  • quick folder access on Linux (akin to Launchy)

    Launchy is a great piece of software, I use it on Windows mainly for quickly accessing folders. I love its auto-indexing in the background, and hardly ever browse through folders manually these days, solves me lots of time. On Linux (Ubuntu 9.10), I usually "live" in the terminal, however. Therefore, Launchy on Linux (or Gnome Do, or its other replacements) are not what I need - as it opens the file manager, and I don't need the file manager. What I do need is something that indexes my folders and lets me cd into them quickly in the terminal. For example: mycd python_c Will cd to: ~/dev/scripts/python_code I hope my intention is understood :-) Are you familiar with such tools?

  • How do you make the Windows Components option appear in Setup Manager?

    Supposedly there is a "Windows Components" option under Advanced Settings when you run the Setup Manager (included in the \Tools\Deploy.cab from a Windows 2003 CD). I can't get this to show up. Is there a special trick? Here is a screenshot of what it is supposed to look like: http://tinypic.com/r/2rm2gau/7 When I run it, it looks exactly the same except there is no "Windows Components" option above Telephony.

  • Westell router setup page

    I can connect to the internet, ping 192.168.1.1 with no problem, haven't changed any firewall or Anti-virus settings, but bringing up 192.168.1.1 in the browser gives 'Problem loading page'. XP machine...was able to connect to the setup page few weeks ago. Any thoughts?

    I recently bought a new monitor which has a resolution of 2048 x 1152. However, this resolution is not on in the options list. I have tried installing ATI Catalyst but to no avail. I am running the monitor on the VGA cable. How can I add the resolution to the settings drop down? Additional info: VGA is through a splitter cable from DVI The outputs on my grahics card are DVI and VGA Monitor only has VGA input

    i have installed rkhunter on ubuntu 10.04 LTS when i try to test rkhunter report it doesn't send email to my external root email recipient. i can send email only editing /etc/default/rkhunter by replacing this row REPORT_EMAIL="root" with the desired recipient REPORT_EMAIL="[email protected]" These are my config file settings: /root/.forward [email protected] and /etc/aliases root: [email protected] But it doesn't work with root recipient. Any suggestion?

  • Creating an ad-hoc wireles network on a router

    My router is a Wag200g with openwag firmware. My laptop is connected to the university's internet through an ethernet cable and i have to set the browser proxy settings to connect. I want to create an ad-hoc network with a router so that i can let my laptop do the proxy routing/forwarding itself and that my android phone can connect to it and use my university's proxy (I've tried setting the proxy on my phone but it wont work).. Or am i approaching this the wrong way?

  • Antialias not working in ubuntu lucid lynx 10.04

    I have recently upgraded from karmic to lucid (plain ubuntu using gnome). Everything worked fine, but the characters now aren't anti-aliased any more, as you can appreciate from the screenshot: This is what I tried to fix the situation, unluckily without succeeding: Used the regular option pane from System-Preference-Appearance-Font (smoothing, hinting...) Edited the .fonts.conf file Disinstalling (and then re-installing) the mstcorefont package Changing the default Sans font to a font of my liking (e.g. Tahoma) from the abovementioned Appearance options My ubuntu installation is quite standard, with the typical add-ons one might wish for usability. I used the ubuntu start script to make a few tweaks. Thank you in advance for your help! :)

    I prefer ufw to iptables for configuring my software firewall. After reading about this vulnerability also on askubuntu, I decided to block the fixed IP of the control server: 212.7.208.65. I don't think I'm vulnerable to this particular worm (and understand the IP could easily change), but wanted to answer this particular comment about how you would configure a firewall to block it. I planned on using: # sudo ufw deny to 212.7.208.65 # sudo ufw deny from 212.7.208.65 However as a test that the rules were working, I tried pinging after I setup the rules and saw that my default ufw settings let ICMP through even from an IP address set to REJECT or DENY. # ping 212.7.208.65 PING 212.7.208.65 (212.7.208.65) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 212.7.208.65: icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=79.6 ms ^C --- 212.7.208.65 ping statistics --- 1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 79.630/79.630/79.630/0.000 ms Now, I'm worried that my ICMP settings are too generous (conceivably this or a future worm could setup an ICMP tunnel to bypass my firewall rules).   • Apple shortcuts in Ubuntu

    Hi, I switch between a Mac and Ubuntu often. On my Ubuntu box, I use an Apple Aluminum keyboard. I'm interested in Apple's "command" key: ? (I'm not concerned about the hardware control keys) cmd-T opens a browser tab cmd-C, cmd-V for copy/paste, especially in a terminal window control-c maintains the same meaning in terminal (abort) Just switching the control & command keys in Ubuntu would almost get me there, except for the special behaviour of the keys a terminal (Terminal is my most frequently used app). Has it been done? edit: using Gnome, not KDE

  • Printer keeps going offline in Windows 7 XP Mode

    Every time I reboot the computer, the printer in Windows 7 XP mode goes offline. I have to go back into the full XP mode and attach the printer again to make it work. I have the settings set to automatically attach the printer, but it doesn't appear to be working. Any ideas what might make it automatically re-attach? Does anyone see this working?

  • HP Envy screen brightness .. stuck

    once in a while, the screen brightness stops responding to any reason, and stays on full brightness.. for those of you that have HP Envy, you know what this means... battery suicide. the FN+* controls don't work. i also tried going in to power settings and adjusting all modes brightness to low wend of spectrum, after saving, it has no effect.. i suppose i could try rebooting as i always just put my laptop to sleep :/ anyone came across this ?

    I've encountered a very strange problem when trying to reply to e-mail via my Yahoo Web Mail from a family member's computer. She received an e-mail from a client who is using Microsoft Outlook. When I receive the message it looks perfectly fine in my browser and I can read it. It doesn't happen with all e-mails except this particular one. At a glance it almost looks like raw CSS code that's being displayed, but I really can't understand why. So far I have tried the following: Try a different browser, both IE11 and Google Chrome Check the browser encoding settings Check Yahoo Web Mail's encoding/font settings My only other guess is that the client used some weird font or formatting on the e-mail that is throwing the message body out of sync. Unfortunately for my family member, she is a contractor working with a medium-sized company that refuses to provide her with a domain e-mail address, so she is forced to conduct business this way. Simply asking the sender to use a more widely supported font wouldn't be an acceptable solution here. Any thoughts?

  • Increase text size in Ubuntu due to having large resolution/monitors

    I have 24" dual monitors with 1920x1080 resolution on both of them. Consequently the text appears so small. I use the following text-intensive applications frequently: Web browser (Google Chrome) IDE (Komodo) Terminal (Gnome Terminal) Email (Thunderbird) I can configure text size on IDE, Terminal and Email. But for Chrome, it is not a good idea to set proportional font size because often one wants to see the entire (not just proportional fonts) site to be zoomed. So I am asking: Is it possible to increase DPI in Ubuntu (much like on Windows) so as to increase the text size across all apps? OR Is it possible to set permanent 'zoom' in Google Chrome, using a third-party extension maybe?

    I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 and I am using it to host a domain that I have. I am trying to set up FTP for the server, but I am running into some problems. I have successfully installed vsFTPd and I have opened up ports 20, 21 on my firewall. In my vsFTPd configuration, I have enabled SSL. Every time I try to connect to my server via FTP, I receive a "Connection Refused" error. I have had a little more success with SSL disabled, however the connection process will time out after the LIST command (but it does accept my authentication). Unfortunately when I set in "Users and Groups" module settings the "External password-checking program" to the same value that works for samba check password script: /usr/bin/pwqcheck -1 I get following error when I try to create a user (named test-user): Failed to save user : pwqcheck: Error parsing parameter "test-user": Invalid parameter So, How do I configure Webmin together with pwqcheck?

  • How to config cscope in emacs?

I have installed emacs and cscope successfully: sudo apt-get install emacs sudo apt-get install cscope then run command in the directory of the source code folder in my terminal, and the index files have been produced. cscope-indexer and add the following stuf in .emacs in home/username folder (require 'xcscope)) ) However, there isn't a short-cut ,'CSCOPE', in the emacs ui and when I use ctrl_c + s to use cscope, emacs said it's undefined. What should i do now to make cscope run.
