smaller than it was before, and it's not an "every group" benefit anymore. We'll be using the National Bureau as more of a strategic task force, targeting high impact events and areas that need some community building love from INETA. These will be identified and handled on a case by case basis, and may include more than just user group events. 2. You're going to get more events per group, per year than you did before. Not only are we focusing more resources on this program, but we're also making a lot of efforts to use it more effectively. With the INETA Regional Speakers Bureau, you should be able to get 2-3 INETA speakers per year, on average. Not every geographical area will have exactly the same experience, but we're doing the best we can. 3. It's not a farm team program for the National Bureau. Unsurprisingly, I managed to offend a number of people when I previously made the comment that the Regional Speakers Bureau program was a farm team or stepping stone to the National Bureau. It was a poor choice of words.  Anyone can participate in the Regional Speakers Bureau, and I look forward to working with all of you. 4. There is assistance for your efforts. The exact final details are still being hammered out, but expect it to look something like this: (all distances listed are based on a round trip) Distances < 120 miles = $0 121 miles - 240 miles = $50 (effectively 1 to 2 hours, each way) 241 miles - 360 miles = $100 (effectively 2 to 3 hours, each way) 361 miles - 480 miles = $200 (effectively 3 to 4 hours, each way) For those of you who travel a lot, we're working on a solution to handle group visits when you're away from home. These will (for now) be handled on a case by case basis. 5. We're going to make it as easy as possible to work with the program. In order to do this, we need a few things from you. For speakers, that means your home address. It also means (maybe) filling out a simple 1 line expense report via the INETA website. For user groups, it means making sure your meeting address is up to date as well. 6. Distances will be automatically calculated from your home of record to the user group event and back. We realize that this is not a perfect solution to every instance, but we're not paying you to speak at an event, and you won't be taxed on this money. It's simply some assistance to make your community efforts easier. Our way of saying thanks for everything you do. 7. Sounds good so far, what's the catch? There's always a catch, right? In this case there are two of them: 1) At this time, Microsoft employees are welcome to use the website to line up speaking engagements with user groups, but are not eligible for financial assistance. 2) Anyone can register and use the website to line up speaking engagements with user groups, however you must receive and maintain a net score of 3+ positive ratings (we're implementing a thumbs up / thumbs down system) in order to receive financial assistance. These ratings are provided by the User Group leaders after the meeting has taken place. 8. Involvement by the User Group leaders is a key factor in the success of this program. Your job isn't done once you request a speaker. After you've had your meeting, it's critical that you go back to the website and take a very small survey. Doing this ensures that the speaker gets rated (and compensated if eligible) and also ensures that you can make another request, since you won't be able to make a new request if you have an old one outstanding. 9. What about Canada? We're definitely working on that. Unfortunately nothing new to report on that front, other than to say that we're trying. So... this is where things stand currently. We're working very quickly to get this in place and get speakers and groups together. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below and I'll answer them as quickly as possible. • Which comes first DNS or name servers?

  Which comes first? DNS or nameservers? Its just I'm editing a domain and want to point it to different hosting servers. Now, normally I'd just set the nameservers to the new hosting nameservers, but this doesn't seem to be working (the control panels not brilliant - doesn't say "accepted" or "success" - and whois searches are turning up nothing - although I should leave it a while longer). Anyway - the point is, in the DNS records there are two A records (one for " " and one for "www") which have an ip address associated with them. So this is what I don't understand. If I change the nameservers, do I have to remove the DNS records? Will name servers "overwrite" a DNS record? Or vice versa? Thank you.

• How can I associate my main domain to a RSS?

  This is an institutional site which uses Tumblr to keep the visitors updated. The Tumblr is linked via frames in the subdirectory /blog/ of the domain to track stats. My question is: How can I allow my visitors to retrieve the Tumblr updates by simply inputing www.domain.com in their feed reader instead of domain.tumblr.com? OR How can I allow my visitors to retrieve the Tumblr updates by simply inputing www.domain.com/blog in their feed reader instead of domain.tumblr.com? PS. For some reason the main domain is still associated with the old blogspot address.

• Problem with DNS

  Hey, I bought a new website, and the company gived me another free domain name, so when I asked for the socond they created it and they told me to change the DNS to look like the first one. It's been a week waiting for it to propagate, today when I type the url I got this error message : If you are the web site owner, it is possible you have reached this page because: * The IP address has changed. * There has been a server misconfiguration. * The site may have been moved to a different server. If you are the owner of this website and were not expecting to see this page, please contact your hosting provider. When I try to add the second domain to my cpanel (Addon domain) I get also another error : The addon domain “abcdef.com” has been created. An account with that login already exists. Do you have any ideas about this problem. Thanks. EDIT I tried to flush the DNS with ipconfig /flushdns, but It's not changing anything.

• How should I update my name server after I installed a new dedicated server?

  Say I got a dedi. The IP is 123.123.123.123 Now I got domain name domainname.com that will be the "main" domain name for that server. Should I? Set the name server of the domainname.com to ns1.domainname.com and ns2.domainname.com Add child nameserver ns1.domainname.com and ns2.domainname.com to point to that exact IP. or Should I? Point the name server to my registrar name server. Set an A address of the name server to point to my IP. Which one is right? Obviously I want ns1.domainname.com and ns2.domainname.com to point to my IP so I can then point hundreds of domains to that IP. But how exactly I should do that? Specifically I simply use cpanel. Centosh with cpanel.

• Implementing an Interceptor Using NHibernate’s Built In Dynamic Proxy Generator

  NHibernate 3.2 came with an included proxy generator, which means there is no longer the need – or the possibility, for that matter – to choose Castle DynamicProxy, LinFu or Spring. This is actually a good thing, because it means one less assembly to deploy. Apparently, this generator was based, at least partially, on LinFu. As there are not many tutorials out there demonstrating it’s usage, here’s one, for demonstrating one of the most requested features: implementing INotifyPropertyChanged. This interceptor, of course, will still feature all of NHibernate’s functionalities that you are used to, such as lazy loading, and such. We will start by implementing an NHibernate interceptor, by inheriting from the base class NHibernate.EmptyInterceptor. • What Will Happen to Real Estate Leases when Operating Leases are Gone?

  Many people are concerned about what will happen to real estate leases when FASB and IASB abolish operating leases. They plan to unveil the proposed standards on treating leases this summer as part of the convergence project but no "finalized ruling" is expected for at least a year because it will need to get formal consensus from many players, such as the SEC, American Association of Investors, Congress, the Big Four, American Associate of Realtors, the international equivalents of these, etc. If your accounting is a bit rusty, an Operating Lease is where you lease equipment or some asset for a shorter period than the actual (expected) life of the asset and then give the asset back while it still has some useful life in it. (Think leasing a car). Because an Operating Lease does not contain any of the provisions that would qualify it as a Capital Lease, the lease is not treated as a sale or purchase and hits the lessee's rental expense and the lessor's revenue. So it all stays on the P&L (assuming no prepayments are made). Capital Leases, on the other hand, hit lessee's and lessor's balance sheets because the asset is treated as a sale. (I'm ignoring interest and depreciation here to emphasize my point). Question: What will happen to real estate leases when Operating Leases go away and how will Oracle Financials address these changes? Before I attempt to address these questions, here's a real-life example to expound on some of the issues: Let's say a U.S. retailer leases a store in a mall for 15 years. Under U.S. GAAP, the lease is considered an operating or expense lease. Will that same lease be considered a capital lease under IFRS? Real estate leases are supposedly going to be capitalized under IFRS. If so, will everyone need to change all leases from operating to capital? Or, could we make some adjustments so we report the lease as an expense for operations reporting but capitalize it for SEC reporting? Would all aspects of the lease be capitalized, or would some line items still be expensed? For example, many retail store leases are defined to include (1) the agreed-to rent amount; (2) a negotiated increase in base rent, e.g., maybe a 5% increase in Year 5; (3) a sales rent component whereby the retailer pays a variable additional amount based on the sales generated in the prior month; (4) parking lot maintenance fees. Would the entire lease be capitalized, or would some portions still be expensed? To help answer these questions, I met up with our resident accounting expert and walking encyclopedia, Seamus Moran. Here's what he had to say: Oracle is aware of the potential changes specific to reporting/capitalization of real estate leases; i.e., we are aware that FASB and IASB have identified real estate leases as one of the areas for standards convergence. Oracle stays apprised of the on-going convergence through our domain expertise staff, our relationship with customers, our market awareness, and, of course, our relationships with the Big 4. This is part of our normal process with respect to regulatory compliance worldwide. At this time, Oracle expects that the standards convergence committee will make a recommendation about reporting standards for real estate leases in about a year. Following typical procedures, we also expect that the recommendation will be up for review for a year, and customers will then need to start reporting to the new standard about a year after that. So that means we would expect the first customer to report under the new standard in maybe 3 years. Typically, after the new standard is finalized and distributed, we find that our customers then begin to evaluate how they plan to meet the new standard. And through groups like the Customer Advisory Boards (CABs), our customers tell us what kind of product changes are needed in order to satisfy their new reporting requirements. Of course, Oracle is also working with the Big 4 and Accenture and other implementers in order to ascertain that these recommended changes will indeed meet new reporting standards. So the best advice we can offer right now is, stay apprised of the standards convergence committee; know that Oracle is also staying abreast of developments; get involved with your CAB so your voice is heard; know that Oracle products continue to be GAAP compliant, and we will continue to maintain that as our standard. But exactly what is that "standard"--we need to wait on the standards convergence committee. In a nut shell, operating leases will become either capital leases or month to month rentals, but it is still too early, too political and too uncertain to call out at this point.

• SPARC M7 Chip - 32 cores - Mind Blowing performance

  The M7 Chip Oracle just announced its Next Generation Processor at the HotChips HC26 conference. As the Tech Lead in our Systems Division's Partner group, I had a front row seat to the extraordinary price performance advantage of Oracle current T5 and M6 based systems. Partner after partner tested  these systems and were impressed with it performance. Just read some of the quotes to see what our partner has been saying about our hardware. We just announced our next generation processor, the M7. This has 32 cores (up from 16-cores in T5 and 12-cores in M6). With 20 nm technology  this is our most advanced processor. The processor has more cores than anything else in the industry today. After the Sun acquisition Oracle has released 5 processors in 4 years and this is the 6th.  The S4 core  The M7 is built using the foundation of the S4 core. This is the next generation core technology. Like its predecessor, the S4 has 8 dynamic threads. It increases the frequency while maintaining the Pipeline depth. Each core has its own fine grain power estimator that keeps the core within its power envelop in 250 nano-sec granularity. Each core also includes Software in Silicon features for Application Acceleration Support. Each core includes features to improve Application Data Integrity, with almost no performance loss. The core also allows using part of the Virtual Address to store meta-data.  User-Level Synchronization Instructions are also part of the S4 core. Each core has 16 KB Instruction and 16 KB Data L1 cache. The Core Clusters  The cores on the M7 chip are organized in sets of 4-core clusters. The core clusters share  L2 cache.  All four cores in the complex share 256 KB of 4 way set associative L2 Instruction Cache, with over 1/2 TB/s of throughput. Two cores share 256 KB of 8 way set associative L2 Data Cache, with over 1/2 TB/s of throughput. With this innovative Core Cluster architecture, the M7 doubles core execution bandwidth. to maximize per-thread performance.  The Chip  Each  M7 chip has 8 sets of these core-clusters. The chip has 64 MB on-chip L3 cache. This L3 caches is shared among all the cores and is partitioned into 8 x 8 MB chunks. Each chunk is  8-way set associative cache. The aggregate bandwidth for the L3 cache on the chip is over 1.6TB/s. Each chip has 4 DDR4 memory controllers and can support upto 16 DDR4 DIMMs, allowing for 2 TB of RAM/chip. The chip also includes 4 internal links of PCIe Gen3 I/O controllers.  Each chip has 7 coherence links, allowing for 8 of these chips to be connected together gluelessly. Also 32 of these chips can be connected in an SMP configuration. A potential system with 32 chips will have 1024 cores and 8192 threads and 64 TB of RAM.  Software in Silicon The M7 chip has many built in Application Accelerators in Silicon. These features will be exposed to our Software partners using the SPARC Accelerator Program.  The M7  has built-in logic to decompress data at the speed of memory access. This means that applications can directly work on compressed data in memory increasing the data access rates. The VA Masking feature allows the use of part of the virtual address to store meta-data.  Realtime Application Data Integrity The Realtime Application Data Integrity feature helps applications safeguard against invalid, stale memory reference and buffer overflows. The first 4-bits if the Pointer can be used to store a version number and this version number is also maintained in the memory & cache lines. When a pointer accesses memory the hardware checks to make sure the two versions match. A SEGV signal is raised when there is a mismatch. This feature can be used by the Database, applications and the OS.  M7 Database In-Memory Query Accelerator The M7 chip also includes a In-Silicon Query Engines.  These accelerate tasks that work on In-Memory Columnar Vectors. Oracle In-Memory options stores data in Column Format. The M7 Query Engine can speed up In-Memory Format Conversion, Value and Range Comparisons and Set Membership lookups. This engine can work on Compressed data - this means not only are we accelerating the query performance but also increasing the memory bandwidth for queries.  SPARC Accelerated Program  At the Hotchips conference we also introduced the SPARC Accelerated Program to provide our partners and third part developers access to all the goodness of the M7's SPARC Application Acceleration features. • Can't find Localhost files

  Hope you can help. This is my first time trying Ubuntu/Linux. I am logged in as root I have downloaded and installed LAMP and PHPMYADMIN. I get the test page under localhost say that It works and is installed Correctly. I have also put my files in the /var/www. they are PHP files When I put the address localhost/(page name.php) I get an error saying Not Found The requested URL /index.php was not found on this server. Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server at localhost Port 80 I Have put the files in the wrong folder?? If I look in the "/etc/ap[ache2/sites-available/default", It tells my my DocumentRoot is /var/www Would love somehelp on this please Many thanks GF

  I am trying to start a program using wine on ubuntu lts 12.04 64 bit When I do this I get the following error message... /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory When I try to symlink the 64 bit libraries, of course I get the following... jackie@jackie-Latitude-E6410:~/tmp/AC$ wine TTG.exe p11-kit: couldn't load module: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address (nil) (thread 0009), starting debugger... err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7bc47aac Is there a package that installs the 32-bit as well as the 64bit? UPDATE: Appears to be a bug in Ubuntu w/ 1.4 https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa I used these steps and my application worked http://www.noobslab.com/2012/04/install-wine-152-on-ubuntu.html Not sure exactly why but it appears to ignore the error if you use the 1.5.

• Google Analytics on Static Site Hosted by GAE

  I finagled hosting a static site on Google App Engine at http://corbyhaas.com The HTML when visiting the URL shows some meta information and a frame to the site's actual address: http://cody-static-sites.appspot.com/corbyhaas which has the content. This is done automagically by Google App Engine. I've set up Google Analytics by including their script in my index.html, but the report shows 100% of visits coming from referring site "corbyhaas.com", which is useless information. Has anyone set up Google Analytics for a static GAE site? Is there a setting in my Analytics dashboard I can tweak, or is this a hazard of using Google App Engine for static content? Also, while it's not relevant here (but could be for future sites), does GAE's method of showing only meta information with frames for static data affect SEO?

• Using IP Restrictions with URL Rewrite-Week 25

  URL Rewrite offers tremendous flexibility for customizing rules to your environment. One area of functionality that is often desired for URL Rewrite is to allow a large list of approved or denied IP addresses and subnet ranges. IIS’s original IP Restrictions is helpful for fully blocking an IP address, but it doesn’t offer the flexibility that URL Rewrite does. An example where URL Rewrite is helpful is where you want to allow only authorized IPs to access staging.yoursite.com, but where staging.yoursite.com is part of the same site as www.yoursite.com. This requires conditional logic for the user’s IP. This lesson covers this unique situation while also introducing Rewrite Maps, server variables, and pairing rules to add more flexibility.   Oracle Advanced Security is an optional licenced Oracle 11g Database add-on.  Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) offers two different features:  column encryption and tablespace encryption.  TDE Tablespace Encryption 11.2.0.1 is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i. What is Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) ? Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) allows you to protect data at rest. TDE helps address privacy and PCI requirements by encrypting personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security numbers and credit card numbers. TDE is completely transparent to existing applications with no triggers, views or other application changes required. Data is transparently encrypted when written to disk and transparently decrypted after an application user has successfully authenticated and passed all authorization checks. Authorization checks include verifying the user has the necessary select and update privileges on the application table and checking Database Vault, Label Security and Virtual Private Database enforcement policies.

• SEO consequences for merging country sites in a .com

  I am in the process of refactoring a number of rental portals I've built for a company with locations in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Instead of the current setting of each country site running under its own domain name: www.companyname.de www.companyname.ch www.companyname.at I would love to merge them all in this way: www.companyname.com/de www.companyname.com/ch www.companyname.com/at with the country TLDs doing a 301 redirect to the respective .com address. However, I have been repeatedly told not to do this due to likely problems with SEO - the business is very SEO dependent, and being a rental chain, needs to be strong in local results. So the question is: Is there an unavoidable hit in Search Engine Optimization when redirecting to a central .com domain? What measures can be taken to soften the blow? What comes to my mind is explicitly specifying a lang attribute in the html tag. Are there any other ways to specifically point out geographical location for sub-directories?

• Port listening on localhost:8000 but not on ip:8000

  Hello I'm running a web application on port 8000. When I access it from the host server localhost:8000 it responds ok, 127.0.0.1:8000 also works, but 192.168.1.7:8000 does not work. 192.168.1.7 is the ip of my server. Also if i try to go to another web application running on port 80 it works 192.168.1.7 I enabled ufw firewall and set ufw default allow. I am using ubuntu server 12.04 Any suggestions on why I can't get to my app on port 8000 using the ip-address:8000? Thanks in advance!

• Mounting with Nautilus works but fstab gives "Host is down" error?

  I'm connecting to my university's VPN so I can connect to the network drive. The VPN seems to be working fine and I can connect to the drive by typing the address into Nautilus and entering my login details: smb://139.___.___.140/home However, this fstab entry doesn't work: //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ cifs domain=CS,username==___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai 0 0 Nor does manually mounting it: sudo mount -t cifs //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ -o domain=CS,username=___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai,user The only error it gives is: mount error(112): Host is down Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) It's obvious the host isn't down since I can view the share from Nautilus. Why is Nautilus mounting it fine but not the normal mount command? What could cause this error?

• AFP and SAMBA shares are confusing my MacOS X Lion

  I've setup my file server running ubuntu 12.04 with AFP/Avahi and Samba shares. Simple configuration, nothing too complicated. I've given my AFP machine a different name than %h to avoid confusion when looking into my Finder. However, my mac os lion mbp still confuses the two and the only way to access the AFP shares is via direct connect to IP address. The samba machine name seems to be hardwired to hostname (I can only see that that workgroup can be changed). Is there anything I am missing or obvious that I need to set?   When linking pages, does google give higher value to href="http://www.mydomain.com" than href="/"? I am wondering because I have heard that (for SEO) it is better to provide the full http address when linking to the sites homepage. As I thought about it, I wondered why that would be. Would google really assign higher value to href="http://www.mydomain.com" instead of href="/"? They both mean the same thing. Do you guys know or have any resources on this?
