• Looped jQuery slideshow with smooth cross-fades

  I'm trying to do a simple rotating image on the home page. Under the hood I'm reading a directory and then populating urls for the images into an array. What I want to do is cross-fade the images. If it was just a matter of showing the next one, it's easy, but since I need to cross-fade, it's a bit harder. I think what I want to do is do the fades by calling animate() on the opacity value of the <img> tag, and in between swapping out the css background-image property of the enclosing <div>. But the results are not that great. I've used tools for more full featured slideshows, but I don't want the overhead of adding a plugin if I can avoid it, and a simple crossfade seems like it should be easier. • Detection of page refresh / F5 key in ASP.NET MVC 2

  How would one go about detecting a page refresh / F5 key push on the controller handling the postback? I need to distinguish between the user pressing one of two buttons (e.g., Next, Previous) and when the F5 / page refresh occurs. My scenario is a single wizard page that has different content shown between each invocation of the user pressing the "Next" or "Previous" buttons. The error that I am running into is when the user refreshes the page / presses the F5 key, the browser re-sends the request back to the controller, which is handled as a post-back and the FormCollection type is used to look for the "submitButton" key and obtain its value (e.g., "Next," "Send"). This part was modeled after the post by Dylan Beattie at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/442704/how-do-you-handle-multiple-submit-buttons-in-asp-net-mvc-framework. Maybe I'm trying to bend MVC 2 to where it isn't meant to go but I'd like to stay with the current design in that the underlying database drives the content and order of what is shown. • How do you Access an Authenticated Google App Engine Service with Ruby?

  I am trying to do this same thing here but with Ruby: Access Authenticated GAE Client with Python. Any ideas how to retrieve authenticated content from GAE with Ruby? I am using the Ruby GData Gem to access everything in Google Docs and such and it's making life very easy, but now I'd like to access things on GAE that require admin access, programmatically, and it doesn't support that.   I have a 3 column layout using table-less design. <div id="main"> <div id="left"></div> <div id="content"></div> <div id="right"></div> </div> The CSS: #left {width: 200px;float:left;display:inline;} #content {width: 600px;float:left;display:inline;padding: 0 10px;} #right {width: 160px;float:left;display:inline;} I am using a web application, and I can't change the layout. By can't change, I mean the div's with left/content/right cannot be removed. On some pages, both the left and right columns are completely empty. And I want the #content div to expand more than the 600px. is this possible, without altering the HTML? What are my options? Thanks allot!

  It seems that the checkbox used in a ListView when CheckBoxes = true isn't a proper checkbox. It doesn't draw the MouseOver or MouseDown state and it doesn't support the Indeterminate/Intermediate state. How can I replace the checkbox with a standard checkbox control or take control of the drawing of just the checkbox so I can use the CheckBoxRenderer class?

• MVC View Model Intellisense / Compile error

  I have one Library with my ORM and am working with a MVC Application. I have a problem where the pages won't compile because the Views can't see the Model's properties (which are inherited from lower level base classes). They system throws a compile error saying that 'object' does not contain a definition for 'ID' and no extension method 'ID' accepting a first argument of type 'object' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) implying that the View is not seeing the model. In the Controller I have full access to the Model and have check the Inherits from portion of the view to validate the correct type is being passed. • Frame Showing Problem

  Hey Guys I have made one project which is showing the inventory of the stock of one store. In that inventory the software should store data of the products with their images. There is one problem... Bcz of the lots of stock, the screen on which is image is loading taking a lot of time. So, i thought i should give the frame in which there will be on label which will show the "Loading Software". But now when i am setting visible = true for that frame, but bcz of that images screen class loading problem my frame is not showing correctly. I have put screen shot, now my code. • ASP.net AppendHeader not working in ASP MVC

  I'm having problems getting AppendHeader to work properly if I am also using an authorize filter. I'm using an actionfilter for my AJAX actions that applies Expires, Last-Modified, Cache-Control and Pragma (though while testing I have tried including it in the action method itself with no change in results). If I don't have an authorize filter the headers work fine. Once I add the filter the headers I tried to add get stripped. • Is there a way to get YQL to return HTML?

  I am trying to use YQL to extract a portion of HTML from a series of web pages. The pages themselves have slightly different structure (so a Yahoo Pipes "Fetch Page" with its "Cut content" feature does not work well) but the fragment I am interested in always has the same class attribute. If I have an HTML page like this: <html> <body> <div class="foo"> <p>Wolf</p> <ul> <li>Dog</li> <li>Cat</li> </ul> </div> </body> </html> and use a YQL expression like this: SELECT * FROM html WHERE url="http://example.com/containing-the-fragment-above" AND xpath="//div[@class='foo']" what I get back are the (apparently unordered?) DOM elements, where what I want is the HTML content itself. I've tried SELECT content as well, but that only selects textual content. I want HTML. Is this possible?

I doing this in controller's action: (I am aspecting pdf file here therefore it is hardcoded below. • What is SocketOptionName.ReuseAddress used for?

  I used to think that using SocketOptionName.ReuseAddress, I can reuse a port that is in TIME_WAIT state. But I tried to experiment with it and it seems it has no effect. If I check sockets using netstat, and it shows the socket is in TIME_WAIT state and I immediately run the client again, I get the exception: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted 172.16.16.16:12345 I cannot make anything out of it. Please can you elaborate what SocketOptionName.ReuseAddress is good for?

• What is the best workaround for the WCF client `using` block issue?

  I like instantiating my WCF service clients within a using block as it's pretty much the standard way to use resources that implement IDisposable: using (var client = new SomeWCFServiceClient()) { //Do something with the client } But, as noted in this MSDN article, wrapping a WCF client in a using block could mask any errors that result in the client being left in a faulted state (like a timeout or communication problem). Long story short, when Dispose() is called, the client's Close() method fires, but throws and error because it's in a faulted state. The original exception is then masked by the second exception. Not good. The suggested workaround in the MSDN article is to completely avoid using a using block, and to instead instantiate your clients and use them something like this: try { ... client.Close(); } catch (CommunicationException e) { ... client.Abort(); } catch (TimeoutException e) { ... client.Abort(); } catch (Exception e) { ... client.Abort(); throw; } Compared to the using block, I think that's ugly. And a lot of code to write each time you need a client. Luckily, I found a few other workarounds, such as this one on IServiceOriented. You start with: public delegate void UseServiceDelegate<T>(T proxy); public static class Service<T> { public static ChannelFactory<T> _channelFactory = new ChannelFactory<T>(""); public static void Use(UseServiceDelegate<T> codeBlock) { IClientChannel proxy = (IClientChannel)_channelFactory.CreateChannel(); bool success = false; try { codeBlock((T)proxy); proxy.Close(); success = true; } finally { if (!success) { proxy.Abort(); } } } } Which then allows: Service<IOrderService>.Use(orderService => { orderService.PlaceOrder(request); } That's not bad, but I don't think it's as expressive and easily understandable as the using block. The workaround I'm currently trying to use I first read about on blog.davidbarret.net. Basically you override the client's Dispose() method wherever you use it. Something like: public partial class SomeWCFServiceClient : IDisposable { void IDisposable.Dispose() { if (this.State == CommunicationState.Faulted) { this.Abort(); } else { this.Close(); } } } This appears to be able to allow the using block again without the danger of masking a faulted state exception. So, are there any other gotchas I have to look out for using these workarounds? Has anybody come up with anything better?
